Family birthday lunch. It coincided with Mother’s Day, and they coped really well to provide an excellent Sunday lunch. We were a party of 10, and we' were booked in to the second sitting. There was a selection of different roasts on the menu, together with a vegetarian selection. The 10 of us were all agreed about the quality and tastiness of the food. The staff were so helpful and friendly, also catering for a very fussy grandson, who had sausages cooked for him. The chef came out to apologise for any delay, which was not noticed by us. A truly enjoyable meal, appreciated by the whole family.

We visited the Chequers Inn when staying at the nearby Charney Manor hotel. We were greeted with a warm welcome and seated by the wood burning fire 🔥 lovely 😊 Great choices on the menu and the men in our group enjoyed a local beer. My husband had the lamb shank whilst I had beef and mushroom stroganoff, our companions had the Christmas dinner and steak pie. We all enjoyed our food especially the beautifully cooked vegetable which accompanied the meals. Although we probably didn’t need it we all had desserts which too were enjoyable. The nicest thing about the pub - welcoming staff and no TV or music playing, just an opportunity to sit, eat good food and talk to each other

Recommended by friends, we'd booked for dinner and took our well behaved dog with us. Unfortunately dogs weren't allowed in the restaurant area, but not a problem as the affable chatty landlord set us a place in the bar area, which then resulted in a fun evening chatting to the locals. Duck dumplings and slow cooked lamb were outstanding, with the sirloin steak - landlord's favoured cut- being exceptional ! Really friendly staff and delicious food-we'll certainly return !

Due to the snow we decided we would walk an hour to the pub (at the time was a good idea until we realised after we ate we would have to walk back in the dark) we arrived at 5.30pm so before food was being served but was directed straight to a table in the corner by the young girl behind the bar who also got us drinks. Another lady came over later (possibly owner) and gave us menus and went through the large selection of specials with us! She couldn’t have been more helpful and polite!

As soon as we walked through the door we were welcomed cheerfully, this is a lovely cosy public house that is also comes across as very clean. The waitress was lovely as was Mrs Owner who also waited on our table. The food was really delicious (best satay ever, my son informs me) and the portion size for the Sunday Roast were more than generous, 4 types of vegtables, roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding (sadly mine was a tad scorched) and extra gravy, couldn't move for the rest of the day! Starters and Mains arrived piping hot and there was good variety in the menu, venison, monkfish, pheasant burger an indication of same. We were not rushed through and while we were there we spotted somebody eating steak that looked deliciously tender, so we will absolutely be back to try their specialty. Lovely quality food, go soon.

A friend and I took a trip out to this charming pub on one of our 'let's give it a try' days. It's not many minutes off the busy A420. Charming old building with a warm welcome. Plenty of tables to choose from - it should be busier to be honest. Lovely bright and sunny lady behind the bar took our order. My friend had the soup (I can't recall the flavour - oops) -he's a big soup and bread fan and enjoyed it very much. The soup looked properly made in the kitchen. I had the whitebait starter - crisp and yummy with nice warm bread and tartare sauce - simple but well cooked. For mains my friend had sausages with mash and vegetables. He asked if he could have bacon instead of sausages and that was no trouble at all to them - how kind! He also requested that his bacon be very very well done - and it was cooked to a nice snappy crispness - just right. I had the mushroom stroganoff with perfect rice, mixed mushrooms, creamy with the rice starch as it should be.

We spent one night staying at the charming village of Charney Bassett and this was our local pub. We had dinner here. We found the pub cosy and welcoming and the staff friendly. We enjoyed some of the dishes more than others. The mushroom starter was superb and so was the mushroom sauce which went with the steak, however, according to my partner, the rump steak was a disappointment as it had too much fat on it. We didn’t complain as everything else was good. Our son was given a humongous portion of pork ribs which he enjoyed. The wine was very good, while my scampi were ok. The chips were good. As the portions were very generous we didn’t have any space left for dessert. We would certainly recommend, but may want to avoid the steak. The pub also has some nice rooms to stay, although we didn’t stay there.

