I took my mum for Afternoon Tea to the Chichester Hotel. When we arrived the table was laid out lovely with white and pink linen and rose petals scattered on the table. The food was plentiful and delicious, they happily changed a filling on one of the sandwiches, there was a large selection of miniature cakes as well as scones and strawberries.

Not very awe-inspiring. The choice of sandwiches etc weren't a good reflection on the venue. With a little more thought the selection could have been so much better. Frankly one would expect something really good for the price!

Went here on an offer with my daughter and two teenage grand daughters. Lovely Country setting in an old converted barn. Clean, and set out well in keeping with the period eliminate. The food was plentiful a good assortment of sandwiches, nice dainty cakes and of course scones jam and clotted cream. A very good selection of teas bought to the table along with a teapot full of hot water, milk and sugar. Liked the idea of all the different teas and my grand daughter tried 2 or 3. The waiter was extremely attentive and keep asking if we needed anything else. Overall an excellent afternoon out, will definitely book again. Well done to the Management and staff!

We booked an afternoon tea here for a colleagues retirement. I have to say other than the company of the 40 people who attended it was awful. Where do I start. The sandwich selection was terrible. Not only was the bread hard from being made far too long in advance the fillings were boring and unimaginative. Egg mayonnaise, cheese and pickle and ham and the strongest wholegrain mustard which was most unpleasant. The cake selection was even worse! Inch long frozen selection from Macro! Scones were clearly from the same place and the jam to go with them resembled jelly with no taste. Come on Chichester I know the £17.50 price was reasonable but we would have gladly paid more for better quality. The only reason we booked here in the first place was because it was the only place that would cater locally for that amount of people. Save your money and go elsewhere.

My husband and I were given an afternoon tea voucher as a 10th wedding anniversary gift. We booked in online and advised the venue of the special event and that my husband is vegetarian. When presented with the afternoon tea it was immediately noted that the entire sandwich selection was vegetarian. When I commented that I was not vegetarian there was no attempt at asking the kitchen to provide at least a ham sandwich. The vegetarian selection was: runny egg mayo; cucumber; cheese and pickle; unknown (not sure if a jelly spread of some kind, but not pleasant). The selection of sweet things all looked suspiciously like they came straight from a packet. The one item that looked home made (choc mousse in a shot glass) was abruptly abandoned when a hair was found. After one coffee refill the staff did not return to ask if all was ok and we actually left without anyone noticing. No follow up has been made as to why we left nearly all the afternoon uneaten. A real shame and certainly not celebratory! For the advertised £16.50 per person this was a real let down - not only were the sandwiches very boring but the quality overall was just not there. As it was a gift we couldn't ask for our money back but I feel very disappointed!

Like many other reviewers have commented this place was virtually empty. There was a mix-up with our Groupon booking and they clearly weren't expecting us when we arrived. After about a 10 minute wait we were finally seated. Good assortment of sandwiches and cakes plus a small quiche which was nice. Couple of negatives were there was no clotted cream to go with the scones, just some whipped cream plus we had to keep asking for both refills of the tea plus our glass of prosecco only arrived after we had asked for it at least twice. Not sure I would return. It is such a shame as the food quality and atmosphere in here used to be great.

I was treated to afternoon tea by my friend, such a lovely surprise, oh and two glasses of Prosecco as she was also the designated driver so I was thoroughly spoilt. We came early at 12 o clock , the restaurant was empty but not a problem as we had the waiting staff all to ourselves .our cream tea was lovely and fresh with a nice selection of sandwiches and miniature cakes , there was also a dinky cream and compote creation and scones with cream and jam . Unlimited tea and coffee . All in all a lovely experience

We went for afternoon tea and were really looking forward to it. As soon as we got there we were sent to the restaurant instead of where the afternoon tea was held. When we asked why we were told we were an overspill from tea room. The service was terrible with us waiting for milk and us having to ask for it., also we wanted a de-caffinated coffee and had to ask several times. It seemed there were not enough staff. Then when sandwiches and cakes came up the egg and mayo and tuna sandwiches were warm, Also fresh cream had turned and was off.....it seemed the stand had been sitting in a warm environment for whatever length of time. We complained to the General Manager(who refused to give his name) and were told that we would have to take the matter up with Groupon as we had booked it through them. He was rather defensive and not willing to help in any way. Very unprofessional! We are intending to take this further as they should not be serving food which could possibly make someone ill! Avoid this place is my advice.

we used to go to the Chichester many years ago. in our families opinion it was the best restaurant in wickford. But some reason it went down hill, food, and the service just wasent the same high quality it had been. So many people stopped going. For my mums 90 th birthday she wanted to go back with the family and relive the the many good memorys we had of the place. We didn't want to go, but when I went there to book a table for 15, Ali, who I think she must be the manager was great. She sorted everything. Good wholesome food, good service and a good time was had by all. And I have a happy mum. One down side, the drinks prices are very expensive and very little choice in beers, but we will be back. That was sunday lunch by the way.

