The food is great, especially the Haggis Parcels, and the steak is really tender. The sauces are a bit on the salty side, but if you don’t use too much, it’s fine. However, the atmosphere is quite noisy. People are talking loudly, and you can easily hear every word from tables two rows away without even trying. It’s not the best spot for a quiet, relaxing meal.

We visited here for an early reservation to book the Christmas menu. The service and friendly welcome we appreciated however the Christmas menu wasn’t as good as we hoped. We thoroughly enjoyed the starters and dessert but the Christmas dinner wasn’t the same quality. Overcooked and not too well presented. We enjoyed the wine we selected and the atmosphere we would visit again but try something else on the menu.

We had the tasting menu with accompanying wine and it was lovely however the beetroot tart was a bit boring and tasteless. The issue is with the service. This isn’t aimed at our waitress because she was lovely and was working really hard. It’s the lack or organisation that’s the issue. I had to ask for cutlery twice, we had a few of our courses bought over and then had to wait to eat it until our accompanying wine came over. A couple next to us had similar issues. The management just need to organise things better and it’ll be 5 stars all the way.

We have dined in this restaurant a few times now and generally have enjoyed the experience and felt well looked after. On this occasion however the whole meal felt rushed even though we arrived fifteen minutes prior to our allotted time. Alarm bells rang when the server suggested that the taster menu would take too long as we had to be away by 8pm. Starters arrived promptly and was very enjoyable, but then we were left to our own devices for 30 minutes , no further drinks being served even though an order had been placed. Eventually the mains arrived but we had to ask for a sauce twice which delayed my wife enjoying her meal. The food as cooked was excellent. To end the meal we asked for two Irish coffees one was okay but the other was not. The server asked us to accept the faulty one on the basis of giving us another single malt as well. Having had enough to drink the malt was declined and I agreed to take the coffee however my wife pointed out that she had watched them being prepared and the staff member on the job had difficulty with it and put his fingers into the drink only to be rebuked by a colleague. On the basis of that information I declined to drink it and asked for the coffee to be removed from the bill. This was done however the whole episode did nothing to promote an enjoyable evening, the meal not being cheap added insult to injury which is a shame since we have had satisfying experiences there previously.Hopefully this is a one off!

Had the taster menu , I can't effuse enough about the service , wine and food . One of the best dining experiences I've ever had and I've had a good few. Each course was a taste sensation and the accompanying wine perfectly matched the course . At one point I realized I must have only ever used 25 per cent of my taste buds as the flood of taste and texture made me feel like quite the amateur but after made me feel like an epicure . The owner of this restaurant can't take criticism and instead resorts to calling their patrons fake. I don't see the need to spend my time or mental energy reliving a poor experience to write a review for a place I didn't like. But because of a thin skinned owner, who probably shouldn't be in the restaurant business bc they don't have a constitution to handle any kind of negative review has insulted my integrity. I do not tolerate bullies and will always stand-up for myself. Apparently the owner doesn't understand how reviewing works bc you don't have to create a review immediately. Also just bc reviewed 8 places today doesn't mean they were all restaurants. They all deserved the 1 or 2 rating and the owners rude reply is evidence of why the restaurant earned the low rating. Now even if they were all restaurants why are you trying to shame me for the volume of food I eat, I like going to restaurants and eating food, this especially coming from a restaurant that claims they are accepting of all patron's food requirements. Due to your response I'm updating my review appropriately to the star rating you deserve. The food was nothing special, it was presented with some thought but that also was dependant on the dish, some where put together ok, others looked like it was just tossed into the bowl. Given the price being asked, I'm expecting a bit more effort. The service was friendly but at best it was haphazard, at worst careless. The atmosphere, well I'll let my audience be the judge. I found myself in a semi basement that you tried your best to make it look nice but that doesn't mean that the "view" isn't a back alley and some emergency fire stairs. They are also on top of a rowdy bar where you can hear all the drunken ruckus, such great ambiance!😝

The space is nice and comfortable, and the staff is kind, though not particularly knowledgeable. The vegan option they highlighted on the menu was initially served with non-vegan cheese and possibly non-vegan bread. When we brought this to their attention, they remade the salad but simply removed the non-vegan ingredients without adding any replacements—it ended up being just a tomato and arugula salad. Despite the reduced ingredients, we were still charged the same price. Unfortunately, there were no other vegan options on the menu. Overall, not a great choice for vegans and very expensive considering the ingredients and portions.

