Had the Christmas Fayre dinner. 3 of us had Turkey and 1had beef. Food was nicely cooked and presented, staff were friendly and courteous, checking back to see if everything was ok. Dessert was a little small and should have had option for ice cream instead of cream but on the whole it was a very pleasant evening and the food was good.

Pretty much of a muchness. I have done a lot of travelling in my life and I would say it is adequate, the food is in my opinion exceptional although the local services and hotel don't cater for the traveller who has forgotten for an example a shaving razor early in the morning, and no time to obtain one while attending a family funeral. Hopefully it will improve over a period as they improve with experience.

We booked to stay here overnight on our way home from Holiday and the pub was really nice and decorated to a good standard. The staff was lovely and friendly The room was smaller than I thought but it was really cosy and once you put the heater on it soon warms up The rooms are separate from the pub , They are like a row of chalet style rooms... There is a desk TV towels kettle with a god choice of hot drinks The bed was very comfy and pillows was lovely too. Being a larger lady I found the shower a tight squeeze and not much flow with the shower but it wouldn't put me off staying again The food was amazing All the reviews said it was excellent and it was I had STARTERS..Garlic Mushrooms with Garlic Bread MAINS..Hunters Chicken with Chunky Chips and Salad (A choice of chips or fries) DESSERT..Sticky Toffee Pudding With Custard My Husband Had.. My wife booked the Fir Tree as a base for a birthday treat for me. The room was wonderfully comfortable and well presented. We dined in the Fir Tree Restaurant and enjoyed an exceptional dinner. The portions are generous and cooked beautifully, the home made pie was delicious. The food is cooked and presented with love and care adding to the whole dining experience. The cheesecake is to die for and was most definitely one of the best I have tried in a long time. During our stay over a long weekend we travelled around the coast and more locally returning each evening to enjoy the delicious menu on offer. With very friendly and welcoming staff the Fir Tree is a brilliant place to base yourself for exploring or to call in for a memorable evening meal.

We came here for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. What a lovely place. There are ample parking spaces and a spacious outdoor section. Inside is a beautiful classic country pub decor, lovely and clean with plenty of seats. We were shocked at how quiet it was for a Saturday, only two tables were occupied. The barmaid was super friendly and sat us straight away and looked after us well throughout our visit. The menu is traditional pub fare, very reasonably priced and absolutely delicious. Our food came out quite quickly and we thoroughly enjoyed what we ordered. Would loved to have had dessert too but our main courses left us full. Will have one next time as we will most definitely be back. Toilets nice and clean. Good choice of drinks. If we had to think of anything less than positive, it was slightly lacking in atmosphere. If there was music on, it was too low to hear and it went very quiet when the other two tables left. Overall though, we kinda liked this, but not everyone would.

We were shown in a space behind the pool table, even though there was other nicer tables available (which were not reserved). They mixed up the order and my son got some kind of tasteless pulled beef instead of the chicken. The sauce and chips were good. My Burger was hard and tasteless, cheese was and had not melted Fries were okay. Might be that as europeans we are used to food with moore taste. Unfortenately quality & taste and price doesn't mactch.

Went for Sunday carvery, they could benefit from a larger service area but with the size of the building it would be impossible, they get very busy so I would highly recommend booking well in advance. The food was cooked to a high quality and was really nice, the large soft drinks were a bit over priced at £3.30 for an almost pint of diet coke but the price of the meal was great. Only other suggestions I could give is for baby portions of deserts as we had a 2 year old with us and they had to do a special order for the size for her. Yes I would recommend going and I will consider going back again.

We came across the Fir Tree by chance on our way home back to Scotland. We were looking for somewhere to have lunch. We had the leek and potato soup followed by panninis I had the local sausage filling and my wife had the roast beef. Both were excellent, both served with chips and salad and the portion size meant we didn't need dinner. The service was a bit slow but we weren't in any hurry so didn't matter. If we are ever in the area again I would be more than happy to return. I can't speak for the rooms as we didn't stay.

The food was really good and I enjoyed my lunch as was the service from the staff. Downside of staying here is: I don't eat breakfast and although I explained this when booking they did not offer a room only price so i had to pay for something i didn'twant, As this is the only accommodation in that area or close to where I needed to be, this was my only option. The rooms are clean but unfortunately quite noisy and you can hear everything from the adjacent rooms, especially shower extractors and flushing of toilets and in some cases conversation, so not too good for light sleepers like myself.