After staying with you Saturday in room 211 we would not recommend you, the room had water stains on all walls from the ceiling, i have pictures but l can not attach them but please send me an email address and we would be happy to forward to you. The pillows where so flat we tried to double them and still wasn’t the size of a normal pillow. We then had a hen party that at 12.15 we had to call down and ask for the music to be turned down as the party was so loud the party felt like it was under our room . To which l was told on booking my room l should have been informed about the hen party (which we wasnt) . To then have the wrong tv controller. Then in the morning we went down to breakfast, there wasnt enought table and chairs, people were eatting on the sofa in the hallway. The food was coming out slowy so when ever something was brought out there was a rush for the food leaving nothing left for others, we waiting a while for the breakfast .

As the Chichester Hotel is a decent walk from any nearby facilities they have a captive audience and the quality of the food and the flat atmosphere show. At the risk of sounding snobby the place is a bit of a contractor fest (I can say it because I am one!). The menu is fairly unimaginative and would have been acceptable in the 1980's. My major disappointment was the quiche/ tart which was tasteless and served cold with loads of cold potato salad and cold couscous. I needed a cuppa just to warm myself up afterwards.

My sister and brother in law stayed the weekend at Chichester and my daughter, granddaughter and I were asked to join them for Sunday lunch so table booked - starters served an hour after ordered - three pea soups ( one adult and child no starter) - soup Luke warm (after waiting an hour - inexcusable) - we waited a further 20 mins for main course - my granddaughter had now waited almost one and a half hours for her burger ( she was beautifully behaved and never left her chair but was really hungry ,fed up and wanted to go home for a sandwich)Our main course finally arrived - served by a very grumpy waitress - meat tough, roast potatoes disgusting (reheated previous day) - Yorkshire a joke (bought in frozen - definitely not cooked fresh on the premises) - the vegetables were very nice but only small spoonful on each plateMy granddaughter had a desert which she seemed to enjoy but the miserable waitress got all our coffees mixed up and wrong - we left in total despair - my hosts had travelled nearly 100 miles to join us and I think the Chichester gave appalling service - as a guest could not complain at the time but I will certainly not be returning or recommending to anyone - I think we are all owed an apology

I went to the Chichester last night for our works Christmas meal and was extremely disappointed, at £35 per head I did at least expect hot food! It was, however, a terrible meal. The starter 'chicken and avocado tian' was a very small swirl of avocado mush (no sign of any chicken) served with some very very limp salad leaved which were fit for the bin.My main course 'Steak and Christmas ale pie with mustard mash' (which, incidentally had to be pre-ordered weeks in advance) failed to materialise. I along with several of my colleagues were left sitting with nothing to eat whilst everyone else was tucking into their meals. When we managed to ask one of the many young and inexperienced waiting staff where our meals were, they simply replied "we've run out of steak pies". So does that mean we're not getting a main course? We were then asked to choose something else off the menu, by this time most of our colleagues had finished their meals and when our meals arrived the vegetables, which had been served well before the main meals, were cold. My turkey meal arrived on a cold plate and the meal was like warm, I left most of it. The desserts were plentiful and everyone managed to get what they had ordered. Everything was cleared away very swiftly and about half a dozen very small mince pies were left on small tea plate further along the table, so that you could help yourselves. A table was set up with tea and coffee and we told we had to go and queue up 'school dinner style' to get a cup of tea! £35 per head, hmmmm would have expected tea and coffee at the table, it wasn't a buffet! Now moving onto the drinks, as in all establishments such as this the drinks were horrendously expensive and we had our suspicions that the drinks had been watered down, they just didn't taste right. As for the DJ, it looked promising, he came around asking for requests. Sadly though, the set would have been more suitable at a children's party! We danced and made the most of our evening but vowed we would never go back to the Chichester again, it was appalling! Finally, if you are booked to go, make sure you take something warm to wear when you go to the toilets, it wasn't that cold last night, but it was like the Baltic in their loos. Strange thing was though, they had huge electric heaters facing the dance floor, I suppose that's to make you so hot you go to buy a drink! Really cannot see this place staying open for much longer.

