Once again Carol shows her skills with this homemade Chicken pie.... well I say chicken, also bacon mushroom and leeks with a puff pastry lid... we both ordered it with veg mash and gravy and on a chilly Autumn evening it absolutely hit the comfort food spot ... a great big hug of a plate...

I came for a visit with 6 family members a few days ago, we were accommodated with seating and food even though we showed up not long before the kitchen was closing and on a bank holiday. We were brought three humongous plates for those of us that were eating, filled with delicious food. The lasagne I had came with chips, garlic bread, and salad. It was all hot through and tasted amazing.

We have enjoyed the excellent Sunday lunches here on several occasions. Earlier today we dropped in unexpecedly for a bite with visiting family and once again Carole served us prompt hot delicious food. The two lasagnas looked as good (and as large) as the chili which I have pictured below. Just the right level of heat for my palate and with all the trimmings it still cost less than £9. Andy looks after the cellar and lines with obsessive care so I can recommend his selection of ales. We all said we will be returning.

6 of us had a meal on new years eve and the staff were accommodating and told us up front that the kitchen would close at 7pm. 3 of us ordered belly pork which included a Yorkshire pudding and a selection of market vegetables and we paid at the till before the meal. Unfortunately the dishes were brought out without the Yorkshire puddings and with just green beans for the veg. We were told that the chef had a different menu and that yorkshire puddings were not on that menu. No offer of an alternative was made and the apology seemed a little late/half hearted. This is a shame because the belly pork itself was very tasty (gravy slightly oversalted) and there were no complaints about the vegetarian sausage dish or the risotto also ordered.

We (Two adults and a teenage daughter) have never been here before so decided to give it a go. The pub is clean and tidy with the main bar area having seating and a TV for the sports fans, but it is not too loud and a separate area just away from the bar. The menu is a bit more than a basic pub menu supplimented by a specials board. We had a bowl of nachos between us to start with and the main was served with good timing, not too long a wait but not rushed either. The 'Bloody lovely sausages and mash' two extremely tasting sausages with great mashed potato and gravy. 'Fish pie served with vegetables' the veg perfectly cooked not mushy li,e most pubs and the fish pie had a crumble topping. Scampi and chips perfectly cooked and served with fresh peas. Friendly and attentive staff made us feel very welcome with no hiccups. We have been to other pubs in Wroughton serving food who seem to think they are some they are not and so it was refreshing to eat in a local pub who just want to serve good food. There did seem to be a good selection of beers and ciders on offer but I don't drink so cannot comment on them. We ate on a Wednesday but would like to give one of the theme nights a go.

So let me explain my header as it is slightly confusing. For all of my followers they will know i am firm but fair and certainly not a gourmet food critic. We had booked a restaurant nearby for a meaty chicken and chorizo dish for valentines night and were looking forward to the meal we chose on the set menu UNTIL our local priest reminded us at church on Sunday that meat was a no no. Not a hint of abstinence on this one we checked the menu and to our horror found no fish. My Polska Princess and i googled Food near our home and saw the Check Inn looked traditional and friendly, the menu was to our satisfaction and the price for the set menu very reasonable. So we booked, blind, never seeing the place or tried the food. We booked a table for 18.30 and arrived on time. The pub has a quaint village feeling and set in a quite location from the road but near the M4, However on a chilly February night this was not an issue. We entered the restaurant through the rear door and were promptly seated at a table near the warm fire in a cosy little restaurant and it was all of our wish list rolled into one. Cosy restaurant, clean, friendly staff, an attentive Landlord and steeped in the traditions of what a real country local should be. The Prosseco was the best that my Polska had tasted in a long long time and me being a not too romantic had couple of pints of an awesome beer from somewhere in Eastern Europe that apparently cannot be purchased any nearer than Reading. However i digress as my readers know i always do so i will now get to the point good and could be better but any criticism really should be taken as constructive because we will be definitely be going back and do not want to get barred after our first visit. The starters we had was Baked Camembert and a mix of fresh bread, it was perfectly cooked and was to die for, absolutely spot on, the Princess had Fish under instruction from the previous Sunday with Lemon Potatoes, alas the first thing she did was put a chunk of Lemon in her mouth thinking it was potato which somewhat tainted the meal for a while, however she enjoyed the fish and no complaint there. Me being a rebel had a carnivore sirloin steak which i found very chewy and gristley which is no fault of the kitchen but maybe a word with your butcher might not go amiss. My only criticism was the red wine jus was at first forgotten then came out cold. I did not use it. The desserts we had was Chocolate brownie with ice cream for the missus and cheese and biscuits for me. Both were well received and finished the night off to perfection. Surprised at the price of a glass of red wine to accompany my cheese but in fairness i did ask for a good one. I would seriously recommend this Inn/Restaurant as it is home from home and the icing on the cake for future use is the bar area is dog friendly and you are seconds away from those long walks into the countryside with a hearty meal waiting when you get back. I have suggested this Inn to my dear friends Hannah and Priya and maybe when they break their ties with busy town living they will venture out and give the Check Inn a visit.

