The Chequers Walthamstow in City of London, Westminster

Quirky central pub, with good pizza. Good range of beer. Outdoor courtyard is popular. Furniture "shabby chic", and more comfortable than it used to be. Emphatically dog-friendly, with water and biscuits available. Friendly staff promote a good atmosphere. Historically decidedly rough (a previous landlord would allow favoured punters to feel the tip of the bullet still lodged in his side, which he acquired on the premises!) the idea of trouble now seems incongruous in this easy-going place. Nice to see decent cask beer available again (Five Points Best).

Great atmosphere very nice food and very good service

We were running late so called ahead and Emily answered she was happy to hold our table. From entering, the pub had character. We were greeted then seated by a very pleasant host and gifted an anniversary card and bubbles (8th wedding anniversary) we were offered specials and explained the menu, great drinks menu with lots to offer for everyone. We ordered and the food came in a timely fashion I had the steak and ale pie a must try and hubby had the burger on this occasion the fries were over cooked but check back done and they replaced fries instantly. We couldn’t fault anything and will definitely return. Thank you

So, having visited the place where I spent a lot of my 20s recently, I have to say it's good to see the old place is still going. It was nice to see a DJ playing some songs from the era that was most impactful on my youth. I remember the Tuesday metal night with more than just a little fondness, but all things change in time and sadly, long gone are the days of moshing out to Sound Garden, Pantera, and Metallica and ending the night with some green jelly. It reminds me of all the people that I had known and some that have been lost (Hooper, Kate and Alan), to name a few and to those that are still going remember the good times sharing a bottle of brown and getting told to leave you don't have to go home you just can't say here. Incidentally, I remember waking up a few times in this pub in the 90s and thinking f it was morning. Where is my bike lol

A great local pub with quick service, reasonable prices, and a warm, inviting atmosphere. Perfect for a fun night out with friends, especially for their Karaoke and Themed nights.

Door was really lovey. Service was timely and friendly. Really enjoyed our lunch. Will be back!

Menu different to what was online. Ordered food and it arrived, crispy and too well done, and no cutlery brought over. Condiments had to be asked for and finally arrived. No alcohol free drinks apart from one type of beer and soft drinks. Forget having the table cleared of used glasses and plates, that took forever. Decor pretty naff. Disappointed- yes.

Had our work Xmas do here and it was fab...far better value than other local pubs in the stow/highams park area. Good choice of tap beers, high-end lamb shank and great service from start to end 👌👌👌

We had a lovely time, not too busy to start which gave us a good opportunity to chat, but it got very busy and we were glad that we came early. The quality of the food is good and portion sizes are very good, however I do feel it is a little expensive. Service is prompt and the location and atmosphere are lovely. I would recommend this pub if you can afford to pay a little more.

With a really bubbly atmosphere The Chequers has became our favourite place to spend our Sundays with family and friends. Staff is friendly and attentive and food is stunning, based on traditional dishes if you visit on a Sunday you will find the best Roast in town with various options suiting all tastes. Its amazing food along with its also great ambience make The Chequers a perfect place to enjoy a meal out with your love ones.

I visit regularly on Saturdays for pints of Five Points and to watch The Prem football. The food is all freshly prepared by chefs who care. The sourdough pizzas are as good as Yard Sale and I love the buffalo wings. Other options include fish n chips. Great pub. I’m always warming welcomed by Fin and the staff who run an excellent pub.

We had a great night here with some fun entertainment from Victoria Sponge. The staff were really friendly and efficient and the booze was very nice. All in all a very good experience.

Lovely meal and good service. Impressed that the free glass of wine with the Beef Wellington was discounted from our bottle of bubbly when it wasn’t required. We’ll be back soon!

The first thing you notice on entering this pub is that the décor is rather outdated. I know that the “distressed” look is coming back in but you tend to notice the difference if something is just past it. The next thing is the scruffy-looking bar staff who don’t exactly do the place any favours. Having said that, there is plenty space with a big garden at the back and more benches in the right-hand passage outside. Entertainment is often drag nights or drag bingo put on by the local events organiser but if they’re trying to turn it into a gay pub then a few barmen from Dorothy’s club wouldn’t go a miss, although it is questionable as to whether it would be their cup of tea. I decided not to have any food in this pub although you can see what goes on in the kitchen as it is behind the bar. I opted for bottled beer instead of draught in case the pipes weren’t clean. It’s the sort of place I might go if all other options were exhausted.

