We went for a carvery at the weekend. Our first visit since it has been taken over and the new owners are clearly doing a great job, so welcoming and friendly. Absolutely delicious carvery, so so much better than other carvery places locally. We are already booked to go again

I was ‘not even asked how the second one was , probably because most of it was still on my plate! Was given a free dessert as compensation which didn’t really cut it as myself and my partner had to eat separately! Will definitely not return!

Having visited tonight 1st April 2025, they had their monthly car meet, the place was busy, and buzzing. We went in and found a table by the window which needed cleaning, as the people before us had just left and my son wanted to see the cars, the young waitress came straight over and with no hassle cleaned and laid fresh cutlery, we looked over the menu which has a very good choice of foods, and then ordered at the bar myself and son had Steak and Ale pie (which is amazing) husband and daughter had loaded fries with pulled pork which they enjoyed.... We usually have their amazing carvery but we all fancied a change... The restaurant is clean and well presented. Staff are friendly and approachable.... It's definitely turned around and better with the new owners who put on good entertainment evenings, the monthly car meet has to be one of the best evenings. We've been visiting since 2015 and can't say we've ever had a bad meal but over time our experience has only got better, and we've seen so many lovely changes to decor and menus.. Oli and the team always make us feel welcome. 🌟😊🌟

I’m writing this review to express my extreme disappointment with the experience my party had at The Holly Blue on 22/03/2025. We were a group of five, with three of us ordering the carvery and two opting for burgers, and unfortunately, our visit was marred by a series of issues that severely impacted our experience. Upon arrival, we were greeted by an assistant manager who seated us. However, when we went to the bar to order, we found the carvery food to be unappetizing, with dry vegetables that were stuck to the cast iron dishes. The peas, in particular, were so dry they had turned white. We raised this concern with the assistant manager, who seemed more interested in checking with the chef about whether they should be refreshed rather than addressing the issue directly. Despite assurances that fresh vegetables would be brought out, we were disappointed to see dirty lids being used and mismatched lids placed on dishes, which raised significant hygiene and allergy concerns. When our carveries arrived, they were barely edible. The vegetables were mostly dry or overcooked, the stuffing was so hard it could have been used as building material, and the mashed potatoes were crusted from sitting out too long. Worse still, we were given only a single thin slice of meat, and the chef placed old, dry cuttings on the plate with it. The cauliflower cheese was welded to the edge of the dish, with only two pieces of cauliflower, and the whole presentation was appalling. The burgers we ordered also left much to be desired. The bacon that was supposed to be ‘crispy’ was anything but, and completely inedible. Additionally, the drinks we ordered, a lemonade and Pepsi, were flat, and the Pepsi didn’t even have ice. When we expressed our concerns, the assistant manager’s response was dismissive and unprofessional. He claimed that the portion of meat we received was bigger than it appeared, and when we asked to speak with another manager, we encountered a combative attitude. The female assistant manager insisted the portion size was “standard” and belittled our concerns. Her response to the state of the food was, “You can see there’s a full main menu there, you should’ve just ordered off of that,” which was completely unacceptable. The lack of professionalism and customer care was shocking. When we asked for a complaints email, both managers rolled their eyes and dismissed us, with one even acknowledging, “Yes, you have” when we remarked that we essentially made a donation for food we couldn’t eat. Sadly, we weren’t the only ones dissatisfied – we overheard another customer commenting on the poor state of the food, though she was too nervous to say anything due to the way we were treated. What stood out positively in an otherwise dreadful experience was Kara, the young girl who cleared our plates. She was polite and professional, a welcome contrast to the rest of the team. Considering the cost of the meals (£10.99 for the carvery, £15 for the burger), the quality of both the food and the service was unacceptable. This visit was a huge disappointment, and based on the poor service and quality we experienced – coupled with the clear pattern of complaints I’ve seen in recent reviews – I would not recommend The Holly Blue to anyone. I truly hope this review will prompt an investigation into the current management and the quality control of the food served, as this experience was completely unacceptable.

A really disappointing visit. The carvery was far below standard, turkey was undercooked, very poor selection of Vegetables, and asking if they were going to be topped up the answer was - we don’t have any more. So 1/2 the family had eaten, as they hadn’t ordered a carvery, and by the time a complaint was made and ordered off the menu the others had eaten. Unfortunately eaten here many times with no issues, shrugging off the negative reviews on Facebook, now I think they have gone downhill. A really bad experience one I don’t think they can recover from. I’m sorry it’s a recommendation NOT to visit here.

