My husband and I are always impressed with the quality of the food here. We are regular visitors and find the Cliff so friendly and relaxing. Today I had tasty Lasagne from the Light Bite menu. I love the crisp, crunchy salad and garlic bread served with it and there is a choice of sweet afterwards. My husband opted for a sweet chilli wagu burger served with chips from the specials board. He said the burger was juicy and the chilli chicken strips accompaniment were delicious. There is always a great choice of food here and the service is second to none.

There was 6 of us n we waited an hour n 10 mins for our food even though the place was almost empty. 2 all day brunches arrived stone cold & one had a hair in the beans. My autistic son got his meal half an hour before us so wanted to leave when he'd finished. Staff did apologise n replaced one meal but it wasn't a good experience so we wouldn't go back

So pleased I live a 5 minute walk away from this pub. Visited for lunch today with the hubby, I normally have a dish from the specials board but today I just chose from the menu which has lots of great dishes on. I had the salt & chilli chicken with fries, portion was huge! Fantastic as always. Hubby got the chicken Kiev Parmo with chips, again it was a huge portion. Staff are fab and friendly as always. Great atmosphere 👍

Sunday dinner was absolutely gorgeous. Ultimate comfort food - can't believe it was our first time, as we live very close. Will definitely be back.

We went to The Cliff tonight for tea and we all had the Special Yorkshire pudding wrap with roast potatoes 😋 and Wow it was absolutely amazing never ever have i had a Sunday dinner in a Yorkshire pudding wrap before this was different level i wish id taken a picture the whole meal was beautiful tasted delicious Chef Paul definitely needs to get this on the main menu or a regular on the Special menu i’d be back every week, so if you fancy something different please try this week i even had other customers commenting on how good it looked well believe me it tasted even better! Went sat 25th nov … a evening with 3 course and entertainment!! Well eat can I say the food was really well presented prawn cocktail was amazing !! The beef was so tender … ohh the coffee and walnut dessert was out of this world .. fantastic night 10 out of10

My husband and I had a beautifully cooked lunch this afternoon from the Specials board. I chose crispy belly pork, mashed potatoes, veg and pepper sauce. It was delicious, bellypork really tasty and the mash creamy. My husband chose turkey and ham pot pie cooked with leeks and mushrooms topped with a puff pastry lid, chips and peas.He cleared his plate! There is always a friendly atmosphere in the pub and the staff are very kind and helpful.

What a place! Me and my partner came in as we’d heard rave reviews about the food so thought we’d give the carvery a try! Be warned, book in advance as the place was bustling! Atmosphere was spot on, warm and cosy and super friendly! Greeted by a member of staff at the door who showed us to our table! Partner went and ordered at the bar and then we proceeded to head to the carvery! Oh my god! First, the guys behind the counter were so lovely! Generous helpings of the meat, I got pork and beef (amazing), then the veg, all hot and fresh with new batches being brought out from the kitchen! Crispy yorkshires, piping hot mash and the carrots were spot on! Staff came to clear our plates and asked if I’d like anything wrapping up as I couldn’t finish it! Cannot fault the food Nor the service in this place! Can’t wait to come back for more food soon! 🖤

Very disappointed family group of 13 carvery veg was cold potatoes lumpy as was swede gravy too thick lumpy meat was delicious Yorkshire puddings burnt on outside uncooked in middle other qiest had panini with chips didn't enjoy no customer service plates were hardly touched no one asked if everything was ok this was a 60th celebration won't be going back

This is our first visit on a Sunday and it is exceptionally busy and popular. The website is not up to date re prices and what’s on offer. Yes, we knew the carvery was on but there were only a handful of other meals on offer. Staff were excellent, rearranging our seating to make it easier to access. You get a choice of 4 meats (2 at most) and a multiple selection of veg. We took a gravy boat and had 3 adult carveries and a smaller one for the baby. Meat was plentiful and tasty, veg excellent. Our other dish was beef and gravy in a bun with homemade chips. This did take a while to arrive but was tasty too. Dissapointing for us and seems a trend now is the extremely pricy soft drinks, £3! Way too much in our opinion, but other bars and restaurants are charging similar.

It does what it says on the tin. No messing about, no trying to be something they are not, just good, old fashioned pub grub of the highest order and very reasonably priced. Great menu and fast service. Highly recommended. I was going to take a photo of our meals but gluttony got the better of us.

Third time we have visited, always been good except today! Food poorly cooked, but for my friend and I it was the floor show that really that was deplorable! Two staff members having an argument, language disgusting! Definitely won’t be going back! It would have been nice if the manager had apologised on behalf on his staff!

