Beautiful thatched traditional pub. Went for lunch we had a roast beef and roast pork belly. Can honestly say the quality was top notch, it was beautifully cooked and the presentation was excellent, quality rather than quantity, although actually we had no room for dessert!! Wonderful pub with really efficient and friendly staff. Highly recommended.

We live locally and went because we had been told about the new Menu. The new owners have given the place a lick of paint but otherwise it is still the familiar Fullers pub. The food for dinner is a much more gastro fare now and really good. We had both the Scallop and the Beetroot starters, followed by Gnocchi and the Pork Belly for mains and had to share the chocolate delice pudding!. A really delicious meal, in this lovely country pub. We really liked what the new 'owners' are trying to do and would recommend as the chefs obviously know how to cook. The chatty staff mentioned they are doing a sort of tapas / lite bight lunch menu as well - will pop in to try at some point.

Lovely atmosphere and very friendly service. Food was good and this was close to being a four star review, but..... Unusually there were no vegetarian (or vegan) options on either the main or kids menu. There was a vegetarian option on the lunch / baguette menu and the kitchen did offer a vegan burger or nut roast but I would advise calling ahead if you have a vegetarian or vegan in your party, and especially children as the kids menu was burger/nuggets and chips, desperately lacking a pasta option! Unfortunately I think this will stop us visiting again but if you are not bothered by this, the Chequers if definitely worth a visit.

Stopped here for lunch halfway between Bath and Bedford on an October Friday. Excellent autumn vegetable soup, thick, really tasty, hot and nicely garnished. Too filling to follow with a main course but did manage a generous apricot crumble with lashings of hot custard. Very friendly staff, easy to find and plenty of parking. We will return!!

Friendly and quick service. We skipped the starter, and went straight into mains - which were excellent. My other half had the mixed grill, and I had the chicken schnitzel. Both were excellent. Cooked well, presented nicely, and most importantly, tasted great :-) The only downside (for me) was that the fried egg served with the schnitzels was sprinkled with black pepper - & I hate black pepper, however, I am being super-picky as the rest of the meal was really delicious. I really wanted a dessert, as they were so appealing, but unfortunately, just didn't have room :-D We will be returning, as I have to have one of those desserts!!

Used to visit here a lot but now under new management. Took my mother here for Sunday lunch. Our table was ready on arrival, and we were served straight away. The menu however, was not much to be desired. We had Camembert to start which was lovely but the salad was crunchy storks! My husband had prawns and only got three. Our main dinner was beef roast. I had three slices of beef three deep fried potatoes one Yorkshire and we did have extra gravy. The vegetables arrive separate but on the plate was pickled red cabbage and butternut squash purée with a stuffing ball left in it. The stuffing seems to of been bought already done. If I'd of known I wouldn't of ordered it. It was horrible! Do people really put these items together for Sunday roast? Everyone to there own but at least give people a choice. No body said about the extra pickled red cabbage and sauce. And what's with deep frying the potatoes? I can't comment on desert as we declined the afters. But the bill without drinks still came to £80 odd pounds! The cauliflower cheese was extra!!! It should be in with meal. This is a traditional village pub. Good traditional home cooking is what people want here with a little choice.

Visited for lunch today. Service was shocking most of the time we were there both the girls behind the bar were in the kitchen, laughing and joking loud enough for the whole pub to hear which was busy the whole time we were there. There was NO sandwich menu, so we chose a burger each. We were told they would take about 25 minutes to cook as they were done from scratch. When it finally arrived it was definitely NOT worth what they charged. It was in a brioche bun with sliced tomato that made the bread soggy. The burger was half the size of the bun but twice as thick, not seasoned at all and very dry and hard. Chips were more than twice cooked, they looked like they were cooked let cool then cooked again from cold, horrible. When they cleared they asked if all ok, I said not really, she didn't respond. We asked for the bill, as we had waited over 10 minutes for them to come to the table so we could pay, we eventually went to the bar as they were messing about and not taking any notice of customers. Other customers were having to go to the kitchen to get the staff as they weren't around. Will not be going again under current management!!!

My wife and daughter had a day out at the nearby Manoir au Quat'Saisons. I was at a loose end for a few hours and justwanted a nice plate of pub good and a glass of wine - nothing special. The outside of the Chequers looked inviting, but it was down hill all the way after that. The wine was expensive, maybe that's Oxfordshire prices? The guy behind the bar showed no real interest. The menu gave a choice of mushy or garden peas with the fish and chips but he failed to ask which I wanted. when the food came the fish was really greasy/oily, quite small and watery. The chips were OK, but a small portion. When the member of staff came to collect the plate he did not ask whether I had enjoyed the food. On leaving I went to the bar to check the price on the menu he did not say goodbye. Finally, they had some newspapers for customers to read but they were all Sundays, ie two days old. Overall dreadful, and there was really no need for it to be such a very poor experience.

