Great breakfast, lots to choose from. Very nice

My girlfriend and I came for breakfast, it was really delicious! The bacon and maple pancakes are brilliant. The scrambled eggs are also really really good! My girlfriend had the scrambled egg and sausages roll and said how good it was. Really 10/10! Also the American Diner aesthetic was really pleasant. I recommend it!

A very disappointing experience. Arrived really hungry, asked for chilli beef nachos as I needed to eat protein for a medical condition. Nachos came out meat free. I asked for the beef chilli, they took my plate away, I waited and waited. Eventually, the second plate came out - still meet free again. Staff asked me to please wait again, they’d bring me just the beef chilli as a priority. Waited another 15 minutes without any food or apology from management. Manager walked past me smiling without speaking to me or offering any explanation. Eventually spoke to the duty manager who patronised me and who had ignored the situation. They didn’t charge me for our drinks but didn’t apologise and say the drinks are on us etc, they just let us leave without paying. I was really ill with low blood sugar by this point. Would never come back here for food, no idea what the kitchen staff are up to; or not, whilst on duty. Will be reaching out to management too.

Excellent place for breakfast. I was looking for a vegan breakfast and found this cafe. Great place I've you are in there and food was amazing.

A wonderful place for brunch with kids. Excellent American diner theme and they had fantastic Halloween decorations up. They were so accommodating when my kids needed to swap something from their meal. Plus the adults all enjoyed their meals too. I only managed to take a photo of one of my eggs as I ate the other.

I was very well attended to on site, I felt there was a lack of support via WhatsApp to speed up service and clarify doubts quickly.

Went to get a Scottish breakfast from here. The food was really decent. The service was a bit slow at times, so make sure you aren't in a rush when you visit. They were very flexible with substitutions on meals, which was great! Overall not a bad experience at all.

Always have a great experience at The City Cafe. Staff are friendly, it's always been quiet enough not to have to wait for a table, but busy enough for a good atmosphere and the food is lush! The French Toast is a must!

Came here for a drink before a show at the fringe fest. Overpriced and poorly made cocktails. Very disappointed with the drink and the service. If you want a drink before the comedy club then do not be fooled by going in here first.

A city institution with an art-deco American diner decor, it's been decades since my last visit but my daughter goes there every now and again so decided we should pop in for lunch as we were in the area. The food was rather ordinary - my nachos appeared to have been microwaved, with the cheese having melded itself into the paper lining the plastic basket, so I ended up accidentally getting paper in the odd mouthful. Daughter's dirty fries were fine, according to them. There really wasn't any atmosphere to speak of, but that might be because it was just after 3pm so not really a time when the place would normally be buzzing. Service was good & pretty swift, and there wasn't the usual experience of waiting forever to catch the eye of staff to get the bill - so too marks for attentiveness! Overall, the food filled a hole but wasn't anything special. I don't see myself rushing back anytime soon though as there are much better options available in town.

Adapted gluten-free breakfasts, without contamination. They give you gluten-free bread if you want and the menu says what does NOT contain gluten. Celiacs, you can have breakfast in peace, my celiac wife was not contaminated.

Absolutamente horrenda experiencia. Extremadamente decepcionado con el servicio que me ofrecieron. Un miembro del personal me hizo sentir mal, con respecto a mí alternando mi desayuno escocés completo debido a que estaba embarazada. Se equivocó de orden, lo que se puede entender considerando lo ocupado que está. Sin embargo, lo que no me gustó es que me apartara para intentar demostrarme que lo que escribió para mi pedido era correcto. Me sentí avergonzado en ese momento y descontento con el nivel de descaro.

I really enjoy this place. All of things they got wrong about American diners are the worst part of American diners. The food is excellent, coffee is great, and the staff is always super friendly and accommodating to large groups. I went here multiple times during the Fringe. I then left and went to the US where the diners are far worse. City Cafe is awesome. Highly recommend.

We went here during the fringe festival a super busy period for this place. Our food came not quite as we asked for burger still had all the salad ect and the veggie hotdog originally was given a meat one (which staff realised in the nick of time) We were told the burger would be removed from our bill but instead the gratuity and service was removed. All the wait staff we interacted with were lovely and incredibly professional we would not have made any complaints if we knew that staff would lose their tip instead of the price of a burger being removed. Especially during such a busy period they deserve every penny of the gratuity.

Laid back and very casual. If you want quick in and out , go somewhere else. This place allowed us to relax and meet some locals .

The chips were among the worst alive ever tasted, with a taste and smell of rancid oil. Some overcooked, some undercooked. Time to clean the fryer or use new oil.

This was my second visit and was just as good as the first. The waiter was lovely, not at all pushy, very friendly and professional. The tea / coffee were served quickly and the pancakes followed shortly after. They were delicious. I'll definitely be back. Thank you.

This place was a great find! We just arrived in Edinburgh and needed a bite to eat and this place didn’t disappoint. The caramel latte I had was probably the best one I’ve ever had to be honest! The food was good too! Can’t fault this place at all!

Googled places to have Breakfast on our day trip and this place came up. American style inside and proper portions of good food well cooked. Especially liked that the coffee came in a proper mug and not some fancy glass. Reasonably prices in todays climate. Will be calling agian if back up there

Popped in after one of the Taylor concerts. The food was absolutely amazing, so was the service! They were pretty packed and had a constant queue of people but there was no franticness - the vibes were immaculate and it was such a cool diner! I went for the veggie scottish breakfast and it BANGED! Also, the vanilla milkshake??? BANGED AS WELL.

