Lovely pub - warm welcome, friendly staff, dog friendly, great atmosphere. The food was divine - this was our second visit. All three meals were thoroughly enjoyed. Good portions. But had room for pudding! Everything delicious. Good service. Will always choose to come here when in the area.

This pub has it all. It's so beautiful, with fantastic history. It was lovely to see the photos from years ago. The drinks range was good, we enjoyed an ale we had never tried before. My partner had a bacon & block pudding stack. We opted for steak & ale pie & the slow roaated belly pork. Everything was perfect. The menu was the best I've ever seen, covering every type of meal, small, main, baskets, sandwiches, jacket potato, vegan & vegetarian. The dessert menu looked amazing. Car parking was at the front. Beer garden at the back. We spotted this pub walking down from Losehill. We saw it was very popular with walkers. Dogs are allowed. It also has rooms. The lady who served us was fabulous, making us welcome from the minute we arrived.

The venison was sublime, probably the best I’ve had cooked rare on request to perfection. Belly pork was also a hit. Lovely old inn although outside of the flagged area the later additions of furniture look out of place but fine fires, ales & service.

Well kept beer, very good food and friendly service. The only downside is that the pub is old and rather cold and draughty. Not a problem if you are warmly dressed; there are fires but they don't give off much heat.

We had read the reviews so chose this pub for a Saturday evening meal during our week away in Castleton. First impressions were good. A traditional pub and a warm welcome. We were sat in the top room and were the first to be seated. Two other couples came in after us and sat on adjacent tables. After a 30 minute wait and after being ignored in favour of the other couples, our order was finally taken by the waitress. It was far from busy. Perhaps 10 people in the whole establishment. The adjacent couple apologised for ordering ahead of us and we both agreed that the pub was cold. To be fair the food then came quickly. My black pudding stack starter was spot on. Main course of chicken pie advertised as shortcrust pastry came with a fly away filo top that was disappointing but the food was ok. Nothing to write home about. The young lady behind the bar who served us was lovely and was apologetic about our initial wait. We commented on how cold it was in the pub. We ate out every night on our holiday in this area and this was the one meal that didn’t live up to expectations.

Went with friends today to this lovely pub. I have an auto immune disease which means I can’t eat dairy/ gluten and I choose not to eat meat so my social activities around food are stressful and a constant struggle, I chose this venue because the menu had a vast choice of vegan and gluten free, the choices we varied and I was spoilt for choice. The food was great and the service even though it was very busy was spot on. We will definitely be going again.

We stayed here on a weekend trip to the Peak District. We did an 8 mile circular walk from the train station in Hope and passed the Inn on the route which was nice! We had dinner here on the Saturday night which was just fabulous - gorgeous old pub, friendly service, stunning food. I had lamb followed by crumble and my husband had belly pork followed by crumble. The meat was all local and everything delicious. Busy place so you should book! We stayed overnight in a lovely room (room 6) - well equipped with lots of bedding, towels and coffee. Breakfast was great - a perfect menu with good choices. Very friendly. Lovely to be sitting next to the roaring fire. We’ll definitely return!

We visited this pub with our springer spaniel for Sunday lunch . We were greeted by a very present gentlemen who offered us towels as it was raining heavy, he advised where our table was and poured our drinks. The meal itself was excellent , really good quality home cooking with fresh ingredients. Whilst we were there a table of four came in who were extremely rude to the gentlemen and they ruined the atmosphere however, it did pick up again once they left. Overall a very pleasant experience, great quality home cooked food and excellent service. Well worth a visit.

What’s the chances!!! Popped in for a pint after driving the Edale loop with family. Only had one frothy Blonde but enjoyed the old pub and the staff were friendly. Realised when we got home that we had been in the pub before when we stayed many years ago at a nearby hotel. Didn’t even recognise the area but I know we had been out walking and got completely drenched about 20 years ago and stumbled across this pub. I remember the pint was good then!! Excellent stop over no matter what the circumstances. Has stood the test of time (well ours anyway!)

They managed to give us a table as we decided last minute to eat here having arrived that evening at our B&B. We were impressed by the range of non-meat options and thoroughly enjoyed our evening meal - decent pub meal at a good price point and friendly, hard working staff. The range, standard of food and service are at the right price point and we wouldn't hesitate to return. Lovely old building with low ceilings in places - I'm tall so had to keep an eye out whilst moving around - but wouldn't change a thing. Would recommend pre-booking as it's a busy and welcoming place - we recommend the Cheshire Cheese for a meal/drink.

I booked a table for 5 people for 16th Dec at 12.15. We all arrived early and the three who were eating ordered before 12.15. Two were just having coffee. Despite the pub being quiet we did not get our meals until 5 past 1. Other people were being served who came in after us. I asked a staff member how long the food would be and she came back with the answer not long. I said how long is not long and she said about 5 minutes. It was another good ten minutes before the food arrived. The festive roast looked very nice but the pie and the lamb kebabs ( minus the skewer as they didn't have any) were not very good-- Tough and nearly cold lamb and a dry looking pie. An experience not to be repeated.

On 16th Dec 2024, I made the mistake of dining at this place, what a disaster. I was there with some of my family, I ordered fish and chips, when it came, I couldn’t believe it. The fish was slightly larger than a fish finger, there were about 15/16 cold chips, the peas were scattered around the plate. The chap in charge came and apologised, saying they’d run out of fish, and said he would reimburse us for it, that never happened. They’d also put mine on a smaller plate, to make it look like a bigger meal. If that’s the standard, it’s atrocious
