The Chip Inn in South Norfolk

We were travelling through the area and stopped saw lots of people sat outside eatibg at picnic tables ( which is unusual for a takeaway, there was also good car parking available. The chops were probably the nicest chip shop chips I have ever had. Wish we lived nearer so we could visit again.

Never seemed to be open, every time I passed it said closed Never got to try there fish and chips, disappointed as was a local for our holiday cottage nearby

Nice Chips and Sausage. Real Sausage so that's a bonus. Only reason a gave a score of 3/5. Extortionate prices! Over £8 for two regular portions of Chips (I'd hate to see the size of a small portion if this was a regular!) and one Sausage.....where's the justification for that? Just a rip off as far as I'm concerned. The same dish at my local Chippy in Norwich is around £5 for exactly the same. Seems like a captive audience are being taken advantage of and judging by some of the reviews, don't even realise....or care. The young lady who took my order was lovely and polite but the lad who wrapped it all up, along with my friends orders, was slow and lacked social skills.....at least a smile would've been nice. Sorry to rant but felt I needed to leave an honest review to help the owner make improvements......or at least lower their prices.

Top notch chippy - one of the best in Norfolk with a wonderful restaurant area. Lemon sole is to die for. Beware - massive portions of chips.

This used to be an amazing chippy bit times have changed and it seems like they don’t really care about their product any more. Our fish was hugely over cooked, dry and claggy which should have been immediately evident to a cook by the colour and texture of the batter. Thoroughly disappointing. Dog ate my fish as I couldn’t stomach it. Chips ok but not great. Time to look at some great fish shops and reevaluate your product and delivery!

Been getting our fish and chips from the Chip Inn for last couple of years. Used to drive past it when coming to Norwich and used to see the queues outside. Now I know why. Simply the best fish and chips. Just the right amount of batter which isn’t greasy and the fish is always excellent. Had cod, haddock, Skate and plaice - all great

Went with my family and can’t see what all the negatives are, we used to go regularly when we lived nearby. Jamie who always used to be the chef was still running the shop, even though it had changed hands he was still making sure his level of quality was achieved. Surely people can understand that sometimes the raw product that they buy may not be the same quality all the time and it’s impossible to taste every chip or piece of fish that gets served, I would think that if you bought your complaints up at the time then Jamie and his team would be able to change/sort these for you straight away. Well done Jamie and your team keep serving fantastic fish and chips.

I will firstly say i have over the years very occasionally i have had some of the best chips here but its never ever consistent and todays visit was the last straw i will never use them again i walking in as they opened the door when they opened at 4.30 so you would think they would have some things ready but no, i had to wait while they i later learnt microwaved every last bit of life the pie ever had in it until it was just a congealed mess so i returned that for a refund (£4) from the young girl behind the counter who desperately needs to go on a course to learn how to smile The chips and battered sausage didn't look appealing at all the chips looked dirty and some of them were so over done it was ridiculous As a non expert i would guess the chips and sausage were cooked in the same dirty oil I ate 6 or 8 chips, 2 bites of sausage then it all went in the bin Looking here today and i'm surprised at just how many negative comments they been getting but judging on my experience its doesn't surprise me

Well over cooked dry burnt fish , with no taste, and the chips were reheated, used to be nice but terrible now. Would not waist my money again

Have used this as a restaurant many years but since it changed hands have not been to eat there as restaurant is now an open area. Just had food to takeaway. Who ever is frying has no idea how to do the job. The skate was not just double fried but double battered so much that the fish, minimal, was stuck to the batter. There were barely two mouthfuls of fish. The peas were tasteless. Thank goodness we cook our own chips. If we’d lived nearer we would have taken it back. This has happened to us twice but we thought we’d give them another try. Won’t be going there again. A total waste of money.

Having been here many times and had some lovely meals we visited the other night and were sorely disappointed. The seating area area next to the chippy is very canteen like and cold as the doors are wide open, consequently our food went cold quickly. The quality of the food has dropped ,the portions reduced, the fish was just about edible, the chips were below average, the pie was indescribably bad with little filling and soggy pastry even on the top! The pie was served in its foil dish and the mushy peas came in a polystyrene container and were completely tastless. Do not expect to get your food as shown in the photos, the reality is much worse. Even in the takeaway area polystyrene containers were used- why? Where are their green credentials? What is wrong with paper? And, no, we will not be returning.