We used to attend this pub regularly for a meal and also wine. Although over the past year feel that the general service, food and atmosphere of the pub has gone downhill. We went there recently for a drink. There was a group of people around the bar who were noisy and swore continuously. Of course, this happens often in pubs but unfortunately, the barmaid joined in their discussion and she joined in with the noise and the swearing. I do not think that this behaviour is acceptable for an employee and I shall be writing to Fullers to complain. We shall not be visiting this place again.

Went to the Check Inn last night and both had home made steak and ale pie served with chips !! and vegetables. This must be the worse meal I have ever had. Waited an hour for the food but not bothered about that although they were not busy. My chips consisted of at least 40 percent of crispy scraps The actual chips were difficult to describe pale and just not a chip. The pie was tasteless. When asked if my meal was okay I pointed out all the crispy scraps which I left on my plate to the landlady the reply was you must have got all the end bits and took my plate away!! Needless to say we will not be going there again.

Visited The Check Inn with family on a busy Saturday evening this month. We were greeted by polite and friendly staff and promptly shown to our table away from the main bar. Our food took a little while to arrive, but when we did we fully appreciated the wait as it was all cooked freshly to order, piping hot and absolutely delicious. The veg was cooked to perfection, the meat was tender and melt-in-the-mouth and there was more than enough on our plates to satisfy our appetites. Desserts were out of this world and generous in portion size. The waiting staff couldn't do enough to make sure our visit was enjoyable and came several times to 'Check-Inn' with us to make sure that the food was ok and to see whether we needed anything else.Live music was scheduled for 9pm but because the band had set up in plenty of time, the landlady came over the check with the diners that we were all happy for them to start early so that it didn't interrupt our meal. The music was brilliant and not so loud that it disrupted our conversation in the dining room.Highly rated - we'll definitely be back much more often! Would love this to be my local.

We went for Sunday lunch here for 2 family members birthdays, the staff were friendly enough, I don't know where the new owners have come from but the service showed a lot of inexperience with a sting of little things resulting in us all saying we wouldn't go back.Menus were handwritten on scraps of A5 paper full of spelling mistakes and crossing outs, we had to ask for additional veg as we were only given 4 small bowls between 11 of us, when asking for mustard for the beef we were given hot dog mustard, drinks were missed off the order. As mentioned we were there for 2 birthdays and as a surprise asked to have candles in 2 of the desserts, after taking the dessert order the waitress came back to the table and openly and loudly asked which 2 dessert needed the candle, she came back not once but twice to clarify this...there goes the surprise. One of the desserts which was eton mess came out with the fruit pipping hot where it had obviously been put in the microwave to defrost. Then to top it off we ordered 6 desserts from the menu and 1 plain ice cream, when we received the bill they had charged us for 11 desserts, they did remove the extra ones when pointed out however we still ended up paying the same price for just the ice cream as we did for the full desserts. I have had sunday lunch a number of times here in the past under the previous owners which has always been lovely so was very disappointed to see this change.