Service was mediocre, for example, the menus took so long to come that I had to go the service counter to ask, a knife fell onto the floor and the server picked it up and placed it back on our table (thanks, but do you think we wanted to use it after it fell on the floor?), desserts were asked for at least 3 times, but they never arrived, however they were on the bill when it came time to pay. Food was average; haggis was like a deep fried samosa, salmon mousse was so-so, and the venison was tough. It's a very casual place, and overall I can't recommend this restaurant.

We were a group of 10 people who ate here to celebrate completing our bachelor's degree. We went here to get a taste of Scotland before we all travel abroad, and the cellar room really delivered what we wanted. Dishes such as haggis and Port belly were served in an innovative way. All the flavors harmonize in a way that almost made me a little emotional. The starter I chose was the Haggis Parcel, it was absolutely delicious, a different way of preparing haggis to what I have had before. For the main course I had the Ayrshire Pork Belly, an outstanding dish. The meat was seasoned well and it had some kind of apple sauce on the side which made all the flavors fall into place. And the mashed potatoes were absolutely fantastic. This is probably the best dish I have ever been served from a restaurant. The atmosphere and atmosphere in the restaurant was outstanding and our waiter was fantastic. She made us feel taken care of and provided us with what we needed. The venue was lovely and gave a warm and cosy, homely atmosphere. The portions were quite large, so you got good and full, while you wished you could eat forever because it tasted so good. I wouldn't recommend the Ribeye steak unless you love steak, but that's because there wasn't anything really special about it, because it's something you can get in most other places, while the other dishes were really something for themselves. This restaurant is definitely a hidden gem that must be visited during your trip to Edinburgh if you want to experience some culture.

The tasting menu is overpriced. It looked good, but nothing was memorable. It could be due to the quality of ingredients or preparations stored in the fridge. To me, it felt like someone had thrown things together without individually prepping them and making sure they work together. The Venison was dry and served with a disastrous cottage pie in a tartlet. The salmon mousse was fridge cold and the tattie scone stale, but the pickle on top was fantastic. Everything was small (which is fine since it's a tasting menu), except for the dessert that felt like half a litre of lemon double cream (delicious but way too much). The atmosphere is chaotic, it's a mix between a cozy Scottish restaurant and a dilapidated cafe. Tables are sticky and wobbly, paint peeling off in places. It is not well-maintained and gives off fancy vibes, but it isn't. Lovely service and delicious haggis starter. However, this is not enough to make me want to come back. After years of having wanted to eat there, I literally forgot about it immediately after leaving.

My wife and I struggled to remember exactly when we had last visited this wonderful restaurant as we don’t often travel from the south east of England, but this was as an amazing experience. They offered a hugely tempting six-course taster menu (which included a full vegetarian/vegan option) but we opted for haggis roll and vegetarian haggis to start; venison and sea trout main courses; and we both elected to have the cheeseboard to finish. The food was simply delicious and beautifully presented, and the staff were warm and attentive, without ever making us feel rushed. I would wholly recommend booking a table for a special dining experience.

I went to The Cellar Door on 09/12/2023 at 16:45, as our friend had booked a table for a Christmas meal. We arrived around 10 minutes early and could locate nobody on the first floor, however we did see a sign saying the restaurant was downstairs and to make our way there which we proceeded to do. We found nobody downstairs and then proceeded to go back upstairs, one thing we did note were the steel stairs were extremely slippy it was almost like an ice rink.. When coming back upstairs we were met by some staff who informed us that the steps had just been mopped and then proceeded to take us back downstairs, unfortunately on the way down I lost my footing on the steps due to how slippy they were and proceeded to fall on my back and shoulder down the last 5 steps. Whilst I was able to get back up, no effort was made to rectify the situation with the steps until I complained to a member of staff and advised them they should have dried them at which point a member of staff did this. Nobody checked on me afterwards, and whilst the meal was great and the service once we sat at the table was good the entire experience was spoiled by this accident which could have been avoided had considerable care been taken by the staff to dry the steel steps after they had been mopped. Unfortunately this also led me to miss my theatre trip as I've had to go to A&E!

Last time I was in Edinburgh, I ended up eating in the Cellar Door by chance. I remembered it as a nice location with friendly staff and good food. This time we booked it in advance and it was better than I remember. The only issue was that an earlier table had arrived very late and so our table wasn't ready. I can't blame the restaurant for that and the staff handled it very well. I had a smoked salmon mousse starter, a venison main and sticky toffee pudding. The starter was good, but not exceptional. The venison was probably the best venison I have had anywhere and the pudding was close to perfect. To drink we had a bottle of Amarone, which was really good. I don't remember anything specific about the service, but I have a general impression of the staff being very helpful and everything appearing very inefficient. I really can't find anything to fault and I would happily recommend the cellar door to anyone.

