The Central Cafe in Cornwall, Isles of Scilly

I can't put into words how bad this meal was and how extremely disappointed we all were. For many a year we as a family revisit Mevagissy as this was our parents favourite part of Cornwall. It's bad enough that all of their favourite haunts are closing or changing hands, their favourite fish and chip shop is rock bottom of the list. We have never been so disappointed with any food but this Wednesday I wanted to refuse payment but my brother wouldn't let me. The batter was burnt the fish inside was dry, my sisters plaice tasted funny but that was probably down to the stale fat it was cooked in, all the chip tasted like they had been over cooked, they were dry and crisp. My brother ordered ham egg and chips, after about 15mins he was told they had run out of ham but he could have an extra egg, when the bill arrived he got charged an extra £4 for one bloody egg, that's disgusting.

The hoomans stopped in here when we visited Mevagissy. They had fish finger sandwiches and from the sounds they made they very much enjoyed them. I was treated to a side of bacon! The lady that served us was lovely and it was no bother cooking my bacon, she even asked if I’d like it crispy! 🌞🐾❤️

Wife and I had a of panini each with drinks, wife could not have a decaf cappuccino so she had make do with a instant coffee. Panini’s were small and lacking in fillings. Very expensive for what we had. Will not go back anytime soon.

Just visited this place for the worse meal I have ever had in my life. Chose sausage and mash that turned up as two things that kind of resembled sausages on a bed of something, I assumed someone had boiled some potatoes and then hit them until they broke up, no cream or butter or milk. It also came with a jug of gravy that needed cutting with a knife. I paid the exorbitant price of £8.50 for this. We completed our " meal" with two teas one cup had lipstick on it one saucer was so dirty and damaged it needed binning. Having been grumped and growled at a total of three times by the extremely rude woman behind the counter we made our exit and vowed never to return to this awful place again

Really, really disappointing. My haddock and chips tasted, and looked like it had come straight out of a frozen Birds Eye box. My wife and Son both had a panini, which neither finished. I've eaten here many times before, and never had a meal there as bad as this, maybe it was just bad timing...

Fresh, light and super tasty, we stopped here for fish and chips and ate in as we didn’t want to fight with the seagulls. Loved our lunches and will be back next time we visit.

Had just one evening meal here....fish and chips as you do at a seaside resort. It was delicious and we concluded that the chips were not your usual frozen type. Staff verry friendly

Food really disappointing- one small bowl of tasteless chowder served with one slice of cheap thin sliced white bead and tuna sandwich which was made with same cheap bread (better sandwich from Aldi for 99p) with one cup of tea £15.50 - disgusting!

On the outside it looks appalling and the lady serving was lovely. But ……. The haddock and chips arrived. The chips were dead on arrival and just tasteless and over cooked. The fish I presume was frozen and wasn’t very nice. The mushy peas had been played with - either watered down or something to get extra portions. Bearing in mind the price it actually makes Rick Stein in Padstow look cheap ! To cap it off I heard the chef shouting over to the waitress telling her “these chips are rubbish !” I think that says it all that they are prepared to serve this awful food and have the cheek to charge high prices purely because of the location !

Where do I start! Queued for more than 15 minutes with 2 customers in front of me but that's not the worst of it! Got to the til asked the old lady if I could have 3 donner kebabs she replied "no" I said you're kidding right and she said no we can't do them then she put a sign up saying 'fried food only' I said that would have been handy 15 mins ago save me queing.. no apology or anything just a moody face, I then changed my order to chips and couple of fritters and paided asked for a receipt she said I'll give you that at end.... then waited another 15 mins or so for the order, in the meantime 2 other customers came and got served before me ?! I eventually run out of patience and said when is my order ready and she talked me like I've never been talked to before as a customer - she was damn right rude saying I'm busy and I don't like your attitude, she offered a refund and I said yeah and my food aswell but she meant here's your money now go.... shocking!! I said why should me and kids go hungry so she served them up (order slightly wrong too) I said can I have a bag and surely you won't be charging me 10p as stated for it, but she did try and charge me for that too!! I said give me my chips and reicept I'll carry then, I then realised after I got out it wasn't even a card reicept! Came away from the village fuming, will never go back and urge others to stay clear - I hope they go under!! Disgusting place plus the chips were awful just to add insult to injury!!