Great venue, nice staff and varied menus. It was surprisingly lacking in diners for a Tuesday lunchtime.

This was already one of our favourite pubs having recently moved to the area from Seven Sisters! The vibes are immaculate the staff are so nice and it’s queer positive. We heard they’d started to do Sunday roasts so came after having 3 consecutive awful roasts at other Walthamstow places. We got beef and chicken and extra cauliflower cheese and it was SO good! About £15 each and worth every penny, better than some £22 places we’ve been to. Only flaw was a slightly colder Yorkshire but everything else was perfect! Cant wait to come back, deffo go down.

Been to this pub/restaurant a number of times and would highly recommend it. Staff incredibly welcoming, friendly and attentive, menu is great with always amazing specials which are always explained. Had the Sunday Roast yesterday and staff always come round asking if you want seconds of roast potatoes and yorkshire puddings!!! Highly recommended and can't wait to visit again....

Great hidden little Gem, visited for my sons birthday. Very friendly and welcoming, excellent service throughout. Food was delicious and had a very board menu selection. Lovely spacious seating areas inside and outside, Separate from the main bar area. Highly recommended.

Actually an amazing first night there

We'd been to 3 or 4 other Peach Pubs and enjoyed them, so chose The Chequers for a reunion with old friends. We were not disappointed. Excellent choice of food and wines, pleasantly and efficiently served. Our guests loved it.

Great setting, lovely decor, wonderful staff who are very attentive. I wasnt a huge fan of the main I chose but that was just a personal preference thing. My wife loved hers. Its a nice pub. You won't be getting fine dining but it isn't supposed to be.

Great old pub for sitting in and outside in a big area for none smokers and smoking.. 4 drinks where £21.20 2 x 6.50 a print and 2 x 1 red and 1 white with lemonade wines.. Special meal deals through the week as well.

Excellent food and friendly service. Happy with to learn they have gluten-free choices as well.

Visited the Chequers recently for a Sunday roast as we'd heard lots of good things about their food with a relatively new chef. It certainly did not disappoint! Succulent pork belly with crispy tasty crackling, roast beef cooked perfectly pink, homemade delicious Yorkshire puddings, crispy & hot roast potatoes, delicious homemade gravey and perfectly cooked vegetables. We will definitely be back and wouldn't hesitate to recommend. Go early as they often sell out and I can see why!

Good £5 pizza but my Guinness and Black cost £5.90 which is really expensive plus the pub was freezing. I wasn't going to spend almost £6 again for another pint to sit in freezing cold pub.

great meal & friendly service. there was a lot of available space in the restaurant & for some reason we were herded into a corner table surrounded by families with extremely loud kids rather than having the option of sitting somewhere quieter where we could actually talk which was the only downside.

Never had a bad meal here. We come here often just for a meal out or birthday and anniversary celebrations. Food is always outstanding- our complements to the chef. The staff are always fun and courteous and knowledgeable of what’s in the menu. Highly recommended. X

With regret I have lower my rating. The lamb shank is not a lamb shank its just a few slices lamb. Was not impressed. The service was as good as it could be under the circumstances. Miss the days where I could ring up and book a particular table which is not possible now because of the online booking system. I have put my rating up as their roasts have gone back to their best. Well done

This is my local and I’ve been going here for many years. The staff are always friendly and look after regulars. Today I went in and I was informed that due to new policy any member of staff who is my friend were unable to serve me. I ended leaving the venue and going elsewhere. Normally a 5 star review but sorry, this has to change policy like Liz Truss did.

Just had lunch for 10. Great food and service very pleased. Kids portions where great and good choice on the menu. Not two big but big enough for Sunday lunch

late breakfast at the Chequers. Food was good as ever. Coffee and tea, didnt arrive until we had finished our breakfast despite 3 reminders to staff.When it finally arrived,, (an hour after we ordered breakast, apparently they had no teapots,) there was no milk for the tea, This was the start of the rudeness from the a young male member of staff. After repeated requests for the milk this young man said «  cant you see I dont have it on me and I am busy », and carried on doing something else.On being told this wasnt good enough, and that he was being rude, he told the manager (within our hearing)that someone « was getting arsy » Following this, Claire The Manager arrived to sort this out, and she dealt with it very well. We have never been spoken to in this manner, this young man has alot to learn about the service industry! (the key is in the job description). I appreciate that staff are hard to come by, but this service was unacceptable. Very disappointed as we brought friends to Chequers, it was their first visit!!!