Five of us went there for lunch. It didn't seem particularly busy. We were advised that all food was seasonal and the menu was therefore limited and that all food was cooked to order, we were told that the meals would take a while. He was right, we waited quite a long time for our food.We had to go and find our own salt and pepper- borrowed from another table, and when we asked for brown sauce we were told that they had run out.The meals were ok:We ordered the ham egg and chips, beef burger, omelettes and a cheese baguette. The portions were generous but my pet hate is chips made from unpeeled potatoes. I love chips, but not these. Three of us barely touched the chips. So on those grounds alone I will not be returning.

Feel like this review is more than necessary. Me and a couple of colleges stayed over at the check inn a couple of weeks back whilst working in Swindon. We decided to try out the Thai food on offer. I personally had never tried Thai before so didn't know what to expect, Steve the landlord took time to explain the dishes to us thoroughly so we knew what we were ordering. Absolutely unreal, tried many of the dishes over the couple of weeks we stayed there and each and every one was absolutely delicious, you can tell in every spoonful or bite that only the best ingredients are used in their food. Still tho I wasn't fully convinced this was something special tucked away in Swindon, So I decided to go out for a Thai dinner with the missus back home just to compare the quality. Was utterly disappointed and it was safe to say it wasn't a patch on what the check inn has to offer. A different level all together. This may seem very pro check inn but truth is it is because everything from the accommodation down to food was tip top. Well done to all the staff. Faultless.

My husband and I fancied a Thai meal as a treat today. We travelled to Wroughton and were very much looking forward to a nice leisurely lunch. On arrival we ordered drinks and decided to eat in the bar side to be relaxed. The pub was strangely empty for a Saturday. We ordered prawn satay which was ok, a duck dish that was not a soup but should have been and coconut rice. The food was not warm, only in the centre which indicates microwave. The noodles had a slimy feel and were covered with iceberg lettuce? Reminded me of Gordon Ramsey kitchen nightmares. My husband ate his... He was hungry and I left mine. Afterwards he went to pay and commented on the food. We were apparently trying it on and my husband was ok but I was the problem?! I had left the building! My husband took back my plates as they had not been touched. He gave up and threw my husbands card at him telling him to get out! We were fully prepared to pay for what was eaten and drunk.I have rarely give poor feedback but this is to be avoided. I am concerned about our stomachs tonight. A real shame as we have been through a tough time and simply wanted a nice day out.Ended up in wetherspoons with a cheese toasted!

We have friends who don't like to experiment with food so its either Chinese or Thai. They recommended this place. The location is a bit out of the way - but that's not a problem for us to travel. I can imagine if you were local this would be really appealing. Its a large pub that serves Thai. I have to admit sitting at a basic narrow pub table that just about holds 4 beer mats and a menu holder doesn't bode well when you order a host of dishes. It was cramped. The serving dishes had to be served up all in one to make way for anything else arriving on the table to make space. The food was good to be honest - but the whole cramped pub atmosphere just didn't do it for me. I like to have all the dishes on the table and pick and mix. So depending on your eating habits you will like or not like this place.

Having seen my wife suffer an appalling Mothers Day due to hormonal excess in our teenage daughter I thought I'd take her out to dinner. Having played darts there I knew the ale was excellent and the restaurant was busy for a Monday night, the menu looked inviting too so off we went. I could after all drown my sorrows if it all went south. Glad we booked as the restaurant was full so after a beer we sat down and chose the food. It was excellent, not smothered in MSG and had the look of being prepared by a caring chef in the kitchen. Jungle curry was hot but not overly and my squid was amazing. Egg and rice noodles as sides were brilliant and the different flavours on back-to-back tastings were remarkable. I didn't need to drown my sorrows, so celebrated a successful meal out with more ale and a single malt to finish.Give it a try, didn't cost the earth either.

Birthday treat, we love Thai food and after reading all the reviews about the food here we were really looking forward to it. However, we were a little disappointed, the food was pretty average. We both had meals that we are familiar with from a number of other restaurants and in comparison we found it to be quite bland. We would normally only give a review after three visits to ensure that the review was fair. Not this time, we would not use this restaurant again. Not that there was anything bad about it, it was just not good enough all round.I also have to agree with some of the other reviewers about the service, there was no one serving at the bar or in the restaurant when we arrived. It was a good few minutes before any staff appeared. That said when they arrived we were served drinks and our order taken and delivered efficiently.

