Dog friendly, all really nice and offered us water for him. Average american food, was okay but not the best in the world. staff were friendly :)

I was on anti depressants at the time and I assume it was caused by that. The doorman treated me like I was a junkie and I was told I must of took drugs before coming out. Many people witnessed this, i've never been more mortified in my life. I had not even started drinking yet. It was before any lockdown. I fully remember him, he didn't care about anything I said to him.

Visited here for breakfast while on a city break in Edinburgh. The food and service was excellent. There was a very good variety to the breakfast. Bacon, sausage, fried egg, beans, tomato, mushrooms, hash brown, haggis, black pudding, toast and butter. All of which tasted really good and helped to set me up for the day ahead. The hot chocolate which I also ordered was very good too. Meals are served all day here and everything was Covid secure which was good to see.

Had to sit outside due to covid rules, but pleased to say we had a warm service, the lady gave us a blanket to as my wife was freezing an we had a breakfast roll each an it was perfect, highly recommended staff were great an polite an nice wee touches on our food packaging lovely little notes that they written

Este lugar estaba justo al final de la calle de mi hotel, lo había notado en mi primer día, así que lo visité. Un menú completo de comida sabrosa, infinitas opciones, excelentes cosas. El personal es muy amable y no pudo hacer más durante mi estancia allí, ¡sin duda volveré en el futuro!

Visited here on a Monday night, hadn't made a booking but thankfully they had a table available. Server was very friendly and nothing we asked for was a problem. We had vegan/vegetarian food and it was delicious. Highly recommend!

Este lugar fue una verdadera joya. Fuimos allí 4 veces en el transcurso de una semana principalmente porque era realmente el mejor lugar para desayunar (la comida es tan buena como en Edi). Los precios también son razonables para la comida que se obtiene y el personal es el más amable. Realmente te cuidan y están ahí para ti en cada paso del camino. Su organización CoVid también es muy buena y están bien preparados para todo.

Great service, great nachos and onion rings. The burgers and also the hot dogs are tasteful and good portions! Try the cocktails as well. Worth a visit for a chill evening or night out.

Lovely cafe, very clean with friendly staff. The breakfast was fabulous - I had pancakes and my partner had a sausage bun and it was all delicious.

The interior is amazing, bright and retro. The servers were all kind and accommodating. Ordered breakfast here which was lovely, and cocktails large and reasonably priced.

Stopped for breakfast here whilst in Edinburgh. Really, really good coffee and a tasty veggie breakfast, including veggie haggis (and they kindly allowed us to swop items).Friendly, professional service and dog friendly too. Really cool diner style and well spaced out in current circumstances.Would certainly return.

We visited the City Cafe twice on our trip to Edinburgh for breakfast - they were always very busy - though could always sit us - and seem to have a reputation among Edinburgh locals for their retro feel!We loved the food, and the staff, in particular, were so friendly and welcoming. When we had a slight food mix-up, they were very apologetic and funny, so much that it just felt as though we were in the company of family.Especially recommend the Scrambled Eggs on Toast (pictured)!

I'm gonna drive another 350 miles just to have the chips again. The staff were accommodating, the food was good - they were still doing their breakfast menu at 9pm at night so obviously I had that since I'm not up early enough for breakfast these days...Only downside is that they put us at a tiny table in the corner, we could barely fit both of us around it so I had to sit sideways and then the plates didn't fit on the table either.

Had two amazing breakfasts here. Very good ambiance considering social distancing guidelines. The welcome was warm and friendly with clear guidelines to safety throughout. But the main event of course was the breakfast. Excellent quality with amazing haggis which I must recommend. Next time I visit Edinburgh I will be trying this place out in the evening too.

If I could give this place 6* I would. We visited here during our visit to the 2019 Fringe Festival in August. The service was outstanding,they were very accommodating of our golden retriever, made a fuss of her and gave us a larger table so she could relax while we ate. The all day Scottish breakfast was delicious(even tried haggis) the cocktails were good too and used premium spirits. They have comedy shows and live acts on downstairs if you wanted to watch or you could relax upstairs. This place is a jem, it's an American diner with a Scottish twist. #HonestMary

We made a special journey to have breakfast at The City Café as I had heard so many great things about it- and it did not disappoint! I had an amazing Scottish breakfast for around £8 and it was delicious. The portion sizes are big and I got to try Haggis for the first time, which was nice! I would recommend coming here if you want to try a Scottish breakfast whilst visiting Edinburgh- as I can’t imagine you will find a better one anywhere else. The place was really cool and quirky and we felt really comfortable and relaxed there.