I am very disappointed with my experience at holly blue. I thought it would be a lovely meal out, no one came up and greeted us, once seated we ordered on the app. Starters took around 30 it wasn’t busy so I was confused as to why it took a while to come out, no one did check backs and when we were handed our food it was shocking ordered a hunters chicken if you could call it that. There was about 9 chips on our plate a half black tomato, the bacon was burnt, the chicken had an odd taste and was a bit of an odd yellow colour like if it had be left out or gone a bit off. so I ended up leaving that I couldn’t eat it I usually try with these things but couldn’t stomach it at all. Had no bbq sauce or cheese was so dry and felt odd to eat. Left half of the meal. Honestly wanted a refund but staff weren’t welcoming at all, didn’t check back at all. Didn’t really speak to us. So we just ended up leaving.

Me and my wife came here as we thought it would be a nice meal out, sadly I was very disappointed. No one came and greeted us at the door so we went up to the bar, there was no signage to say where to go to be seated, once seated we decided to order food and drink on the app. The drinks were nice I admit, the sex on the beach cocktail was good, nothing special, but good. I ordered cheese bites as a starter and the hunters chicken as a main. The starter took about 25 minutes to come out, it didn’t seem busy so I was confused as to why it took that long but we didn’t mind too much when it came to the wait for the starters, once the starters had arrived I thought the cheese bites weren’t great value for money but they were alright, for around £5/£6 I expected better than four tiny cheese balls, no one did a check back on the starters. When it came to the mains my wife and I were waiting over an hour for them to come out, once again we were confused as it didn’t seem busy and no staff bothered with us. Once the hunters chicken had arrived I was shocked, absolutely shocked. So there was a few chips on the plate, the tomato was purely burnt black on 90% of it, the chicken had overdone burnt bacon on, no sauce at all on the chicken and it was an odd colour and texture, I ate the chips, took a bite of an onion ring and left the rest as it was overly greasy, left the burnt tomato, took the bacon off and left it, attempted to eat the chicken but left most of it, I tried adding bbq sauce to the side to see if that would help but there was no helping it, for roughly £15 I expected at least decent food. During this whole time not a single person came to do a check back on us, I don’t understand why as I saw them doing check backs on other tables. We were going to order desserts but after that whole experience decided not to, we were going to ask for a refund or something with the main meals but honestly we didn’t feel welcomed at all and if anything felt slightly uncomfortable with the lack of care from the staff so we left our food on the table and left the restaurant as soon as our taxi arrived. Putting it simply, the whole experience was shocking. I have attached pictures of the food I left from my main meal.

We had a very disappointing experience at Holly Blue. As a pre-booked party of 13, including young children, we waited **1 hour 45 minutes** for our food on a Wednesday evening. The restaurant was empty, yet we were not informed of any delays until we complained. Several menu items were out of stock, and when the food finally arrived, some items were missing. While the staff were polite and kind (and we appreciate their efforts), it’s clear there were significant issues with **communication** and the **front-of-house team**. Some of our group felt the problems likely stemmed from poor coordination between the kitchen and front-of-house staff. To their credit, some missing items were refunded, and the staff handled the situation professionally. However, the overall experience was poor. Waiting so long in an empty restaurant with young children was embarrassing and frustrating. Unfortunately, we will not be returning.

Went for Sunday carvery. Very disappointing. They cram in twice as many covers as the kitchen and dining area can cope with. I felt particularly sorry for the people trying to have a civilised meal whilst surrounded by the huge queue for food. When we reached the carvery there was little to reward the wait. Dried out scrag ends of meat, hockey puck stuffing and mediocre veg. Nasty gravy. Avoid.

Waited 50 minutes for food. Ordered mixed grill and asked for steak to be medium rare. Came out cremated. Sausages burnt. Chicken dry. Asked for steak to be changed and whole plate taken away and another 20 minute wait !! Such a shame as staff are young but try their best and I want to really like the place and go there but today has totally put me off. A real shame as clearly a lot of effort has gone in since the take over but think when it's busy they can't cope.

I really didn't enjoy my carvery all the meat was dry and fatty the potatoes were burnt and had been sitting there for a long time in oil, the carrots were dry and hard to chew the cauliflower was near enough raw with a cheese sauce on it as you couldn't even cut it with your knife, the leeks were over done and slighly burnt, the stuffing was hard and I felt really disappointed as the standards have really gone down. The puddings you could tell were shop bought and warmed up. When the previous owners run it everything was refreshed all the time on the carvery and there were freshly made cakes in a fridge to choose from which you got with fresh cream or Custard it's a shame because I used to love coming and now I don't want to return. The only good thing was the staff were friendly and helpful when they served you. Thankyou.

