The Chef's Table in Cheshire West and Chester

It’s was our first visit to the enlarged Chef’s Table at its new venue. In the past we have Ben several times to there smaller more intimate restaurant elsewhere in Chester which we loved. The new venue is bigger, brighter and as you would expect much less intimate. Personally I thought the new presentation was ok but not exceptional. The service, menu and meal though were as good if not better. The food retains its originality, imagination and quality. Really enjoyed it. All of it comes at a premium and I think that premium has actually increased in relation to other better restaurants in Chester. Something they need to be careful about going forward. Not a place to go on a budget.

Went today for Sunday lunch. Fabulous. DH and I ate the same, Persian salad and herb roast chicken. Salad was abs lovely, labaneh, seeds, tomatoes, lentils etc. Perhaps I'm not selling it but it was truly lovely (and healthy). Main course was chicken breast. Moist and tasty. Had extra portion roast veggies, all lovely. DH had steamed pudding, he said it was brill, I had an espressotini, fab. Deffo on the 'go again' list. Get what you pay for. xx

I booked this restaurant for my mums 70th where I had organised a meal on a Sunday afternoon for 28 people. I booked the table via email which was effortless. I had to pay a deposit per head and menus were sent a week ahead of time for pre orders. I added last minute guests without issue. The waiting staff were organised, polite and the efficient. The food was excellent, well above the standard of a pub lunch (not that this is a pub) and the prices for the food were good value. I brought our own cake which the chefs cut up. I want to thank Chefs Kitchen for a memorable day and making my mum so happy. I don’t have a bad word to say.

I have been coming to this restaurant ever since it opened music hall passage and it’s never disappoints. The new premises are outstanding as are the staff. Thank you award winning Liam and team so proud of you all. Cino your wine recommendations as the best! Fine dining at its best but please don’t tell anyone we want to keep it a local’s secret! 🤫

We went for an early evening meal and were definitely not disappointed. As it was just after 6 it was quiet when we arrived. It's a really nice light airy space inside. The staff were lovely and friendly but not over attentive which was good. We had a beautiful meal, amazing food, timely excellent service, and very good portion sizes too. We left happy and will definitely return. Thank You.

As near to faultless as possible. First visit; it will not be the last. every facet of the visit was impeccable.

The food was excellent, with an imaginative combination of ingredients and a comprehensive wine list. The staff were friendly, efficient and helpful. I would definitely recommend.

This is truly a must visit destination. An exquisite menu that all of us struggled to choose from as every single dish sounded (and looked and tasted) delicious. The art of cookery at its best. Informative, engaged and very pleasant front of house team. Slightly more affordable wines at the lower end of the price range would be the only improvement we might suggest. Will be back again very soon.

Food was great, service was very good Only downside for us was the table. We were put next to two old unused doors , with no natural light coming through. Worst table in the restaurant, and it was not full Ruined the experience. So as long as you don't get that table worth going

My husband and I were really looking forward to visiting chefs table after hearing so many positive things from friends, however we were really quite disappointed with our meal. We had read the menu in advance and we're excited for our meals. The restaurant itself lacked any atmosphere, it was bland and loud with 0 personality. I was unimpressed with the waiting staff, our service was slow and there was definitely a feeling of them not wanting to be there. We shared some focaccia to start with which was beautiful however for mains we ordered the lamb and the beef. Both dishes were presented nicely but considering they both had such different sides, ingredients and flavours the dishes tasted almost identical. They both appeared to be covered in the same sauce so it was almost like having a roast dinner. We chose not to have dessert as we had been disappointed with our mains. Instead we chose to sit in the bar area for a cocktail. The atmosphere in the bar area is considerably nicer than the restaurant however we were not overly impressed with our drinks. Overall, the food was fine but going to a restaurant is about more than that. There are much nicer restaurants for a similar price range that I would recommend first.

The food was amazing but what is the service charge all about? You pay a lot for the food and to be served a nice meal so why have they added on a service charge it's not a takeaway so surely service is included. A tip for the staff should be discretionary and should not be automatically added on to the bill.

Wife & I popped in for lunch, ordered the tuna & duck to start, followed by the cod & pork for main, sublime in every way, loved everything as always, from the greeting upon arrival, history & anecdotes from the sommelier, to the taste sensation with perfect presentation, perfect !

Superb as always, if you are in Chester treat yourself, you won’t be disappointed , Totally understanding of allergies making dining out a relaxing experience as it should be .