Popped here for a bit of a late breakdast/lunch whilst we was on a trip in Edinburgh. It was the morning we left so looked for one of the best cafe's in town and this came up. Unfortinatly I did think it was a little over-rated.We was asked to take a seat at the bar first because it was quite busy, nothing new and was fine. We waited a little bit and didn;t get asked if we wanted to order a drink or anythig, managed to grab someone and get a drink ordered then waitied a bit lnger as was seated.The menu came and it looked a great menu, we ordered our food and I was expecting from the description something pretty epic, I was dissapointed as it was quite a standard brger. It was nice and enjoyable but nothing that blew my head off in all honesty. Similar situation with the pancaskes, just nothing amazing. To say it is so highly rated I did expect something better than average.

Speciaal hierheen voor het ontbijt dat de hele dag geserveerd wordt. Dit was een lekker ontbijt (veel ook). Haggis en black pudding om uit te proberen is ook leuk. Wel een erg populair café met een wachtrij voor een zitplek.

I couldn’t believe how constantly busy this cafe was on a wet and windy Monday , possibly a lot of regulars as the food is superb served by friendly staff with very interesting decor. Would highly recommend.

Called in on Saturday evening before the theatre, the place was busy but quickly shown to a table, menu looked interesting and order quickly taken. Food was excellent and the only negative comment I could make was the Burger was served on a wooden board plus a black serviette under the burger, would have prefered it on a plate. Excellent service!

Wow! Amazing vegan fry, reasonably priced for being on the Royal Mile and if that wasn’t proof the place is always packed, no matter what time of day! A hidden gem just of the mile with options for all dietary requirements!

On y a brunché un samedi vers 10h30. Le décor est celui d’un « diner » à l’américaine mais rassurez-vous, la cuisine est bien écossaise! On a été installés et servis rapidement mais dans les minutes qui ont suivi, le restaurant s’est rempli a une vitesse folle. On a commandé le petit déjeuner typique et dans notre large assiette, nous avons pu déguster des œufs frits, une saucisse, des haricots en sauce tomate, des tranches de pain toastées, des champignons, des potato scones, du haggis et du black pudding. Si le haggis et le black puddings peuvent vous déplaire (c’est particulier... et gras), le reste est très bon. Le service est sympathique et rapide et l’addition tout à fait raisonnable (compter une douzaine d’euros par personne), surtout que c’est tellement copieux que vous serez calés jusqu’au soir.

Five of us came in for a lunch on a Saturday. It’s a lovely place with an American Diner style menu. Service was a little slow as it took 40 mins for our food to arrive. One main course was incorrect with the waiter (first day) assuming we wanted a Piti Burger rather than Chicken and rice and one salad arrived rather than two. Food was ok. Macaroni Cheese was a bit dry and soup warm. Problems raided were corrected and Bill discounted so they did respond.

headed to the city cafe in Blair street having come straight from the airport for a long weekend in Edinburgh. saw the reviews and thought we'd try it. friendly staff and atmosphere. clean. went for the supervise breakfast. £11 including coffee. looked nice but little flavour coming off the meat, cakes and veg. a little disappointing.

I went to this place twice for breakfast during my stay in Edinburgh. Generous breakfast, good for value, friendly staff, good service. They have a lot of food choices in their menu, too. Great coffee as well. I recommend it.

This cafe is the worst I can remember going to. Friends had invited us to lunch there or I would have gone to somewhere with a better vegan menu, but we thought "how bad can it be?" VERY BAD. The utter contempt they showed to us by serving dishes this terrible is inexcusable.

This place is not child friendly at all. Very first visit and took my 2 year old some lunch. ( soup in a sterile air locked container) he has a tracheostomy so needs blended smooth food.

