The Church is a lovely old pub in the heart of the Jewellery Quarter with quirky decor, a fantastic range of cocktails and an amazing Sunday Roast. Staff are friendly and helpful and it was lovely to see a few regulars on the Sunday we were in there. Definitely worth a visit - particularly for the huge and amazingly good value Sunday Roast.

This pub has become my local, despite being over a 20 minute walk away. Have been many times over the last 18 months and it's never let me or my friends down, whether that is for a solo pint or a large gathering of friends. My most recent visit was for a Sunday roast, where James and his team seated us down, took our orders and accommodated some awkward food allergies, kept us well hydrated and fed until we were stuffed. The roast beef is a delight and so is the cauli cheese. I've also been here for their quiz night, every Thursday, and it's always full. Booking is advised!

One of the great, unheralded delights of life is walking into a pub with zero expectations and being utterly floored by what you find. And, let’s be honest, in an age where chain restaurants and the ghastly Wetherspoons have sucked the soul out of so many British high streets, such a discovery feels almost miraculous. But then, Birmingham, like London, still remembers how to do a pub properly. It’s an art form, you know. And The Church Pub and Dining Room proves it’s still alive and well. Walking through the door here felt like coming home—well, not literally home (I don’t have a bar in my house or some random bloke with a dog permanently camped out in the corner), but it just feels right. That soft, comforting glow. The murmur of proper conversation. The soft scrape of chairs on wooden floors. And the barman? A man who can pour a Guinness with the sort of care and precision that makes you want to give him a round of applause. You don’t get that in a chain. There’s no ridiculous fuss on the menu here either. No sourdough platters or tapas-esque small plates masquerading as a meal. No, on the bar sat a simple menu: pie and pint. That’s it. It’s the sort of food that doesn’t need to try too hard because it knows what it is. Proper pub food. And what a revelation that is in 2024. And the pie? Very, very good indeed. Rich, deep flavours wrapped in pastry that could hold its own in any kitchen. The kind of meal you dig into with a smile on your face, a pint within arm’s reach, and no sense of time passing, because this is what pubs are for. For being. For stopping, sitting, and soaking it all in. The Church doesn’t try to be clever. It’s just excellent, and in today’s pub landscape, that’s enough to make it feel like a small, personal victory. Birmingham does a pub properly, and thank God for that.

So far I've never had the food, but I like the Church for a drink on a Saturday night. The staff are friendly and the pub but is a cosy place to sit and chat while having a drink from their wide selection. The playlist often has a 90s indie vibe which I enjoy. They also serve sandwiches and chips until late for those who skipped dinner and regret it later - that adds several points in my books! The roof terrace is an unexpectedly lovely spot on a summer evening

Popped in for a couple of pints, there was a nice selection of beers and a very impressive selection of soft drinks on draught. Barman was sound, friendly service. Can't comment on the food as I didn't eat here. Was told of the happy hour with 2 for 1 on cocktails but as I was with my kid, I declined it this time! Sat on the rooftop terrace which was a lovely setting to have a drink in. This was the first pub I ever had a drink in, back in 1997. It's definitely changed a lot for the better since then, a reflection of how the surrounding area has also become something different to back then.

Such a shame, not one to bash independent’s, but maybe the reason the pub was empty. After reading rave reviews, and on point social media, we attended for my 30th Birthday. Two Buttermilk Chicken Burgers, a pint of attic brew & a Diet Coke, onion rings, blue cheese sauce & gravy. Empty venue, 40 minute wait, and then scraps of burnt deep fried chicken on a stale bun. Chips fantastic, blue cheese sauce great, gravy that was 100% made with far too much bisto, and burnt onion rings that were greasy and poorly battered. Overall, incredibly disappointing.

