The location is great with a spectacular view of the bay. The staff are polite and efficient but that was it. The cafe is dark and uninviting, seriously in need of a make-over. The cappucino was just foamy milk, it didn't taste of coffee. One cake was really sugary and the other, Victoria sponge, was dry and had very sweet butter icing. For the price I thought it was pooe. I wouldn't go again.

Basic cafe food, but with a twist. Sarnies served beautifully with a salad of chopped toms, peppers, cucumber etc., no damp lettuce leaf here. All freshly prepared, cheesie chips were beautiful, very large portions (fortunately we have 2 Old English Sheepdogs so they finished the food for us)!!! Cakes extremely pleasant as well. Shame the service was so slow at the counter, but they appeared to be short staffed. Will be back on our next visit to Scarborough

Set at the foot of the impressive Italian Garden this little cafe sits on the beach side with panoramic views of the South Bay. (Earns 2 stars) My cheese toastie , well as you would have found it was left untouched other than to look inside. It was the saddest cheese toastie I have encountered , cheap medium sliced bread with burnt crusts and not sure what the little bit of cheese was in the middle ? Sorry but if I’m paying £6 for a sandwich it should be edible. Shame because the coffee and the location were spot on !!

I am sorry to say but this cafe is no longer worth the visit The food is not up to the standards of previous visits and the only exception is the scones with a mug of tea The prices are extortionate and the service very slow especially cleaning the tables One last thing make sure to check how much you are charged, I was charged 17.50 then when I queried the price I was given £1 back i again queried the prices before I left and was given a further £2.20

The Clock Cafe has THE BEST view imaginable. Delightful afternoon teas and quaint china cups, but there is nothing quaint about the portions - they serve proper Yorkshire farmhouse portions! They give fantastic value for money - we shared one as we hadn't gone there purposefully for afternoon tea but couldn't resist. We still brought a scone home as couldn't finish it. The homemade cakes and treats are gorgeous. I didn't have a lot of cash as it wasn't a planned visit, but you can arrange to pay by bank transfer, they don't have a card machine as it is such a patchy signal area, and even though it did look as though my bank payment had gone through, it has disappeared and I looked like I did a runner - the very understanding team requested contact numbers when paying by bank transfer and they messaged me to explain that the signal maybe affected my transaction. Oh well....we will just have to pop down to settle up....and sample the breakfasts next time, perfect excuse :)

MORE AT TripAdvisor

My oh my where do I even begin with this place. An ideal location and great view but that’s about as far as the positives go. Firstly there’s the payment system. Not taking card in 2023 is bad enough but suggesting a bank transfer?? Do you want a holding deposit and reference as well? If that’s not bad enough there’s also the array of papers plastered everywhere telling you why they don’t take card and whinging about bank fees. Just what you want when you nip out for a cuppa and a bacon roll - a lecture on injustices in the international monetary system. When we finally got around to been served I felt like an eternity had passed thanks to the queueing system. The Irony of a clock tower cafe where nothing is on time. The food was below par and not worth the price tags. Since when does straight out of a packet constitute as fresh? Perhaps this could be forgiven if it wasn’t for the poor service. My friend politely asked for a few extra napkins to which she received a tirade about how they are a small business with limited resources. My friend tried to diffuse the situation but she went on a rant about record profits at HSBC and how Visa are the enemy of the people. Very strange. Perhaps us out of towners should stick to more up market establishments in future. The owner clearly has an attitude problem looking at the responses on this page. Perhaps it’s time the clock tower cafe clocked out.

Great location, decent pot of tea, nice lunch of fairly standard but very fresh sandwiches. Sadly, experience was spoilt a little by just one member of staff behind the counter who was clearly struggling to hear a couple of customers orders but then decided, within earshot of the customers, to insult and blame them for this. Some customer service training may be required for this person. Other customers overheard also complaining about this person’s attitude. If you’re having a bad day don’t take it out on customers. All of the other staff were really lovely.