Got a takeaway from here last night, walked in to be ignored while the guy frying finished his obviously highly important conversation. Ordered small fish and chips, plus small chips and cheese. Waited a good 20 mins to get the food but at least it was fresh. Wasn’t till I got back to the campsite that I realised I had been charged £4.50 for small chips and cheese! I am northern so used to Manchester prices where chips are £1.20 and cheese 50p, expected it to be more but not £4.50!! A quid of that was cheese - could have had a whole block of cheese for that!! Robbing gits and it wasn’t even very nice! Staff definitely need personality transplants so they have one!! It’s obvious they don’t like tourists but you live in a tourist place, work in a tourist resort and work in a cafe where tourists are bound to visit. May I suggest a new job?

We've been in 3 times this visit and have never been disappointed. The food is great and the staff are very friendly. I think we'll manage one more visit before we leave.

I don’t think fish and chips should be that expensive so just had cup of tea which has to be one of the worst brews I have ever had very weak even with t-bag left in didn’t improve it, won’t be going back…

Very enjoyable pricey fish and chips here. Our visit was spoiled by a couple of members of staff behind the counters carrying on very loudly. They also had a loud discussion about the Monosodium Glutimate flavour enhancer that they used there. Not the sort of thing a diner wants to hear about

Meva was busy, tourists everywhere, and Thursday is the one day of the week when many of the eating establishments take their day off. Passing the Central Café at lunchtime, we spotted some vacant tables inside and decided to take our chance - and we weren't disappointed. From the outside, it could be mistaken for simply a chippy (and there is, indeed, a takeaway counter offering the ubiquitous fish & chips) but that was our fancy so we waited at the entrance to be invited in. We were a bit surprised to see that a wide variety of food was on offer, specials included a number of meat dishes plus crab salads and sandwiches, fish pie etc. A very charming and efficient young lady showed us to a table and quickly took our order. The battered cod was first class and accompanied by a small mountain of excellent chips. Tea, in a proper pot, for J and a glass of local ale for me - yes, it is licenced and offers some competitively-priced wines as well as local beers and cider. The mushy peas were a bit odd but that didn't matter, we had come to Mevagissey for fish and chips and we were highly satisfied with what we got here. It ain't luxurious but the staff are great and it does offer good quality fish 'n' chips plus lots of other stuff. Recommended.

Ordering a jacket potato at lunchtime, which was priced at 7.95...on arrival. Indeed it was as described, a jacket potato, on a sideplate, no garnish just the potato and filling. This was obviously overpriced for what it was..i appreciate after the lock down that income...

Went in as two family groups sat at two tables served quick food spot on for what we expected. Was impressed how well staff handled the group that came in after us that were rude and didn’t want to wait to be served.

As we quickly discovered (see my other reviews) getting a table anywhere in Mevagissey, even in early October, was a challenge.Luckily, we always planned to have fish and chips on our second night, and due to a badly timed patch of cold drizzle, we decided to eat in, rather than use get a takeaway to sit and eat from the paper on the harbour wall as planned.The tables were socially distanced, though (as everything is at the moment) it was a little strange to be sat opposite my wife who was two table widths away but funny rather than annoying.The service was friendly and polite and the waitress joked with us about the weather. There was a slight wait for the food as it's cooked to order but not too long, and unlike many chippys this one served alcohol, so we enjoyed a beer and a wine whilst we waited.The fish and chips was good though nothing remarkable (we're a little spoilt by the plethora of excellent chip shops in our home area). Main thing was, the fish (I had cod) was fresh (white, juicy flesh and a subtle smell of the ocean rather than smelling of fish).Great way to get out of the inclement weather for fish and chips.