Had lunch here with two friends. We had booked a table (Saturday lunchtime) but no need as the place was almost empty. We were not greeted by anyone when we arrived. Eventually a member of staff emerged from the bar and told us we could sit anywhere. We found a table and were chatting for some time before realising that nobody had come to take our order. Eventually we went to the bar where we were told we had to order at the bar. We explained we had never been here before so was not aware of that but we received no apology. Nowhere was there any indication that this was the procedure and there was no number on our table to alert us to the fact that we may have to order at the bar. We all ordered the carvery. Big mistake. The meat was lukewarm. Small selection of vegetables and not enough serving spoons. Peas were floating in water but no slotted spoon to drain them. The roast potatoes were so touch we couldn't even cut them, let alone eat them. They seemed to have been left over from a previous day and reheated. The vegetables were dried up and lukewarm. Nobody bothered to come to our table to see if everything was alright. The place was very cold as there was no heating on. Very unfriendly atmosphere. Will never go there again!

The moment I walked through the doors I felt very welcome, the gentleman at the bar was so lovely. Explaining the six of glasses as I said I wanted a coke and lemonade. I actually came here on the off chance the other day, I came with my sister who is very fussy and will always do her research before. She ate there which is massive and enjoyed it. I to thoroughly enjoyed it, we both had a carvery and kids had a few different dishes, it was so yummy. We came here because we hadn’t been in a while, we had a big group of 8, 4 of us had the carvery and it was so bad! The mash potatoes was gray and tasted like smash! As for the rest of the carvery it was cold, tough and it was like it had sat there all day. The other 4 of us had meals from the menu, to be fair they was all good and nothing to moan about so we would all have had them again so top rating for them. But and it’s a big but!!!! We all ordered dessert 1 and 1/2 hours later after we had to complain about how long it was taking they finally came out! We get the time of the year but the place was not ever a quarter full! We book and got there for 13:30 but didn’t leave till gone 16:00. After all that we probably will never go back which is a shame as we did go at least 4 times a year

Food was luke warm/cold. Family of 4, 3 eating off the set xmas menu. Youngest child has Autism and sensory issues with food. Asked if he could eat the food we brought. Was told no, even though the rest of us were eating and spent over £100. There was nothing on the menu he would eat except chips. Sorry, won't be returning Edit - i have worked in the pub/food industry for a long time and have my food hygiene and health and safety certificates. Cross contamination happens in the kitchen when cooking foods. I wasn't asking anyone to cook his food. I understand your company policy and would agree with it if the rest of us where not eating. Do you stop mothers from bringing baby food?

It was quiet for our Xmas do though we may have been the first to have a big group event :) We had the festive menu. The carvery was lovely, however if veg is left on hotplate too long it can be bit hard - not sure if there's another solution to this. Some in the group were not overly enamoured with the Mac 'N' Cheese, felt it was not cheesy enough. The chips were overcooked which came wit the burger. Overall, it was a super evening, lovely venue and welcoming staff.

We booked a table for Saturday night for a family meal as we heard it was under new ownership. Needless to say we won’t be going back. They don’t offer a pay at the end tab like most restaurants, you have to go to the bar to order everything you want and pay up front. The food took over an hour to come out and half of it was cold. They even forgot to bring out two mixed grills so them family members had to wait. I ordered the mega mixed grill and not only did the waiting staff not have a clue what they was bringing out, but the steak and gammon were the smallest bits I’ve seen and the gammon was burnt to a crisp. The poor manager was trying to get his staff organised but the kitchen and waiting staff just didn’t have a clue.

Wow! Haven't visited for years but word seems to be spreading about the good food there now. A group of around 15 of us went for a Christmas lunch on 13 Dec. I was directed to a grotto with lots of lametta and twinkly lights. Most of us had the roast - the meat was tender and delicious with well cooked veggies, followed by a variety of puds that were equally yummy. Very attentive staff for whom nothing was too much trouble. A very enjoyable experience which I intend to repeat. Btw the restaurant has plenty of parking for disabled people and is fully accessible. Great festive atmosphere, lovely decorations, felt like we were in santas grotto. Lovely big prawns on the prawn cocktails Turkey was beautiful and tender and huge Yorkshire puddings. Just needed to top up vegetables as we missed out on the cauliflower cheese and sprouts. Desserts were delicious Thank you for an enjoyable festive lunch

Went to the Holly Blue a few months ago when the new owners took over, the food was fantastic but sadly going back a couple of months later not so good, I ordered hunters chicken we waited nearly an hour for our food, when we eventually got it the chicken was so dry i could hardly cut it, there was 2 miniature onion rings, half a miniature tomato and peas which were not even on the dish. Very disappointing meal.