We booked to celebrate our 62nd wedding anniversary. We wanted this to be special because my husband spent our 61st anniversary in Bilbao hospital after fracturing a femur. That holiday was to sample the food from the Basque region. We didn’t get to do it because of the accident. We had been customers at the MusicHall Passageway Chefs Table and loved the food then but hadn’t visited the Pepper Street one until last week. We had already eaten out 3 times last week but in places with totally different offerings. We hate the parking charges in Chester but decided to use the Grosvenor carpark as it was nearest and this was a one off occasion. We arrived 5 minutes before our allotted time and were seated in the bar area. I had specifically requested a table that wasn’t in the middle as my hearing is poor and don’t deal with ‘surround’ sound too well. We couldn’t see a vacant table but after about 15 minutes one became available and we were called once it had been cleared and reset. It was by the window but I had to ask for the music to be turned lower as my hearing aids were picking up too much music. Not sure why restaurants play ‘background’ music when there is so much chatter from the diners. We were given menus only after catching the eye of a waitress but were pleased that a bottle of water and glasses were brought to the table within short time of being seated. We had browsed the menu on line so more or less knew what we wanted. We had been seated about 10 minutes and once again had to catch the eye of a waiter to give our choices. The place was busy however. Our first course choices of arancini for me and prawns for my husband. arrived in no time. We both agreed we had made the correct choice. Loved my arancini as probably the best I had ever tasted. The prawns were large and succulent. Starters of scallops for me and duck for my husband were again excellent. Main courses of cod loin for me and belly pork for my husband were full of unusual flavours. The service up to this point had been slow. As we came to the dessert the menu appeared soon after our main course was cleared away and our menu choices taken soon after so service bucked up then. I enjoyed my Eton dessert but my husband said he wouldn’t choose the chocolate dessert again as he said it was a bit dry and lacking the unusual flavours we have got used to having there. We followed up with coffee. Overall the meal was excellent but we were a bit disappointed that not one member of staff had made a point of wishing us a happy anniversary even though we mentioned on booking and on arriving nor did any of the staff ask if our meal was ok. Even if we go to an inexpensive pub or restaurant to celebrate a birthday or other occasion someone there usually wishes us well or even send a token message written in chocolate. Nit picking in a way but not the full experience we expected. We intend to try the tapas in the coming weeks and just hope that doesn’t disappoint us in any way. We will eat again in Chef’s Table despite some small disappointments as the menu is so different and full of flavours.

Another excellent 3 course A la carte meal for the four of us. Choice was varied and had three varied starters, three chose the wild halibut main course with mussels, caviar ++.... which was exceptional. Two of us had Eton Nest the other two had Chocolate Fondant dessert a perfect way to end our meal. The wine parings by the glass suggested on the A la Carte menu with respective meals was an ideal way to compliment your meal. The wine pairings on the wine menu by the glass are more limited in choice unless you opt for full bottles. The total bill was discounted by 15% on a Mon/Tues, we opted for and a bonus. Thanks for an exceptional meal.

Sensational food and drink in a wonderful environment. I've been meaning to get here for a while, but I haven't, for one reason or another, so this was my first visit. My new favourite restaurant!

A friend and I were in Chester for the day and luckily chose the Chefs table for lunch. This was an exceptional experience from starters to desserts…..Thankyou. We had the suggested wines to match each course and enjoyed them immensely. We think it was great value for money and recommend a visit

Lovely meal for our anniversary, just thought the vegetable ‘s were over roasted , but everything else was just fine and we were well looked after by the staff. Thank you.

Food was fantastic, and service was good but did not reflect a high end restaurant (the staff were extremely pleasant and is no reflection on them, just some fine tuning) The food came very quickly maybe a bit to quick and plates were cleared almost immediately after putting your knife and fork down, bar was full of empty glasses which did not look great again not reflective of a high end venue. The most important thing (the food) was probably some of the best food your going to eat and if they can match this with the other bits it will be Michelin star level

The food was exceptional; fantastic flavours and presentation. However, the service we had was very poor and it felt anything but a special occasion. On arriving we were told we only had the table for 1.5 hours, so we didn’t feel we had time for a drink at the bar beforehand. As it happened we ended up at the table for 2.5 hours so we were incorrectly informed. The whole experience was not worth £250 for the two of us, as we won’t be returning. We had many fantastic experiences at the previous venue.

Surprised and disappointed that maitre du did not ask critical questions about nallergies. When questioned if the miso soup contained crustaceans, he did not understand. I Explained that meant shrimps, crab etc he then approached different members of staff to ask if it did. Eventually confirmed that head chef confirmed that he would make it without soft shell crab! Otherwise food was excellent but as usual wines were overpriced.

