One of the IF NOT* The best fish and chips shop around! Service was great! Jim was able to accommodate a party of 15 people visiting the local town. A family friend was celebrating her birthday and Jim and the team did really well to manage us. We had a great time and we enjoyed the food! PLUS THEY HAVE UNLIMITED CHIPS! 😍 WOULD COME BACK AGAIN to Bourton on the water solely for this place! Thank you Jim and the team who served us on 12/11/24 3pm ish time. ❤️

Wouldn’t visit again, dead atmosphere, cost a fortune for not great food. Fish was tasteless and most chips were just batter and hard. Added their own gratuity of £3.99 and the service was rubbish! Would rather find a smaller local chip shop next time because this was awful.

Great food - especially the mushy peas. Veggy meals cooked in groundnut oil and rest cooked in beef dripping. Only things I’d change is then to cook asparagus in veggy oil and to batter the halloumi. Ask to sit in back unless you want to people watch at the front. Very brightly lit - could turn it down a bit in evening?

Easily the best chip shop from anywhere in the UK. The fact that they're already award winners is unsurprising. The food was exceptional. Not too greasy at all. Fish was very fresh and home made fish cake was lovely. Only negative was that we found the lady who served us our food on the takeaway to be a little abrupt to the point of coming across rude. Everything and everyone else was 5 stars all the way. Would not hesitate in recommending.

Rock hard chips cooked in dirty chip fat. AVOID!With regards to my review that i made FOUR MONTHS AGO, thank you for your swift response. I can see that your business receives mixed reviews regarding quality of your products and service. I would also like to point out that reviews received from your paying customers should be seen as an opportunity to improve or why would people want to spend their hard earned money within your establishment when they can go elsewhere? Also, it is not the customers responsibility to bring to the attention of the owner directly how they should have certain standards within their business, that is the job of the owner. I would suggest you seek business advice if maintaining standards is an issue for you rather than calling out paying disappointed customers. Good day

A lot of mixed reviews for this place! We paid £67 (including service) for 2 kids scampi, an Adult Scampi at £17.70 and 2 Adults shared a Cod for £16.50. (3 Teas were £8.70). This seems a lot of money but the food was fine and the place was light and clean. Perhaps any other meal in 'expensive' Bourton on the Water would be the same cost? Our fish was fine - a reasonable portion but not 'generous'. Nice batter. Not a lot of chips and yes they seemed dry -but we ate them all... Maybe decide where to eat before visiting?

After reading mixed reviews wasn't sure what to expect. Unfortunately the cod was overcooked/dried out. It should flake but it was hard and stuck to the batter and the beef dripping chips were ok but again overcooked or perhaps not fresh. Some of the group were vegetarians and these chips were so much nicer, I assume as they were freshly cooked. Overall disappointing and wouldn't bother going back.

Not quite an authentic experience of a traditional chippy. Tiny portion of tough & hard (refried?) chips in a wire basket, with smallish cod. The flavour of chips was good - (Thumbs Up for the beef dripping!) but texture was beyond disappointing, I nearly sent them back. Cod batter & fish itself was very good though. All in all, the price did not match the quality of the food, and wished we'd gone elsewhere really for the money.

Good food, good restaurant, isn't and doesn't need to be anything particularly special, the fish and chips is good, and surprisingly as well is the chicken burger though they do not specialize in those. The pricing is high though it is a touristy area so it makes sense. The amount of food given is nice, with the fish being quite big, though they could have added a bit more chips, nothing to worry about though, would go again if there.

When a business positions itself as a premium fish and chip shop - one vital feature that is a non-negotiable is the fish and chips. If you go expecting hearty portions of fish and chippy chips - then you may be disappointed. Or meat pies oozing with gravy whe you cut through the puffy or crispy pie crust - then you again, will be disappointed. Instead you get chips served in a small basket. And high meat content pies that are quite dry, with other flavours in the meat other than those you'd expect from a chippy. However if you're after a no-frills dining experience where the menu is inspired by a chippy, this may be the place for you. But be prepared to compromise on what you may be expecting, when in any other chippy you'd typically br served from behind the classic stainless steel counter, by a team in well-worn tabards! Chip Shed? Perhaps Chip Emporium may be better suited to the clientele they're trying to target.

Disappointing overpriced and expected much better. Most London fish and chip shops are far better. Seriously you don’t serve chips in a basket at a genuine fish and chip shop, just put a scoop on the side. Fish was small and scampi uninspiring. £38 for this does not justify the price. Interesting fish and chip shop with many kinds of fish to choose from. Sold separately with the fries. When ordering, you can ask for salt and vinegar, which will be put on the order. As for the tartare sauce, you have to order it separately for 60 cents. It comes in a beautiful box, looks delicious. Half a big fish with a thick batter, gradually crispy. The fish is very fresh, but the fries are not very crispy, they are in big pieces. The tartare sauce does not taste very good, it tastes more like eating cream.

We have been in this shop twice, latest being today! I ordered a cod & chips with curry sauce and halloumi fries, vegetable sausages and mushy peas for my wife. First time we had fish and chips twice the fish were ok but chips seemed to be made out of the left over potatoes from the previous day. Today's experience was absolutely shocking! fish and halloumi were not properly fried (not enough) and the peas were very dry. Worse of all, the chips were a lot worse than the previous time. they were like eating cardboard material mixed with very hard crisps and most of them were very dry! They were definitely made out of potatoes left from the previous day which have been soaking in water treated with dry white! over £20.00 worth of rubbish! If I may add, the fish also had no taste which had a peculiar smell and it is in my opinion that the fish is either "codling or whiting!" and not pure proper COD!

