The Chancel in Plymouth

The Chancel has been one of our favourite places to eat in Plymouth for many years. During Covid and a bit longer they’ve been delivering or preparing for collection. Without much thought or any foreknowledge we walked down this evening hoping it might up and running for their traditional bistro food and good wines. Very disappointed therefore to find it dark, empty and will a To Let sign. No hint that there might still be an online service. Pity and we’re sad. Many dozens of happy memories.

We arranged to meet some old friends that we hadn't seen for a while for a good old catch on Saturday just gone 22nd, we were meet by a young waitress who seemed pleasant enough and proceeded to usher us downstairs to our table. The hole experience from start to finish was from a scene out of faulty towers, the food was average but the overall front of house service mostly the lady manager was abrupt and unprofessional, very disappointed. Personally don't bother

Chancel never fails to please us. When I’m Plymouth, my friend and I always head here for lunch. The tapas dishes are just so tasty, decent size portions too. We always have a bottle of wine, would be rude not to, which is always so delicious. The staff are lovely too. Can’t wait til our next visit.

We popped along here for a romantic meal on Saturday evening. There was a bit of a problem with the online booking system so I called up and reserved a table for 6:30pm Parking was nice and easy, a small council run car park opposite and also pay and display on street just outside. We arrived a little early to a friendly greeting and were seated in a nice secluded area at the back of the restaurant. Nice ambiance and quiet background music. We had a bottle with candle placed on our table which added to the atmosphere. Waiting staff were friendly and we ordered 2 glasses of Shiraz at a very reasonable price. Menu was nice and varied, something for all tastes. We're on Keto diet so opted for the pork belly and extra veg, there was no problem customising our dish and everything was written down to ensure no errors. Food was served in about 10 minutes and was absolutely delicious. Perfectly cooked, flavoursome and the pork just pulled apart. Veg had plenty of bite and the gravy topped it off beautifully. Was nice to have a 'comfort check' too, we rarely seem to see that these days. Finished off with a flat white and a glass of water. The bill came to under £50 for the both of us and we were happy to add a decent tip due to the outstanding service and quality of food. We will gladly return again soon ❤️

A small friendly restaurant with really good service. My friend and I both had the same. Chicken with Madeira sauce and fresh vegetables, Crème Brûlée. Best meal we have had since arriving in Devon and Cornwal. Visit this lovely place to eat. Right in the centre of Plymouth.

Although a 5 minute walk from the Barbican this restaurant deserves to do well. The food was excellent, and well priced, and the service helpful and attentive. We will definitely go back, next time we’re in Plymouth.

We dined this evening and have to praise the wonderful server. She was unobtrusive but attentive and lovely to chat to. High praise for her. The goulash and paté were both good. My husband loved his creme brulee. We enjoyed our organic wine too.

We came for my daughters 21st birthday. They were very attentive . Nothing was too much trouble the 3 course meal we had for 9 of us was perfect. They even put a birthday banner on the wall and a card was waiting at the table for her. Definitely recommend.

Today was our meal at The Chancel (on the go) to celebrate 3 birthdays for ages 70yrs, 50yrs and 33 yrs and once again they outdid themselves. Being a party of 10 we chose our meals in advance and sent in a ‘list’ of names with who wanted which 1st and 2nd course. Sadly I didn’t take pictures of the meals although I really should have as everything was cooked and presented to perfection, mind you, it always is and we’ve never once had a disappointment when dining here. If you want a meal at a restaurant that will do their very best for their diners then you really should visit The Chancel (on the go).

The most fantastic tapas I’ve had since Madrid 2019! Would highly recommend anyone to come here, for a party of 6 we finished all 25 dishes plus they decorated the restaurant at an hours notice to celebrate my friends 25th Birthday and bought him a slice of cake with a candle. Thank you to our hostess Naomi for beautiful service - 10/10 would recommend for anyone looking for good service, great food and immaculate vibes. Come to Chancel, Plymouth!

First time ever leaving a review but this had to be done due to the awful experiences I had here. It was bad the first time but I thought I’d try again in case it was a one off. Rude staff, lady owner in particular was extremely rude with absolutely 0 social skills (just look at the way she responds to reviews on here). The other apparent owner was clearly drunk and uninterested. Will never return.

Booked a month ago. With a Red letter Gift Voucher. 4 hours before booking informed they will not accept voucher. Thanks very much. Apparently new business. Same people running it though and still advertised on the Red Letter Dining out.

