Legacy At The Grand, York in York

We dined at the Legacy for Valentine's night. Delicious tasting menu with a classic flight of wines. All outstanding. What made the evening was the staff. They clearly enjoy working there and together as a team. Darren, head waiter and Derek, sommelier were absolutely brilliant. Whilst expensive, it felt good value. And a restaurant we will return to.

We had a wonderful dinner in Legacy led by Ahmed Abdalla. When we entered in the hotel we have been escorted by Rob. Then Darren introduced his self to us with a big smile and sat us down to our table, both Darren and Derek has good knowledge about the menu and wine. Really passionate people and very observative. Reece one of the chef came to see us and serve our canape, well explained and detailed. Also big shout out to Ciara, I love the fact that every time she brings the food she put the lamp high so I can take a nice photo. Thank you Ciara Overall we did enjoy our meal, the creativity of the chef combining flavours, textures and applying storytelling behind each dish is amazing. A chef who cooks with heart. We will definitely coming back.

We dined at Legacy to celebrate my wife’s birthday. We both enjoy good food and fine dining, so were very much looking forward to our evening and had high expectations. To say those expectations were exceeded is an understatement, to say the least. We were blown away by every single part of our experience and can’t recommend Legacy highly enough. The food was spectacular. There wasn’t a single course that was anything other than perfect. The chefs adapted a few of the courses to accommodate our tastes without any hesitation. The sommelier was able to recommend a perfect wine and desert wine, which ended up being spot on for the food being served. The restaurant has intentionally limited the covers to make sure of a great atmosphere and it is beautifully furnished to make the host of this amazing building. As faultless as the food was, it wasn’t even the best part. The best part of the experience was Darren, who was an absolutely sensational host. He showed the perfect blend of care, attention and humour and went out of his way at every turn to make sure we had the perfect evening. Not at any point did we feel rushed or that we were putting him out. He is a true asset to the establishment. I would recommend Legacy to anyone and everyone. We hope to be back in the future and I’ve no doubt there’ll be a star or two next to its name by then.

Bit of a spur of the moment mid-week treat, stayed at the Grand and decided to try out their Legacy Restaurant. Glad we did. Although there were only 3 other tables atmosphere was good and the two gentlemen serving were absolutely first rate. Perfect service and just the right amount of interaction, as one stated you're here to enjoy the food and atmosphere not feel uncomfortable. All course were extremely well prepared and cooked. Chef came out to explain the amuse bouche where I think he get's an opportunity to really try stuff out, really appreciated his insight. Some really unusual and interesting ingredients used throughout. The crab, celeriac and lamb dishes all stood out as did the fabulously chocolatey final desert.

Anniversary meal that we will not forget in a hurry. Every course was delicious and the wine paring was perfect. Derek was an outstanding host and sommelier, waiting staff were knowledgeable and Head Chef Ahmed and team are a very talented team of chefs. Any dietary requests were met with an alternative so you do not feel like you are missing out. Highly recommend.

The service was fabulous – professional and efficient, but also really personable and friendly. Good atmosphere too – intimate, relaxed, classy. The food was impressive. We had the 8 course tasting menu (plus canapés) with wine pairing. Every course was excellent – great flavours, well balanced, original combinations, very enjoyable. Given the price, you expect perfection, and it almost delivered. Nearly all the food was perfect – the canapés and desserts were particular stand-outs – but there were a couple of minor shortcomings: the lobster ravioli had brilliant flavours, but unfortunately the pasta was undercooked; and the lamb tasted wonderful, but was slightly overcooked. However, these are just minor niggles – I’ve still got to round it up to a 5 star rating overall, and would definitely recommend it to others.

We had the most amazing tasting menu at Legacy on Saturday evening. Darren and Derek together with their team looked after us superbly. The food was incredible and Derek was the perfect sommelier, recommending some beautiful wines. Nothing was too much trouble at all and cannot recommend this restaurant highly enough. 5 star treatment 👌🏻

Disappointing. Not only did it not live up to the expectation, but there were times when it was actually very poor - to the point of leaving several courses after a sighting nibble. Meat courses were especially bad - unsure what’s going on there but all tasted very odd. I’m sensitive to smells, and could smell the unclean table wear throughout. This and the fishy tasting chicken make me think it’s a cleanliness issue in the kitchen / pot washing department. The above issues aside - the courses were uninspiring and pretty poorly put together. Nowhere near the level expected. Wine taster also distinctly average. Left extremely unhappy - considering the boastful marketing and high expectation - without any effort by the staff to help. For a £500 meal for two, one expects far better. Fortunately I’ve experienced some outstanding restaurants around the world - but the best advice I can give legacy, is to go and sample something closer to home, and see how it’s really done. Rafters (in Sheffield) is superb and a direct comparison; similar tasting style menu, sommelier on the bottles, similar price point, northern England, etc etc. I’m several trips deep with rafters now - it’s consistently excellent and undoubtedly a million miles ahead.

We were staying at The Grand and chose to eat at the Legacy to celebrate our anniversary. The restaurant is a beautiful intimate setting with just 8 tables, well spaced so you have your own space. The welcome and service throughout the evening was warm, welcoming and lighthearted, making it easy to relax and enjoy the experience. We had the 8 course tasting menu and each course, including the three canapes were served with a story and a sense of humour. A shout out for the Porterhouse rolls, we could have taken a bag of those to go for breakfast! We loved the use of local ingredients including honey from the bees living on the roof of the Grand. For a fine dining experience that makes you feel welcome, relaxed and with no expectations that you should be a 'foodie' we would certainly recommend the Legacy.

We have been meaning to dine at Legacy since it first opened but wanted to wait to see if its reviews were consistently excellent before trying it out. Well we certainly weren't disappointed as the standard of cuisine, service and overall ambience were truly remarkable. From the warm welcome when we arrived, starting with scrumptious canapés served by Head Chef, Ahmed Abdalla himself through each incredible course and the perfectly matched wine pairings this was a meal that will live long in the memory. The food was exquisite in taste and presentation with clever flavour combinations and texture to make your taste buds tingle! I should also commend the excellent front of house staff Darren, Ammette, Derek and Lucas who served with humour, knowledge and passion. They are a real credit to Legacy and the Grand Hotel. My wife and I can't recommend this restaurant highly enough and we are sure to return at some point.

Great food and delicious wine pairing. Head Chef Ahmed Abdallas food combinations were a delight - nothing jarred. The crab dish has gone into our all time great dishes. Ahmed came to meet guests and present the amuse bouche - two of them were spectacular. ‘Old school’ sommelier Derek Scaife created a perfectly balanced complimentary wine flight. A delightful treat for food and wine lovers in a calming intimate locale. Support this excellent home of gastronomy! We will return in Autumn to try the game menu.

We had a wonderful 8 course set menu at The Legacy. It’s a small restaurant with only 8 tables, which is a treat in itself as you already feel special in such an intimate setting. My parents dined at Fat Duck and Waterside Inn during this trip and rated the food at The Legacy better than these restaurants. The menu is well balanced and serving of dishes flowed well. Derek the sommelier was great. For foodies, the Legacy is a must try and I hope will become more well known on the fine dining scene so get in quick! This team deserves accolades for such a solid well crafted dining experience and we wish them well!

This was without doubt outstanding. We stayed at the grand hotel and my husband booked this. I live in London and we have eaten at many fine restaurants and this is up there with the best. The wine pairing was perfect courtesy of Derek the sommelier who was lovely. I would definitely recommend this and will return. Thank you for a wonderful experience.