Arrived for the 12 o clock sitting for Christmas lunch - lady queried there being 6 of us despite having paid the final balance and having chosen our food options... nevertheless this was no issue and we were sat down and given our complimentary glasses of champagne - lovely. The first two starters arrived - a soup and a tart. Lovely food. They were eaten (finished) when two more starters arrived 10 minutes later - chicken strips. Again, they were both finished and we had to ask where the remaining starters were. They were chased up and the next starters arrived. Not great having to all eat separately but it was Christmas Day and the staff were friendly and apologetic so, again, this was not an issue. We then had champagne sorbet and went for the carvery lunch.Food was delicious and all piping hot. Plenty of choice of both meats and veg.Again, once finished we were left sitting. On any other day I’m sure it wouldn’t have been an issue but the next sitting of people were arriving they were literally crowding around our table. We were sat by the bar rather than in the restaurant. We went to request our desserts. Again, could not complain about the desserts - lovely. Although, it was somewhat off putting with people literally stood around watching us and bumping into us. We left without any staff member saying goodbye/merry Christmas or thank you. Overall, disappointing service. It’s a shame because all of the staff that did speak to us were great. But they really should’ve had more people working to make it special.

We were a party of six and had a lovely meal on Friday 13th sat at a pleasant table in the snug.We had pre ordered our meals and apart from one starter that was missing then arrived after everyone else had finished(and refused but not charged) the rest arrived quickly and as expected. The carvery was particularly good as was the apple pie.Another nice touch was having the drinks brought to the table so the men in the party did not have to keep leaving the table to go to the bar.. The table setting had crackers and a fun quiz which was a nice touch.Have visited a few times and always enjoyed our meal and considering it was a really busy night we were looked after well.

We found we had officially missed end of service by 15 mins, but the Chef kindly agreed to cook for us. The meals came promptly and were way beyond our expectations. The fairly small and understated menu belies great quality food that comes in generous quantity at regular pub prices. Staff are friendly, efficient and professional and the general ambiance of the restaurant is is one of quietly sophisticated. I have no hesitation in recommending this restaurant. Bar menu is amazing value, a gut-busting selection of meat and fish dishes.I chose the "Yorkshire Pudding Wrap" and was offered a choice of roast meat to go in it. I asked if it was really a wrap not just a cup with meat in - NO definitely a WRAP!It was a wrap and huge, came on a large 12" plate which it covered with Yorkshire Pudding wrapping beef, carrots and green beans. Roast potatoes and a jug of gravy came as sides. I managed the first half with enjoyment but 'unwrapped' the second half to give me a chance of finishing the beef and veg which were really tasty.I was offered a look at the desert menu but no room!£9.95 for the Wrap and £3.10 for a pint of local beer was great value for money

Very courteous staff who were very welcoming and prompt with their service. I’m vegetarian and was impressed with a good choice of dishes, I settled on a mushroom wellington which I have to say was one of the most tasty meals I’ve ever had in a pub!!! The Stilton sauce was to die for and my friend was quite overwhelmed by the size of her dish( fish goujons which were literally a whole fish cut into strips. All this and two drinks came to only £23!!The only thing that could’ve improved the visit was the lack of beds in front of the fire to sleep it all off!!!! Will def recommend and visit again very soon.

We visited here with my husbands mother. I ordered burger and chips, hubby had belly pork and mash and MIL had roast of the day baguette with chips. My food was very nice and the chips were lovely - proper home made chips. So why the mark down? My husbands belly pork and mash had a sliver of gravy across the plate. He said he would have preferred a jug of gravy. Also his mustard mash was very overpowering. Finally the waitress, while polite, came across as a bit cold and didn't have much personality. A smile would have been nice. We'd eat here again and hope for a different waitress.