Arrived today at a very busy venue which is always a good sign. We had to wait till 3pn for a seat but the lovely lady at the host desk said she would call it in when a table became free. I hardly had to wait. The food was awesome. So fresh. High quality meats and lots of it too. We will be back. Thank you

Great for food or just for a drink. The food is freshly cooked, very large portions and delicious. The fish was enormous, white flakes in a perfect batter. Lasagne - unbeatable, service brilliant.

Had Cumberland sausage, bubble and squeak with poached eggs from the specials board. It was delicious. My husband had fish and chips with mushy peas and salad which was excellent. Lots of people eating but service was prompt and staff friendly and attentive.

Lovely food here at The Cliff. The staff were friendly and obviously used regularly by locals cos everyone seemed to know everyone. Nice atmosphere tho and the food was good quality and excellent value. We booked for 12 thinking it would be quiet but everyone else must have has same idea cos it was extremely busy. Had to queue for food but it was nice and hot with plenty of choice both of meat and veg. Would definitely go again and try a later reservation next time. Thank you to all the staff who work extremely hard.

You must go here! The most beautiful pub, amazing food and a lovely atmosphere. I’d like to make a very special mention to the bar lady (with a southern accent and dark hair) was absolutely amazing. She truly went above and beyond and made such an effort with our table, she couldn’t do enough for us. So would be great for management to get this feedback to her :)

Heard good things about the takeaway Sunday lunches and as a family we were not disappointed, generous portions and the roast beef was melt in the mouth. 5/5 fantastic.

I went to The Cliff for the first time after lockdown the other day and it was great. All safety precautions were in order, the table service from the staff was great, under the difficult circumstances, and the food was excellent.

Called in for a meal , came here all the time before lockdown! Really disappointed, cold chips cold peas ! Basically tasteless !!

When I visit family in Sunderland we always try to have lunch in the Cliff. My mother is nearly 90 and she enjoys the food and friendly atmosphere.I love the food and the value for money (even better thanks to the government).The new decor has improved the place but the staff and food is still as good as ever. Can't fault any item on the menu but the fish and chips are exceptional, don't order extras unless you have a big appetite, the portions are big.

No social distancing, absolutely crammed, no order whatsoever, no effort made to protect customers. Not a comfortable experience.

The food in here is in a world of its own. Absolute quality you have to wait a bit ! but all good things comes to those who wait. The corned beef pie mash and gravy was fabulous. The gravy was unbelievable. Good service and a good pint, and a little help from Boris Johnson a great price. Top marks to the chef 10/10.

I've been going to The Cliff with my family for a good few years now. The service is brilliant, the staff are so friendly and welcoming. The food is brilliant, cooked well, tastes fresh. The carvery on a Wednesday and Sunday is delicious too.

Ticks all the boxes of a great pub and great pub food. Theres a really nice atmosphere in The Cliff and the staff are fab. Lots of choice and the food is good value for money. Defo a fave and will be returning :)

I go every week for the Wednesday and Sunday carvery and haven’t had a bad one. Would recommend to anyone.

I rang ahead and booked a table for two. However when we got there we were asked to wait 5 minutes for a table. We were shown to a table next to the toilets, in the walkway between the two rooms. The table was very wobbly, we couldn't seem to correct it. We ordered the meals at the bar, good menu, reasonable prices. Also the carvery was on too, which apppeared very popular. After only a few minutes at the table we quickly realised it was a very bad place to sit. There was a table next to us with several children on, that constantly ran around, in and out, no one asked them to behave, including their parents. It was a very busy area with staff and customers coming and going. People bumping us as they passed. We asked to change tables, and were told no. Which was extremely disappointing. The food was nice, tasty and hot. But I would not go back after this unpleasant experience.

Nice place, ticked away between terraces and decent housing back about 400m from the Roker Beach road. Staff were friendly and the locals canny. Food spot on, sane portions, good value. Sunday Carvery has to be the best value anywhere, quality meats (a choice of four) with a huge variety of veg and sauces to complement as well as good range of beers, can't get better than that.

What an absolute treat. Second time visiting The Cliff and it must certainly won't be the last. Absolutely fantastic carvery, choice of four beautifully cooked meats, a huge selection of well cooked veg, lovely crispy Yorkshire puddings and nice gravy with all the condiments you could want. For pudding there's a nice selection of traditional desserts. We opted for apple crumble which was delicious and served with a huge jug of custard. The manager and staff are all very friendly. I honestly can't recommend The Cliff highly enough.

I often go to the Cliff for lunch and have never been disappointed. The Lite Bite menu is a two course affair with soup or potato skins at £7.50 and a main course of around 6 choices including Gammon Steak, Mince and Dumplings etc.The manager and staff are very friendly and they have a great Sunday Carvery. I would recommend this pub for anyone wanting a good meal. They also have a good range of beers.

Note: booking is recommended as the place gets packed (obviously because everyone in Sunderland knew about The Cliffs amazing carvery apart from me).

