The Chequers Inn in Stratford-on-Avon

A lovely menus and excellent food. We chose small plates for our lunch get together and it was a delicious meal. The staff are very pleasant and did not rush us out even though we hung around for a while chatting!! Thanks to them for making it a lovely experience.

Seemed great for drinkers as the bar was full but the restaurant was empty on a saturday night and was totally overpriced and they hugely underdelivered!! Ordered two steaks, came with a small basket of chips, half a fried tomato and less than a quarter of a mushroom sprinkled on top of the tomato. No veg, no frills and at £27.50 each. Sauces were extra! As soon as the plates were taken away, the waitress suddenly appeared with a printed bill even though we still had full glasses of wine. 5 minutes later came back with the card machine and asked if we were ready to pay. NO customer skills at all. Will not be revisiting again

We had a fantastic experience for lunch with family. We ordered the chicken and ham hock pie which was delicious. The homemade pastry especially tasty and all a perfect portion size. We also had fish and chips which was also really good quality and value. Everyone left very happy and the service was excellent, very kind and attentive. We sat in the garden which was lovely in the sunshine and we look forward to visiting again in the future!

Very reasonable price and generous portions. Rare beef was rare, likewise well done was as requested. Service prompt, friendly and efficient.

This is a really nice pub on the edge of the village of Ettington. Lovely part shaded beer garden with undercover seating when it's cool or wet. We just had a drink but saw the food coming out and it looked good (it was a Sunday). We're meeting friends here in a couple of weeks so we'll find out. I'm sure we won't be disappointed. 😁😋❤️

Lovely place with lots of seating areas and a large garden. Good was excellent ….good portions and very tasty. Well done to the chefs. Just a shame that the service was not as slick. We had to ask for several things and the staff seemed to spend a lot of time chatting with each other by the bar instead of checking the tables. Needs a good manager to sort that out!

Good beer,nice food and service with a nice outside seating area

When we went for drinks last week, we were met with quite possibly the rudest barman ever - no hello, no please's, no thank you's during the whole transaction - just a grumpy face and a very bad attitude. We asked for gin and tonics - we were told there were "no glasses". It's a pub... Maybe if the tables had been cleared of all the empty glasses and plates that were sitting there with congealed food on as we walked in (they were still there when we left 90 mins later) - you'd have some clean glasses! The pub wasn't busy - plenty of staff on - empty restaurant with just a handful of drinkers at the bar. Oh how this pub has fallen - such a shame... there were 8 of us and we all agreed that we won't return.

The monkfish Thai curry was missing Thai spices...no lemongrass. The middle eastern lamb needed a spoon and was missing spice. It tasted of rosemary. The coffee cups are really small. The pie is actually a pasty, but it is nice. Generally overpriced mediocre food.

Had a few visits here, including a couple of fantastic Sunday lunches. Staff are welcoming. Highly recommended

Very quiet so not much atmosphere but I couldn't fault the food. Excellent burger and steak. Both well presented and hot.

The food was of high quality and tasted great. Staff were friendly and helpful. A bit noisy due to sound echoing round the room so hard to have a conversation at times but that can be said about a lot of pubs/restaurants

We fancied trying somewhere different so booked a table for 2 which wasn't a problem. We have never dined here before but wanted to after having drinks previously - it's a pleasant pub and the outside area looks great so one to try when/if the weather improves! After arriving early we had a drink in the bar and then taken to our table. This was against a wall so a bit pushed for space, especially with people walking past. It wasn't busy so would have been nice to sit elsewhere. I was impressed with the menu - lots of choice - and different! I settled for the trio of sausage rolls - very good. My partners starter was also very good. For main I went with the venison pie - glad I did as one of the best pies I have had. My partner had steak - very tender and tasty - no need for a steak knife. The food was seasoned very well and no need to add any salt or pepper. We decided to share the cheesecake and again, very tasty. The service was good although at the end we had to go to the bar to request the bill as think some of the waitresses had finished working. Overall an excellent meal and look forward to dining in the garden when the weather improves.

