This is a popular cafe right in the centre of Burton on the Water. While many of the other cafes in the town seem to close quite early, the Chestnut Tree stays open later. It has a good selection of food and drinks. When it is busy it can take a while to find a free table.

The scones were mushy and bland. Both the jam and the cream were little pre-packages that looked unappealing and were virtually tasteless. I'd say they came off a grocery store shelf but that would be unfair to grocery stores. Both the taste and quantity were unsatisfactory. The cream teas didn't look anything like the photo on their website or like any cream tea I've had elsewhere. It's a travesty to even call it a cream tea. The tea was fine but the rest was inadequate. And at £12+ it was way overpriced. It wasn't worth £1. I should have said something to the staff at the time but I find it difficult to complain to people. I wouldn't be writing this now except that it was so bad that it nagged me for quite a while. We left early the next morning or I'd have stopped by to voice my concerns and request a refund. Some of the pastries on display looked okay but don't go near the cream tea.

REALLY EXPENSIVE! £30 for 3 meal deals which consisted of a sandwich, bag of crisps and a drink. Sitting outside was nice on a sunny day but that was about it. The cakes looked really good, but I’d already paid £30. Wouldn’t go back sadly. Should’ve gone to one of the pubs instead

Meh, there’s better cafe’s to enjoy, the coffee was nice however pictures rested on the toilet system with dusty fake plants above along with dusty 1:2 attached light fittings with cobwebs didn’t give us the vibe of a looked after quaint cafe, we asked for the wifi code, they didn’t have it, had to ask for our tea cake to be toasted more, had to ask for brown sugar, all the above just made it farcical really, shame as it’s got a great location.

Over the years I have stayed in Bourton on The Water several times. I love the picturesque village. I have noticed that some businesses take advantage of the tourists by charging them excessive prices especially for food. I recently visited the Chestnut Tree and bought one pasty and one jam donut to take out, I didn’t enjoy the pasty could only eat half of it, the jam donut was just ok. I was charged over £8. Rip off Britain springs to mind, some places charge the tourists a fair price while sadly others want to bleed them dry. I will never step foot in The Chestnut Tree again, shame they didn’t have a Greggs in Bourton on The Water, much better value, and I would have saved myself £4.76

My friend and I were looking for somewhere to have lunch. We were very pleased with The Chestnut Tree's menu and left very full and contented. I can recommend the jacket potatoes, but there's so much on the menu to choose from. Also, they have a bakery with fresh delicious cakes, pastries and pasties. Oh, not forgetting their ice-cream!

We had a traditional pasty and a cheese & onion pasty. They were extremely tasty however somewhat overpriced we thought. It's also not the biggest of places so seating could be an issue we suspect. We were lucky as another party were just leaving. We gave an average score not for the food, but for the seating issue and cost.

Visited with my mum who is dairy intolerant. Really happy to find dairy free options that were not covered in seeds or flapjack related! There were two vegan cake options, plus a vegan cream tea. Our only disappointment was that the vegan cream tea comes without cream but is charged the same as others. For those who don't have any dietary requirements, the cake options are amazing! I had the Biscoff Rolo cookie cake. Yum! Looking around, the toasted sandwiches looked really good.

Dreadful experience. A bread roll with ham and salad cost £6.50. I'd expect it to be a very good one for that price. (You pay extra for sitting inside too, despite having to collect your own cutlery too). The bread rolls were very dry and crumbly, the filling minimal and tasteless and no butter or margarine. Got a refund for the two rolls we purchased after complaining. The young lad who took the rolls away said to us that he'd tell the manager they were 's*1*'. Charmed I'm sure! Won't be back. See the other reviews saying the same thing. Expensive and nasty.

Cheap ingredients and trying to maximise profits - saw a waitress come back from Londis next door with 4 of the cheapest white loaves of bread you can find in her hand for the sandwiches. The most basic sandwiches you will see and not cheap. The cream tea was bizarre. No plate not even a paper plate, just a paper bag like ones you get sweets in and the scone was boiling hot like it had been in the microwave and completely stuck to the paper bag. The cheapest jam and margarine spread too. Simply ripping off tourists with no care at all as to quality.

Watching two elderly ladies being told that if they want sugar, they have to go and get it themselves. One of them was on a Zimmer frame and the other one could hardly walk. Simply an organisation that is ripping of tourists.

The worst cream tea ever. Around £6.50 per person but made with pre made packet wrapped scones, awful packet processed e number jam, cream and one refill of tea, served in paper cups, with plastic utensils and no plates, not even paper. It’s very shocking that businesses in a prime spot, opposite the waterway, in a tourist haven Cotswold village would demean their business and go for maximum profit without thinking about the customer or long-term viability. I suppose they will always attract customers like me but who won’t return. And this from someone who isn’t a tourist but lives nearby. I dread to think what tourists would think. To top it off, there is a 10% surcharge to eat inside with the sand standard of cutlery and food. If the business excuse is that there was a shortage of anything then the usual price shouldn’t be charged. I’m very annoyed at a time when customers are paying lots to eat and judicious about where they would go out so the least I would think is us not to be taken granted for and for all cafes, restaurants and bars to aim high. Especially for food / cafe eateries items that are integral to British culture and what are staple tourist / holiday food items.

