The Chequers in South Cambridgeshire

My favourite place to visit when near Cambridge. You could not ask for a more quintessential pub experience than at Chequers in Fowlmere. Everyone here is so kind, generous, and social. Chris and Jade are the best - love me some Struan! Even visitors feel like they've been going to this pub for years and are just part of the whole crew. Can't think of a better place to celebrate a birthday with friends, have a pint with your best friend, or just enjoy some fantastic British food and drink. Can't wait to go back again!

Friendly staff , great service and tasty food

Five of us enjoyed a lovely meal at the Chequers on Wednesday this week. The food was lovely - I really enjoyed my pea soup, and the John Dory main was cooked perfectly. Ambience was good - the restaurant was full, but the service was impeccable. All the young women serving us were friendly and cheerful, and I particularly commend Daya who had an uncanny ability to 'read the room': when one of our party quietly grumbled that her dauphinoise potato tower was undercooked (not a complaint to the staff, mind) Daya overheard, and unbidden brought another helping of better cooked potatoes. My Citra beer was delicious, and our two wines - a red and a white (both the cheapest on the menu) were entirely acceptable. Everything about our experience at The Chequers was excellent.

Stopped here on a Saturday afternoon for lunch while cycling through the village. The other clientele appreciated no disruptive toddler on this trip.

I had dinner here with a friend and was really pleased. The food and service were both faultless. We had reserved a table, and our names were written in scrabble blocks on the table, which was a really nice touch. I would definitely recommend a visit here

Fantastic pub run exceptionally well. Staff are brilliant. Beautiful pub inside and the food was perfect. I hope it stays this way, looking forward to next time.

Recommended by someone on our campsite,said good traditional pub with good food. Just wanted a decent meal served on a plate. Came on a small board in small portions. Maybe it's me but nearly everywhere has tried to go up market as to give you less and charge more. The burger I had looked nice but no taste,daughter said pizza from aldi tasted better. Each to their own,but I won't be going back. Just my option

So lucky to have this as my local pub. The service is consistently excellent, the food equally consistently great. Always a good selection of local and non local ales, wines and great selection of spirits.

Lovely accomodating staff, nice atmosphere and great food! Very helpful when I took my grandad and toddler in for lunch.

This place is lovely. Community driven, in a lovely location and I cannot fault the staff, they are so helpful, kind and friendly and provide such a good service. The food is also brilliant and even catered extremely well for a friend who is vegan. They have a whole menu just for vegans. Love this place. Have been many times now.

One of the best pubs and restaurants anywhere! Been visiting here ever since Chris and Jade took it over! You can go for a drink, drinks and snacks or a three-course meal. Always a great choice of beers and the “Tapas” is excellent. Great decor, atmosphere and garden. Staff and service are exceptional. Sunday lunch ia also 10/10. No fruit machines or TV!

A very good pub experience with friendly staff, good beer and excellent, tasty food. Books and games on hand and a large outdoor seating area.

My Wife & I had been thinking of booking the Chequers for ages. Setting rustic/charming. Food enjoyed by us both,beer & wine tasty. Service warm/welcoming, efficient . All in all a very pleasant experience. Will book again

We have visited The Chequers as a family many times. The pub caters perfectly for Coeliac disease with a wide variety of gluten free options and alternatives to the standard menu. My Mum is never disappointed. On this occasion, we booked for my Mum’s Birthday and what a treat it was. A small gesture at the end of the meal made the day when the waiting staff sang Happy Birthday. I’ve put special occasion instructions on many bookings elsewhere and nothing extra is offered or any effort made, so to be surprised with a chorus and a candle brought smiles all round the table. Thank you. Our waitress throughout was outstanding. Her attention and attentiveness to the table is some of the best I’ve experienced even from higher end Michelin restaurants. She isn’t alone as the interaction and friendliness of all staff we came across was second to none. You’re doing it right and we’ll be back.

I would recommended this pub friendly staff and nice ales their food is out of this world I tried their steak and ale pie on the 02/08/2024 people should try their food I would highly recommend here for food it is the best friendly atmosphere staff are brilliant thank you to the staff for looking after me I have not tested their rooms but I am sure their rooms are brilliant as well

Managed to get a seat in the front of the pub rather than in the many other rooms upstairs and outside or in the Conservatory. Went for late Sunday lunch and wasn't disappointed with the quality or quantity for the price. Will be back again soon.

We were there for a birthday meal. The service was great and the food was delicious. Highly recommended though it's wise to book as it's busy.