As vegetarians we were a bit nervous because the menu had only one veggie main, but the innkeeper / chef Jacqui heard we were vegetarians, came over, and reeled off a selection of dishes that she could make for us based on the vegetables she had in fresh that morning. The food arrived approximately 15 mins after ordering, I had two generous slices of beef with four large beautifully crisp roast potatoes, we had a bowl of carrots, broccoli and cabbage (a bit hard for our tastes) a dish of the signature cheesey leeks and a jug of gravy. Ended up paying at the bar and leaving instead as the staff were nowhere to be found. Very disappointing, and for what the (two course!) meal cost we could have visited another of the many village pubs in the area and had a much better experience. Left feeling a bit disheartened as we've heard really good things from friends about the Chequers and thought it would be a new local haunt but unfortunately we won't be returning.

I don't usually order steak because I've had some really bad steaks out in the past , but I'd heard such good things. I wasn't disappointed at all. I had the rib eye and my friend had the sirloin. Both were amazing and cooked to perfection. I don't live locally but I will definitely make the effort to come back.

Once again had a faultless Sunday lunch at the Chequers Inn. Good well cooked food that offers value for money. Relaxing atmosphere, lovely staff and nothing is too much trouble.

Great evening well done to Jackie and Ian and everyone to helped bring last nights Garden Party to fruition. Despite some showers the entertainment and food was superb. That Pigeon and Venison Pie!! Wow. An amazing amount raised as well.

An otherwise nice evening spoilt by who I assume to be the landlord taking a completely unnecessary approach to a 45p charge levied on card transactions. Had I been aware of this prior to making a second order that fell beneath the £10 minimum I would have gladly paid. Had I also been made aware of the landlords attitude I wouldn't have visited in the first place and don't intend to in the future.

Sunday lunch at 5pm when most local places won't accommodate after 3pm! Roasts available but all 3 opted for excellent sirloin steaks, after the delicious cray fish or tomato and pepper soup.Plenty to choose from and fabulous puds. Can't understand why this one has gone under our radar for too long!

Had a lovely evening here last night. Hosts where great and very welcoming and friendly.Four of us went and we all had steaks where where lovely cooked to perfection. Only two ales on last night which was a shame but the Hobgoblin was kept very well and was a really good pint. What else can I say except we will be back, even it it is a bit of a run out, its worth it.

Booked Sunday lunch with visiting friends. Nothing more you could ask for from a pub. Good choice on menu, good beer, good service, good food all at very fair prices. It's great to see a Landlord and Landlady who obviously know their job and then do it! Will definitely be back.

Went on Mothers Day for lunch and it was great. From start to finish the food was excellent, everyone at our table (8 of us) couldn't find fault. Service was friendly and attentive without being false, it actually felt like we were drinking and eating at our local pub. I must say the roast lamb was exceptional and the Chocolate Cheesecake was HUGE and very very tasty. All of the females were given a little Mothers Day gift as was the Grandad at the table as well.Would I return...........Hell yea and next time I will be trying the steak!!!!

Had the most amazing Sunday lunch to celebrate Mothers day. The welcome from the landlord was warm and friendly who took us straight to our table, the pub and restaurant was very busy but he still had time to settle us in. Our drinks order was swiftly taken and the drinks a arrived in a couple of minuts, in fact we didn't need to leave the table to get another drink, the staff were very attentive and we're always there to take another order just as we needed it!! The food was fantastic, and there was plenty of it. Desert was incredible, especially the home made cheese cake which was made that morning, the staff were very proud to tell us about it!!! Over all the staff were great and the landlord and landlady were friendly, fun and really made my mother's mother's day.

For a pub that prides itself on its steak menu, we were extremely disappointed. The meat was poor quality, tough, fibrous and over cooked. We reported this to the land lady who was unapologetic, and quite frankly couldn't care less. In fact, 4 out of the 4 steaks that were ordered were not cooked to our order. Being relatively local to this pub, I won't be frequenting anytime soon. I much prefer the quality, service and steaks at the Lamb in Buckland.

I took my husband to this pub/restaurant for his birthday meal as he wanted steak and it was recommended to me by a friend. The prices are very reasonable, the decor is totally charming and my husband really enjoyed his steak. Unfortunately I must add that, as I don't really like steak, I ordered the partridge and, whilst it was beautifully presented, it was pretty much cremated and so dry I couldn't cut or eat it. The staff were incredibly apologetic and replaced it immediately with a lamb shank. The lamb was much better than the partridge but still not that great to be honest - it was edible though so I stuck with that. In summary - if you go here, order steak and I'm sure you will be very pleased.