Tonight was our Xmas night out in Edinburgh along with many others. An incident occurred where a pool cue was snapped. The manager approached our group and accused that we were responsible for snapping the pool cue and had swore at a member of our staff. This was an unfortunate mix up.

We arrived and were seated straight away, the restaurant was not busy so we ordered straight away. Simple hotdog and sweet potato fries for hubby and veggie hotdog and fries for me.

Me and my dog Ernie popped in as I had heard this place was dog friendly and boy was it! Young lady with blonde hair served us and was so so pleasant I can’t emphasise how nice the staff are in this cafe who made us so welcome. The food was really tasty especially the breakfast, you really can’t beat a Scottish fry up. And their white chocolate cheesecake was the best I’ve ever had!! Will definitely return with Ernie again soon.

Nice setting and looked OK, but boy the food was awful. American style diner that looked good with nice booths - however the club sandwich that I ordered was dry and tasted of nothing, whilst the burger was rubbery and frankly tasted strange - chunky fries were the only saving grace. Surely not difficult to do better than this......

Had a great breakfast in this cafe and it was fast. Having said that, during the Festival it's very busy so be warned. It's usually filled with festival performers. So if the like the place there's a good chance that you might like it to.

Had breakfast here and food was good. However didn't think the coffee was great at £3 for filter coffee with top ups. Coffee was quite strong and not really hot. Had to ask twice for a top up. Price of food was OK but not coffee.

Went Sunday late morning for brunch had the full breakfast with side order of pancakes absolutely fab! Piping hot great haggis on breakfast hot coffee, lovely clean restaurant with very friendly staff...because it's so popular be prepared to wait for a table..we waited 15 mins but totally worth it

Food not brilliant at all. I had pancakes with fruits. Pancakes were ok £5 for 3, but too much golden sirup and fruits: 1 strawbery, 6 blueberries and 3 raspberries, for which you have to pay extra £2.

Love this place Yes you may have to wait to be seated for about 10 minutes but the staff are helpful and friendly and the food is great Only let down was the maple syrup taste like golden syrup and not real

Being 100% U.S. my wife and I ABSOLUTELY LOVED our meal here during our honeymoon. I can honestly say I am still looking for a replacement for those BBQ ribs. They were perfectly sweet and simple which is actually hard to find in the U.S. as we love to dry rub, fry, and/or char our delicious ribs. My wife also loved the selection and we both were enthralled at the newspapers around the restaurant. If anyone is also from SoCal, picture the Corvette Diner but better!

Stopped by after my partner finished work and we enjoyed a lovely tomato soup and carbonara, we both loved it! Was served by tara who was very friendly and hard working during the busy period of the day.

Whilst on a short break to Edinburgh with friends my brother told me we had to stop here for breakfast. He had discovered the City Cafe whilst on a stag do & then a few years later recommended it to my parents when they visited this great city.

Got the bacon and sausage morning roll, girlfriend got bacon and pancakes, was scrumptious, will definitely go back when we return to Edinburgh

I love this cafe! Been here every time I visit Edinburgh. Real American style breakfast menu, perfect hangover cure if youre on holiday with your mates. Also love the old school American diner decor with the duke box 👌👌 yaas!

I love this place and although I like to try different places to eat, I cant bring myself to eat breakfast anywhere else when I visit Edinburgh because it is sooooooooo good! The cafe 50s vibe, music and posters are cool and relaxing and hark back to an era less modern and I like that. So do my partner and his 14 year old son. The breakfasts are freshly cooked, excellent value in terms of produce and excellent value for money. I have never fully finished the big breakfast it is so big. The pancake stack I am told by the 14 year old is awesome and tasty and well nice. The rest of the menu looks great too. I have been with friends, family and work colleagues and everyone has loved it.

Visited up from Newcastle upon Tyne with my son for breakfast during the Fringe Festival. The place had only been open roughly 30 minutes and it was already almost completely full. We did get one of the few tables still available and got our orders in, we were served our drinks quickly and our food wasn’t too far behind. Especially considering how busy it was.