We go to Central Cafe for take away fish and chips whenever we visit Mevagissey. We ask for haddock at every chippy so that our fish is freshly cooked. Service was prompt, the batter just right, the chips freshly cooked as well. Polite and friendly service. (The cafe was socially distanced and every place taken).

Visited yesterday, left standing by door way for a good 5 minutes while staff walked past and didn't acknowledge us (the staff were not busy as there were not that many people in the cafe), a lady came out to ask us how many there were of us, at the time there were 3 with another 4 to come. I'm sure everyone knows by now that you can't seat over 6 people at a table, so expected 2 tables, but received a lecture on that, plus told quite rudely that as of tomorrow you will need to wear a mask even walking in a restaurant. Then lectured again by another lady about not having more than 6 at a table. By the time we sat at the table we all felt as though we weren't welcome, so decided to leave and take our business elsewhere. If you wish to keep customers i suggest you greet with a smiley welcoming face.

This visit was just perfect and i have never felt so safe in a place. From going in where we had our temperature taken and hands gelled, then escorted to a table. Every safety issue has been addressed, the staff all wearing face coverings and everyone stuck to the rules of safe distancing. The food was excellent and well worth the money. Would certainly recommend anyone visiting Mevagissey to pay a visit. You wont be disappointed.

Popped in here today for delicious fish and chips lunch. They were very thorough, took our temperature on way in, very socially distanced, good cleaning regime when tables were vacated and very friendly and cheerful staff working in difficult circumstances. Well done, we felt very safe and comfortable eating there.

Nice ok3d fashioned cafe. Friendly service and a lovely piece of fish with a good size portion of chips. Dog friendly which is alway a bonus for us. Would definitely go again if i was down that way

The service in this cafe was friendly helpful and quick, the portions were large and cook to a turn, the fish was lovely and plenty of chips, and a nice pot of tea, with a reasonable price.

Rather tired interior,poor service tasteless coffee and milkshake.Took 15 to 20 minutes for 1 coffee, 1 milkshake and a coffee that should have been a tea. Also I asked for a white coffee and when it eventually arrived it already had milk in! This could be a goldmine if run properly and not with a "can't be bothered" attitude!

We only went in here as the Fisherman's Chippy was busy,very busy and now we know why!! The girl taking the order was gormless to say the least, I ordered the chicken burger (see picture) I paid 7.30 for this burger, no chips no salad, why didn't you complain I hear you ask, I went back to the counter and was completely ignored, I left the establishment in disgust!On a better note the older of the two girls was very friendly and competent,

Having missed breakfast and being quite peckish, my partner and I decided to pop into The Central Cafe for a quick lunch. Having looked at the menu we decided to order two panini’s and two cokes. I opted for the tuna melt, which turned out to be a complete waste of time. The ‘panini’s’ were actually just part-baked baguettes, with what can only be described as a teaspoon of dry tuna in it and melted cheese. (My other half’s was not much better, but he’s less of a moaner than I am). The side salad was truly ridiculous, and the drinks which came in at £1.85 each clearly came out of a larger bottle and were completely flat. All in all, a huge waste of £15+ and an afternoon spent gazing longingly through the windows of other cafes staring at their far superior food offerings.

I was raining hard when we stopped off for a bite to eat and a warm drink.We found the staff to be polite and friendly and very helpfulThe food was cooked to order, and was very delicious and hot. I had the all day breakfast which was a good plate full of food, and the bacon was nice and thick and cooked to perfection. My wife had a baked potato which she really enjoyed saying it was one of the best she had eaten for a long time.Well worth a visit what ever the weather.

Just wanted a light lunch and as we never been before we thought we'd give it a try. Plenty of tables available for lunch time. 4 orders of sandwiches and drinks soon arrived and were tasty and filling. Good value for money,average of £6.50 a head,and the whole cafe was clean and tidy,tables quickly cleaned down.