The interior reminded me of America. The portions were large, plentiful, and heavy, but the food was good. The price was reasonable, and the service was friendly.

Never disappoints food wise (especially Full Scottish Breakfast!) but they are always under staffed and this affects service.

Food really disappointing. Nice place, service was fine but the food wasn't great. Chips, which should be amazing in a diner, were undercooked. Fish fingers looked like the cheapest frozen ones you could buy and tasted like they looked. Shame since there could be great potential here. Maybe an off day but we won't be back anytime soon.

We had the full Scottish breakfast and the gluten free breakfast, both very tasty. Very good service, friendly staff Be aware that the gluten free breakfast is cooked in the same frier as the gluten containing ingredients so not suitable for everyone.

Firstly, don't let the outside put you off, we walked past this place a couple of times without batting an eyelid and it was only after googling places for breakfast, we found this! From the outside it looks nothing special, but when you step inside its like a tardis! Fantastic American diner theme and exceptional menu choices. Give it a go, you won't be disappointed! Highly recommend 👌

Great ambience in US diner style. Very friendly, helpful service staff. The full Scottish breakfast was very good and surprisingly the Americano was also very good. The decoration is worth seeing, and a life-sized “Elvis” greets you at the door.

The music Sat night was on point and loved the service. Made for a great pre-game stop.

I was very impressed with breakfast. Everything was cooked to perfection, the bacon was just the right amount of crispy, the hash browns were beautiful and the sausage and haggis were of good quality. Service was professional, friendly and quick. It was quiet when I first went in but started to get people through the door. From the outside it doesn't look like a place that serves breakfast but it was recommended to me and it didn't disappoint. If it hadn't been recommended I think I would've walked right past.

Exceptional service, w needed a charger, and they were tremendously helpful. Food was good too, loved the fries!

Always a warm welcome from staff. The food is brilliant, good value for money, and tasty. Great cocktail list and love a game of pool when here. Though the pool cue tips could do with replacing. Also student discount which comes in handy!

Great little hole in the wall just off the Mile. You have to know it's there to know!! Dont let the 'American cafe' fool you! Great full English/Scottish breakfast with all the haggis you want! And then get a picture with Elvis!

After a rather weary trek around Edinburgh, we stumbled across this place, from the outside both myself and my wife were thinking great things, we thought if they just had chairs and a diet coke, we would be happy. On entry though, the giant Elvis at the door and the American stylie diner within was a big surprise, we were greeted by a lovely chap with a big smile, seated in a comfy booth, and looked after. The food was quick and very tasty also priced very well. The place was so nice we visited again the next day, lovely place.

Had a very warm welcome and were happy for me to sit with a coffee (they have oat milk) at 10pm on a Saturday night using my laptop (plenty of sockets) - stayed for a drink afterwards and they had a fantastic DJ on. Really nice decoration. Kind of Amrican Diner / breakfast bar vibes. Really nice staff all smiling and was just a good atmosphere. Will be back as it's open so late and I prefer working at night!

A favourite of mine for breakfasts. Finally got to bring my kids here. They enjoyed the breakfasts too.

Passable restaurant. The menu is similar to that of pubs with a choice of burgers, nachos, pancakes, etc. The prices are quite high and none of us really enjoyed our dish. We were not impressed by the atmosphere. Nice service though.

Brilliant place to eat with a huge menu. We went in for breakfast and the atmosphere was great, food was great and well presented, and the staff was friendly and welcoming. The only down side was the veggie sausages, which were the old style that has pieces of vegetables inside. The newer sausage alternatives go down much better.

Waffles dry and in ersatz thick sticky "maple" syrup – hard to eat. "Flat white" nondescript under a hood of foam. Would be fine in a greasy-spoon cafe, but I expected better from the location, rating and the price. But it's just off the Mile so presumably gets lots of tourist footfall regardless of what they serve. Oh, also not so impressed by the 10% service charge sneaked on and charged without telling me.

Got a large full Scottish. It was very large and very filling. Very tasty.

Great location for a bite to eat, will add we had a toddler with us. We were made to feel at home and the staff couldn't have made us feel more welcome. Weren't rushed and given plenty of time to decide what we wanted to eat. 100% will be back in future. One thing to add the nachos were huge, and that was the individual portion, I can't wait to see how big the sharing ones are!

I tried the haggis for the first time, it’s all smashed and made into a patty like black budding but softer. The taste was ok, i liked to stuff them into the potato pastry as it is empty inside, and it was delicious. The service is great, warm and efficient, atmosphere here is quiet and space is big. Would definitely recommend to anyone who wants to have a great breakfast with more choices.

Googled this place before we visited and didn't disappointed. We were staying at the radisson blu hotel which is 2 minutes walk away but never had breakfast there came here ever morning ( much better value and taste) staff were very friendly and the breakfast is excellent loads of choice with an American theme my husband always had the 'full Scottish ' I tried the French toast and granola all very tasty good value for money considering you are in Edinburgh and nothing is cheap. Only negative is it doesn't open till 9am for breakfast, if your on a days exploring and want an early start could do with it opening earlier as our last day we had a long drive home and set of early so missed out on our last breakfast 😏