On a cold night we took the occasion to have dinner at The Chequers Inn Ettington. We were greeted by young bar staff. Ordered dinner of the specials board. I had beef pie with Kale and a potatoe something or other. My friend had The Lasagne. The pie was small and overcooked, The Kale was very Peppery and was Rubbery, the potatoe was a rectangular slab that was so hard my knife wouldnt cut it. For the Lasagne my friend left a third as it wasn't very nice. For the price I would give the meal 2 out of ten The staff 8 so I doubt whether I shall be going back very soon. Its a pity because it is a countryside pub with a lot going for it.

Our third visit to celebrate with friends. As lovely as the previous two visits. Booking is easy and responsive, service is excellent, food is great and plentiful, and the dogs were thoroughly spoilt. Happy adults, teenagers and dogs on a wet and miserable Sunday afternoon... what more could you ask for. Thank you!

We were staying nearby and drove through Ettington and saw The Chequers and thought we’d book for dinner. The menu was small and fresh and had some really unique options such as the smoked duck starter and the tandoori Guinea fowl main. We ended up having 3 courses as everything was interesting and delicious! A lovely local pub with nice atmosphere

Lovely pub, really nice decor. Met there for a Wednesday business lunch and the service and food were very good. It was quiet, so difficult to comment on the atmosphere but, regardless, a nice place to meet half way. Would do do again.

Sunday lunch was approximately the same price as other places. Roast Chicken £17.95. The disappointment was the use of frozen vegetables with fresh. I would go back but would have to try the normal menu. Certainly not a patch on our usual Sunday dinner elsewhere.

We arrived family heavy with 7 adults and 5 lively children to be warmly welcomed and treated to sumptuous food. Thoroughly recommend their hospitality and service.

Never been here before came upon it by chance and thought we’d stop for lunch. So glad we did. The service is exceptional and the food is wonderful. Cooked and presented brilliantly. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff. The bar is decorated really lovely and everywhere was so clean. Even the entry from the car park to the restaurant is amazing the garden is set out beautifully. Thanks for a lovely visit we will return

Very nice roast on Sunday. Beef is cooked a little rare for my liking but there was plenty of it and the service was impeccable.

We have been been to this inn to eat numerous times. Last night I enjoyed an excellent meal. It seems they had a new menu. For starters i thoroughly enjoyed Korean pancakes and for the main course the slow roast belly pork was delicious. Congratulations to the chef.

Looks good. Drinks expensive. Takes long time to be served at the bar even though only 2 custs waiting. serves who they know 1st rather than 1st come 1st served. Happens every time.

The place itself is lovely with a good selection of drinks. The food however is abysmal. My starter was bland and made by someone with no concept of flavour or ingredients. Same goes for the main it was a tasteless piece of frozen hake served on a mashed up baked potato with a few capers and spring onions mixed in. £17!!! Unfortunately as you can see from the good reviews this seems to be the standard of food that we think is acceptable in this country. Minimal effort maximum prices. No pride.

We had Sunday lunch on Fathers Day and overall food and service was great. However, my daughter had the child’s roast chicken dinner and I asked if she could have some pigs in blankets as an extra as they aren’t included on the children’s portion, to which the waitress said “er yes but there will be an extra charge” I said it was fine! When I got the bill I was then charged £2.50 for 2 tiny sausages wrapped in a tiny piece of bacon, which I think was outrageous, I understand places are struggling at the moment, but don’t feel it was necessary to charge £2.50 extra on a Sunday lunch! Also, they need to serve a better selection of vegetables as we had green cabbage, courgettes and carrots and there wasn’t any other options such as cauliflower cheese and etc and definitely need more gravy, or at least have an extra jug of gravy brought out with the lunches. Food tasted great and presentation was lovely, waitress who went to Shipston High was a credit to the pub as chatted to our daughter about the school etc, just a couple of things that let it down.

We stopped here for a quick lunch as it seemed quite smart. The welcome was ok but the food was average and somewhat overpriced. Batter on my fish was undercooked.