Had cod and chips twice tonight. £18 so not a cheap meal. Batter was overcooked and fish was dry and not as fresh as before when I have been. Chips good tho.

With our present economy. The way the news are reporting the hardships that Fish & Chip shops are going through at present, I’m pleased that they seem to be keeping there head above water. I admit I’m not a regular user as I only get a something on my drive home every few weeks but last Friday ( 20:00) the Fish /Chips I got was excellent. A little more expensive than the last time here but if reports of 100% increase in the wholesale price of fish, they appear to holding down price to survive

Stopped by on our way home and ordered fish and chips followed by ice cream - delicious food and friendly staff 👍🏻

We have had fish and chips here for years lovely the best around, what’s gone wrong raw chips funny tasting batter it looked like it had been cooked in old oil, the fish itself smelt very fishy and looked greys disappointing and this is not the first time we have had a bad experience it’s been going down hill for a while. We won’t be using it again better off buying a pack of fish fingers.

Last year I gave this place a deserved report always been the best chippy for miles today 10 June 2022 at lunch time what a difference,( different owner?) the chips here were the best ever before. Today Sausages AWFUL chips almost raw ,what has happened?

This chippy was the best in Norfolk now it’s just shut at ridiculous times likes 8.30 on a Friday night we went to the pub and thought lovely fish and chips but no and they aren’t as good anymore since they’ve had a make over. Long John hill are soooo much better cheaper and nicer

We often go to this takeaway to get a meal, but todays was a big disappointment. The chips were horrible, dry and crispy. They had clearly been sitting out for a few hours. Not happy.

Called in on our way home from Norwich, Car park at the rear of the shop, and really good fish and chips, totally recommend the homemade fish cake. Going to return quickly.

I was passing through Long Stratton with a mate on the way to Norwich and we decided to have a break for a bite when we saw the Chip Inn. I have passed many times and seen lengthy queues which is always a good sign....

We had large cod and chips as recommended by friends and being the best locally. We weren’t disappointed as it was fresh and the chips were cooked to perfection. Nothing too greasy as with other chip shops. No wonder it is nominated as the best...

I fully understand the times we are all going through at present but there is definitely no need for such rudeness. I rang an order through and asked politely where to collect it from, to be shouted out. I was told to join the queue...

I am very aware of the situation we are all living in at the moment,and indeed the pressure key workers are under but after the experience we received for this shop don't think we will be visiting again.After nearly getting our head bitten of for asking for two tail cod.Just very very rude staff who virtually through it at us when served.And the best thing was it wasn't very enjoyable either.Not a patch on the previous owners sadly.

I have used the chip inn on many occasions and have never had a bad experience the quality of the fish has always been excellent and never greasy. So difficult to accept those that leave any negative comments.Particularly those cowards that comment after they have left We were sceptical of the quality being maintained when the Chip Inn came under new management but pleased to comment that the high quality has been maintained

Great cod and chips. No wonder it is so busy. The turnover of the food ensures it is freshly cooked.

We are so very lucky to have this fish and chip shop near us. Everytime we have fish and chips from here they are so well cooked. Fresh fish, crunchy batter and yummy chips. Well recommended!

Iv been going to this place for a long time I even drive as it’s not local this was the best fish & chips around for me but since the new owners have taken over the chips are not as good the same with the batter and also the fish such a pity

Wife was going out and fancied fish and chips so off to the best local chippie. Parking is available a few paces away. Ordered the cod roe (freshly cooked to order), a piece of cod and chips. All freshly cooked. Didn't ( but could have) eaten in the on site restaurant and took the food home. Delicious and substantial just like it should be! It's obviously not trying to be cordon bleu but it's very good at what it does.

Just on top of the beach, with great view from restaurant, terrace and some rooms. Very simple but nice sea decoration in all rooms and comum areas. Cuisine that won´t disappoint you, and very friendly staff. Can recommend to my friends.