We have visited the Chichester several times over the years but the service and food seems to have gone downhill. The portions were small and the food was only average. The staff are really young and seem to have had no training. They are obsessed with tidying up and clearing away the party poppers, streamers and balloons that they provided! The range of drinks is poor and the white and rose wines are disgusting. Tea & coffee is no longer served at your table and you have to queue up like you're in a cafe. At £40 a head I would expect better service and food. Unfortunately we won't be going back.

A large group of us annually attend a sunday lunch in December. Previously we have liked this venue because they could cater for large parties, we could choose our food on the day and it provided silver service. We were aware that it had changed hands as this year we had to choose our menu in advance. On the day one person did not get their chosen main course - Salmon, and it would seem they didn't have any Salmon in the kitchen as no-one had ordered it, so they had to choose something else. Another person didn't get their meal until everyone else had eaten theirs' so presumably it hadn't been cooked when the rest of the meals were ready.Other disappointments were:- only one type of wine was served across two bars and it was cheap plonk at high prices;- no bread rolls - even though side plates, knives and butter were on the table;- bread roll provided with the soup was a part-baked roll that had come out of the freezer not the oven;- no stuffing with the Turkey and a very small pig without a blanket;- two very small roast potatoes;- not enough vegetables so meal looked very sparse on the plate;- no cream or sherry in the Sherry trifle - in fact no cream with any of the desserts;- service took too long (almost 3 hours) which meant I wasn't able to stay long enough the get a coffee.Overall, the food we got wasn't bad it's just that it didn't merit the price we paid for it and mostly we didn't feel full up after three courses. Our group of 35 was one of only two parties to eat on this day - in the past the Stable Barn has been full - it must seat at least 100.The décor was much improved, but the character had been lost and either this or the poor service has driven people away. I doubt our group will visit again.

Having visited this venue before for a Sunday carvery I decided to visit again for a family Sunday lunch , the web site advertised a Sunday carvery with a set price. On phoning in I was put through to the hotel reception and was told the web site was wrong and the carvery was not done anymore and it was an a la carte menu with prices for each item. Today we attend for our lunch, I had to change my chair as it had wobbly legs and was dangerous. The food was barely warm, the soup was not hot, which was taken off out bill when we complained, the roast dinner has a mixture of under and over cooked vegetables that were not hot , the roast potatoes were just about warm. This venue has certainly gone down hill since my last visit from quality and quantity of food and the service delivery from the staff. This will be my last visit to this venue, there are lots of other venues that offer far better service and food. It is a great shame as the Sunday carvery at this venue did have an excellent reputation.

I gather that since we came last October the Chichester has changed hands and Boy what a difference! The service was manic, the food was mostly dreadful. Starters so small the chef must have been embarrassed to send them out, Mains not much better-steak like curled up shoe leather lamb shanks with half the meat missing and cold desserts which were supposed to be hot, then while dancing management allowed our table to be taken over by people unrelated to our function and a confrontation ensued when we tried to retake our seats. Hoping to have a lovely family birthday meal but was quite disappointed. The Chichister use to have a lovely carvary on a Sunday but now it's a Sunday roast brought to your table, which would have been fine if we didn't have to wait for our meals for such a long time and when we did receive them the roast potatoes were hard and rubbery, Yorkshire puds all soft and not crispy and worst of all the lamb that most of us had was tough and chewy. The only saving grace was that they didn't charge us for the lamb.

Breakfast - buffet - well presented. You can either have a full English or continental. The cooked food was hot and dishes were kept full. If you have a dietary requirement the staff will always help out if at all possible if you give notice.Sunday lunch was taken from the menu. Again good variety a, well presented and hot.

I have recently visited the Chichester Restaurant and was part of a group of 45. The purpose of our visit was to celebrate the anniversary of our club, unfortunately the only thing we celebrated was leaving the awful sham that is the Chichester. As a club we are regular customers but we will not be returning! Where to start! Prawn cocktail served in a soup bowl with non-existent sauce! The main course was horrendous, I had the beef, it was vile! Like shoe leather, it was so tough you could not cut it let alone chew it!. It was terrible to see many plates of uneaten beef returning to the kitchen. What a waste of food and a waste of people's money. Not only was the meat awful but the meal was dry as they did not provide additional gravy with the meal, surely this is a simple, standard addition to any roast dinner! The desert was a non- event, a bland cheese cake. Coffee- well I think it had been stewing in the pot since the night before . The service is poor and the staff are drab and lack enthusiasm. When we looked for someone to relay our dissatisfaction to, staff were no where to be seen. I will definitely not be returning and I am sure many of my friends feel the same.

