The Chequers Hotel Maresfield in Wealden

Ordered steak, which was inedible, all gristle with salty chips. No atmosphere in an empty pub. Service so disappointing. No refund offered. Will not return there.

Pop in here for lunch they were not busy the staff were nice and polite. Ordered from the menu but the two items we wanted they were not doing that day, so both had the Lamb Shank these where really nice with a good sauce and vegetables , had a nice meal with good service

Firstly the positives, the room was lovely the dinner and breakfast was very tasty and everything was to a high standard. Negatives and I don't like doing this but it was playing on my mind a little, the feeling I got from the staff was they didn't really want to be there, everything seemed rushed as though they just wanted to go home, at 9pm I was told they couldn't serve a coffee because the coffee machine had been turned off... Really at 9pm!!! We then came back through and asked if we could sit by the bar in the seated area and the girl looked absolutely horrified that we wanted to and how dare we.... Breakfast everything was great just rushed service again not feeling very welcoming, no good morning from any of the staff, they were all very young and personally I felt and maybe they weren't very happy. Otherwise great

Arrived at 7:45 after checking the website to confirm they were open and doing food. Arrived and grumpy woman said they weren’t doing food and website was wrong. They had to prioritise guests and not doing food. Had a drink and crisps as had driven around looking for food. Table next to us ordered their pudding with waitress service. Went back to bar and showed my phone with website times and grumpy younger barmaid said “yeah we will change the website”. Terrible attitude and don’t know why people like this work with the public. If you’re that grumpy get another job as you’re being down the brand and the local pub name which has a good reputation when I lived in the village. Shocking customer service and deciding when they’ll open and close. Very sad especially when you’ve a child with you who is hungry.

Breakfast and dinner were fine. Friendly service. Enough parking places. The room was small but ok. Only our bathroom needed renovation.

Firstly, I do not see how this place has quite a low score. I am guessing it must be historical as we have been a couple of times and it was excellent. Quaint little "snug" type bar at the front with more usual rooms the other side and behind. Through to a decked seating area - or if you prefer, a grassy area with about 12 large tables in it. Lots of sunshades as well. Plenty of parking. Both the food and drink are very competitively priced, but not skimping on quality. Service very personable and our lunches arrived promptly. All food made to order so lovely crispy hot fries, not like some places that keep them warm for hours. Being able to order 2 large wines and 2 lunches for £40, in such a nice setting, is very good value.

This is the third time we have stayed here. Rumy greeted us when we arrived and remembered us from the last few times with we really appreciated. And Martin and the rest of the team made us feel welcome. We will be back very soon

The pub was in a beautiful setting with great views and had a good sized beer garden. The staff were really approachable on our arrival and throughout the meals we ate at the pub. We stayed in the rooms overnight, which were clean and well appointed, the food was great quality and reasonably priced with a good variety.

It's always a pleasure to visit the chequers. Rumy the manager is very pleasant and accommodating, with a fine team of capable friendly staff and great coffee. I'm always made to feel welcome and they make me feel like a priority. And what a lovely building.

Came as a group of Nine friends. Absolutely awesome experience, from the minute we arrived. Excellent service, polite friendly efficient staff and service throughout our time there. Had the ravioli for starters followed by the most moist and delicious Cajun Chicken Burger. Drink prices very reasonable. Would highly recommend.

Weren’t sure how the food would be as remembered years ago the chequers not having a great reputation however I’m pleased to confirm that both the food and service were fantastic and great value for money. Will be back.

The food is now SO much better so don’t be put off by earlier reviews. Really friendly pub, lovely staff who remembered our dog’s birthday and celebrated it! Pub quiz is really fun!

We took advantage of Green King's very generous Sunday night stay offer to enjoy an overnight stay at The Chequers Inn as a base to visit two National Trust houses, Chartwell and Bateman's. The pub was very well kept and a really relaxing place to stay. Our bedroom was a very good size well-appointed and spotless, the staff were friendly and welcoming and both our evening meal and the generous breakfast suited us perfectly. I would definitely recommend this as a place to stay

Went out to enjoy a quiet evening meal with my girlfriend and was greeted with a warm welcome at the door. Food was amazing as usual and service was quick and friendly, would definitely visit again.

Had a very warm welcome here, good food recommended from our lovely waitress Carrie-Ann. We both had a delicious hot meal and was made to feel special. After truly disastrous visits to this then famously awful Greene King pub in May 2015 and Oct 2017, my wife and I recently called in for a drink to note that it was unusually full of customers. So, as it is our nearest mid-priced chain pub venue, we decided to see whether it had raised its game, enabling us to make a positive review. The answer to this was 'yes and no'. The good news is good, very palatable food in place of the awful slop that it had dished up on our previous visits. The bad news is appalling service. We waited half an hour for the table to be cleared of our starter plates despite that ours was only one of two active tables. We then chased up the bar to find all three serving staff sitting there whilst deeply engaged in an obviously long conversation. We then suffered another long wait while they fired up the kitchen to produce our obviously forgotten main courses. Goodness only knows how they cope when the restaurant is busy. So, maybe we'll wait another 7 years and try again.

We had a lovely overnight stay here, staff very welcoming and helpful. Rooms were clean and cosy. We had an evening meal and breakfast, which we cannot fault. Really enjoyed our weekend, would definitely stay again.

We had 3 nights here in December while visiting friends. Reception was welcome and personal and the staff where absolutely top class. Food menu a bit tired. Perfect location and a must on the visit list.

We stayed 2 nights at the Chequers Inn just before Christmas. It was charming and feeling really festive. Our room looked beautiful and was really spacious. Staff were friendly and we enjoyed our breakfast and had a good quality meal one night, followed by a free festive film in one of the reception rooms.

I’ve been using this pub for many years, always very good from a food point of view. However, unfortunately it not as good as use to be now mediocre at best. Don’t get me wrong it’s edibles but nothing special and nowhere near as good as it use to be, say pre-Covid. Steak quality poor chewy and very thin, scrambled eggs microwaved and over cooked, simple things that easily be improved with better quality ingredients and a change of cooking style.

Our stay at this hotel was ok but with a few tweaks could be so much better.The room had a large wardrobe which with the benefit of some shelves would have been perfect. The bathroom needed a complete overall . The bath was so large the door was difficult to close. The over bath shower was tiny and the toilet was at an angle to fit in the space. The biggest issue was no towel rail or hooks so where do you put damp towels? The staff in the restaurant are very friendly and the food is good. However several times we ( and others ) did not receive the correct meal and if you asked for something like water, vinegar or hot water you would be lucky to get it without asking at least twice . The staff seem easily distracted by the radio system they use.

We spent 3 nights at the Chequers whilst visiting the family in East Sussex and I would recommend it as a great place to stay. We had a massive room with oak panelling, sofa and fireplace! The staff were friendly and attentive and the food good so overall 9 out of 10 and would definitely stay again.

Stay here often on business. Always very welcoming. Straightforward and easy check in check out. Make you feel valued. Food could be better quality especially breakfast. It’s the product not the cooking that needs improving. Overall a good place to stay.
