Loved this little shop! We were drawn inside by the incredible smell of fresh cheese scones. Will be making a regular stop for a cheese fix every time I visit York now! Knowledgeable and friendly service. 10/10. Nom nom! 😋

The best elevated grilled cheese ('posh toast') in England! Great cheese shop too. Excellent lunch, affordable, friendly, quiet location.

We found this place by accident. We wanted to put together a box of English cheeses for German friends. Nothing was too much trouble. We were given advice and help and I think the end result will be much appreciated. What a find this shop is. Will definitely return and can recommend to others.

The best posh grilled cheese in Yorkshire, possibly the world. Stu is a cheese expert and excellent cook. Very knowledgeable about cheese and he carry's Shepard's Purse, Mrs. Bell's Blue, the best sheep's blue cheese on earth too, a perfect combination.

My partner saw The Cheese Trader recommended on an online advert (specifically the loaded fries!) so we decided to pop in for lunch before the drive back down to Oxford, very glad we did! Loaded fries with Camembert, salami and chorizo was amazing, my partner had a toastie with truffle Gouda and spring onions which she also thoroughly enjoyed. Add a very warm welcome and indoor/outdoor seating to this and would 100% recommend to anyone looking for some lunch in York, whatever the weather! Good selection of cheeses for purchase also!

The cheese trader is located on a charming shopping street and was recommended by our private tour guide. She took us in there, and the gentleman offered us tastings of different cheeses, including the special cheese at Christmas time called Yorkshire Wensleydale, a creamy and crumbly cheese only produced in York. We also tasted a Charcoal, cheddar cheese, which was outstanding. Make sure to put this on your list of things to do in York.

It would be almost criminal not to recommend the Cheese Trader to people. I messaged a few weeks back explaining that I'm autistic and highly anxious but wanted to try the loaded fries, and the replier was just so kind and polite in their response. I went in today, Thursday 7th December 2023. I met with the lovely Stu who made me feel so welcome and at ease. Holy moly guys, WOW. These fries are that intense, that delicious, just incredible... a true Harry Met Sally moment, those fries were a truly mind-blowing experience. Stu was kind enough to let me stay a few minutes past closing so I could eat my food in the dry, for which I am OTT grateful for. The shop itself was really nice, I was feeling sooooo anxious about going in! I have coeliac disease, so adhere to a gluten free lifestyle, Stu wiped down the sides, explained the fact their chip fryer and chips are gluten free, and so are the toppings. I will absolutely be returning here, and especially for my birthday treat in February! Thank you for making my day extra special!

Absolutely fantastic little hidden gem in York. A must for any cheese fan! Super clued up on allergens and cross contamination. The owner was incredibly friendly but not in a pushy way. He knew immediately which cheeses were not safe for coeliacs in the display fridge and could tell me why. The street food options of Halloumi fries & dirty fries were gluten free with a dedicated gluten free fryer. I went for Camembert dirty fries with sundried tomato & chilli - absolutely delicious!!! My husband had the Cheddar, Salami & Chorizo which he thoroughly enjoyed. We are planning to visit York again just to come here!!

Absolutely fabulous streetfood: cheesy ciabatta plus loaded dirty fries & halloumi fries & drinks for under £15 a head. No limit on toppings either. Totally gorgeous lunch. A hidden gem that deserves a wider audience.

I found myself having missed lunch with a long time to go till evening meal....and noticed this little gem on the other side of the road. 45 minutes later I was walking out the beneficiary of a superb coronation chicken sandwich (plus salad and coleslaw) and rejuvenating pot of tea. The price was a steal as well. Forget the chains and multiples, one-off businesses like this, passionate about what they do, win every time.

Tasty steaks, cooked to everyone’s liking. A shared T-bone satisfied both diners, a sirloin was very enjoyable, and the flatiron surprised a sometimes reluctant steak eater, since it was not only tender, but very flavoursome. The accompanying vegetables were nicely cooked and tasty, while the sauce portions were very generous and would easily satisfy more than one person. The service was pleasant and efficient, and the atmosphere was fine; not too noisy for a busy Saturday night.

Ollie and the rest of the team really made our first but certainly not our last trip memorable. The service was second to none watching the team up and down the stairs working extremely hard to make sure the food was served as fresh and politely as possible. For two people who don’t regularly eat “tea” The white chocolate and cranberry scone and the victoria sponge was so fresh and delicious. Will definitely be back. Thanks for the experience. Rick and Miranda. :)