Revisited "the Chichester" recently. Change of Ownership/Management and boy does it show. Was with friends and ex colleagues and though my meal was pretty good everybody was complaining about lack of service and quality of food One friend sent her chicken back as it wasn't cooked properly. The final straw was that in a party of 60 people lots ordered Strudel. My wife's came up as a piece around one inch wide. Then it was explained that they didn't have enough to go round so brought plates of ice cream round to compensate.Normally we finish around 3pm but was still waiting for coffee at 3.30. On top of this they wanted £100 just to open the bar for our organisation. The feeling was they didn't want us there in first place and they have succeeded. Doubt if we will be back

A friend had booked this restaurant for a birthday party weeks in advance and paid in the deposit, only to be called a few days before the surprise birthday to be informed that we have to move the booking. So the surprise was ruined. Food orders took an age to be sorted, and finally when our order was taken it took another 30 minutes for the starters to arrive.I ordered the chicken liver parfait, missing the ciabatta and told it would come out soon, which took another 15 minutes. Starters had the appearance of a cold and miserable mess, mains was a bit of an improvement, however their cheesecake is absolutely fantastic. The disco afterwards was fine, decent music, what more can you ask for!Overall this is a nice venue with *some* nice polite waiting staff, but it seems the establishment has a lack of decent organisation, which inherently annoy the customer. I wouldn't come back and pay £29, unless they improved the overall service.

Had a 40th Birthday meal booked for 14 people. Had fully paid for the meal over a month before the date of the booking and was phoned up a day before to say that they were cancelling because they didnt have enough other bookings. In other words they couldn't be bothered. Not only were they not apologetic one little bit, they were refusing to give us our money back as they said we had to pick an alternative date. SHOCKING customer service.

We came here in October 2015. We came to celebrate my nan's last birthday, she thankfully had a lovely time. The food was amazing, we had a horrible waitress serving us who preceded to come to the table just shouting out what we'd ordered 'chicken!' not anything along the lines of 'who's ordered the chicken?' just a bellow of the order. Some of the waitresses were lovely and did a great job. But this one sadly disappointed me, as I'm a banqueting supervisor I tend to notice these things. I did email this hotel not long after in October but did not receive ANY reply any acknowledgement to my frustration. I'm not looking for any compensation I just wanted to make sure this didn't happen to another customer. I also emailed them in a way of not having to write this poor review on TripAdvisor so as not to tarnish their business but to help rectify problems. However through no reply I've decided to write it now. Just because my review is very late after the event does not make it invalid, as I can clearly see many people in the recent months have been disappointed as I once was, others even not getting a reply.

Christmas day I took my family to lunch at the Chichester Hotel Restaurant. As it is my local I have been there many times over the 40 years since moving to Wickford. However last Christmas day our lunch was almost not worth the bother. While the food was good when it arrived (some 1 hour between each course) there was no table cloths, no decorations, no music in short nothing to say it was christmas other than a single cracker at each seat. Some guests complained on the day as the few staff that were there were run off their feet and many of the guests left in disgust before getting their sweet and coffee. So I wrote to the manager to complain and what did I get back......nothing not even the basic curtesy of an acknowledgement. So my message to the manager if you can't respond to my letter then even though I have spent thousands over the years you will never see me again. I know that there are others who have complained but I wonder if they had any reply. I understand that there was a change of management but this don't excuse the poor service and lack of curtesy in replying.

Shambles from the start....toast, chutney and ciabatta missing from the starters, all out at different times. Dinner was just awful! Cold, uncoordinated with sweet potato that was more perfumed than a granny's knicker drawer! Inedible :( Came out hungry. Will not go back :((

Went here for my hen do earlier in the year and had a fab time so decided to book for Christmas as a group of 12.Can't really fault the food that we were actually served but the service was appalling. Our table wasn't laid properly, some missing cutlery and crackers. It took about 45 mins for our starters to come out then another hour for our main. We were left with our plates in front of us that I ended up getting up and clearly our table. Eventually we got our desserts which by this point other tables were walking out. We are still awaiting our mince pies and cheese & crackers! The people serving did as best as they could under the circumstances but they were well understaffed. Apparently 7 people phoned in sick. If when we sat down the manager approached us and said sorry the service might not be quick then we probably wouldn't of minded as much. But the manager was rude and useless. There was one barman trying to run the bar on his own and clear tables whilst the manager stood around looking like a lemon. We have since emailed and complained. Which we had to keep nagging for a reply. The reply was sorry for not reaching your expectations. And that was more a less it! We paid £730 just for the meal and the service. Service which we didn't receive!! We are now taking it to the CEO of the chain of the company.