Today, on July 28, 2024, we were blessed with an uncharacteristically sunny day in England, with temperatures soaring above 20 degrees Celsius—yes, you heard that right, no rain! It felt like a taste of summer in this otherwise autumnal season. Seizing the opportunity, my friends and I decided to go on a small excursion to Bourton-on-the-Water. After a pleasant stroll and lounging by the river on a cozy blanket, hunger struck. Naturally, I opted for Fish and Chips, my go-to dish for gauging a restaurant's quality. We chose The Chip Shed for our culinary adventure. My lovely girlfriend graciously bought me this quintessential British meal, and now I’ll share my thoughts on the experience. Let’s start with the presentation. The food arrived in a neat, aesthetically pleasing box inside a paper bag—clean and visually appealing, giving off a vibe that something special awaited inside. However, as is the unfortunate norm with Fish and Chips in England, the chips were stuck to the bottom of the paper. It's baffling that after all these years, no one has figured out how to make a non-stick paper for this iconic dish. Perhaps waxed paper or some food-safe coating could solve this perennial problem. To all Fish and Chips vendors: if you're stumped, reach out to me. I'll sort you out with a non-stick solution to save every precious chip from becoming a casualty. Now, onto the taste. The chips were... alright. Not the crispiest I've had, but certainly not the worst. On a scale from 0 to 10, they scored a solid 6, maybe even a 7. They could definitely use some improvement, perhaps a double-frying method to ensure a creamy inside and a crispy exterior. As for the fish, the batter was a letdown—it wasn’t crispy and peeled away from the fish. The seasoning was lacking, but that’s a minor issue, easily fixed with a bit of extra salt. The fish itself was surprisingly juicy, which caught me off guard, considering Bourton-on-the-Water isn't coastal, so the fish likely wasn’t fresh. A tip for Fish and Chips sellers: consider using fresh fish instead of frozen. It might be challenging at first to gauge how much fresh fish to stock, but you can always use the fresh supply first and fall back on frozen if needed. The extra effort could make a significant difference in taste and customer satisfaction. In comparison to other places, such as "The Posh" in Evesham, where the fish resembled dried wood chips coated in some form of liquid and batter, The Chip Shed did a decent job. The day was enjoyable overall, with sporadic sunshine and warm weather making it a pleasant outing. So, if you ever find yourself in Bourton-on-the-Water and in need of a fish fix, The Chip Shed is worth a try. It’s not a coastal fish and chip experience, but it’s commendable for an inland attempt.

I was tired from touring the villages by car, so I decided to take advantage of this option. As with the Cotswolds itself, I felt a strong sense of Asian hatred that is unique to rural areas. In fact, I couldn't really understand the accent because it was so thick, but the clerk at the back was actually yelling abuse with a scary expression on his face. I was told it would take 7 minutes, but I ended up waiting 30 minutes. Friends of the young female clerk came to the store one after another and were given priority. I don't know if that's what it is, but they didn't provide sauces or disposable cutlery. Since it looks like a tourist, I thought it would have been nice to have at least some information about the sauce. I've been to the UK several times and have eaten in Scotland, Ireland, and other places, but this was the worst fish and chips I've ever had, with ridiculously thick batter. I couldn't eat it so I threw it in the trash and ate something I bought at CO-OP. The fish and chips I had at a restaurant in the same village were better. We recommend that you make a reservation. It was our last dinner in the village, and it was very disappointing. I really hope everyone in Asia doesn't waste a meal here.

She took care to check that she had taken our order down correctly & was very attentive to us throughout & was unfailingly polite. Our starters - prawn cocktail and the scampi were delicious and there was no scimping on portions either. The chicken and chips were cooked perfectly and were very tasty. I would heartily recommend that dish even though it didn't give me the option of recommending it in the menu below. We loved the place so much we stayed for dessert and coffee! Heartily recommend the sticky toffee pudding too. It was so light, not the stodgy standard which is the familiar fayre of most other restaurants. The meal ended a perfect evening drive and we shall be back. It's a wonderful place to eat & absolutely spotless into the bargain....and that is also the reason it sticks in my memory.

Did ask for 2 portions of fish, chips and curry sauce. We got 1 portion. The curry sauce was disgusting, the chips were all very bitty and the fish was dry. Batter was tasteless. Very disappointing

Really disappointing chips. Tasted like reheats from the night before. 4 of us ordered and all of us felt let down. Would not return.

Nice chippy! Sat in the restaurant part. The portions were about right too as some give loads of chips but you had a smallish basket here which was good to see. No complaints with any of the food at all.

We turned up literally two minutes before closing, a family of four tired and hungry. We were greeted by the owner who was so kind and welcoming, he freshly cooked our meals that were delicious. We ordered Cod and Chips they were the best Fish and Chips we've had in years ( possibly ever), the Girls had a Chicken burger and chips they said they were lovely too 😋

The wait was definitely worth it. Honestly the best fish I’ve had in the UK. Lovely fresh fish, perfectly cooked and a light batter. Absolutely incredible - five stars from the whole family! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

My wife thinks the best fish and chips she's ever had and a fussy 5yo demolished the cod fingers - it's certainly up there with the best chip shops in the UK.