Various family members before me have over many years eaten at The Chip Inn and made positive comment so when opportunity presented I was ready to enjoy "the best fish and chips for miles". My own family members told that.Opportunity presented so I reserved a table in the restaurant and was on my way.Customer car parking behind the shop was a good start, very convenient.I arrived and was shown to my table.The tables top surface area was I thought a little small, as were the chairs. I had a table for four yet considered a proper struggle for space if three others were with me. Comfortable, barely. Basic, definitely. Cheap, seemingly. Having said that, the tables, chairs and floors were all very clean. I was attended by a very pleasant waitress quite quickly. Orders placed without fuss, all good.I ordered cod chips and mushy peas.When the meal arrived there were enough chips although BY MY OWN EXPECTATIONS were cut a little too thin but tasty all the same. The mushy peas were…..mushy peas. The cod batter was a quite dark in colour however crunchy and the cod inside was good with fresh white flakes breaking away from the portion.Overall the meal was satisfactory if a little on the pricey side. I paid £11.00 for my portion however I would have happily of paid £9:00 for it.In summary.In terms of food, really quite good.In terms of comfort, I think a lot more can be done.I live the other side of the UK and it's unlikely I'll be back in the area any time soon, if at all and if I were then I would go out of my way to visit The Chip Inn, no. But then if I were passing and if I were hungry would I stop at The Chip Inn, yes.

Great fish and chips. A bit on the pricey side but you always get good quality fish. Their curry sauce is gorgeous and the girls who work there are always friendly.

Absolutely fantastic Fish And chips, great and fast service, good price and delicious. We had cod and chips but I suspect everything else the do would be equally as good. Highly recommend this place. Will definitely be going again.

Recommended by the owner of our cottage. Visited on a busy Saturday tea time. Had to queue which was a good sign. The young lady at the counter was very efficient and friendly, short drive back, food still hot. Given to me in a paper bag, which I was impressed with.Went for good old fish and chips with mushy peas, don’t do gravy! Which was a disappointment! Food was really ,really good washed down with a glass of Aspalls !

We don't visit here on a regular basics, well probably a bit too regularly for the waist line. Most of the time the fish and chips are spot on but just occasionally the chips can be a little stale and the fish can be a little greasy. Overall I would recommend the Fish and Chips as the best in a ten mile radius.

Visited whilst on holiday in Long Stratton. We got our fish & chips to take out and they are the best we have tasted. Such a shame we live too far away!!

Have not been here for ages and ages and in my quest for the perfect fish and chip shop decided to find out it was just as good and it was as I remembered. I did sit in as knew I would attack the wrapping as I was driving and wanted to really savour them. Mushy peas were also delicious.

If there is a better fish and chip shop than this I would be surprised . Apart from the obvious fish and chips the home made fish cakes are lovely . There is usually a wait but is is well worth it.

Fantastic award winning family run take away or eat in fish and chip shop. Recently refurbished to the highest standards. The queues on weekends speak volumes, but well worth the wait. Car park and outside eating available albeit on the busy main road through the small town

A quick visit just coming through this small town. I have been a few times while passing through and have been pleasantly surprised each time! Always busy, I’ve seen people lining out the door before.

regular cod £4.50 and chips £1.70... loads of chips but the cod was so small, never seen a piece of fish that small ever battered.. my friend just had chips and curry sauce, was driving away when we thought that was expensive £11.75.... turned round returned and was overcharged almost £4.. not a great visit :(

My husband and I usually have takeaway fish and chips but decided to sit in the restraunt. The staff are fantastic and the food great We plumped for the haddock and it was delicious cooked to perfection. I also had the spotted dick and custard. Prices very reasonable. Will certainly visit again.

Previous to the last year or so, the chip inn was the best fish and chips around, however now I can’t even bring myself to eat the chips, dry and a reheated taste. I think I speak on behalf of the majority of long Stratton in saying go back to how it always used to be! Proper craving fish and chips but refuse to go anywhere else, 5 stars purely for the staff.

Always busy when past on numerous occasions, Today stopped and tried it out and glad I did. Great service from the friendly staff in the restaurant and best fish n chips I’ve had in ages. Cooked to order fresh, and fast service. Sadly not close enough to home to become a regular chippy but will deffo be calling again when passing.

There is always a queue at the takeaway , which just shows how popular/good they are. There is plewnty of staff on so tou don't wait long ! great tasting food yum!!

This chippy is in two parts. A take away counter and a restaurant.