Booked a table for 8 for Christmas Day so it cost a lot of money. When we turned up for the 2 pm sitting, the table was only set for 7 and we had to wait half an hour for the place setting which was made up of odds and sods - bad omen. Waited nearly an hour for our order to be taken and throughout the afternoon we did nothing but wait - for the starters, main course and dessert. We also had to clear dirty glasses off our table and ask someone to take the dirty food plates afte they had been sat on our table for half an hour. We finally gave up at five past five and left before the cheese board and coffee and mince pies - we had had enough of waiting and everyone was bored and fed up. I have heard the Chichester has been taken over by Seasoned Events who do not have a very good reputation in the hospitality business. I did email the Chichester on 27th December and they have not even had the courtesy to reply to my email. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS RESTAURANT!

Christmas Lunch was an absolute disaster and spoilt our Christmas Day. We've been coming to the Chichester for Christmas Lunch and New Year's Eve for 10 years and have always enjoyed it and looked forward to it. When we arrived there was no cloakroom attendant so my friends decided not to chance putting their expensive coats in there unsupervised. Our table was booked for 1.45 and were shown to our table. 30 minutes later the waitress came to take our order and we asked for a jug of water, no water arrived. No one came and asked if we would like to order drinks and there was no wine list either. Starters arrived promptly but then we had to wait for an hour and a half for our main course, at 5.06 our desert arrived - no desert forks though. We didn't bother to wait for cheese and biscuits or mince pie, we would have been there all night as by this time there was only 2 staff left, we did manage to get coffee but had no teaspoons. Not enough staff for Christmas Day, people were getting wrong meals to what they’d ordered and a couple got fed up because they got the wrong meal after 2 hours and walked out. 5 waiters to serving 120 people, what a joke, even one of the chefs came out to help serve, 3 waiters walked out and one went home crying, perhaps as it is under new management they got rid of too many staff and now you have staff on basic wages who could not care less. This is not the first time, it was nearly the same 2 weeks ago.

Too start with, I had too go up to the bar and ask for my meal to be ordered, I then waited 30 mins for them to come back to me with my food, my poor nan was then Aggitated with the level of noise, so she went to the bathroom, I then was concerned with how long she had taken so I went to find her, and then saw a boy with a 'sid' tattoo push her over. I just looked st him and started loling. My nan then got up and superman punched him in the nose. After this event we had desert. Best pavlova I have ever eaten. Lastly shortly after my meal i really needed a poo, so I went to the toilet, and after I had finished, realised there was no toilet paper. I was absolutely disgusted. So I wiped my bum with my bare hand and went back to my food. Which tasted rather poo after. Overall I had a smashing time. Can't wait for next year. Thank you for your Service.

Orders were taken and starters arrived, nicely presented although salmon portion was a little small. After they were cleared we received our mains, I had the steak and ale pie which was superb!! We were all happy with the mains and it got better with desserts! I was informed by the staff that the kitchen made the sticky toffee pudding from scratch and it did not disappoint!!! There were only a few staff there but I have to say overall our experience was brilliant!!! Thank you Chichester and all the staff on the day, we will be back next year!