Family lunch to celebrate a big upcoming birthday and a wedding anniversary. Very happy to have well behaved dog with us. Food was really good, excellent choices and ample proportions. Very happy occasion made even better by being within walking distance!

We were visiting the area and booked a meal here for six people. All the staff were super friendly. The food was good quality and reasonably priced. It was a late dinner & I think they kept the kitchen open a little bit later for us so we could have desserts.

Fish and chips tastes frozen. Gluten free halloumi, portion too small. Pizza tastes frozen. Steak was passable. Not sure why other reviews are so positive, maybe business was taken over recently.

Booked in at 1pm, starter arrived quit quickly, but had to go to the bar to get more drinks , as no waiting staff came back to clear starter plates or ask if all OK . Mains arrived 1:20 hr from being seated. Food was excellent, but waiting staff not focused on customers.

Booked to have a Sunday lunch while staying in the area on holiday. The beef was cooked to perfection, and so were the roasties and veg. Friendly and speedy service.

Worst meal I've endured in a long time. Vegans: don't bother. They have one vegan option and it is totally awful. Completely tasteless risotto that arrived overcooked, cold and in a tiny portion. No seasoning, no sides, absolutely no flavour. If I was paying I would have sent it back and left, but I was part of a work group so was obliged to stay. Obviously the chef doesn't care about food, it's really not very difficult to create tasty, filling simple vegan meals. I will avoid at all costs. On a plus note, the service staff were great.

I would give our meals 0 out of 5, but the 2 star review is because it's a nice place, the staff were excellent and most other meals (non-veggie/vegan) looked great. If you are a vegan, don't come here. If you're vegetarian, consider it if there's no other option. The only vegan option was a small portion of overcooked, cold, completely tasteless risotto. It was embarrassingly poor, but the chips we ordered to fill us up were fine. The side veggies were overcooked unfortunately. Shame, it could do so much better.

Sunday lunch; avoid. The beef was chewey and they do not know how to roast potatoes, my grandson could do it better, how difficult is it to roast potatoes properly for a crispy golden "skin" and have them cooked on the inside.

Ate here with friends, kids and three dogs today. Delicious roast (can highly recommend the sticky toffee pudding!). As good as it was back in March. Booking online worked well and staff were really responsive to email enquiries. A lovely way to kick start Christmas....

Such a wonderful atmosphere, lovely decor and even nicer food! The staff were delightful as always, special mention to a Paul and Amy for being so warming, they are a credit to themselves, I’d recommend Amy as your server for Guinness, she always does a beautiful shamrock :) can’t wait till the next chequers engraver! Would 11/10 recommend!

The Chequers came highly recommended and did not disappoint. It is one of the better gastro pubs in Warwickshire. Worth a visit if you are in the area.

Nice place, outside area looked nice too, i can imagine it's lovely in the evening with all the lights, had some pods and covered areas too. We turned up as a party of 8 and they managed to seat us straight away, the service was good, efficient and friendly, good quality food across the board , between us we had a selection of starters, main meals and children's food. Dog friendly, would definitely go back.

It would be better if they had a separate bar for the garden area as it is not nice having to mix with some of the types in the current bar area. I will spend my money elsewhere until then.

Disappointing having to even leave less than 5 stars, the venue is lovely and the staff were very friendly and inviting. However, after waiting for an extended length of time without being served our food or offered another drink inquired to be informed the order had not been placed. We paid for our drinks and left. Maybe an up to date electronic ordering system could have avoided this, I now have one hangry partner.

We were not planning to stop on a day out, so we had no booking, thay accommodated us, we had pizza, chicken sandwiches and fish sandwiches and it was all delicious, service was great and the staff friendly, we will be returning next time we are passing through.

Just had a fabulous Sunday lunch at The Chequers. We were served by really cheerful and friendly staff. The food is freshly cooked and hot. The servings are very generous.

Food good but a little bit expensive . £23 for a steak and £1.50 EXTRA for a pepper corn sauce . Burger and chips £16 . Would look for a different venue when next in the area