We were attending a number of events near this during the Edinburgh Festival and were surprised by the price of the all day breakfast offering here. The prices generally are somewhat inflated during festival time but at this cafe I guess that they were charging their normal prices. I had a large breakfast with a cup of Joe for £11.99. The standard breakfast was £8.99 and a was £3.00 so in effect you got the upgraded breakfast free. This up is fine as long as you don’t want a more exotic coffee.

With it being festival season in Edinburgh we were looking for somewhere to eat. Daughter recommended this place & can say it’s worthy of a visit. Place was busy but didn’t have to wait long for a table, service was good, quick and easy! Food was great. Great choice on menu and definitely will be back!

We went for breakfast at this cafe. It was close to our hotel so easy walk to get to. The prices were decent, the staff was friendly, nice place to eat at but the food was just ok. I had the french toast with bacon my mom had the pancakes and we felt it was way to sweet. It would have been much better had they put the syrup on the side and we could add how much we wanted vs them being drowned in syrup. The milkshakes weren't great either. They were not very thick like a shake should be. to me it tasted like chocolate milk.

One of the worst places in Edinburgh. For sure the staff is in the edge you can stand to deal with. They were rude, un polite and useless. Never go back again.

Visited on our way back to the hotel and have to say that the wine was very poor. We had just eaten at a tex mex where the wine was exceptional. Do the staff or management ever try the drinks themselves. I think not

A juke box, James Dean posters, Beach Boys music, a long counter with chair and the typical tables of a diner from the US. Good breakfast on the menu. I ate the porridge with Blueberry compot, and cranberrry juice. Lovely place, cheerful and good service.

We had the french toast and scrambled eggs, both of which were delicious. The milkshakes were also really nice, with a good range of flavours to choose from. The atmosphere of this diner is really cool with a very American feel.

Ontbijten hier is OK. Genoeg keuze voor redelijke prijs. Ook hier helaas geen verse jus d' Orange maar uit een pak.....

Had breakfast here which was very good apart from the bacon it was cut with a razor blade and dried up everything else was excellent buy decent bacon you charge enough for a breakfast only thing that let it down really

I came upon this restaurant when I spied a life size Elvis in the doorway! I ventured in and the dining room looked like an American Diner, with rolled leather-like fabric. The beer pulls and full bar on what would be a cooking grill side made me realize I was not in Kansas anymore.

This place is easy to find and off the royal mile :) The menu is really extensive and I wish we could have tried more! We had the full Scottish and tried haggis for the first time - delicious!! The milkshakes were awesome too, definitely good to clear a hangover up! Really cheap for what you get

Situated just off The Royal Mile and obviously used by the locals this was a great find. The menu is extensive, portion size and quality excellent with free hot drink refills. The staff and the atmosphere were lovely.

Location was convenient to Safestay Edinburgh Hostel and right next to the Department of Magic Escape Rooms. Food was delicious and plentiful and you can order breakfast all day long. Our 12 students returned again and again during our stay.

Good atmosphere, Amercian style decorated diner, food was average but nice, not too expensive, just what we needed before our Sing City experience downstairs within City Cafe.

Every time my wife and I visit Edinburgh we always use the City Cafe for breakfast and what a find it has been over the years a large menu to choose from well cooked very clean with excellent service can be busy at times but still quick service will use again highly recommend

No puedo creer que haya vivido en la ciudad durante tanto tiempo y no haya visitado este gran lugar. La acogida fue muy amable. El personal estaba justo en el botón con el nivel de atención y servicio. La comida era muy sabrosa, tuve el chili y fue muy sabrosa. Mi amigo tenía tostadas francesas con tocino y jarabe de arce. Nunca he probado nada igual y lo correcto era una tostada francesa! Su lado de batatas fritas también se ven. La música era de 70 s 89 s, así que es perfecta para los oldies y en un nivel que aún te permite tener una conversación. Esto va a ser un lugar habitual para mí de ahora en adelante. No bebimos pero notamos que el bar tenía una buena y variada selección de cervezas también. Y por último, los precios eran razonables. Pagamos un poco más de 30 libras por nuestros dos platos principales más un lado que sirve papas fritas y una ensalada (demasiado para poder comerlo todo en realidad) con refrescos, lo cual es más que razonable para esta área de la ciudad.