When I saw the Chequers which is just off the Oxfordshire Way, I was rather pleased it was open even though it is undergoing renovation, mainly in my view a new thatched roof. Still the pint of Fullers London Pride was well worth the price paid although being from the North West of England, am not used to paying so much for a pint. This pub is well suited to travellers on both the A34 and the M40 at Junction 9.From each of these roads follow signs to Middleton Stoney at mini roundabout turn left signed Bicester. The chequers is on your right hand side. Parking for disabled two spaces just off road. Also large car Park and beer garden. We had booked and were welcomed by friendly staff and shown to a reserved table. I am on crutches and our drinks were taken to the table without being asked. We had come out for the evening to have just one course but seeing Whitebait, a favourite of ours, we decided to split a starter between us. The portion that arrived looked as though we had been given a "double". It was excellent whitebait, well cooked in batter. When asked the waitress confirmed that it was a single portion! For main course my wife had, from the specials, chicken breast stuffed with risotto which she enjoyed very much. I chose the ham egg and chips and this too was an excellent choice. Neither of us had any room for a desert. In summary an attractive pub, easy to find, disabled parking spaces, large car park and beer garden, serving large portions off a good menu. Friendly staff.

Popped in whilst staying at the wonderful Merton Grounds. Arrived quite late on a Friday evening and didn't want to travel too far for some dinner. Fairly quiet, more of a restaurant than a pub. Decent menu, reasonable prices and nice food. Would go back. Drinks prices a bit steep, £4.20 a pint of lager - I pay less in central London!

Good for an early evening meal. Fresh home cooked food, I wish we had room to try pudding. Value for money

We stopped here for dinner having been stuck on the a34 for a very long time with a 3 year old and a baby and having rung my dad to google somewhere close by. The food was lovely and the service friendly. We managed to leave my daughter's shoes there but after a quick phone call they are posting them out to us - great service! We'll definitely go back but hopefully in better circumstances.

My friend and I meet here on a regular basis as it's halfway between our homes. We're known to the staff as their 'Essex Girls' although we're not, but it's the friendly and welcoming team that we have come to know which along with the great food brings us back time and time again. My friend celebrated Mother's day and her 50th birthday here and nothing was too much trouble. The pub was extremely busy, but the standard of food continued to be high.Would definately recommend!

We stumbled across this pub yesterday on our way home from a visit to Bicester Outlet Centre. We're not from anywhere near the area so we were driving around a bit aimlessly! The pub looked like a proper English country pub so we ventured there for dinner. We were not disappointed! Dried hops hanging all around the inside. Very friendly service, nicely busy with locals and I suspect, like us, some not local. And I had a very nice glass of Merlot! The garden was still in full sun when we arrived and had it been a slightly warmer evening we might have enjoyed a drink in the garden first. Ordered our food which arrived timeously.I have to say the food was truly excellent. I had the chicken stuffed with lemon & Thyme risotto wrapped in bacon with dauphinoise potato mushroom sauce and vegetables. The flavours were beautiful. It really was of very good restaurant quality! I'm only sorry we live too far away to likely visit again but should we ever be that way again I would certainly return to this pub. I thoroughly recommend it!

Fullers is generally pretty good ensuring its pubs are up to scratch, and this was no exception. The menu is varied, covering traditional pub food (fish and chips, ham egg and chips and burgers), as well as more ambitious fare, and (a new addition in the last few days), tapas. We stuck to the traditional menu: the burgers were tasty, and the fish and chips and welsh rarebit pretty good. The service was friendly although slightly chaotic (they lost our bill and we had to remember what we ordered). The woodburning stove was roaring and very welcome on a chilly day.The only downside was that the table we sat at initially was disconcertingly sticky. The table next to it was free, and that was fine.

A warm, well maintained, clean and friendly tavern offering excellent meals and deserts. We enjoyed our dinner and the atmosphere was very comfortable.

My husband, daughter and I were visiting friends for a week in Shipston and this place became our second home. The building is really lovely- traditional and with a very pretty bar which is really cozy... perfect for dogs, kids and anyone wanting a good chat and a great pint (fab selection of ales and lagers). We loved the sofa in the corner for playing cards. I imagine it's super lovely when the fire is lit in winter. It's the garden that we loved most though.. there's a natural wig wam tree thing with kids stuff in so perfect for little ones. Lots of tables with an uninterrupted view of the rolling hills. They don't 'do' food but have a wood fired pizza oven that comes once every month and it was amazing! I think they have a similar thing with local fish and chips too. We were also there on 'sharing night' when the locals all bring in stuff like cheese and home made bread to share on the bar. All in all, this was a fantastic pub with great staff, a beautiful garden and a really charming, cozy bar. We will be back!

A great pub with one of the best burgers we’ve ever had! Stopped by twice within a short trip to the countryside.

Despite the opening hours quoted, and displayed at the pub, it was closed Thursday lunchtime. No idea what the actual hours are?

Pre booked in advance the Christmas dinner, unfortunately,it did not live up to anything I was expecting. The food was not hot,and grossly overpriced, very disappointing as the staff were pleasant enough. Will not be going back there for food again,I suggest you do not go there, left deflated .Ruined my Christmas with my daughter...Shame,go elsewhere in future.