After a five and a half hour drive from Norwich to stay for 2 nights (travelling to European Champions Cup Rugby supporting the mighty Saracens at Newcastle) we finally arrived to a very warm welcome and a very nice clean room with shower.Managed to get a table for evening meal (obviously really popular) and studied the pretty extensive menu. Not normally a starter person I was taken by two starters that really took my fancy-Deep fried brie or mushrooms in a garlic sauce. We decided to share-Both were excellent and a very generous portion.Poss the nicest starters I have had.Main course was a really hard choice but I opted for steak pie with homemade fries and seasonal veg.Wow,what a pie.Large bits of steak, delicious gravy and nice pastry. Was struggling to finish all,and had sadly to surrender leaving 4 large chips. My wife had baroness of chicken in creamy garlic mushroom sauce which was very tasty and tender and she also had to surrender some fries.Wonderful meal, but way too full for dessert.Back to our nice clean room with a nice mattress, nice TV and a good enough size for two of us.Breakfast is great-Full english with good choice of cereals yoghurts etc and served with a smile and a cheery disposition in a very pleasant dining area.Price of room including breakfast is great value.Credit goes to the management and the excellent staff who work there who remain cheery and unruffled.I have no hesitation in recommending The Fir Tree Country Hotel for short stay visitors.Durham,a lovely town and fantastic cathedral is quite near, and the train from Durham to Newcastle is a 12 minute journey so worth leaving the car there and training in.Highly recommended.

Booked a table for Mothering Sunday. Absolutely amazing service and amazing food. Would fully recommend for any occasion, even if you just fancy a drink. The place has a lovely, warm atmosphere and a great selection of gins. What else could you need?! Stick toffee pudding was so good, but I was so full I just had to take it home with me. 10’s across the board! Definitely will be visiting again!LUSH LUSH LUSH!

The Food is more than Sumptuous and the Sweets a far too Nice;Yet something seems to be lacking this week and it wasn't the Reasonable Price.Sadly, the Staff seemed less than enthused, although we did book after Three; There seemed a Hidden Pressure that disturbed: Or was that Only Me!The customers were smiling at the Bar, however sullen staff were short;Perhaps Management need to change their Tune to attract a more Clement Report.Experience of the Clientele is Paramount You See;Today was Spoilt unfortunately, by some underlying, unsettling degree!

Have been here for food a few times now and have never been let down, the staff are so accommodating and helpful, the quality of the food is fantastic and the choice is great. We came today for the carvery and it was probably the best I've ever tasted, choice of 5 meats, 8 veg as well as mash and roast potatoes that's not counting the huge, light at a feather yorkshires, an absolute delight.

Two for lunch, very friendly staff greeted us, shown to a table in the restaurant. We did intend to have a light lunch, but when shown the menu, chose scampi and cod. Both meals very nice, served with home made chips, drinks brought to the table, as expected.Everything delicious, but perhaps a little too much food, surprisingly. The home made chips were large, hot and delicious, but there was so much, I couldn’t possibly eat them all, my friend the same.Next time, we’ll perhaps we’ll try the sandwiches as intended. Restaurant was busy at lunch time, and the meals going past us looked nice.We paid at the bar, after the meal, as we weren’t sure what the procedure was. We’d visit again. We paid approximately £10 each and the drinks we chose were inexpensive, couldn’t fault the meal, but perhaps for lunch next time we’d spend and eat less. For an evening meal, it was ideal, or perhaps we just felt guilty as we normally go out for sandwiches

We booked a table for 7pm and arrived a few minutes early. The table wasn’t quite ready and we were asked if we minded having a drink in the bar, which was no problem at all.We were invited to sit at our table about ten minutes later. We were handed menus at we were shown our table. The menu was extensive and in my opinion, there was something for everyone. The starters arrived promptly and were delicious. The main courses were also served promptly, the portion sizes were huge and the quality of the food was amazing. There were three couples and we all commented that the food was delicious. The desserts were just as nice. The price for the food was just over £100 for six of us, which consisted of four starters, six main courses and three desserts. This was excellent value for money. We also asked if we could see one of the hotel bedrooms as we are considering an overnight the next time we visit as the hotel is around 30 minutes from where we live. This was no problem at all and the rooms were clean and well presented. The staff were friendly and attentive and we all agreed that we will definitely be returning very soon.

My sisters and I, along with my niece, took our Mam for lunch to celebrate her birthday. From the moment we stepped through the door we received impeccable service from a young woman, whose name I don't know, but whose birthday it was also. She was friendly and attentive, and nothing was too much trouble for her.The food was delicious and plentiful. I would advise having either a starter, or a dessert, as we all had three courses, and we were stuffed to the gills.