More likely to be served a cocktail if you are under age. Went for a drink with friends late, I used to drink here when I was younger it used to be a cool place..the person at the door made us feel uncomfortable, the barman when asked for a cocktail said they were not serving cocktails anymore, two minutes later another barman shaking cocktails for probability under age people...not cool.

It’s hidden in one of the side streets. Always probably filled, but turnover is quite fast. Servings can be shared. Loved the chili con carne. Yummy. Must try. We ended up here becase there was a long queue at the Edinburgh Larder. Wasn’t sorry at all. Burp.

A great place for breakfast! The service was a little slow but I guess this is to be expected when a restaurant is so popular. I would recommend you go here and try the french toast, maple syrup and bacon! Yum!

The City Cafe is on Hunter Square just off the Royal Mile. Had breakfast there twice. The food was great, but the place is truly unique. Think a 60s-70s Mel's Diner setting. The music, the movie posters, Elvis - it's all there! Mostly booths. Not sure what happens to the menu later in the day; suspect it doubles as a pub at night. Really great experience!

Diner has great burgers and shakes. Family enjoyed theirs including chili cheese fries. I had California chicken burger which was 2 chicken breasts on a bun with cheese and guacamole. Very good! We had rib appetizer which rivals some of the best. We each had a milkshake which is topped with chocolate or butterscotch sauce and whipped cream. The night we were there, we joined in on trivia. Fun night!

Came here for breakfast as they serve it all day. Walking into here was like walking back in time to the 80’s. I couldn’t believe how much character this place shown and it was amazing. Every where you look there is so much history and detail you could spend all day staring at their walls. Even their menu exploded this restaurants personality with quirky names and images. They also can provide a vegan/gf menu if needed. I went for the Castro – named after Fidel Castro, which was poached eggs with smoked salmon and hollandaise sauce served on a toasted muffin. This was £8 which is amazing value! The food came pretty quickly and tasted good. The salmon wasn’t very fresh – it was one of the saltiest I’ve ever had but wasn’t bad. The coffee was also really yummy and strong. It was a great spot overall and couldn’t have been happier.

This is the first place we went to when we arrived in Edinburgh. Both myself and my girlfriend decided to go for the Scottish breakfasts. We were not disappointed. Great size breakfast, full of flavour and a great cup of coffee! Thank you!

Essendo allergico ad alcuni alimenti ho chiesto al personale cosa potessi mangiare, non hanno neanche provato ad informarsi a riguardo, ci hanno fatto alzare ed andare via visto che non si sentivano di servirmi in quanto non volevano prendersi responsabilità, non mi era mai successo, sono rimasto molto deluso, non ci tornerò.

Llegamos aquí a desayunar un domingo por la mañana alrededor de las 10 am. Estaba muy ocupado, esperamos unos 10 minutos por una mesa y conseguimos algunos menús para navegar mientras esperábamos. Pedí una pila de 3 tortitas con nutella y mi esposo pidió el gran desayuno completo. Mi esposo declaró el desayuno 10/10 con haggis y pudín negro, así como los sospechosos habituales. También recibió una taza de té gratis con el gran desayuno que él disfrutó. Mis tortitas eran sabrosas y esponjosas y venía con 2 sobres de nutella. Mi única queja fue que el jarabe de arce ya estaba sobre los panqueques, por lo que estaban bastante saturados. Si volvía, lo pediría de lado, ¡pero eso es más una preferencia personal!

Lekker makkelijk restaurant. Gewoon een goed gevuld ontbijt met koffie of thee voor $9.50. Ook de toast met roerei met bacon of zalm zijn goed. Het restaurant heeft een Amerikaanse look, met Elvis die je opwacht bij de deur. Toiletten zijn buiten verwachting goed en schoon.

The food was ok, i found it a bit too greasy/cold and way too much of it. Went for the veggie breakfast. Nothing overly wrong though. Staff were lovely, the interior is American styled and pretty cool. Liked the free tea and coffee with breakfast.

My frequent Edinburgh office, always my ideal place between meetings, this was my first time with 3 kids under 13. Perfect service and really fun. Great food and atmosphere. Not just for work!

Amazing Brunch on a rainy day, tucked away just off the Royal Mile. Loved the decor (50’s Americana).