Had a lovely family meal in the sunshine after an excellent day at Duxford IWM. I do enjoy trying different real ales and they had 3 (new to me) on the bar - Great start. The beer garden at the back was well laid out, plenty of space and a choice of different areas depending on your group and what you fancied. The menu had a good choice of meals as well as a kids menu. The food was excellent, the beer was great and the service was spot on. Next time we visit Duxford we will be back to sample some more delicious food and try some more beers. Thanks to all the staff you gave us a relaxing end to a busy day.

Fantastic pub. Service was friendly and instantaneous. Food came quickly and was generous, freshly cooked and very good. I just wish this pub was closer to my home so I could visit regularly.

As good a pub Sunday lunch as I can remember. They do everything well. Friendly, welcoming but very efficient staff who are happy to adjust the pace of our meal to suit us. A tardis like venue with lots of space in a variety of cosy settings that never felt crowded even though they were busy. Truly excellent food prepared by people who clearly know what they are doing and do it to a very high standard - it takes skill to do apparently simple things really well. Could not recommend a place more and am looking forward to trying their tapas menu on another occasion.

Just home from another super delicious lunch at the Chequers. Today we were treated to a bowl brumming with giant prawn, crevettes, musclés & scallops. Dad had Eaton Mess for pudding whilst I could only manage a scoop of icecream. The staff, ambiance, quality of food….. everything…. is first rate!

Really well done. Great food, great service. The choice of main courses or tapas means your appetite level will be catered for. Garden is a haven of bird filled trees and occasional interesting fly pasts from nearby Duxford IWM

This pub, Restaurant is exceptional. In the 1990s this won pub food of the year awards, its been through some changes but everyone with us agreed its back up there. A great experience for anyone. Love this place. So many good memories

Service was excellent. Not amazingly keen on veggie roast but my companions were very pleased with the pork & beef options. Desserts were delicious 😋

Absolutely fantastic pub. The food is wonderful, a really unique menu that is a step above most other pubs. The table service is always excellent, a real highlight and differentiator. The pub itself is beautiful and well restored. By far the best pub in the area, and one of my favourite in all of England, actually. We always bring guests here when they’re visiting from out of town. The owners are brilliant too!

This is the last remaining pub in the Cambridgeshire village of Fowlmere. It's an oldy worldy kind of pub with rambling areas for inside and out, nooks and crannies abound, great. There is a normal bar area, inglenook fireplace, conservatory area, outside covered area, outside open area etc. Food and drinks are available to order from the bar or servery, excellent toilet facilities, very friendly waiting staff. A group of 20 of us enjoyed a sunday lunch of beef or lamb with roast potatoes, various vegetables with a rather large yorkshire pudding, all for £19. Highly recommended 👍

The vibe here is so quintessentially English it's untrue. Rustic, authentic and with food that is exquisite! coupled with great service. I mean you couldn't ask for more.

Just went to enjoy a meal and we weren't disappointed. Belly pork yum and Nancy had beef definitely 5/5. Good portions, well cooked and well presented. Friendly staff. Water a treats for the dog. We'll go again.

Travelled 45 mins to get there at 12.15 as they don’t take bookings for the bar area and were fully booked in the restaurant. I walked in and a guy walked in behind me (obviously a regular) the guy behind the bar completely ignored that I was even there and proceeded to serve the man behind me. Then when he did decide to acknowledge me, I asked if there was a table free for lunch in the bar (which there clearly was) he said no and then immediately started to serve the next group of people. Very rude and disappointing really as the food is that good we’re willing to travel for it. Next time will be sure to book but also hope the staff are feeling a little more hospitable!!

Two of us had steak and ale pie it was the best pie I’ve had in a long while possibly the best ever,my friends wife had the chilli it was to much for her, my wife had the hake it was delicious but maybe a bit on the small side hence only 4 stars. Ps l forgot the red wine jus it had to be tasted to be believed delicious mmm

The roast was excellent for the meat eaters. There's also a separate vegan menu. Everyone got plenty of veggies and there was an interesting selection of them. Our dog was made to feel very much at home too. The icing on the cake was the vegan brownie. I loved it so much, I asked for the recipe. Even though it was a super cheeky request, they cheerfully sent it through to me. Naturally, mine weren't as good. The only tiny thing I would change is for foods on the menu to be marked as veggie or vegan.