Limited menu (good), food didn't come to quickly (good), reasonable presentation, enjoyed the food (important), attentive service, good vale. Based on this, I'll be back!

Didn’t know whether they were going to be open but when we drove down the cul de sac we saw various people coming out with large food bags and the lights were on inside with several customers around the bar and maybe three tables occupied. We were welcomed on entry, the lady behind the bar could not have been more helpful. The menu had a few items sold out - presumably running down the fresh stuff before the long holiday. We had some big glasses of the hearty house red (Syrah) and various combinations of the three dishes for £15 lunch and separately a Stilton/walnut and lair salad. The desserts were good too. Throughout there was a stream of customers coming in to pick up pre-ordered and bagged Christmas dinners. It was good to see the activity. The nearby pub on the corner was pretty well empty and it’s obvious that several other closeby food places were closed or silent. We shall be back to use Chancel(on the go) again very soon.

We were visiting Plymouth with a group of friends for the weekend. We were attracted by the fact it is a family run restaurant rather than a chain. It did not disappoint! It was SO good we went back the following day! Lovely friendly staff, a menu that was all fresh and cooked to order. From starters, to mains to desserts it was absolutely fantastic. We sat upstairs on the first evening and we’re in the basement on the second evening both were great. We were not ignored when sat downstairs and we felt very well looked after on both evenings. Absolute compliments to the chefs - just perfect!

Lovely place for a lunch or evening meal, cosy, nice menu, amazing TAPAS, delightful, quirky, not stuffy, welcoming, great service, lovely selection of wines, delicious food for all tastes and whole experience is great value for money, a hidden GEM in plymouth. Three of my family pod had their birthday this week in lockdown, so we decided to treat ourselves to the three course for £20 meal delivery option. We were SO impressed. The food was tasty, the dishes ceramic and quality presentation, and the instructions easy. It did not feel at all like a take away delivery, it felt like a special home dining experience. We will definitely use it again soon. Wow!

The Chancel ofrece comidas para llevar los viernes y sábados, un menú limitado pero 3 platos para 19. 95 no puedes equivocarte. Pide tu comida y recoge, las instrucciones para calentarla son sencillas y muy claras. Simplemente tenía surf & turf excelente, tanta langosta tenía un trabajo para terminarlo. Muy recomendable.

My Mum and I went to the Chancel for lunch and had a wonderful experience. From the minute we arrived we were welcomed warmly. I had the Fish Stew which was spectacular! Such a memorable dish I would go back for again. When we left we had a lovely informative conversation with the waiter about different types of gin. Overall I could not recommend this place more highly. Every time I come to visit my Mum we will make a visit.

We have visited the Chancel many times and always found staff first class. Although both meals were acceptable the goulash was good, steak does not appear to be of the same standard as previous visits. Steps to ground level and toilets are interesting to negotiate, toilets were disgusting smelly mouldy very disappointed.

Visited Wednesday 4 March for my birthday treat from my wife, arrived bit early but that was no problem shown to our table for two straight away,young lady gave us a few minutes to get settled then gave us the menu and took our drink order.Gave us a few mins again before taking our food order. we both had starters which arrived very quick and very well presented. Mains came out very quickly and very hot and plenty of it, we both had desserts which were lovely.I had a red wine (large) and my wife had a medium white both very nice wine. The restaurant is very small but very cosy and intimate, staff very nice and chatty,service excellent,food excellent,wine delicious. Overall brilliant evening,first visit, but not last will be going back soon. Good value for money,if it is a quiet and intimate evening you need then try this place.

We've been to the Chancel before, but never for Sunday lunch. We have to say this is one of the best Sunday roast dinners out we have ever had.We both had the Lamb shank which was cooked beautifully, served with a generous amount of fresh veg and gorgeous roast potatoes and yorkshire pudding.I would thoroughly recommend this restaurant. We will most definitely return.

Ambiente agradable para un almuerzo ligero. La comida era excelente, pan integral muy fresco y una ensalada de buen tamaño para acompañarlo. Algunas mesas están un poco apretadas y cerca de las paredes. Recomiendo reservar su mesa para asegurarse de esto. Buen valor y servicio.