Wow, what an amazing carvery. Hot, flavoursome and fresh. The Yorkshire puddings are to die for. Chef Callum on the carvery was helpful, friendly and polite. We will definitely be returning.

We had over an hour wait for food which wasn't ideal, but once the staff were aware of the delays, they were informing people. The attitude of the staff was quite impressive; everyone was clearly under a lot of pressure but remained calm and friendly, and worked really efficiently (we could hear the communication between some of the staff, making sure that nothing was missed). If it wasn't for the significant delay in food arriving, I'd have given the higher overall rating.

My family and I ate at the holly blue yesterday. I can really recommend it, we were made very welcome with the hostess who greeted us and found us a table For 6 despite us not having booked a table, we found all the staff very friendly and accommodating. The manager overseeing was very nice and we found the food lovely. Will be returning 👍👍

Great service, warm welcome, the food was delicious and Chef George was extremely helpful. The price is really reasonable and a very decent potion size compared to a lot of places. They have a nice outside area and child friendly. Lots of parking. Highly recommended.

Visited for a late afternoon early meal with my eldest son and my mum today. My son alway and I mean 98% of the time plumps for steak when he eats out or eats at home, however, I've never heard him comment on his food. Now he had the sirloin which in his own words was cooked to perfection. So much so he asked the chef who cooked it to be complimented. Chef Andrea who was on the carvery, brought him out and my son thanked him personally. My son is a national rugby player so eats a lot of steak. The name is chef Calum by the way! I don't think I will ever personally be able to cook a steak again without hearing chef Calum from this day onwards. Many thanks to you all. Including the young lady at the bar who's name I didnt catch. We will be back!

Amazing welcome and atmosphere the manage was very welcoming and polite exactly how a restaurant should be run we came here after the rude manager at Toby Carvery gave my table away for being 6 minutes late what a joke but we’ve found a better carvery and the kids meals are excellent sizes, me and my wife didn’t eat as we were still furious about the way we were treated at Tobys

Is it the greatest food in the planet? No, but the service is great, it's perfect for families and in terms of value for money I thought it was excellent. There was 2 adults and 2 kids, we all had mains and Dessert plus drinks and the total was less than £70. The staff were great with the kids and just very friendly and welcoming. Perfect place for a Sunday meal with the kids in tow

Very noisy, not enough staff to cope with demand . Carvery chef struggling with the number of people and maintaining veg. Gravy area depleted. Mentioned above at the bar, but they were also stretched. On arrival we were told carvery available but menu items could be up to 1 Hour wait!?!? Will try again on a different day and time!? But at present go to the Toby carvery.

Decided to go for a Sunday carvery, booked a slot a hour in advance. The meet and greet is excellent. Nice polite bar service. The carvery choice of meat and vegetables is fabulous. Perfectly cooked meat and a fine selection of fresh vegetables. Nice easy and relaxing. Go try it.

What a dissapointment. Booked tablet for 7pm our starter was served on burnt enamel oven dishes with 5 mushrooms for the breaded mushrooms starter. Waited 50 mins for the main. Mixed grill all the meat was burnt black as charcoal underneath. Hunters chicken cooked so much it could not be cut with a knife. Ended up getting our money back.

Decided to give it a go, as last time we went it was the previous owners, but reading great reviews about the new owners and great food, we thought let's try it. We walked in, I went straight to the carvery, the roast potatoes were all burnt the veg looked like it had been there all day, the meat was dry, so we decided to leave and go to the toby, which was spot on. Gutted as thought it was going to be nice, so no I won't be returning.

We went in there again almost 6 months later and it was dire. The food was so bad we didn't finish, once it was good, Unfortunately not anymore. Won't be going back.

It was our first time visiting The Holly Blue at the weekend and we couldn't fault our experience! The lovely staff gave us a warm welcome and it was clear to see how popular the pub was. Stopped by after remembrance day parade for a bite to eat. Guy at the booking in desk noticed I was a veteran and informed me veterans get a free drink on this day. He was very polite and thanked me for my service. All the other staff were also very good. As for the food, I had roast beef and it was excellent. Not a bit of fat or gristle. Far superior than Toby Carvery. .

pretty lovely pub for drinking pints of beer after hiking around the surrey hill, and chips are delicious. really enjoy my time with my friends singing songs here, all guys are good, and look forward to coming back again

Tried the Hay Waggon, which is under new ownership. Great barbecue with seafood kebabs and amazing local rump steak. Homemade ice creams are to die for. All served up in a wonderful garden
