The food tasted lovely, but that’s about the only good thing about the place. Water was brought to our table, and we were not told we would have to pay for this, just to see it on the bill at the end to our surprise. This place is not suitable for gluten free, vegan, vegetarian or other dietary requirements. One of our party had a crab allergy, and was told he cannot have anything the has come out of the fryer since they use it for the crab tempura. He could not have chips, scotch eggs, calamari or prawns. This is a serious heath issue, the same oil should not be used to fry meat veg and fish. They don’t even make that mistake at weatherspoons! Next up- the mains. Again, absolutely delicious, however extremely overpriced. I paid £32 for venison and mash, which was about two thirds mash with 6 small slices of venison. My friend ordered a chicken burger which was £15, but wasn’t served with any sides at all. Just a lonely burger on a wooden board. Sides were anywhere from £4.50 - £9 extra each! We also then had to send back desert, since my friends ice cream was served in a hot bowl straight out of the dishwasher, and was served to us half melted. The staff were generally cold and didn’t seem smiley or welcoming, instead rather tense and unhappy to be there. That was until we left at 9.30pm to find 4 staff members extremely drunk in the smoking area, shouting at each other, laughing extremely loudly and making very loud sexual noises and innuendoes. Very unprofessional and off putting. We were also charged a £30 service charge for all of this. Reading though trip advisor reviews it seems that will be going to the owner. No wonder the staff are unhappy. The place is also filled with bull and cow heads on the wall, at perfect height to constantly be hitting your head on them, or find your self face to face with them on the way to the toilet. Very weird and unsettling. Also their idea of art is the stick 3 cheese graters on a wooden board and put that on the wall🤦‍♀️

In this very hot August weather I booked a room for my dog and I the night before meeting a close friend for lunch here at The Chequers. I live a few hours from the restaurant and was worried that my dog would overheat on the journey during the day. I was met by Kim who was enchanting and super helpful. She and her colleague Jarrod brought me Room Service, which I had ordered earlier in the day realising that I might arrive late. The room was delightful, modern, light and spacious for a very fair price. The bed was extremely comfy and the wooden floor meant my large dog didn't leave fur on a carpet or overheat. An extremely good option is to book direct with The Chequers and you are then entitled to a truly 'cordon bleu' breakfast menu included in the room price. If you book through a third party like booking.com breakfast is an extra charge according to what you order. Jarrod was extremely helpful and attentive. He served me a delicious breakfast and has reserved me an outside table, under cover from the sun, for my dog to sit at my feet while I have lunch with my friend. Money very well spent.

We had heard good things about the Chequers and decided to go there to celebrate our wedding anniversary. They went out of their way to make it a special occasion for us, starting with a card of congratulations on the table. The staff, Jared, Mack and Kim were friendly and informative. The food was delicious, we went with two of the recommended meat dishes, rib-eye steak and lamb rump. Between courses we were treated to a complimentary heart-shaped chocolate and strawberry desert taster. We thoroughly enjoyed the evening, it was a memorable occasion.

It’s always good to be greeted by friendly staff when you arrive, followed by great food and and service . What more can you ask for? Thank you

Well over priced for a straight forward Roast. Mum, Dad and 2 teenagers for £178. Tip already added and goes to the owner Not the staff. No atmosphere, so so service while having dinner outside by a road. Beef roast has 1x carrot and 2x roast potatoes and one the the potatoes was rock hard and inedible. Far better pubs around and much cheaper.

A great traditional Sunday roast with friendly attentive service. Far better than fancier more expensive nearby restaurants. Good choices on the menu. I was allowed to have my beef unfashionably well done without being criticised for it! Crab was also pronounced delicious. Generous glasses of wine and reasonably priced various gins.

Absolutely first class! Food & service was superb. Menu choice was varied & extensive. Attentive staff. We will definitely be returning. Lovely card on table from team to say Happy Anniversary. Accommodation was lovely too.

On 27th April 2024 my wife and I held our wedding celebrations at The Chequers in Burcott, we cannot be any happier with the service and attention that we received. The food was amazing, as it is every time we visit, the service from the incredible staff was the best we've ever received and the rooms were so comfortable after a long day on our feet. We set our wedding celebrations expectations high, Mads, Steve and the team delivered so far above our expectations, in each and every way possible. We've received so many compliments on the food, drinks selections, service and atmosphere from all our friends and family that celebrated with us. If you are thinking of visiting the region, looking for somewhere to eat, drink or stay overnight, go to The Chequers as this is bar far the best venue in our region - you will not be disappointed. Thank you to all at The Chequers, you are amazing.

The Sunday Roast here is the best we’ve ever eaten by a very long chalk. Completely faultless. Tender meat, perfectly cooked, tasty, al dente vegetables, crispy roast potatoes, delicious gravy & a yummy Yorkshire pudding. Served piping hot & promptly with a smile. Excellent service, reasonably priced too.

You could taste the love in this food. It was perfect. Hands down the best starter I have ever eaten and the best Sunday Roast I’ve had in a long time. The staff were attentive professionals with great humour. I totally recommend this fabulous restaurant.

We came here for an overnight stay. We arrived early for our room so we had a late lunch. The food was lovely. We went back for dinner in the evening, the cocktails were lovely, the food was presented nicely however when eating the main meal it was overly seasoned and basically drowned in salt. This made my partner feel ill. His sodium levels were too high and we needed 2 litres of water before he started to feel better. The breakfast in the morning again presented very well but again way too much salt. The room was lovely but needed finishing off with few details. Nice stay but wouldn't return due to the food being caked in salt

Another great meal at The Chequers. What they do, they do very well, accompanied by cheerful, willing staff. It is the consistncy of the service and fare that gives us the confidence to recommend this pub to friends.