I had never eaten Tapas before but bought on Groupon and took my daughter for lunch. With her help we had 6 and they were lovely. Have bought another of the same deal and we are going again, can’t wait loved having different dishes

I have visited here numerous time and the food and service is always excellent. Today I took my Mum for Afternoon Tea for her birthday. It was outstanding! The table looked really special, set with a pretty cloth, fresh flowers and matching crockery. 5 freshly prepared sandwiches, soft crumbly scones with copious amounts of jam and cream, 4 different sweet treats and strawberries. All served with good quality tea and coffee. This is brilliant value at £20 for 2 people. We will definitely be back

Mi esposo y otra pareja se almorzaron en diciembre pasado en el Chancel. Ubicado en el bullicioso centro de Plymouth, el interior es un ambiente agradable y arbolado y tenía un variado menú de ofrendas tradicionales de comida británica. Al final, pescado y papas fritas ganaron para nuestros amigos y mi esposo con un pastel de pescado para mí. Encantadora compañía y agradable almuerzo.

We visited the Chancel on the 9th February, this was our second time for the Sunday experience.

Had lunch with a friend , firstly it was cold everyone was sat eating in there coats ! Ordered 6 tapas dishes for our starters to share and placed our order for our steak at the same time. The tall dark hair young man seemed to have difficulty, he asked us questions but clearly did not listen he got many things wrong with our 2 orders ! Our starters was brought out along side our mains !! We was told 6 tapas is a main in there, so that’s why it came out together He Was unapologetic , did not receive a warm welcome at all . You can’t fault the food it was top notch and good value ! But sorry chefs your waiters and front of house certainly for our visit made no effort and let you down food was fantastic but I won’t rush back asI for a 1st time visit upon reading reviews have to say very disappointed!! , there was a big chap white glasses sat at bar on laptop whilst the only 1person serving seating and bar . I went to the bar so the chap with glasses could scan a groupon voucher from my phone ! No eye contact, face like a bear chewing a wasp! We didn’t feel we wanted to stay drink and chat it was so cold and unwelcoming and rushed honestly two guys both had faces like a bag of spanner’s disappointing visited 10/02/20.

Vine con mi esposo para nuestro aniversario en octubre pasado y nuevamente nos encanta la comida y la atención del personal. En una ocasión, cuando no nos gustó dónde nos ubicaron, preguntamos y nos mudamos de inmediato.

What a lovely little find this restaurant was. Got it off a search engine whilst staying in Plymouth. Nice easy feel to the place, good choice of food on the menu and enough wine to choose from. Meet and greet was really good and the place wasn’t to busy which meant we could have conversations with the staff who were all good. The food was well worth the money, not the cheapest or the dearest in the area and we thought we had good value for our money. Would definitely recommend this restaurant if you are visiting Plymouth and we would definitely go back for another visit...

Would like to report on the food, but walked in at about 1pm to be told “we’re fully booked”. No sign of packed tables... I accep it was New Year’s Eve and the kitchen may have been busy with prep, but I would prefer honesty.

The food is very good, the atmosphere? The first time a friend and I ate here we were shown to a quiet corner away from the bar, which was fine. This time we were the only customers in the early evening and were seated between the bar and the front door. Convenient for the staff,, no doubt, but not good for conversation - especially not "deep and meningfuls".

I have been here many times, the food is fantastic I had the swordfish, best I have ever tasted,husband had the carbonara, he said it was wonderful, I cannot recommend this restaurant enough, it's my favourite in Plymouth, the staff are so lovely and helpful.

This was an unexpected lovely surprise. On a visit to Plymouth for my husband‘s work I found this little restaurant online and we took a chance. Within walking of our hotel easy breezy… No frills, maybe the lighting could come down a wee bit, service great, food amazing. Simple flavor, light cream sauce on my chicken and veggies, practically licked the plate! As you can see! Hubs loved his Goulash. A little gem!

On Friday evening we had a booking for a party of 4 people. We attended the restaurant and were directed to a table that only had 3 places set; we were quite disappointed to find the table hadn't even been set properly for the booking.

Came here pre-theatre to eat. Eaten in a lot of pubs recently who charge restaurant prices for their food, some quite enjoyable but here was a noticeable difference in the quality and cooking of the food you would expect from a good restaurant, although similarly priced to some pubs! We had starters of fish plate and garlic mushrooms, with mains of fish pie, lasagne and carbonara. Delicious flavours, best restaurant I've visited in a while - had a quiet table in an area above the bar. Friendly, knowledgeable staff, will be recommending to friends.