We had a lovely lunch at the Chequers today. The staff were very attentive and friendly, particularly to our toddler. Our orders were taken and food delivered in good time, and our meals were delicious. The pub has a lovely atmosphere and I look forward to coming back.

Whilst the staff were extremely pleasant, service was very slow. Two of our party had the crab and salmon starter as a main course with fries and they said it was delicious. However, the other two had the chicken schnitzel and that was overcooked and dry. For desserts, the Jude ice cream was delicious but two of the party had the pavlova and it was rock hard and inedible. We have been to the Chequers in the past and had good service and good food. I appreciate it was a very busy Saturday night but that should not make a difference. So, overall, a rather disappointing experience.

Very quaint pub in a lovely village. Friendly staff and good food. The downside was the service was very slow.. We had to wait for over 40 minutes for the starter alone, which when it arrived was a little disappointing due to the portion size!. Although it was very busy, and you would expect to have to wait, it felt as though the young waiting staff had not been trained very well in making sure drinks arrived to the table and plates cleared once finished. We had to remind them of both, but that in my opinion is down to the management to oversee.

Nice pub, some pretty good IPAs on and plenty of outdoor seating. Will be back at some point.

Great food served timely without rush, server was attentive and helpful. Setting was great, very busy outside but calm and quiet inside. All to expected standard. Very happy!!

Food was a little disappointing and not up to the usually high standards. I've had the burger there many times but on this occasion lets just say it was rather basic, almost embarrassing how little there was on the plate.

There was a friendly welcome, the staff were attentive but not too much. The food was really good especially the goats cheese and fig starter, but to be honest it was all really good. There was a great selection of cocktails.

This is not our first time in chequers , unfortunately service wasn't up to usual standards ,had to ask 5 diff staff for a ordered jug of water and bring father's Day there was a issue with the gas. Normally with roast dinners we are normally offered extra veg and stuff has this changed?

Lovely venue, excellent and not typical pub food menu. Food perhaps not as good as anticipated. Staff not very attentive so made mistakes with drinks and food order. However, well worth a visit.

Booked breakfast for 6. We decided that we would eat outside as it was a lovely morning, we accepted that we would have to order at the bar, and did so with no problems. HOWEVER….when we went in to order more toast and coffee, I noticed that no-one was sitting in the pub area, everyone had decided to sit outside. Took ages to get served, as the waiters were all outside. Then one of my party asked the waiter for a jug of water and was told to order at the bar…really? They had no customers inside so why couldn’t they take the order outside? Our party went into the bar and then after 10 mins came back as no-one was serving. Maybe change this plan? It really doesn’t really work and it’s such a shame when it ‘s such a great place!!!

We go a few times a year, as the food is lovely, but we enjoy a beverage too, so it's never the cheapest meal out. But we had a late Sunday Lunch, food amazing, for some reason we waited near on an hour for our main courses, but totally worth it, plus they do amazing cocktails. Staff are always lovely too.

It’s hard to go to a restaurant and get a decent roast dinner!! The Chequers pulled it off and the best bit was when then come round and ask you if you want extra roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings and gravy!! My little one loves it!! The staff are so friendly and helpful too! Will def be back!!

Sadly the Sunday roast did not live up to expectations however for this course we were not charged. So unusual as I fairly regularly meet another friend for a midweek lunch and it has always been great.

We’ve dined here a few times and the food did not disappoint! There were, however, a couple of issues. We love the additional roasties, gravy etc. with Sunday lunch but these were bought to us literally as we were taking our first mouthfuls! We asked them to come back once we’d eaten a little more and subsequently they didn’t come back so we had to chase - I do wonder if they’d forgotten about us as the Yorkshire’s had been cut into too and the lady said a fresh batch of roasties was cooked. But in total comparison we waited a really long time for our desserts which is not ideal with children nearing bedtime - we had to chase again and it felt like the children’s puddings had been forgotten as there was a delay in them joining the others which we had to query. As always the food was delicious but sadly on this occasion the service didn’t feel as good as previous visits.

Food was exceptional and our server, Freddie?, was a really hardworking young man. It was great to see how busy it was as it added to the ambience but, the downside was the length of time it took for drinks orders to be fulfilled.

The evening turned out to exceed expectations as the restaurant accommodated our pace. The staff were amazing - always friendly. Everyone enjoyed the food. Good to be out again.