Nothing here is vegetarian as everything is fried in beef dripping. Very disappointing. This includes the veggie burger and the chips.

Everything is lovely from here, Cod, Scampi, Fish Cakes, Sausages and of course the chips. The queue out the door says it all. You can eat in or take away and their curry sauce and mushy peas are both FAB too. Just wish they did Onion Rings !! Staff are super nice and friendly, everywhere bright and clean.

Meals excellent. But now restaurant,has changed due to wall being REMOVED now. Shop customers can look in restaurant, whilst you are trying to eat. Will be very COLD in winter.

We’re eaten at several of the east of England fish and chip restaurant award winners, the chip inn is better. Crispy batter, fresh fish, home made tartare sauce. What more could you ask for.

Took mum here for a meal the waitress was polite and very helpfull , mum had fish and chips I had pie and chips lovely and hot but there was just to much to eat but we did have Apple pie and custard and a cup of coffee , if you have a big appetite this is the place to go. Excellent meal been coming here for years and still the same owners .

On a recent golfing trip to Dunston Hall we ventured out for an evening meal of fish and chips at The Chip Inn, Long Stratton. What a great decision. You can choose to eat your fish and chips Al Fresco and watch the world roll by or sit inside the restaurant. We choose the latter. The waitress service is warm and friendly and the cod and chips were to die for. If you are on the way to Norwich via the A140, The Chip Inn at Long Stratton is a must stop. Have eaten at this restaurant on several occasions and never been disappointed.

We have been regular visitors to the restaurant and the take-away. I believe they are under new ownership, the quality of the fish has most certainly diminished. I was served a piece of what I took to be cod, it was grey in colour and in my opinion was also poorly cooked. Until I hear better reports I will not be going back.

Love the recent changes to this restaurant. It looks so much better with everything open plan The staff are fantastic as always. Most importantly, the best fish and chips for miles!

Had fish and chips from here used to be great but portions under old management were tiny. Portions better but the fish looked like Birdseye fish and was disgusting. Fish was thin and meatless also wasn't white as you'd expect fresh fish to be.

We stopped here for dinner on our way home, and although not having booked a table they were able to accommodate us.

What a bit of luck, the back road was closed for roadworks and I got diverted. Lovely, friendly staff and some of the best fish and chips ever, homemade Tartar sauce to die for, highly recommend stopping here, it’s a takeaway chippy or you can , as I did, eat in their cracking little restaurant.

Having been a regular customer of the Chip Inn restaurant, my husband and I called in tonight having booked a table earlier, to find that the wall between the actual shop and restaurant had been removed. In our opinion it has ruined the privacy of a very popular restaurant. Now, it feels like you are eating your meal, for which you have paid extra for the privilege of "eating in", in nothing more than a goldfish bowl! Big mistake!!

First first chippy great food been many times when working in the area, staff friendly and polite reasonably priced menu. Well worth a visit..

I always enjoy the offerings and keep returning to try and catch them out. The food is always consistently good. I have cod or haddock usually and it is always cooked to perfection and I have never had bad chips either. The level of customer service is high and I look forward to meeting Carol, the new staff member, and finding out what I actually get for my fiver.

Regularly have take away from here. My daughter loves Jamie’s homemade fish cakes. Fish is always white, flaky and tasty and chips are always excellent

We eat here regularly after moving to the area. There are so few eat in chip shops these days and so this is a gem. It is always top class & has excellent service & reasonable prices but can get busy at peak times, so booking on busy days may be best. Love the standard fish but fish cakes are very good for a chip shop & very generous, as are all the portions.

A very popular, and justifiably so, fish and chip restaurant with comfortable seating area and take away options. Very friendly staff and delicious food - possibly the best fish and chips we've ever had. Food is served hot without too long a wait. Proper chunky chips and tasty ungreasy batter. Licensed premises with bottle beers and popular wines available. Worth booking ahead to get a table particularly at busier times. Just wish it wasn't over an hour away from home!

I’m a regular customer. The Chip Inn is an excellent fish and chip shop and the best in an area stretching from Diss - Harleston - Norwich. It’s worth a drive to get there. Both takeaway and restaurant are excellent. Clean restaurant and shop, smiley staff - often there’s a bit of banter between staff and customers in the takeaway -good range of fish and other products. And all at reasonable prices for what you get. Only two minor gripes; they don’t sell savaloys and the queues can be a bit long sometimes... which reflects how good local people think the food is!!