We used this takeaway/cafe twice. The first time we used the takeaway fish and chips which were nice although the gravy was not the best. The second time we sat in the cafe. Some had fish and chips which, again, were nice enough. However my husband had the liver and mash which was ok but at just under £9 was tiny and the mash was not good. I had chilli and rice which again at just under £9 was tiny and tasted and smelt awful!! It was quite obviously cheap tinned chilli which more resembled and smelt like dog food. The only thing that gave it away as chilli was the kidney beans!!! I ate the small amount of rice but left the chilli and was not even asked if everything was ok when the staff cleared the table so they are obviously used to it. At £62 for 6 meals (1 of them a childs meall) and drinks and then the price of the pasties me and my husband had because we were still hungry I wish we had gone to the Fountain Inn where food is exceptional!!!

We came here for fish & chips as I'd been told they have a gluten free menu but sadly this wasn't true. Hubby had fish & chips and I was served a very dry gammon & salad.

Ordered 4 meals & was of vey poor quality. Considering its a fish & chip cafe, these came out as scraps. The fish was just ok, but the gammon meal looked just like a thick slice of bacon, not a proper gammon steak.The liver & mash was just available on its own , no veg , so we didnt order this! In all, very poor quality meal

Very disappointed with this place. I wish I’d read the reviews before having lunch here. The writing above the counter reads something along the lines of “listed as one of the best 20 chip shops in England by The Times” well I don’t know along ago that was written but there’s no way on gods green earth that that was written about the current operators of this cafe/chip shop. The chips were horrible old re fried shrivelled up things fried from god knows when!, the previous days chips at the very least. We ordered the “Large Cod” which was a medium sized haddock and cost £10, the fish was very mediocre, the batter was decent and crispy. With he amount of passing custom this time of year you would think they would keep the chips freshly frying. It wouldn’t be totally fair for me to comment on the other meals I haven’t personally eaten however the all day breakfasts on the adjacent table looked absolutely disgusting.

We called here for fish and chips and the chips were just horrendous! They were dry and tasted disgusting. I’m sure they were old chips refried or something. The fish wasn’t too bad I supposed but the chips just ruined the whole meal and made us feel sick.

Nice and airy on a reasonably hot day. Some staff were very good others not quite so friendly especially as we were last to leave the lunch session, a couple begrudgingly stayed until an older Lady took over who was very pleasant.

We called in for a 3 cream teas, Sunday afternoon and were really disappointed, the scones were rock hard and dry, tasted terrible in fact I think it was the worst cream tea I have ever had the misfortune of eating or attempting to eat. £15 wasted. My advise is eat elsewhere.

We have had the best Fish & Chips today in this cafe they really were superb not at all greasy like some pity the mushy peas they serve are minted it doesn’t state this on the menu & I hate mint they offered alternatives such as baked beans which I declined so was given a refund for the peas the service was friendly we had a 20 minute wait as it was busy also it’s cooked to order & they told us there would be a 15-20 minute wait when we ordered there was quite a wide selection of fish on the menu we choose Cod an excellent choice the menu is quite varied this cafe is licensed so nice to have a glass of wine & my husband had a beer both were lovely we would definitely recommend this cafe and would return

Very quirky café situated very close to the Habour! As you step inside, it is as if you are in a different world as the walls are covered with pictures, framed letters, handwritten notes and memorabilia of the Royal Family - Queen Victoria, Albert, Queen Elizabeth and even Diana etc. You could spend ages just looking round and reading the notes etc. The owners were very friendly and served us promptly with smiles. We had very tasty Fish and Chips and Lasagne and the prices they charged were very reasonable and portions very generous. I can just imagine how packed this Café would be during the summer months! Worth visiting if you are in the area!

Best fish and chips I have had since moving to St Austell six months ago. Surprised by the bad reviews as when we went here the food was really good. Fish was freshly cooked and very tasty and the chips were cooked really well too.