Had dinner with my husband for our anniversary, I have to say it was the best food IV eaten for a long time, staff were lovely, my food was so good I didn't want to leave a morsel, but couldn't fit pudding in I was so full. Will definitely return some time soon ❤️

We had a family gathering of 18 for Sunday lunch and The Chequers provided us with a wonderful meal. None of us could fault the service or food. The staff are amazing Thank you.

My wife and I had dinner here on Saturday night. It’s a lovely local pub with loads of character. It was busy but we managed to get a table in the bar area before our dinner reservation. They have a really good selection of beers, gins and wine which suited us. We then had dinner in the mezzanine area of the restaurant which was really nice. We had pub tapas which was really good and good size portions. The service and staff are great and we will definitely return.

Sunday Lunch is alright, but not great 1 potato cut into 3 and meat hidden under Yorkshire pudding, at £18 could do with larger portion. I wouldn't rush back

Excellent food, particularly their chips, flatbread and local meats. Good selection of local craft and real ales. Lovely staff, always friendly and providing great service. Cosy and characterful building with a lovely big garden for the summer. Not a better pub in the area.

Had a very good dinner here on the way to the airport. It was everything you could want from a good English pub. Simple delicious pub fare, exceptional service, good beers on tap, a fireplace and games! Highly recommended.

4 off us had a Sunday lunch, and it was fantastic. All 4 off us had different meats, fish/chips, beef, pork, and lamb dishes, superb, and plenty of vegetables gravey and offered more if needed really nice. The 4 starters were interesting. I had the black pudding, and my friend had a beetroot/smoked salmon offering, good portions. The pub is old and very comfortable with a lovely atmosphere. 2 or 3 log burners going, you're not going to get chilly. Last but 1, the waitresses are very friendly and really lovely. 2nd thing. Check out the garden area. Wow, very well laid out. I do eat out a lot and put it as I see it. 5 stars 🌟 not enough ✨️

The Chequers at Fowlmere is a great country gastro-pub in the very South of Cambridgeshire and definitely worth a visit if you are in the area. It has the wonderful, authentic, old world charm of a 16th century, oak-beamed coaching inn and has not been spoilt by modern upgrades. The staff are all very welcoming and friendly - a credit to the management. The food and beers are brilliant too, including an own brew, Chequers Best Bitter.. Main course portion sizes are huge, particularly for their delicious Sunday lunch. Desserts are great, too, if you have room! You do need to book if you want to eat, as it frequently gets very busy. There is a big beer-garden at the back, great for when the weather is good. Highly recommended 👍

Had our work Christmas meal here, sadly 2 people pulled out last minute which was easily dealt with. The food was amazing (Yorkshire’s were out of this world), the staff were so friendly and attentive. Nothing was too much trouble. For the price, it exceeded our expectations! Well worth £35 for 3 fabulous courses (and mince pies to take home). I have visited a few times during the summer, I will definitely be back again….and again! Thank you so much for a great evening, enjoyed by all :)

Love The Chequers! Staff are so friendly and welcoming. Food was epic. I had the chicken leek and mushroom pie and it was exceptional. I've also been for a Sunday Roast and I have to say it's in my top 5 roast dinners I've ever had. Highly recommend!

Lovely service and great food too especially considering how busy they were just before Christmas

We had a lovely meal at The Chequers on their mezzanine level. The staff were very friendly and efficient. The meal was served quickly, was well presented, hot and delicious. The decor and atmosphere was fantastic. They even had cotton napkins and put our names on the table using scrabble letters! We will be back.

Period building 1675 with lots of charm and character. They may not have a take away menu but they will do some meals to go like flat bread pizzas. My steak was perfectly cooked and delicious to eat. 12 of us sat down for Sunday lunch and the roast beef was cooked to perfection. Quick friendly service. Popular with residents and visitors. Recommended. 2nd visit with 13 for Sunday lunch this time. All good, beef, and turkey cooked to perfection.lovely attentive staff. Plenty of parking both on and off the roadway.

Wow, we just came out of Cambridge for a spot of lunch. Turned up, proper country pub. The staff were amazing. The greeting was great, and the vibe was cozy. The knowledge of the menu and recommendations were also on point. We were served by Amelia, and she did an excellent job, including the general banter we had with her. They must've thought I was a food critic, too, but this place was great.

Last minute decision to stop for lunch, lovely food and warm welcome and warm pub.

Starter potted beef brisket to die for , main pork chop from their own pigs with mash, glazed carrots, broccoli and a jus so tasty fabulous, and the orange crème brûlée for sweet was delicious l have had many meals here but that meal was the best👍

Just had Sunday Lunch here. This pub has a lovely, cosy atmosphere. The staff are friendly and welcoming. The roast was so good, home cooking at its best. Definitely recommend, looking forward to the next time.