Moved from London and hoped there was going to be a local fish and chip shop and found this one. We now have our weekly Friday fish super.

Great place for great food, variety is good and staff friendly and efficient. Great for take away or eating in the restaurant next door. We sat outside on the picnic benches and watched the world go by. Great prices and great food. A must for locals or stop off on your way through.

The best fish and chips there is. Always a queue but the girls serve very fast and the lads cook non stop. Wonderful food and wonderful service every time

Met some friends for lunch here today and we all enjoyed delicious fish and chips. Made a lovely change from the festive fare we've been having recently and will have more of in coming days! Attentive and friendly staff and good value. We will be back!

We often call in for lunch at the Chip Inn.Their food is always top notch. Try the sausages- excellent. Just wished we had such a good one in Diss!! I tend to order Haddock as always cooked to order. Also great crispies!

Mushy chips, greasy batter.. wouldn't recommend. We were staying near by and this place was recommended... We were really looking forward to a chippy tea. We didn't finish it as it was to greasy ..

The long queues that form outside (great when it's raining!) here maybe an indication of how popular the Chip Inn is. Alternatively, it could be that service is slow and it's the only chippy in miles - there is another round the corner but it's changed hands so many times and the quality so unreliable that it's hardly competition!

This fish and chip shop also has a restaurant attached. A great way to have your food really fresh and tasty.

We often visit here with my Mum and Pop to save my Mum from cooking I think and I'm glad when she says she's booked a table at the "Chip Inn" because they do delicious fish and chips.

Cosey but excellent service and fantastic food. You will need to book a table as this place is constantly busy. It is one of the best Fish and Chip Shops in Norfolk.

The home made fish cake is fab, if you want to posh it up book a table in their restaurant. Afterwards (or before) head up to the newly refurbished Queens Head for a nice pint.

Not much to say but it's the best fish & chip shop for miles. The fish always tastes fresh and the chips are to die for. Staff always cheerful and ready for a chat. Can't fault it.

We used to come here every week until we moved, so we thought we would pop in on our way to norwich, I wish we hadn't. The whole experience was awful. The service was slow, and the ladies where extremely rude. The food then came, and the chips where horrible, the sausage was so greasy, I didn't eat it. I am very so disappointed. I have visited this establishment quite a few times now as it's near my workplace and I follow the queues. This is a traditional fish and chip take away with restaurant combined. I have never tried eating in but I imagine judging by the looks on the faces of retiring diners, it is a pleasant experience. So, only 4 out of 5 on the ratings for the following reasons.There is an issue which I am unable to reconcile to do with logistics. Firstly, there are two entrances to the take away. This causes confusion to passing trade and first timers as it becomes difficult to work out how the queue works. This has caused me personal embarrassment on being accused of queue jumping just by walking in and responding to the server's request for my order. According to the signage, some fish types are available to order and it appears one is supposed to order on arrival and rejoin the queue until your number is called. This would appear to be fine if it wasn't for the customers. Also there is sometimes large cod cooked and available but it isn't on the special order board so if you take your chances in the queue and order it when it's your turn then you are asked to wait as it needs to be cooked. Anyway, back to the customers. They are a rebellious bunch at times and "regulars" rarely seem to rejoin the queue as per the notice but mill around the cold drink machine in the opposite corner. Now I know this is a fish shop but there is a tendency for customers during busy times to create a three deep snake like sardines rather than queueing outside on the perfectly safe forecourt. One gets cajoled into joining the queue inside regardless of how crushed that may make you. That is clearly the price you pay for this most popular haunt. As far as prices go, spot on offering excellent value. So, what about the food? Always perfectly cooked, always delicious.

As a regular visitor to the Chip Inn, I would like to say that the fish is always delicious and extremely fresh. I have mushy peas - hot and tasty, - and we share a small portion of chips because the fish portion, (even the standard one) is very generous. it is warm and friendly. Although we do find the new tables rather high for the chairs. Worth making the effort to book.

I have used the take away and restaurant on occasions over the past 36 yrs, and never had a problem. Always good, that's why there is often large queues outside. Worth the wait...