My husband and I visited one lunchtime between Christmas and new year. He had been on a previous occasion with friends and really enjoyed it and built it up quite a lot so I was really looking forward to trying it. When we parked at the rear car park the door was locked so we had to walk round the front to get in. As it was raining heavily and really windy we didn't appreciate it. The fire wasn't on and it was quite chilly inside the pub so it would have been nice to warm ourselves. We each ordered something from the Thai menu as the English food on offer was a bit like what you would expect at a greasy spoon. I had sweet and sour chicken. The egg fried rice, which you have to order separately, was superb. However, my chicken was very bland and it was very dry at the edges. You know how raw chicken goes dry and hard at the edges if you've left it out uncovered - it reminded me of that. In contrast, my husband had a pork dish and it was delicious and very flavoursome.

Let's start by stating that the Thai food here was excellent. Sadly, the three stars reflects the service. The Check in has a basic English and extensive Thai menu. The four of us agreed that the food was excellent. Perfect Thai. Our issue was with the service and to a degree, the venue. The restaurant was cold. It was a cold wet day, and a warm meal was appealing. Unfortunately, it was rather chilly in there. The service also let things down badly. The lady on the bar had developed the art of avoiding eye contact until she was ready to a fine art, and also seemed to have more time for obvious regulars than visitors like us. The girl in the restaurant also seemed to prefer to be in the kitchen than out with the punters. As a result, service was slow, and getting drinks to our table required a visit to the bar. My hope is that this was a one off situation, as the food was so good. However, you are paying for the whole experience, and based on this visit, the service does need to improve.

When we got home, we decided not to wait for 6.00, our usual time, & it was well worth the aggravation from our son when he got in & we told him that we were sorry but there was none left.Friday lunchtime is now a regular visit but we order more to stop our son being upset.

I left the country a few months ago and moved to Thailand. I have to agree with previous posts. The food here is about authentically Thai as you can get!The food is fantastic. Fresh ingredients and cooked to order. I have tried the entire menu and have yet to find something I Dont like. The beer and alcohol selection is amazing and kept well. The staff are warm and friendly. I would recommended this place to anyone. This post has been a long time coming. Best Thai food in the area.Enjoy!

Having been to Thailand a few times I have experienced the fantastic food first hand and I can honestly say that the food served here does not disappoint and more than holds its own. All down to of course having an exceptionally talented Thai cook in the kitchen !!!!! Service is good and the atmosphere warm and inviting. Gilding the lily is a fine selection of real ales. Living within 7 minutes walking distance of this fine hostely makes it very difficult indeed not to overdose on all that is on offer.

I grew up in the Far East - this is the best Thai food I've eaten since being out there. Authentic, fresh and delicious. Friendly service and the waitress was even kind enough to show us how they carve the carrot flowers they garnish the dishes with. I'm going to take my parents as they were with me in the Far East - and I'm certain they will love it to!

I have been here before when visiting Swindon, so booked a table for a business meeting.A great choice of Tai food and was obviously cooked fresh and to order. Both our meals were delicious and plentiful and we had a job to get anywhere near finishing our meals. The staff were very pleasant and attentive without being in your face.Being a pub as well, there is the usual vast choice of drinks.A big car park adjoins the pub, so no problem parking! All in all......a great Tai meal at a decent price!

Lovely little inn on the outskirts of Swindon with surprisingly good Thai food. It is somewhat difficult to find but worth the effort. Ample parking when we visited. Service could be better,; we were kept waiting for our drinks order and from order our food. But once things got rolling, food came quickly. Price reasonable.