Starters was good but my sister only had 1 of the stuff mushrooms where as my dad had two so not sure what that was about, here's where it all went wrong waited ages for are mains but when it finally got to us all the veg was overdone, Turkey crumbled from how dry it was, I was missing a stuffing ball, and my dads pie was missing the bottom half of the pastry!, sweets where ok nothing special but didn't get any cheese and biscuits so overall worst Christmas meal ever. Over the past 20 years we have been to the Chichester on numerous occasions including Christmas Day, New Year's Eve and the the Dinner Dances for special occasions. This was our worst experience there, and probably our worst ever Christmas dinner. We were a party of 4 in the Chichester Suite. When we arrived we noticed that the cloak room was open and unmanned so we decided not to put our coats in there for security reasons. On previous visits a member of staff had taken our drinks order but not on this occasion. We had to queue up at the bar, and get our own drinks, which took a while as there was only one member of staff behind the bar. After waiting 40 minutes no-one had been to our table to take our food order so my husband had to go and ask for someone to take our order which they eventually did. As other reviewers have already mentioned the menu on the table was different to the one we were sent in the post. We had already pre-ordered my husband's meal as he is gluten free but we might as well not have bothered as his food was no different to the rest of us and they didn't even provide him with a gluten free roll which they have always done in the past. After about 20 minutes our starters arrived. The prawn cocktails consisted of very few prawns and a lot of salad including a long thin strip of cucumber which was difficult to eat. The smoked salmon had a couple of pieces of salmon about the size of a 50p pieces. We then waited about another 50 minutes for our main courses to arrive. These were OK but nothing special and the steak pie was overcooked and some of our party found their turkey tough. We were given one small dish of vegetables between us. After finishing our main course we then waited and waited but no-one came to clear our plates away. We could see that other parties were having the same problem and a lot of people were complaining and we saw some people getting up and walking out. There were only about 3 - 4 waiting staff to serve around 100 people. We even saw one of the chefs come out serving dinners and one of of the waitresses went out crying. After about an hour of waiting and our plates still hadn't been cleared my husband went and spoke to one of the managers. He said that we were fed up of waiting and would like to forgoe our desert etc and receive a partial refund. He was told that this wasn't possible as all refunds had to be made through head office. He told her in that case we wanted our deserts served served straight away. After this our table was cleared promptly and our deserts were served. The cheesecake was fine but the pavlovas were just a thin hard meringue with a spoon of berries on top. We had to ask for cream to go with our deserts.Once we had finished our deserts we were so fed up with the whole experience and guessed that we would have another long wait we decided to go without the tea/coffee, cheese and biscuits, mince pies and mints (which were all included in the £60 price per head we had paid). I would also add that there was no table cloth on our table, although some tables did have cloths on. There was insufficient cutlery on the table and my husband had to go and ask for more cutlery and some of the cutlery was dirty. On our way out we saw the male manager and my mother and husband told him how disappointed we were and that it had ruined our Christmas day. My husband asked him why there were so few waiting staff as on our previous visits there had always been many more. He replied that some staff had gone sick and let them down. My husband pressed him as to how many waiting staff there should have been working and he replied that he thought it was about 8 or 9. He wasn't at all sympathetic or apologetic to us or others who complained about our Christmas day being spoilt. When we got outside in the car park we found that some people had been given free bottles of wine in compensation but we were not offered this.We only found out a few days earlier that the Chichester had been brought out by a large company. They are obviously only interested in profit and not in customer service. We were extremely disappointed and will never return to the Chichester again while it is run by the current owners. They should compensate all of us who were there for Christmas Day Dinner with at least a partial refund. I'm sure that BBC Radio Essex and other local media will be very interested in these experiences on Christmas Day. It will be interesting to see if the management learn from this and improve things for New Year's Eve - although fortunately we have not booked for this.

When arriving for lunch you would hardly have known it was Christmas. Hardly any decorations compared to two years ago when we had a wonderful time. Waitress took orders for all three courses at the same time bit unusual and from then on it went rapidly downhill. Starter was served not too long after but very dissapointing amount of prawns in the prawn cocktail, soup acceptable. Once crackers pulled it was left on the table and no one cleared tables until main arrived 30 minutes later still left cracker debris on table!! main course acceptable but nothing special vegetables just run of the mill, and there our plates stayed no one cleared table and it was then that we realised that our waitress had disappeared!!! Apparently she had walked out!!! Manager no where to be seen either. After 40 minutes waiting for dessert we decided to leave as did a table of 12 next to us. So no dessert no mince pies no coffee. This was in the barn but the same happening In the main restaurant. Under new management we now know do they have ANY experience in the restaurant business? We think not. Will never go again, disgusting way to treat people many of whom are returning customers. We will be seeking compensation as are others.

What a disappointment. Very poor service through out the entire meal. We were a Party of 9 people who have eaten many a time here before including Christmas Day on at least 3 occasions. This time not at all what we were expecting, we were served our starter quite promptly but then went down hill from there on . We waited almost an hour before our main was brought out and when she brought mine it was the wrong dinner ( I ordered turkey she brought beef) she then asked had I changed my mind as she had beef for me!!!The turkey was dry and the vegetables which accompanied it were awful and very few. We were all still hungry after we had finished so we're looking forward to dessert. Another hour passed and still our table hadn't been cleared, not at anytime was we asked it we required a drink we had to get it ourself from the bar area. People around us were all complaining and a few left as they got fed up with waiting for there dessert. We asked when our dessert would be brought out and was told soon, then another waiter appeared and said they had missed placed our order so could they take it again, at this point we also decided to leave as it was now 4.15 and we had been seated since 1.30.Coffee was to follow next so god knows what time this would have been.I can only guess that the new management has never run a restaurant before and I look forward to hearing his comments and expect some sort of refund if not a full refund on our £60 per head.