Had a thoroughly enjoyable experience last night. Friends of ours bought us a voucher as a thank you and having not been here before we were unsure what to expect.

Ate here this week having found this great restaurant on my last business trip to Plymouth. The food is great and I absolutely love the garlic mushroom starter.

We came on Saturday for my wife's birthday and really enjoyed the evening. The food as always was fabulous.The staff are very welcoming you always feel special here and not just a number.

Have been twice now in the last six weeks, both times for an occasion.

My husband I went to the Chancel last Thursday evening. We had our normal steak meal which was cooked to perfection. Service was excellent as always. We saw they were advertising Afternoon Teas and decided to book for Monday afternoon. It was an absolute treat. When we arrived the table was all prepared with nice crockery. Good choice of sandwiches in lovely fresh bread. Scones were still warm and served with plenty of jam and cream. The little cakes were super too. Cannot recommend this highly enough especially as you can purchase vouchers. At £10 per head it is an absolute steal.

Called in on Friday evening without booking. Made to feel very welcome and seated and served promptly. Food was very good and the wine excellent. I will be looking to come back next year when I return to Plymouth

Looking for a mid-afternoon dinner we found this gem. Wasn't too busy, looked like it was locals having drinks & nibbles and we were the only ones eating a main meal. It was nice to have some background noise whilst we ate. The food was top notch, decent servings and lovely flavours, served in perfectly timed manner, would happily eat here again in future. My wife is Coeliac and the majority of the menu was adaptable, another tick in the box. Waiting staff very chatty and friendly, topped off with good service.

Visited The Chancel while on business in Plymouth. Was looking for a homely non chain venue and this restaurant ticks all the right boxes. Really good meal and excellent friendly service. Will definitely visit again when here.

We have held a family celebration at The Chancel and we were seated in a room as a private party. The ambience was excellent and the staff were very attentive without being intrusive. The wine and food were delicious. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone.and will be definitely returning again when we visit Plymouth next year. We all, fifteen of us had a thoroughly enjoyable evening, many thanks to Paula and her staff.

There was a strange smell in the place - damp? The service was appalling. Bread was forgotten. A jug of water was not brought. The sugar for the coffee had solidified in the pot. My plate had a dirty fingerprint on it. I had to keep approaching the bar area to get waitress assistance as no one came near us. What has happened to this previously lovely little bistro? I will not be going back. Shame.

Years of eating at The Chancel ,and still we return. Tapas lunch again this week, as always great food cooked by Paula no less, great service, new waitress only second day. All was as expected very good, no it was excellent. Booked another couple of visits whilst there.

As ever great food, pleasant and helpful service on a quiet weekday evening, alas the atmosphere was ruined by the loud and swearing customer sat behind us; I wouldn’t normally review to whine about another customer but this one spent his time bragging about how he knew the owner, Jamie, and the subsequent discount he would get whilst ruining the atmosphere for several couples trying to enjoy the moment ... of course I’ll return (in the hope that he hasn’t taken up residence) but please, Jamie, have a word and set some expectations for your mates’ behaviour.

No es tan fácil de encontrar como deberían ser: su sitio web dice que están en Royal Parade pero no dan ningún número. Hay, como cabría esperar de un bar de vinos, una muy buena lista de vinos de diferentes tamaños de vidrio y por botella. Y la comida también era buena. Mi ensalada de cangrejo fue excelente. As the title says the food is fantastic and the staff are friendly, welcoming and have good knowledge of wines. I would go there every day if I could!

El Chancel atendió a mi suegro; atendían a un gran número de personas, la comida era excelente pero el servicio y la hospitalidad eran absolutamente increíbles. No puedo alabar a Paula, Jamie y su personal lo suficiente. Estamos extremadamente agradecidos y recomendaríamos The Chancel a cualquiera. Regresamos al día siguiente y volveremos de nuevo.

Food was superb - the waitress was excellent her positive, bright enthusiastic nature was enchanting

My husband and I visited this restaurant last night for my birthday celebration.

My brother and I went in there yesterday (06/07/19) and had a great time. They have an excellent selection of wines and the staff are very knowledgeable of them. Prices are fair of a specialised place and the service was exceptional. I have been there a couple of times with my wife so was quick to recommend it to my brother we were not disappointed.