The food was outstanding, and the drinks (espresso martini, and Tanquaray gin and tonic) were excellent. The service was good, and the staff were courteous and responsive. The only downside was the smell of cigarette smoke that polluted our table.

This was booked due to the 5* numerous reviews, having no knowledge pre arriving. Very modern restaurant, comfortable and spacious, close to the Chester Rows in the centre of the City. WOW! So good, a real delight, we both chose different dishes off the menu …everything was wonderful! The flavours, the presentation..incredible. Fine dining at its best. Food can be that good! For context, we have eaten in several Michelin * Restaurants in Europe and some 2 & 3* ones and this was my personal best ever, for the wonderful flavours and the pure pleasure of every mouthful being a joy! W We can see why it’s got about 3000 5* reviews! Definitely Fine Dining. The costs understandably reflected the quality, imagination and WOW of the whole experience. We were very impressed. Thank you Chef and Team. It does have a Sister Restaurant next door, serving Tapas style food.

Olives and haggis intros were both good. Scallop, fish and sweetcorn starter was a bit odd. The salad was excellent. Rump if lamb again was very tasty and top notch. The beetroot risotto disappointing. Wine and fizz both good. 4/5 overall.

Our favourite place to eat in Chester as guaranteed to be excellent food & service . would definitely recommend it .

Absolutely first class from start to finish, Staff were friendly, helpful and very knowledgeable. The food was outstanding and flavours to die for! We were so impressed we are coming back for the roast dinners.

The food at chefs table just keeps getting better, been eating at chefs table since it was in music hall passage in old location, you can see why the head chef has won chef of the year in Cheshire and one of his junior team have just won junior chef of the year in Cheshire, the Harrisa lamb was one one of the best things I've ever eaten, amazing food and service

A belated birthday treat with very relaxing fine dining experience. It is good to have such a treat once in a while and we all enjoyed our menu choices and the wine chosen by the sommelier.

Having been to the original Chef’s Table we looked forward to our first visit to the revamped restaurant in it’s new location but overall it was a disappointing experience. For starters we each chose the scallops & cod loin. The cod was lovely but the scallops had been sliced in to thin slivers of which I think were about 4 on the plate – barely half a scallop. Prepared this way they didn’t have a great texture and were not bursting with flavour either. There was a heavily battered leg of a soft shelled crab on the plate too which mainly tasted of the batter. For the mains I had the pork dish and my wife had the lamb. The pork belly piece was very good as was the rib, but two other pieces of pork were quite tough with little flavour and the whole lot along with the hassleback potatoes arrived only luke warm. The lamb was beautifully cooked and had a lot of flavour but was a bit overpowered by the dark heavy sauce which had been poured all over it. It would perhaps have been better as a winter dish rather than in mid July with the sauce on the side to add as you wanted. The courgette flower which accompanied the lamb was just a leaf, heavily battered which dominated the taste. The side dishes of roast seasonal vegetables and parmesan mash were very good. I tried the Weetwood Pilsner beer which was excellent but when I asked for another was told that they had run out of beer – not just the pilsner but all beer and had just 2 cans left – despite being supplied by a local shop which is about 5 mins walk away! Overall the food was good, but not excellent, overpriced for what was served (about £80 / head) and the whole experience sadly is not memorable and did not live up to expectation or previous experience.

First time at the ‘new’ Chefs Table, excellent lunch menu offer. Food extremely good and ambience good in a very attractive restaurant. Definetly on my list!

We once again had an incredible experience at Chefs Table celebrating our Anniversary. As always, the Lounge area was comfortable and inviting for pre dinner drinks. Our table in the restaurant was perfectly situated, noise levels at a minimum so able to hear the excellent music. Wine ordered from impressive knowledgeable sommelier - (very good Rioja) My husband and I decided to order the same dishes which were absolutely exquisite, getting better with every bite. Surf & Turf to start then Stone bass for main. Dessert - spoilt is how we felt. We ordered caramelised Cherry and Banana - 100% one of the nicest desserts I’ve eaten. - it was our anniversary, (we answered the questions when booking) “are you celebrating?” -Thought no more about it after booking but on the night the kitchen kindly sent out a plate with “Happy Anniversary” and a delicious meringue along with an additional dessert called (Chester Zoo). It was amazing, we loved it. Over all, an outstanding experience. Attentive staff, beautiful relax surroundings and absolutely out of this world food. Chefs Table is definitely worth a visit. Thank you.