I assistant manage a nearby pub and need somewhere to drink which isn't the pub I work in as if you walk in to work you get asked to work!, I have two places and this is one of them.Firstly they sell ESB which is a bloody good pint, and from what I can tell they keep it very very well, always crystal clear, always holds a head (which means clean glasses too) and always tastes spot on! Secondly the service is always friendly and the bar section (which feels like a good ol' pub) is homely and invitingly with the restaurant feeling private enough yet equally inviting. And thirdly, I don't visit by any means regularly, just at lest once every two or three weeks, whenever my friends and my shifts line up but no matter when I go, I am never disappointed.I have tried the food to but though I know I enjoyed it, it was long enough ago that I cannot remember it in any detail enough to comment other than, it lead me to recommend it to my dad who then went with friends and thoroughly enjoyed it!Great place, definite recommendation!

My partner and I decided to book a table as we were staying at a nearby hotel and we really enjoy Thai food. The mixed starter came quickly and was very tasty. We decided against the set meal for 2 as thought they were a bit pricey at £24pp so instead went for a main course each and side of rice. I struggled to eat all my beef massaman curry which was lovely. My partner had a duck dish which was also really tasty. We had no room for coffee or desserts. We had two drinks each and the bill came to £54 which we thought was very reasonable. We had a few drinks in the bar before leaving. The female bar staff were friendly along with the lovely Thai staff. We would have appreciated some comfier chairs in the bar area. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who enjoys Thai food.

We stayed at Alexandra house last year and were told this would be a fantastic place to eat in . It turned out to to be very different . We asked for hot water to drink and the waiter brought water from the top. The food was horrid and cold and took forever to arrive!! Very unfriendly too. Maybe they were having a bad day! Will never go back

Having visited the restaurant on a monthly basis and managed to tick the majority of mouth watering menu choices off the list, I would ask anyone with a love for good and authentic Thai food to find anywhere better!I would also like to comment on a previous review to note that in all my visits to the Check Inn and being female, I have not found the facilities to be anything but clean and presentable, maybe a one off!

The Check Inn serves the most amazing Thai food I have ever eaten. The menu is varied and contains lots of seafood and dishes you might not expect. It's fairly priced and the portion sizes are good. My husband and I both agree the food was truly delicious. Well spiced and unbelievably tasty. I will say this isn't the kind of place you go to if you want a fancy restaurant experience. It is essentially a pub that serves food. The main pub area is a little shabby and I agree the toilets could do with a bit of a scrub. You certainly wouldn't get dressed up to go here. However, I will be returning and will likely use the takeaway service too.

My brother and I have been visiting this place for years at lunchtimes when we transfer our mum from Cardiff to Essex and vice versa. There is an extensive menu of delicious well cooked Thai food at reasonable prices so we always look forward to our next visit. The menu rates the heat of their dishes with one two or three chillies. They do other food too for less adventurous eaters. Friendly and helpful staff

The ladies toilet in restaurant area was disgusting. Sink filthy and plughole black. Window ledge dirty, open bin with no disposal facility for ladies sanitary items. Old battered bar table and stool served as make up and babychange area. Baby highchairs piled up in corner next to toilet bowl (parents would you want your child sitting in one of these) and filthy fingermarks on both inner and outer doors obviously never cleaned - maybe toilets like this are acceptable in Thailand but in this country we expect a different standard.Starters were ok but think they may have been bought in frozen.Main courses were much better and large portions.Did not have desserts.Service was inattentive.Would we return? No

Outstanding food which was a great surprise as I've never been to a Thai place inside a pub before, but it was great! The added bonus for me was that if you want desert (which I did) you have a choice of pub deserts and not Thai/Eastern deserts which I've never really enjoyed. This is our new favourite Thai place and tops our old favourite from Bristol (Thai Basil in Thornbury). Keep up the good work!!

When I read the other reviews we were looking forward to going here while on a weekend stay in the area. Big mistake. If people say this is best Thai then they obviously haven't been to many. Service was ok, though slow to clear tables. We ordered a mix of starters and some soup as a second course. Soups arrived first (?) followed immediately by starters! We had to try and eat both without any getting cold! Then the mains. Oh dear, please don't order no 32, it was disgusting and inedible. Won't be returning in a hurry.