Embarassing! I’d booked this following amazing reviews from local food bloggers. Arrived into a freezing cold, gloomy pub with an equally freezing welcome. Shown into a ‘dining space’ which was empty, freezing and unwelcoming. Drinks were nice, that’s where it stops. Mushroom starter was basic given the description, burnt toast and tepid temperature: mains arrived and veg sent back for being cold, returned warmish with no apology. Main of roast beef was so tough and cold. I returned my main to an uninterested server who didn’t do anything to rectify the issue, she didn’t even come over to ask how it could be rectified. Just left me with nothing. Plates cleared with no basic customer service “how was everything” nothing! An absolute shambles and an embarrassment to hospitality. We paid our bill and left under a cloud.

We celebrated our engagement party here in October and really could not fault The Church one bit. From the moment we asked to view the ‘dining room’, your team was incredibly welcoming, friendly and responsive - answering all our (many!) questions and offering support where needed with the menu. The stresses of the day (decorating etc.) were hugely alleviated by you accommodating us; letting us in earlier to decorate and offering your help when needed. As for the party itself, it was also great. It was a nice surprise learning that the cocktails were 2-4-1 at the start of the night. And even though the cocktails had to be made (and ordered) in the main pub, our bartender took our orders in the dining room and brought over our cocktails, which was a lovely touch. The food was delicious and we had our guests saying how nice the food was. The beers were also great, and was a reasonable price. The Church held our decorations and took us no more than 5 minutes to collect the next day. Everybody, including ourselves had a great time in all respects. Would definitely recommend these for a function - or a casual visit - as the food, drinks and service were all amazing.

What a meal! Simply stunning food. The Church should be sold out every day such is the quality of the food here, I can't believe it wasn't busier. Everything we had was superb, but the beef Sunday roast was one of the best I've had in a restaurant in a long time. We were very greedy and shared three starters too, which were all delicious but probably a bit too much food in total for just the two of us. Nevermind, nothing went to waste! My only criticism was the toasted sourdough was a bit crispy, and I'd have loved the scotch egg to have a runny yolk. But these are minor points in an otherwise perfect meal with faultless service from the great staff.

Service and food are way overpriced and ridiculously slow service on the terrace. Ordered on the app when arrived, came out in dribs and drabs after chasing 3 times after an hour when told it would only be 20 minutes, by this time we ordered a roast from the kitchen downstairs which came out and was eaten before the the tacos and wings arrived from the bbq on the terrace. The Roast was ok but far too overpriced. Tacos were very very poor quality, very small portions and extremely overpriced. Wings were good, but expensive for what came out. Drinks and service at the bar was good, atmosphere is good but would not recommend eating here as far better eats and service can be found in close proximity.

Great pub. Fantastic dining room. The Church is a splendid pub and dining room. It's got a traditional feel to it which I love, a great selection of beers and food and excellent service. They also have a fantastic roof terrace which is incredible on a hot day. I've visited the Church a few times and had great experiences but last night prompted me to finally write this review. My fiancé and I attended the 'steak night' and we had a brilliant time. We ordered a starter of Steak Tartare and Lomo. Mains, the Côte de boeuf with sides of truffle mac cheese, chips and creamed spinach. The steak tartare was incredible, we've spent quite a bit of time in France over the years and in all honesty, this steak tartare was arguably the best we've ever eaten. The steak was large and had great flavour, there was a smoky edge to it which was delicious and the truffle mac cheese was very good. (the tomatoes and shallot that came with the steak were to die for) It's worth mentioning that the service was phenomenal throughout the whole evening. The staff are exceptionally polite, very helpful when it came to suggestions with ordering and very attentive. I would definitely recommend the Church. 10/10

Was recommended to The Church by a member of staff from another JQ pub as I had booked the wrong date for Sunday lunch and they couldn’t accommodate. Great service as soon as we walked in, drinks served, menu chosen and plates of roast beef for him and lamb for me arrived. Extras of a parsnip gratin and greens accompanied the meat, lovely tasting carrot, roast potatoes and yorkie. What looked like a small jug of gravy was deceiving and covered the plate in a tasty sauce. Only criticism was that the Yorkshire puds were quite burnt on the top, fair play we were offered replacements but declined but all in all a really tasty roast in a great boozer with a nice atmosphere…will return!