Breakfast and views were excellent. Was very upset to see a member of staff be rude to an elderly gentleman who was hard of hearing. She was extremely disrespectful and was rolling her eyes and snapping at him as he couldn’t hear what she was saying. Such a shame as we had visited in the morning for breakfast and again in the afternoon for coffee and would have returned numerous times this week. I can appreciate it must be challenging dealing with holiday makers day in and day out but a little kindness and patience to an elderly man would have gone a long way and it didn’t look good in front of the que of customers waiting to be served. It is customers such as holiday makers paying her wages at the end of the day. And I am no keyboard warrior - I did point it out to her whilst I was there but she gave me a smug ‘I don’t care’ smile’. #bekind

Wish we hadn’t.Staff were rude on the way in, no welcome or anything and we were only approached to remind us to wear our masks at all times, even when sitting at the table or they could be fined, it actually felt like a lecture and was very intimidating (we are well aware of covid and masks as we work patient facing healthcare roles so there was no need for her to be so rude about it). Only one member of staff was polite and that was the younger one who took our order at the till. Staff weren’t even wearing masks as they were tidying in the outside furniture and bringing it in, despite walking through the inside areas close to customers. Literally felt like the staff could not be bothered with their customers, no smiles, pushing past people. The coffee was simply instant coffee, weak and not worth the £2 + price tag when you can buy a jar for that.

I’m a regular at the clock cafe, the ladies and Robin have measures in place to keep everyone as safe as possible in these trying times we all face. Fill in your track and trace forms, put up with the queue if there is one, wear your mask...all things we have to do now wherever we go. To all the troll keyboard warriors...why not speak to the staff if you have an issue so they can sort things out for you...I’ll never understand the need to put up with something if you’re not happy??? There’s always a member of staff around to speak to and I know they will do their best to ensure your issue is sorted...they can’t do anything when you become brave on here on your keyboard! Rant over to all the negative feedback!Amazing views here, even on a cold and windy day. Come and enjoy home made scones to die for, baked fresh throughout the day. Home made chicken curry, chilli, pasta bake and mushroom stroganoff all very tasty. All day breakfast available too. Fish and chips are a huge portion here. You’ll be spoilt for choice! The cake display will have you unable to make a choice...maybe that’s why there’s a queue! For a friendly, VERY safe, organised and sanitised cafe you won’t go wrong paying the clock cafe a visit. I have again visited the clock cafe the view is amazing and the weather was too ! Very busy for September ! The staff I feel are coping so very well during this difficult time . I realise that as well as customers having to socially distance the staff also have to making it very difficult for them . There also aren’t as many staff as they simply aren’t allowed . The ladies are coping admirably under the circumstances. There’s track and trace in place and also the tables are being sanitized when customers leave . The toilets are clean and there’s hand gel and wipes for everyone to use . The queues are inevitable but by now we all should be used to queuing we have to do it wherever we go now it’s part of life . Someone mentioned serving alcohol? I think that’s a step too far there would never be a chance of getting a table ....and I for one would not relish having my lunch surrounded by people boozing ! It’s a lovely peaceful place . I also wouldn’t go there on a night .... no parking no lights in the gardens ....no lift ! Leave the clock as it is ladies I know you can’t do a lot to modernise as you are a listed building but it’s always very clean well kept and very well run . I’m loving the homemade coleslaw too .....stay safe see you soon x

It is only by virtue of the fact that the Clock Cafe has an absolute monopoly on South Cliff because there are literally no other cafes open at all this summer that it continues to be so busy,in spite of expecting customers to wait in line for half an hour or more on busy days to get to the counter to even give their order. There then follows another long wait for any food items that have been ordered. At the prices charged it should be possible to provide table service.Oh, and after the long wait, our coffees were almost cold but we decided to leave them rather than queue again to ask for replacements.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