We have just walked out of the Chichester Restaurant after only two courses and sitting at the table for 2 and a half hours then to be told they had lost our desert order which was given at the same time as starter and main orders! This was in the Essex barn where 3 other tables walked out but our understanding is that this was also the case in the main restuatant. We have had Christians dinner here numerous times and never experienced anything like this! The food was sub standard, prawn cocktail was mainly salad, bread and 8 small prawns! For £60 per head this was not the norm. Our table alone was £540 plus our drinks then to walk out after 2 courses! Not how you want your Christmas dinner to go at all. The menu sent by e mail was different to that on the table? The staff or lack of them did not keep us informed of the wait, no condiments offered at the meal, need I go on. This has really put us off eating here ever again as we have frequently used the fought the year. We will be looking for compensation for ruining our Christmas Day!!!!! Laura, Rayleigh

We booked a table for 7 in May and was sent the menu which as in previous years was really varied with many delicious options! We were all spoilt for choice! Last night the menu was completely different with limited variety. When the food arrived it did not look appetising neither did it taste it! No mince pies at the end of the meal either! The atmosphere wasn't Christmassy, lights were on full and no music! Such a shame as it was our best party venue and we have all said we will not be going back. The new management need to go back to the old ways or they will be losing a lot of custom.

We all met at the bar and the house wine per glass was extortionate at £6. All were called to take our seats and tables were already layed for us. Seating and decor were fine. NO water glasses or jugs noted. Looked at menu and for the money spent there was very little choice for a vegetarian (me). Orders were taken and the wait was reasonable. Still no water on the table. The starters came; were fine. The main meal came separate from the vegwtables and potatoes. Of course fine to help yourself but not fine if you have to keep asking people to pass them about on HEAVY and hot dishes.Had to ask for water glasses and then had to ask for a jug separate. Brought to only one table with no thought that the rest of the very large group may want some. People HAD TO ASK individually to get it for their tables.Christmas crackers were on the table but the debri from them was just left on the tables rather than collected to make room for the dishes. Most of us reluctantly threw the paper under the table. We had coffee or tea served afterwards but there was no traditional mint or biscuit served with it.

Having been regulars to the Chichester for a few years now we were looking forward if a little worried to all the new changes that we heard were coming and were definitely not disappointed... A new carvery has started in the pub area which is where we always dine, greeted as always by very friendly staff and was told they would have a table for us shortly. Shown over to table near the fire, we chose the one course carvery and at £6.50 is fantastic value. Very surprised to see lamb on the carvery, which my husband was chuffed with, I opted for the gammon, great selection of veg, haven't had cauliflower cheese in ages! Also lovely thick gravy, good tasty food! cant comment on pudding as we were so full up. Four of us went there for the 3 course carvery after hearing it mentioned on BBC Essex. Apparently it had changed hands and if you quoted the Radio station you got a free glass of wine. So we booked. The staff were very pleasant but the young man serving us obviously was new and didnt have a clue.He did try hard though but slower you couldn't get.!!! The starters were fine. We asked for Winter vegetable soup which came piping hot and tasty with a bread roll and two pats of butter. It was the strangest winter veg soup I have ever had. It was Mushroom soup with a few veggies added. But very tasty. We had to pile our plates at the end of our long table as it was obvious nobody was coming to clear them away. We went up and got our carvery meal.!! Where do I start? Too many faults to go into detail. My turkey was like eating boiled blotting paper, ditto the piece of Gammon I had. There didn't seem to have been a speck of seasoning added anywhere. A completely tasteless meal that was as with most carveries, luke warm. The brussel sprouts were the strangest colour and none of us risked trying them. My hubbies Beef was inedible. He was unable to cut the meat with his knife. We both left most of our dinners. Not once did any staff come near us. We called someone over and asked them to clear our plates. We then sat and waited for someone to take our dessert order. We ended up going up to the bar. The desserts were fine. Nice portions and tasty. Again we sat and waited for anybody to come and ask how we were doing, nothing.! We flagged a lady passing and asked for our bill. When It came up they had only charged us for two courses plus £2 for the smallest cup of tea. I am usually scrupulously honest when paying bills and have always corrected them to their benefit but this time we felt so let down by the whole experience that we just paid up and left. We did leave a tip which they seemed quite suprised about. Our plates were still on the table when we walked out. It was a busy place with people coming and going all the time we were there but there was nobody to greet you, which seems to be the norm now, lots of people just eating then going. Very poor experience. Thank goodness we had the starters and desserts, otherwise it would have been a total disaster. Will not be going back.