This is by far the best food I have received in any restaurant for a long time. The place is lovely and welcoming with great staff and the menu is a little different with plenty of choice to suit any taste. Would highly recommend

Overpriced tasteless Rubbish. I don’t know whether they had no chef the day we went but we ordered the cauliflower steak….to our surprise it was a whole cauliflower, still hard and barely warm plunked on a plate with some chillies. The fish and chips was not fresh, overcooked to a point we could not eat the batter, the cottage pie was a tiny portion which is just as well as it was dreadful to eat, and it was as if they forgot to add in any mince, is was literally gravy with a gallon of Worcestershire sauce poured all over it…we decided not to bother with dessert since the main was so bad. Never again, I don’t recommend, extremely expensive for the worst food we have ever eaten.

I was recently visiting the UK (am from Canada) and my friends took me to Chequers for dinner. They had been raving about this place for a while, so I was very excited to finally be able to try it. We were celebrating their anniversary, and this was the perfect place. From the ambiance to the service to the food, everything was absolutely amazing! Started with the scotch egg, which I have to say is THE BEST scotch egg I have ever had. Perfectly crumbed, the sausage coating was flavorful but light, and the egg was perfectly runny inside. Accompanied with a pickled salad, it was one of the best starters I've had in a while. I then had the pork belly main. I have no words that can adequately describe how good this dish was. The crackling was crispy and crunchy, and the meat was melt in your mouth. For dessert had the banoffee pie, and again it was delicious. All in all, it was one of the best meals I've had in the UK, and I've visited many times. I cannot wait to go back again on my next visit. I would give this place 6 stars if I could! A definite recommend!

We have been visiting The Chequers at Burcot for years, it used to be ok but recently the prices have increased and the quality of the food and the service has dropped. I took my mum for a NYE dinner and her £36 fillet steak arrived like charcoal, mine was less burnt but not right. The fries were greasy and cold and the mac cheese looked worse than store bought. Upon pointing out the charcoal steak to the waiter, he told my mum to try it, she might like it and proceeded to walk off in a huff. When he returned to the table with condiments, my mother informed him that a he didn’t like it. He was then even more obstinate, saying “this steak is cooked by Steve Sanderson, the owner and that is cooked correctly, plus you wanted it cooked well done”. At this point I informed him she would not be eating it and it needs to be changed, he ripped it from the table and stormed off. Following this service, we decided that we would not be continuing the meal, I spoke to another server/FOH and told her we would be paying for the drinks but nothing else. I realise that she was trying to apologise, but there was no amount of touching my shoulder that would make me change my mind. And felt like an invasion of my space. So we paid for the drinks and walked out. On the way out, another server joyfully said ‘I doubt I will be seeing you again, maybe on the street’ Thanks to Steve Sanderson and the team for ruining our NYE.

We have been to the restaurant on numerous occasions and the sunday roast has always been exceptional We found ourselves on our own Christmas day and thought we would book Not cheap at 125 per head but we thought it might be something special The pub is fab , the staff very attentive but the Christmas dinner was the same as a roast with no brussels , stuffing , bread sauce or an offer of cauliflower cheese ! Parsnip shavings and two roast pots !! The canapes were not what i would class as canapes , a pig in blanket , piece of belly pork with apple sauce !! However the scotch egg was delicious ! Prawn cocktail was very nice , the palatte cleanser lemon sorbet was so sour it actually made my eyes water and the winter berry meringue barely had any cream We paid the service charge because it was Christmas day but left feeling a bit flat especially when there wasnt a member of staff to say cheerio and thank you ! I would definitely revisit for a roast but felt quite disappointed with the special Christmas menu !! Definitely more inspiration needed .

Very disappointed and definitely not value for money was extremely disappointed with starter a Camembert which came rock hard unable to dip bread which was stale took it away returned in few minutes not much improvement portion sizes extremely small 4 starters 4 mains 1 bottle of wine 2 coffees .. the bill was very high with a high service charge would definitely not recommend to any one ..

The service was good; friendly and attentive, but the food was subpar. My salmon was overcooked and the potatoes were dry and under-seasoned. My partner's venison burger was slightly undercooked and dominated by too much truffle oil. I think the restaurant is living off an outdated reputation, unfortunately. The quality on offer does not match the prices charged.

When we need to visit Oxford we use the accommodation here and of course having a restaurant on site we opt to eat here too. Our first visit was a great surprise with the room being exactly what we expected and the meal was very good,our second visit not so good. Accommodation still good if not a little on the expensive side, however the restaurant was a disappointment. We ordered the venison burger as this is a favourite of ours. Not only did it come on a chopping board (what ever happened to good old plates) all the normal extras you'd get with a burger were extra e.g. £6 for 10 chips. The worst thing was the burger was quite raw on the inside which meant it was cold before you got through half the burger, it was also covered in so many different flavours you couldn't taste the meat. I did mention this to the waitress when she came to clear the table and whilst she apologised nothing was done about it (lucky our dog ate what we couldn't). Breakfast the next morning wasn't any warmer. Will look for somewhere else for our next visit considering the premium cost but below par food.

A favourite pub of ours and regular visits, we are very disappointed with what used to be the best Sunday roast in Oxfordshire. Whilst the service was excellent the food has gone down hill. Uncooked raw potatoes, beef riddled with fat, chewy calamari and and shrivelled up poor excuse for a brownie we’re the meal highlights. Such a shame and our last visit.

My other half surprised me with lunch here, neither of us had been before, but have been told how good it is, Best chicken pate I have ever eaten, The roast dinners were amazing and plenty of food and desserts were just as good, all staff were friendly and the gentleman that looked after us was very helpful and we had a good laugh with him. Definitely be revisiting