Sensational 2 course lunch, Chester at last has a very very good restaurant. Unfortunately it looks like the chef designed the fixtures and fittings. But put the lack of ambience to one side the food was Michelin star, if you want eat food at its best this is the place

WOW! From the moment we entered the service, quality and taste of food, and atmosphere blew us away. We started with a cocktail at the bar. My wife had the watermelon tea and I had a glass of Viognier, and we had a great conversation with Millie. At our table, we enjoyed a bottle of the 2021 Campolieti Valpolicella with our Spring Pea Arancini, then Duck breast Rilette, followed by our mains of Lamb Rump and Fillet of Beef. Every sauce, flavor, presentation, service was executed at the highest level. The balance of tastes were perfect. The kitchen produces spectacular dishes We will be back very soon!

The food is absolutely phenomenal. My only complaint about the restaurant is their communication is dire! They never answer the phone & when you leave a message they never get back to you. I wanted to book for 8 people once & because they never contacted me I had to physically go to the restaurant to book. They need to sort this out as they will lose business.

Disappointed after stellar experience with dinner - went for lunch and small plates, not quote cohesive dishes. Steak with some sort of chili cake didn't work even though the steak was great. Duck starter was the tastiest dish. 4 miniscule pieces of cheese served with a blob of marmite and a giant quenelle of butter was shockingly "meh". Went from fav Chester restaurant to 'also-ran'.

The food and overall experience was excellent. If only they were more flexible with evening booking times I would be a more regular customer.

We enjoyed a great Saturday evening at the Chef’s Table. The staff were friendly and efficient, willing to discuss the menu in a knowledgable manner.we enjoyed the Surf and Turf/crispy Chicken thigh with massaman curry sauce for starters. Both were excellent. We followed with the pork nose to tail and the lamb, apparently our waiters two favourite dishes on the menu. He has excellent taste, the meal was complemented with a great bottle of Rioja. I would happily recommend this restaurant.

Starters were delicious- the flavours and textures in the scallop were amazing The lamb with harissa was so tender and I may just eat triple cooked chips next time

We loved the atmosphere as well as the food. Our three courses were of the highest quality with the meat mains (pork and lamb) memorable. One of our starters, the Cheshire Potato and Watercress Veloute was outstanding. We also loved the lemon meringue birthday treats. The decor and atmosphere enhanced our experience. The tables were well spaced and, although we arrived early and the restaurant was not full, we immediately felt at home. The service was careful and attentive without being intrusive. It was very good value for money.

Exceptional food served by very knowledgeable and attentive staff. As a party of four we all chose something different for starter and main, and all of us were surprised and delighted by what we ate. The dishes were very creative, both in taste and presentation, and there was something for everyone. A truly memorable experience.

A quite delicious and unique lunch menu , brilliant value at £30 for two courses and £35 for three. The service was brilliant, both server and sommelier were engaging and very knowledgeable. We thoroughly enjoyed a quite superb lunch - thank you Chefs Table.

We had a wonderful evening for my partner’s 40th - warm, friendly and attentive staff and the food was fantastic.

Had a Sunday Roast, delicious. Tender juicy beef and lovely accompaniments. Sommelier was very attentive and remembered our previous wine order, such attention to detail. We love it here, on our list of very favourite restaurants. Would highly recommend.

Used to be a frequent visitor to the Chefs table in it's old location but haven't been to it's new restaurant yet so was looking forward too it. Am pleased to report that the food was still to the same high standard and the menu still full of interesting choices that it people love it for. The food tasted amazing and was well presented. Our server Joe was polite and attentive through out the meal. The restaurant is a lot more spacious than before but still feels intimate. Can highly recommend this place.

We'd had several bad experiences at pubs recently and decided to go somewhere a bit more specialised to eat and Chef's Table more than exceeded expectations. Faith in eating out restored. We did the 3 course lunch menu and food was outstanding and fun. Tasting menu quality but decent portions. Attentive and knowledgeable staff. Looking forward to an excuse to go back and eat there again soon.

We had been recommended this restaurant by a friend. The food was very good as was the service! It was my wife’s 50th birthday and we were very disappointed as we had finished our desserts and wanted to have a coffee and another cocktail when we were told we would have to have this in the bar as the table was required for another sitting. We were told we only had the table for two hours but no one had told us. We then just paid and left. A very disappointing end to the evening which was spoilt!!

When we arrived, there was no-one to greet us and it took a few minutes to be acknowledged in the bar where a sign had asked us to wait. We were shown to our table which was a little large for 4 of us (a large round table probably more suited to seat 6) The service and food was excellent and we had a lovely evening. Slight disappointment in that when I booked the table, it asked if we were celebrating anything and I wrote that it was our friend’s 60th birthday. Sadly this wasn’t recognised so I would question why I was encouraged to give this information? All in all, the food, drink and service was excellent but a couple of tweaks would make it even better.