We couldn't believe what was served up. Our order comprised of a breakfast with cold beans, cold toast, cold sausage, disgusting hash brown, overcooked bacon all served on a broken plate. My partner had omelette which was ok but the chips looked a week old which is surprising as the cafe is part of the chip shop. The coffee looked and tasted like frothy dishwasher. We certainly won't be returning to this cafe.

Had lunch, very generous portions. Beautifully cooked. Service good and friendly. Very good value for money. Would return.

We had all day breakfasts and were allowed to replace items we did not like with alternatives. The service was quite quick and we were generally satisfied

The fish was beautiful - freshly cooked and hot - sadly the chips were not the best - they looked like they were warmed up from lunchtime - the Fanta was not in an individual can/bottle but taken from a larger bottle - and was slightly flat and tasted cheap. The staff were friendly. It was slightly over priced for what we had - 2 fish & chips, 2 teas, 2 soft drinks, 1 mushy peas = £27.

If you like traditional British battered fish and chips then you should enjoy this. We certainly did and we make sure we have some whenever we visit - either eat in or takeaway.

If you like to test your knowledge of the royal family, this could be just your place. The walls are covered with illustrations of past royals. Service was quick and efficient but I would have liked a little sprinkle of chocolate on the cappuccino.

Quality of fish is disgusting and the batter is greasy and oily. It is a labour to eat hete and has no real atmosphere. No table service either. Will never be back.

Was hoping this was going to be great, and with 2 Diabetic children, was hoping it was going to be here on time?? If we decide to order again, think I will have to get a delivery time for earlier, then it does not mess up with there injections??

We visited the central cafe last year and had takeout chips. They were pretty good so this year, we decided to go back and this time, ate in as it was raining.

i asked for extra pepperoni i didnt get any extra on it and the cheese on the pizza tasted weird.

Yet again above and beyond service. And the food was top quality

ordered food at 14.30 on a pre order! food delivery time should have been 17.55 finally turned up at 1845 with no apologies from the driver, he just laughed when I said your a bit late! also some items of food were missing! meal deal 1 any 2x 11” pizza 2x chips coleslaw and a bottle of Pepsi only got the 2 pizzas!!!!!!!!

Specifically order a deep pan pizza which costs more and the pizza is less than a cm thick,under cooked and delivery was 25 minutes late and the driver didn't apologize at all. The food was cold and truly abysmal not what it used to be and won't be ordering from here ever again

First visit in August, food was fantastic, good service, pay at the counter and sit down food will be brought over to the table. Best chips I've ever tasted in Cornwall. Toilet facility upstairs by the front door. Would visit again if I was in Mevagissey

Ordered and paid for food online and on my confirmation email said everything was paid for and there was no others charges. Only when the driver delivered the food he was demanding a £5 delivery charge but no where was this stated

Your typical fish & Chip shop with a good seating area. Extensive menu covering far more then traditional Fish 'n Chips.

The vegetable Korma was more like soup with a handful of frozen veg thrown in and very spicy. I had been asked by the delivery driver to submit feedback here but wanted to give the opportunity to feedback directly as this is not how the curry usually is so I called and asked of they had a different chef on as it was not to usual standard. I was met by the comment 'we're not really interested in what you have to say'. Once I politely asked if that's how he dealt with customers there was a little bit of swearing and he admitted he thought I was someone else and it wasn't his fault! No apology. I then asked to speak to someone else and the phone was put down. Customer service? Shocking.

The worst meal we have had for a long time.. the chips were disgusting and the fish not good left a terrible after taste .. the chips tasted like they were cooked in old grease.. the women who served us looked like she couldn't be bothered. Don't bother go somewhere else...

We ordered two small fish and chips,mushy peas, one tea and a coke at a cost of £17. The "fish" comprised just scraps of offcut skin, very poor quality and smothered in batter. Complaining to the waitress produced no reaction so we just left, never to return. There are alternative food outlets closer to the harbour which appear to offer better quality and value. That was the worst fish and chips we have ever had!!