I have endured this place for fifty+ years and I cannot believe the Clock Cafe receives so many positive reviews. The current operators do not deserve to run a cafe in one of the most prestigious cafe locations in the UK. Without doubt, the views across Scarborough’s South Bay are stunning (except when the weather comes from the northeast of course), yet customers here have to endure service that more resembles a city ‘greasy spoon’ than - what should be - a delightful Victorian tea room or buzzing seafood restaurant.Echoing a number of the reports on Trip Adviser, I detest having to queue in any cafe or eatery when table service could be provided; the more so here when the appeal of the Clock Cafe is the view from the terrace. Why should I stand for 20 minutes plus and then have a plastic tray thrust in front of me, upon which I’m then required to cart drinks, cakes etc out to the table? I should be spending the time required to queue with my companions, enjoying the location, not jostling in front of a counter. The management team are simply blind to he fact that waiter service would, not only, enhance the customer experience, but also increase their turnover. I won’t even start to opine on the benefits of waited tables in the Covid situation over having to queue with random strangers from far and wide!Sadly there’s unlikely to be any change to the Clock Cafe. The Borough Council and operators have this stitched up. There’s no opportunity for new ideas to refresh an outdated business model. And herein is the disgrace; when one looks at other seaside towns around the UK one finds exciting and innovative operators providing great menus, great service and even the means to pay by debit/credit card! Why is the Clock Cafe allowed to be so scruffy? Why does it not open in the evenings; switching from lunches and teas during the day to bistro/wine bar in the evening? If this venue was anywhere else in the world it would be staffed by competent and efficient table waiters, serve locally sourced, high quality, fresh seafood, accompanied by a decent range of wines and beers. But no. The Clock Cafe is stuck in a bygone era, decaying slowly, oblivious to the tastes of clients (regardless of age), content to operate like a canteen in a 1970s factory, exploiting the fact that it’s ‘Hobson choice’ for those that venture along Scarborough’s South Bay beach beyond the Spa complex. It is little surprise however. The same comments can be made about the facilities in Scarborough in general; locked in a past that no longer exists, lacking in imagination and 21st century quality, crumbling through neglect and lack of investment..... oh, and for heaven’s sake, use some of the tremendous profits you no doubt make to buy a decent espresso machine!

we waited over 30 mins just to get 2 takeaway coffees which were very poor I mite add,. My husband was then told it was cash only when he finally got to the desk, it was a good job he had a small amount of cash on him or he would have waited for nothing, we saw no notices to say it was cash only and none of the staff mentioned it when we were having to wait outside.

I appreciate it's difficult at the moment with all the restrictions (and the card machine not working), but bloody hell - hurry up! The queuing is just PAINFULLY slow when all customers are getting is cups of tea and scones. The views are lovely but that's all I'm afraid.

Visited here three times on my recent trip and had gluten free options available each time. Staff are very knowledgeable regarding food allergies and intolerances. Gluten free options in jacket potatoes with a choice of filling, and gluten free sandwiches with a choice of filling. Very friendly staff and great location to visit on a sunny day.

We visited mid Sunday afternoon on a sunny day. Place was quite busy mainly outside. The staff were keeping the place clean one of the young girls had to break up a large party who had pushed tables together. She handled it very well. The recording and sanitising rules were not however being followed by the customers and nobody was enforcing it. We had fish and chips which was excellently cooked.

Stopped off for two mugs of serious Yorkshire tea and a scone and a flapjack. The flapjack was a bit odd, being apparently made with cornflakes as well as oats, but it was homemade so that was good. Very full outside - ended up as some of the few sitting inside. People queuing inside had masks on and there was a staff member going round spraying the outside tables and chairs after use, which was a challenge when people were taking them while other members of their group queued for food. Loos functioning, sanitizer on offer. A good healthy climb down from the Esplanade and up again afterwards.

This has long been a favourite destination of ours; it has the best view across the South Bay and is nicely away from all the hub-but of life on the prom. Friendly family-run cafe, Jackie and her team work hard on sunny days and you often have to wait for a table as people tend to take so long. The CoVid measures mean the menu is drastically reduced and there are some queueing routines that are a bit strictly imposed, but its still great sandwiches, cakes and real Yorkshire Tea. (Another Scarbororugh institution that closes far too early - 4:00 now. So get there early!). (By the way, many people call it the Clock Tower and the Clock House, but its real name is the Clock Cafe)

Super social distancing measures in place, staff really friendly and hard working - a credit to the cafe. The views of the bay are fantastic and the food is also lovely. Definitely worth a visit. Cash only.