Fantastic meals, very pleasant and accommodating staff, great ambience, however put off slightly by screaming and shouting kids. Therefore allocating placing for adults only would be a great benefit . Talking to Friends and family who use the Fir Tree are of the same opinion. Will still frequent this establishment but try to request a table away from children or buy ear defenders.

Visited here for lunch today with a friend who has just moved in to property across the road - I’m so envious what a gorgeous place with a lovely menu! Staff were all really friendly and accommodating, meal was cooked perfectly.Great to see a section for those watching calories - a range of meals with low sin value for those following a certain healthy eating plan ( I have mentioned this to fellow members so be prepared for a deluge!) Will definately be returning - looking at the valentines meal maybe to treat the hubby .

Twelve family members arrived for the carvery, rapid service although there was a ten minute wait at the table as they were refreshing the food which was In my opinion a good thing. Food was top notch one of the best carvery’s ive eaten. The meet was extremely tender and tasty vegetables were cooked perfectly Yorkshire puddings were very good! Every member of the family was in agreement on how nice it was. It was my birthday and the staff were so helpful they were busy but found time to bring out a cake ( brought by us) with lit candles, provided us with plates and serving cutlery and also tin foil to wrap up the remaining cake to take away. Couldn’t thank them enough and would highly recommend a visit, we will certainly be returning even though it’s a thirty minute drive!

We stayed for one night and the newly refurbished rooms, motel style, were very nice. We ate in the pub and the staff were very friendly and there was a good selection of food available. I have never had mashed potato with mussels before but the waitress says it was very popular. Would highly recommned if you are in the area.

Booked Sunday lunch for a special occasion (14 people), table was for 3pm and at no point during booking, were we told that they would need the table back by 4pm. We were only advised of this upon arrival when it would have been too late to go elsewhere. When we arrived, a young girl at the door said ‘I’m not sure if anyone has told you, but we need the table back at 4pm, so if you want desserts you’ll have to eat them out here (the bar)’. Again, we’d booked for a special occasion, so we were less than happy at being told we’d have to move to finish our meal.We also asked to open a tab as my parents are going away for Christmas and wanted to pay the entire bill, but we were told that they were too busy to open a tab and it was ‘pay as you go’ only. I incredulously asked why it was not possible to leave the bill open for such a large group, and the same young girl rudely advised me that they’ve had groups of 40 who weren’t allowed to open a tab (how a group of 40 could be in and out in an hour I’ll never know). We had been told that a vegetarian carvery would be available - this turned out to just be the vegetables available on the hot counter, there was no meat alternative. The food was decent, but as a couple of the group ordered from the bar menu and we wanted to eat together, it was impossible to be finished within the allotted time - especially coupled with trying to sort out a fussy one-year-old - I left part of my meal as I didn’t particularly want to finish it in the bar. As warned, we did have to move back through to the bar for those who wanted desserts, in fact, staff were clearing the table before all members of the group had finished eating - completely unacceptable.I appreciate that they’d have less bookings if they allowed 90 minutes instead of 60, but surely if you’ve got a larger group, with children, an allowance could be made to ensure a good experience - especially when you have a bar menu available as well as carvery. Whilst the food was good, unfortunately none of our group will be recommending the restaurant to anyone, as it seems the owners prefer to think of how much they can take in a day, over customer experience. Using the excuse ‘sorry, we’re busy’ just doesn’t cut it for me when they are in full control of how many bookings they’re squeezing in.

I have just got home from a lovely Christmas meal at the Fir Tree. It was lovely food, very friendly and accommodating staff. One of our group took ill at the last minuet and unfortunately could not make the night, so the chef put her meal on a plate so she could enjoy it tomorrow. He put enough food up to keep her for a week, true Christmas spirit.

Tried the restaurant because of its reviews. They were well deserved. We were welcome to a lovely blazing stove on a very cold night. Staff were very welcoming and offered us a choice of table. The menu has plenty of choices that would suit most tastes. Wife chose a vegetarian dish and I opted for corned pie. Both dishes were extremely tasty and ample portions. Going back next week.

The food here was amazing. Seen this place but never been and glad I did! The beef was so soft and my son was still eating well after we finished. He has never eaten so much when we have been out. I don't usually post reviews but this was well worth the look up and will definitely come again!