A very welcoming and dog-friendly pub. We ordered tapas - which was delicious and generous portions. The pudding menu is interesting and includes cornflake ice cream and kitkat sundae.

Absolutely superb pub with excellent food. The steak and mushroom pie was incredible, and good value. I think my partner had eyes too big for his stomach but his tapas selection looked great too.

Lovely little village pub we booked into after Duxford airshow. Service from the staff there was first rate with a reasonable selection of very nice food. Also very reasonably priced for the area. Really impressed with the range of non-alcoholic beer on offer too!

Jade,Chris and team couldn't have been more helpful when we had a power cut just as we were about to livestream a funeral. Such a brilliant bunch of staff. The food is amazing too

Spent ages scouring reviews on pubs to take our son for his 20th Birthday lunch with his grandma. We settled on this gem of a pub. I’d booked online for 4 people but his girlfriend had made a surprise visit. Not a problem! We were greeted warmly and seated to a lovely cosy area in the extension/conservatory, just what we wanted. Already a jug of iced, cold water and Scrabble letters on the table with Happy Birthday. Nice touch! Brilliant menu with lots of choice. I personally chose 3 tapas dishes of white bait, ribs and a bacon salad. Yummy and had to share, largest white bait I’ve ever had. And the tapas aren’t small, not like some places we’ve been. My son had the burger, fries and coleslaw which he couldn’t finish because it was humongous . They boxed it up for us. Everything is reasonably priced, tasty and well worth it. The staff are all very helpful and friendly. All in all it was a lovely start to his birthday celebrations. Thank you we will definitely be back.

hands down best pub food in all of Fowlmere

I pre-booked our reservation via the website. Plenty of options to choose from for seating at The Chequers. Not the greatest sized car park but there is road parking. Greeted by friendly staff & seated immediately. We had a lovely table in the main restaurant below the mezzanine. We were bright a jug of cold water. We had two Archers & Lemonades, one pint of Cider, one pint of Coke, one bottle of Cambridge Apple & Blueberry juice, plus another Cider after our meal. Not the greatest selection of Starters. Three on the main Starters list, then a selection of Tapa style dishes. I opted for the Chicken Liver Pate, my son had the Cheesy Garlic Flatbread, my Nan & Fiancé chose the Crispy Prawns with Sweet Chilli dipping sauce. I didn’t really enjoy my Chicken Liver Pate, it wasn’t too flavoursome. My son’s Cheesy Garlic flatbread was swimming in Garlic Butter & very overpowering. For Mains, myself & my Fiancé was looking forward to devouring a Roast Dinner. We ordered three Roast Beef dinners, a Sourdough Tomato & Mozzarella Flatbread & my daughter opted for the Beef Burger. It was a bit of a wait between Starters & Mains, I could tell they had a lot of bookings. We were overjoyed when our Mains came out. You cannot beat a Roast Dinner on a Sunday! The Beef was cooked to perfection, vegetables were al dente, Cauliflower Cheese was delicious. The Main meals were a certainly the star of the show. great portions, the Roasts were spot on, yummy skin on chips. We squeezed in puddings. I had the Passionfruit & White Chocolate Crème Bulee, my son had the Toffee Crumble Cheesecake & my daughter had the Oreo Sundae. I couldn’t taste the Passionfruit, I only got a slight taste of White Chocolate. Although, the starters & the puddings weren’t the best, I would definitely return for the amazingly tasty Roast Dinner. Overall, our meal & drinks costs just over £180.00 for the 5 of us. I would gladly like to try the starters & puddings again if they menu were to change. No disrespect to the staff as the Mains were gorgeous. I definitely think they are worthy of a more incredible Starter & Pudding Menu.

I went there on the recommendation of CPS,where my pet was cremated. It was the perfect place to wait for the ashes. The ambiance and hospitality helped on what was a traumatic day,so many thanks and I hope to visit again !

Ouch! £15 for very boring salad! Very overpriced.

Our tapas-style lunch was just what we were hoping for. Two dishes each worked out nicely - my choice was ham hock with piccalilli, and vegetable samosas with mango chutney. We were on our way to the nearby Wildlife Park at Shepreth, where the cafeteria is limited (and bedlam); the Chequers is much quieter and the food is several classes above. We'd be very happy to come back.