A visit to Scarborough wouldn't be complete without calling at the Clock Cafe. If you get there first thing then the scones are still warm from the oven - excellent! Anytime of the day is good though, drinks and cakes we usually have but they do more. They're all sorted for spacing and hygiene -give them a visit.

Fantastic view over bay. We visited twice in one day. As we walked down to Beach we stopped for coffee and scones. Scones were hot and tasty and good portion. Dogs welcome and they have a bowl of water available. On the way back up from the beach we stopped again for Scampi and chips. They are working hard to make the cafe a safe place to eat. Tables and chairs are disinfected between customers. There are social distancing marks on floor. There is hand sanitizer available. Tables are spaced safety apart. Would go again.

I’m a big fan of the Clock, great breakfasts and home bake cakes. The staff are helpful and smiley. The view is gorgeous and well worth walking to the south end of South Bay. Thank you so much.

This beautiful venue takes full advantage of its locals “after season” and it has very dry scones & exceedingly bad service (if you would like something light!) I’d give is a miss & just enjoy sea views on a beach or from Farah’s nearby instead that takes card. This place doesn’t & out of season treats customers badly; especially foreigners.

On a beautiful Saturday afternoon, came across this cafe after walking a little further than we normally do. There were seating outside to enjoy the view over South Bay and weather. The prices and choice was good. The staff were pleasant.

Reading through the reviews, it's interesting to see how people's expectations differ. We agree with the "excellent" reviews about the wonderful views, the romantic premises, the high-quality food at reasonable prices, and the friendly service. However, we also agree with the "terrible" reviews regarding the dishwater that is supposed to pass for tea and coffee. Ironically, when I complained about the tea and coffee being insipid, the waitress had to ask me which drink was which. Enough said?

We stopped by for coffee and sat out overlooking the sea - a really delightful venue! It serves very basic fare at realistic prices - because of the signal (or lack of) they are not able to take card payments. Well worth popping in, especially if you’ve been walking through the gardens.

Been here on numerous occasions over the years and never been disappointed. Good selection of homemade snacks and meals on the menu, at very reasonable prices. Scones and coffee go down a treat, and the views are amazing. Worth the walk for the scones alone!!

Walking back along beach after a guided walk and needed to get food for my 2 young kids quickly. I had read mixed reviews about this cafe but tried it anyway. The place was very busy for a late Sunday afternoon. Lovely to sit outside looking over the bay. Some of the staff were very helpful and jolly. I was served by a younger staff member and ordered sandwiches for all 4 of us stating one was for a toddler so just needed to be a simple cheese sandwich nothing fancy, and ordered a coffee too. The white bread sandwiches were made with cheap white bread (which the kids loved!) which really, was not that nice, one was brown bread and much nicer. I took half the toddlers sandwich back in to ask if it could be wrapped to take away as she could not eat it all.Was then told they do half portions for kids - so one thing to note for anyone visiting. Wish I had been told earlier! Coffee was very milky and rather sweet tasting too. Place could do with a bit of TLC but then again it is on the seafront being exposed to the elements. It was nice to sit outside on clean furniture. Not sure I would return in a hurry. Plenty of people there though and maybe sandwiches are just not their best item.

Scarborough visitation from our home in W Yorkshire is not complete without lunch at the Clock Cafe. Their food portions are always generous. Went yesterday 2.9.19 & nothing has changed. An Australian couple at an adjacent table on a UK & Ireland tour seemed to share opinions of the venues excellence, however.sadly the inclement weather could not permit their visit to be enhanced by the cafes panoramic seascape vistas

Delicious carrot and coriander soup (tasted homemade), tasty cheese toastie, excellent chips, freshly made coleslaw, coffee and walnut cake to die for and hot milk coffee - all at very reasonable prices.

What a find! This has been the loveliest meal we have had this year. The food is beautiful, my husband had haddock and loved it. I had rib of beef and it was just delightful some of the best food I have had. The landlord was super lovely and nothing was too much trouble. The staff were lovely and attentive but not over bearing. The menu gives lots of choice and there is a brilliant gin menu. They are dog friendly too so we all had a wonderful time- thank you. We have booked up for Sunday lunch when we are next on holiday over here. I couldn’t recommend this place enough