We went to the Check Inn with friends for a Thai meal. Don't be put off by first impressions because you walk into what seems like an old english boozer with tables set up for pub grub. There are no fancy trimmings just lovely Thai food at very sensible prices. We will definitely eat there again.

Authentic fresh Thai food , have been here a few times now and have really enjoyed the food , they do handle smaller groups better and unfortunately some of the mains are more like starters , ie the jungle curry .

Great meal, it all tasted delicious. Good selection of dishes available on the menu. I think the prices are fair, considering the food appears to be prepared and cooked freshly - the vegetables were still nice and crunchy, not ruined. The seafood was also cooked perfectly. The beer selection was pretty good, seemingly from larger breweries - though certainly a broader selection than other pubs I know of.... The service was prompt an polite, and I would certainly be happy to visit again and recommend to others.

Quite a contrast between the bar area and the well presented restaurant area. Crisp white table linen and a relaxed atmosphere. The food was delicious and very well presented. There is a varied menu to suit all tastes. They even do take away and we will certainly give that a go at a later date. A little gem right on our doorstep.

Fab Thai food, so tasty and all fresh ingredients. The food was beautifully presented and tasted even better. A group of 4 of us went for lunch and were not disappointed. Having the 2 separate menus is a little odd and the pub itself had a slight odour which was unappealing (smelt like wet dog?) but the food was so so good.

I have been to Thailand a few times, we even did some cookery class's during our stays, so to find out that a Pub in Wroughton near where we live does authentic Thai food was to difficult to resist, and we are glad we didn't resist. We called in quite early on a weekday evening, the welcome was good and the service excellent. We ordered, and within 10 mins our starter was served piping hot and cooked to perfection. The mains turned up perfectly timed and were absolutely delicious, all fresh ingredients and the portions plentyful. If it wasn't that I was in a typical English pub, you wouldn't know you the difference between the food here and what you get in Thailand. A real gem of a find, they also do takeaway, which you do have to collect. Prices are what you would expect, however, the food is well above expectations.

We've never eaten off the English part of the menu, but the Thai food here is great, and it's well worth a visit. It's often quiet, which can feel a little awkward as it feels like the bar staff are listening in to your conversations, but the food makes up for that!

Went here tonight and felt compelled to review it which never happens... Although we had to leave early we really enjoyed it, the food was outstanding - very fragrant without being overpowering and good medium-large portions, also very well presented on par with an up market/expensive restaurant. Nice big range of dishes to choose from as well. We sat in the restaurant area - I have to be honest it's not as posh as it looks in the pics (syill feels like a pub) but was nice and cosy and this really isn't a negative, I just didn't know what to expect. Would thoroughly enjoy bringing my friends here for some food and a couple of drinks, will be back!

Been to this pub several times now, the food is genuinely Thai (if you know what to ask for), always very tasty and great value for money. I haven taken a few friend now who gave it their seal of approval. If you are more interested in the food than the decor (pub atmosphere rather than restaurant) then this is definitely one to visit.

Also shared the stir fried aubergine dish which was delicious. The curry was quite spicy but i love that. Great for warming you up on a cold day!Highly recommended, this was perhaps my 8th visit, and the closest thing to the real thing if not, just as good as the food I've had in Thailand.

When friends said there was a Thai cook working in a pub in Wroughton I didn't believe them. The food is some of the most delicately flavoured Thai food I have had outside of Thailand. The pub restaurant is a bit cramped but that is my only grumble. Recommended for authentic Thai food.

Just got home. Great service and wonderful food. We were out to celebrate my wife's birthday. I had my 15 yr old daughter and 67 yr old father in law. We all loved it. We weren't sure of what to order. Great explanation by the landlord. Proper good food, really tasty, good service and lots of smiles. Good to see a village pub doing so well. Keep up the good work and we will be back to try some other dishes.

Whilst visiting my son and his family we went greyhound racing at Swindon one Saturday morning. It was the first time my 6 year old granddaughter and 2 and a half grandson had ever been to a meeting, my granddaughter loved watching the dogs whilst my grandson was more interested in his bacon sandwich. The stadium is run down but was talking with several greyhound owners and over the far side they have already begun to build a new stadium