Our party of 11 went to the Chichester for my mother-in-laws birthday last Sunday. We have been to the Chichester many times but not since it has been taken over. When we arrived we went into what used to be the bar area but is now the Cavery. We were all told to wait in there. We ordered drinks but were constantly in peoples way. We weren't really sure where we were supposed to wait, no-one gave any indications or suggested elsewhere so we waited there until we were called. We know decor is most probably in the process of going to be done as the other area looks lovely (we hope so!!) The restaurant area really stands out and looks so dated and tired! The Menu has changed in that choices have been greatly reduced. The food quality was poor and a lot to be desired - I will not be going there to eat again! I had the beef, Stilton and ale pie. We all said it was like eating a meal full of salt!! The roast beef was as my son put it 'beef flavoured chewing gum' and we all felt that the food served was nowhere the quality that used to be served prior to the change of owners. Dessert waffles were served stone cold with the tiniest amount of syrup, the crumble was ok but again served luke warm. We didn't make a fuss because it was my mother-in-law's birthday gathering and we didn't want her to feel any more disappointed with how the meal had gone. She did call to talk to someone about how disappointed she was and how we all were and was told that the manager would call her back - this has upto writing this never happened. I have tried calling and haven't got through so have taken to writing this on trip advisor. Shame about how it all went as we definitely won't be visiting there ever again and a shame that the quality of food in the restaurant was not very good!! Such a shame!! The Chichester needs to definitely approach how things are being done in the restaurant area as it just is not good anymore and if they know this then they should not be serving food in there until it is sorted out.

The Chichester used to quite frankiy be a dump . But as it has changed hands we decided to try the carvery for my birthday last night and what a treat! The Stable Bar which has been refurbished beautifully and from where the carvery was served . The food was superb and the staff were wonderful - full marks. I am hoping the rooms are refurbished to the high standard that the rest of the hotel is being. I would not consider recommending the rooms to anyone until they are done . But all looking fantastic for the future. One small point was that we went into reception to ask where carvery was. The receptionist would have looked far more professional and set a tone if she had been in a uniform, also she was wearing a woollen scarf!!! Little things like that make a difference - lose the scarf!

I questioned several of the staff why things had changed and what had happened - there faces said it all as did their replies 'most of us are quitting in the morning' its changed hands - we were told and for the worse, the new owners dont care for their guests or their staff. I paid good money to take my staff to the Chichester and I feel like I have been robbed. Such a same as it used to be so good. Its now a waste of money and a big disappointment.

Our party of 20 celebrated my husband's 60th birthday at the Chichester Restaurant. Service was patchy. Meal orders taken quickly, but when main courses arrived, the first ones served had to wait for everyone else to be served on our table before any vegetables came along. All meals appeared to be enjoyed. Good selection of courses. Cake brought out at end of meal and cut into portions and wrapped by staff as I requested.

Tried out the Chichester carvery for the first time on Sunday evening and was very pleased I did. The Carvery options were good and vegetables tasted perfect unlike some overcooked wilted veg I have had at other carvery's. One of my daughters chose the fish pie which looked excellent & she enjoyed very much. The carvery was washed down with a nice bottle of Chenin Blanc. There are three price options depending if you wish to have 1, 2 or 3 courses. The mains I though is very good value.

I have left a review before for this restaurant and said how amazing it was returning again in June which was just as good. On my recommendation a family member booked a party for a 50th birthday celebration. Oh my goodness. Absolutely distraught at the decline of excellence concerning the food. It makes me feel ill the thought of it. Salmon for main came out cold. Steak with so much fat on. Veg came out in dishes as if just taken from the carvery. Cold, little of, only 2 small potatoes each. And all lukewarm. Will definitely not be going back. Glad I didn't book my works do here.

I took my wife and children as I had heard that the Chichester has started to under go a refurbishment. We went for Sunday lunch and thoroughly enjoyed the new all day carvery. The refurbishment looked great and I look forward to the rest of the hotel being done. The food was really good and fantastic value. £15 for three course Sunday lunch!!We will be returning soon.

Called in as we were passing and had a really nice carvery. Lovely meat Proper roast potatoes and veg cooked how they should be. Really nice and in very clean surroundings. Both bar staff very friendly. Best of all couldn't believe how cheap the night had been when we paid the bill. Have paid double for same meal elsewhere and not as nice

Have been there before and it has always been very busy. A lot quieter this time. Service good and staff friendly. Good range of food available. Tasty food, good portions. Price reasonable. One of the ladies loos and one of the disabled loos out of action. Should have been sorted before large group were expected.

We visited in December one lunchtime there was around 6 of us and we were the only people in here however not sure if lunchtime is a really busy time for them. Food was really nice and from what I can remember wasn't all that fast but not slow either, it was nice to have a cooked meal made for you as no doubt we all had something different from the menu - which wasn't set for Christmas which was nice for this time of year.

Front of house last night was very quick to convince us the place was rammed just to get a £10 entry fee out of us only to walk in and walk straight back out, absolutely dead - we were one of about 5 people. Very disappointing and mis-leading to the point we didn’t even bother getting a drink.