Made the mistake of calling in when visiting the lovely village of Bourton on the Water. Service was absolutely shocking. How can it take in excess of fifteen minutes to make two cups of coffee? It’s not as if they were busy. Maybe if the three young girls behind the counter spent less time chatting they might actually get around to serving customers. After about ten minutes we asked how much longer it was going to be, she casually said “I’m going to do it now”! They obviously skimp on the quality of their products too because when it finally arrived it was hot and brown but that’s where the similarity to coffee ended. It neither tasted or smelled like coffee. In fact it didn’t taste of anything!! Definitely not worth the wait.

Lots of staff but nobody taking control, staff standing round looking at one another all doing one another’s jobs, getting in one another’s way. Took 10 minutes queueing up just to pay! Coffee had to be requested several times as they forgot to make it., and in fairness it was not good coffee either. It needs a shake-up, modernisation and for a rethink on staffing roles. Until then- AVOID!

Our lunch turned up in disposable packaging (not very environmentally friendly) although we had been advised this when we ordered. We still had to wait until our food was almost eaten before our drinks arrived. Upon returning for cakes, yet more disgruntled customers asking if anyone was serving, while I was getting squashed into the cold drinks unit by impatient families. Then our cake was served in paper bags, for us to eat at the table!! Overall not impressed. I know this is under new management, but I was hoping it would improve from the previous ones. Shame really since the food was reasonable.

We found a table ourselves which hadn’t been cleaned . My husband ordered a coffee , a glass of water and two pieces of cake from a different lady who clearly didn’t have a clue what she was doing . Dithering over where to put things , what to make etc .Couldn’t remember 4 items . I then sat and observed them serving and clearing tables . Not one table was cleaned between customers (COVID!! and more ) one table was cleared and then a hand was swept over it to move the crumbs ! (Not remove) I dread to think what this place is like at the height of summer with lots of visitors . Must be total mayhem . Avoid , there’s much nicer places where you’ll feel welcome . Shame as the cake was nice .

Spent north of £30 for 2 ‘toasties’ and a jacket potato - order was incorrect, and when rectified was even worse. I’ve attached a photo of the ‘cheese and ham toastie’ I bought for my son - needless to say he hardly touched it. Had to clear our own table and will never be returning.

We managed to get a table on the green outside. The sausage rolls ans baguettes were excellent. Coffee tea and soft drinks were also good. It was a lovely day very warm and a great place to sit and watch the many visitors to this pretty cotswold village.

Stayed at this b&b from Wednesday 1st September to Saturday 4th 2021. Excellent location right in the middle of the village. The B&B itself was very clean and tidy/cosy. All the staff were pleasant and friendly. Breakfast was superb with good portions, we went for the full English every morning,,delicious..The village is very quaint with plenty of pubs and a lovely village green beside the river. We had days out in burford, stow,Oxford and a Roman villa not far from Cheltenham. Best place to eat in burton on the water we found was The Rose pub , fantastic food great service.. Graham & Marie Clift

My husband and I visited this cafe mid morning on Saturday of August bank holiday weekend. The village was starting to get busy on that dry but dull day, however there was plenty of seating outside and inside. The cafe is in the centre of the village on the main road. You order and pay at the counter and they bring your food to you. Large selection of cakes, pastries, hot and cold sandwiches and drinks. I loved my strawberry flavoured “coffin” ie coffee muffin, tea was served in tea pots. Other guests enjoyed their meals outdoor on the grass with their dogs.

This is an excellent teas and cake house. There are only limited seats inside though one the green outside there are many seats and tables. Both the coffee and cakes were very nice though the service was quite slow.

Absolutely Appalling! Bought a ‘fresh’ loaf and it turns out to be mouldy on the day we bought it !

Popular pub in a nice setting by the river with a good selection of ales. Food was excellent and service first class. Will return at some stage.

The food quality was only so-so, service was very slow though the pub was almost empty. The food took a very long time to arrive, the scampi was overdone, I ordered mushy peas and they brought garden peas, a very small portion./ Won't be going to this pub again.

Very nice welcome and decent burger and chips on a quiet wed evening. Plenty of parking. Cosy fire. Recommended - go along and support your local pub!

On a very wet day walking from the Corinium Museum the warmth and busyness of Keith's was attracting quite a few people. Quick and efficient service of coffee and cake/scone, and a lot more tables available than you can see from the street. Very wide selection of speciality teas and coffees on offer, together with attractive containers.