Slightly overpriced hand-pulled beer and a distinct lack of a session beer i.e. a regular (or even permanent) session 3.8% ale at a reasonable price. The food is OK - typical pub food but nothing to complain about. A reasonably comfortable pub with a good atmosphere.

Called for a teatime meal on way to the theatre and had the light bite option. There was more than enough to eat with two courses which was served piping hot and with a genuine smile. Would definitely recommend.

Went to The Cliff for lunch today, for the 2nd time, having been last week. I ordered pork with spinach and dauphinois potatoes in a wild mushroom sauce. My partner had baked cod. The portions on both were generous and well presented, and the food hot and tasty. The service was friendly and the surroundings homely. My partner asked during the meal for some garlic butter to accompany her meal, which was brought fairly swiftly and at no extra cost. Proper, traditional home cooked food, a hidden gem. Can’t wait to try again next week.

Having lived round the corner to The Cliff for 4 years we decided it was time to go and have lunch there. Tasty freshly cooked food served within e decent waiting time.

We booked a family birthday at The Cliff for 8 people. We pre booked our meal which meant everything was organised and super efficient when we arrived. The staff were efficient and the food is good pub food, with generous portions. Excellent choice if you have people from different generations as we did.

My husband and I called in for our tea. Pleasant interior. Not a large menu but still plenty of choice including a specials board. I just wanted a tuna ciabatta but my husband chose liver and onions. We did wait a while but only really noticed when a couple who came in after us, had their meals delivered to the table.A short while later our meals came with a sincere apology that ours should not have taken so long. The person who brought the meals, the gentleman who came from the kitchen, the waitress who cleared away, all apologised and offered a free dessert. WE did not take up that offer as we were full, but the staff could not apologise enough. I must stress that we never complained at all and would be happy to go back as we did enjoy what we had. If you haven;t been then give it a go.

The food here is fantastic. Have eaten here a few times and have always really enjoyed my meal. HUGE portions and great selection on menu. Was in recently and there was a large family group in. Unfortunately their children were noisy and running about all over the pub. We left after a couple of drinks because we were sick of their parents letting them behave like that. It's a pub not a playground. Not The Cliff's fault, but maybe a member of staff should have had a word with the family. Kids shouldn't be running about in pubs.

Visited late on Sunday after hearing loads about it 2 sets of my friends were already in had the Large plate from the carvery 4 thick slices of turkey & 4 thick slices of beef plus roasties mash peas cabbage turnip colllie carrots yorkshire pud not choux and as much gray as you like because the plate was large I was able to get good potions on with out covering things up the amount was enough for me and Iam a big eater I liked the fact I could go back to get gravy as it was on a seperate table so you dont have to queue like some other places evry thing cooked the the way I like it will defo go back,

Visited here will colleagues for a meal. Food was exceptionally good value and of excellent quality. I'll definitely be back and be recommending to friends. Hunters chicken was a level above normal pub grub. Superb pub.

This was my first time visiting here and and it is definitely not my last. My food was absolutely perfect. I have been to many restaurants in my life and this is easily one of, or if not THE best I've ever been to. Where do I start! My main course was outstanding. I ordered the homemade burger and this was world class. You could tell right away it was homemade. It came with a side of onion rings which were simply sublime. Everything about this course was perfect and would not change a thing about it.Now the dessert. I did not think my visit to The Cliff could get any better but my gosh was I wrong. This was the icing on the cake for me (pardon the pun). I ordered the sticky toffee pudding and it was delightful. Melted in my mouth and wanted to order a few more to take home for myself! Not only the food was beautiful, but also the whole restaurant. The decoration, the people, the atmosphere, EVERYTHING. The staff are so kind and helpful and make the experience even better. The decorations are warm and inviting and give this place a very good feel. Yet again, PERFECT!Both courses were wonderful and truly outstanding. My wife and 3 children also all enjoyed and loved their meals and the experience very much and it is a guarantee we will be returning again in the near future! I highly highly highly recommend coming to The Cliff!

I've been to The Cliff for Sunday lunch pretty much every week since it started and the standard of it has only gotten better and better. There is a great selection of meat & veg for a very reasonable price. Would definitely recommend.

Family lunch with a big group of us, most went for the 2 courses for £6 option and the quality of food was decent for the price.I had pea soup followed by lasagne, most had potato skins and lasagne - no complaints from anyone. Service was also quick and friendly, and the pretty basic kids menu ticked the boxes for our little ones.It's a proper local pub that we used to frequent regularly when we lived in the area, so it was nice to go back and visit now that it also serves food.

Had heard loads of fantastic reviews of the food but hadn't had chance to try it until last month. Took the family for the Sunday carvery and it more than lived up to expectations. Food was beautifully cooked and fresh. Service was fab and the portions were huge. We'll defo be back soon