Considering the price and tastes it was below expectations. Staff was friendly and atmosphere inviting but meal took too long between courses for underwhelming deliveries.

Loud dining room with loud noice of bottles from the bar. We ate the Scottish tasting menu with meat. The food was decent until the Tomato slad before the main course. That tomato salad had not much flavor with a simle sour cream sauce. The main course had no taste, salt and pepper needed to be added. None of the wine and drink pairings fit with the foods, but there were some that could have been switched up and would had fit better. Last comment (but first shock) … we were seated next to people’s feet… see picture…

The Cellar Door was a magnificent experience. From the friendly service, to the atmosphere, and the incredible food, I can not recommend this restaurant enough. My partner and I did the six course menu with wine pairings, he got the vegetarian menu and I got the regular menu (so we could share and try as much as we could).l (also, we forgot to take a picture of one course). It’s hard to pick a favorite dish because each one was delicious. I’ve had plenty of great dining experiences but this one easily ranks as one of the best (not just in Scotland—anywhere). I cannot recommend the Cellar Door enough. Make sure you check this spot out!

My father and I walked past this place looking for somewhere to grab dinner at 8:00 on a Friday night with no reservation, an almost impossible task. Having found the original place we had our sights on rammed, we decided to give this place a try, in the end a much better outcome. Having turned up, we were given the literal last table available. Despite the business, the food was still great, venison haunch followed by sticky toffee pudding was well cooked and tasty. A lovely find.

Booked here for a pre-Tattoo show. Already did our homework before visit so knew we wanted the tasting menu with wine experience. We were really looking forward to the dishes. Initial Reception by staff was good. Friendly. We had been placed right in front of the bar and we were in the sweet spot for staff to see immediately the moment we had put our cutlery down and the slates would be immediately whipped away from under us. We were receiving next courses and wine before we had finished the last course wine. There was no break and it began to feel uncomfortable and we were also in the rat run for staff thundering past with other diners food. We asked to be moved. Which was better. The food was hugely disappointing. Looked ok, but just didn’t deliver on taste. The potato purée under the haggis parcel was cold…it could have well meant to be, but it was awful. The hot and cold smoked salmon mousse seemed nothing like a mousse and was very watery. The tomato dish was made to sound way more than it actually was. The biggest disappointment had to be the venison. Again looked great and may well have been if it had been at least warm. When we told the waitress we were told it was supposed to be like that…….the lemon posset was, well, lemon posset! Wines were ok although the dessert wine was undrinkable and was left. We just walked away feeling ripped off for £159. We did tell the staff during and after but they seemed completely non plussed. We had much much better for a lot less the following night, so would not recommend this establishment.

We saw this place when walking to another restaurant that turned out to be full. We doubled back and got the last table for two, and we’re delighted that we did. This is an intimate, atmospheric modern Scottish restaurant with a hard-working team serving well-known dishes with a Scottish twist. We both had the venison haunch, which was delicious, followed by one sticky toffee pudding and a lemon posset - both lovely. Serendipity is a wonderful thing.

Kinda cool ambiance but the food and service didn’t make up for it. Got the meat Taste of Scotland Prix Fixe menu. The stand-out was the crisp haggis (really well done with a combination of texture and rich flavors). The steak was bland, the heirloom tomatoes were acceptable. The service was the main detractor. Other tables came in after us but got their last courses before we had gotten our mains (and we had been waiting on the Heirloom tomatoes, which shouldn’t have taken a long time to cut…)

The decor is paired back with both the interior and exterior sporting a hunter green, setting a cosy and welcoming atmosphere. As soon as you walk in, you’re greeted with the cocktail bar at the front, perfect for a quick drink or a relaxed chat. Down a few steps towards the rear, you’ll find a dining area with some comfortable booths that are ideal for more intimate meals. You can however, eat anywhere in the bar. Service is laid back, friendly and very relaxed serving up casual vibes that make you feel like you have been coming here for years and this really is your ‘local’. Their cocktail menu is a true homage to Peruvian flavours, showcasing ingredients like Pisco, purple corn juice (Chicha Morada), Olmeca tequila, and the iconic Inca Kola. We couldn't resist trying the 'Pisco Pop' (£8.90)—a delightful blend featuring Peru's beloved soft drink, Inca Kola. It’s incredibly easy to drink and has quickly become a crowd favourite! Some bar snacks to nibble on included these gorgeous big juicy green Olives (£3) and some toasted corn known as Maiz Chulpe! (very addictive). Their menu is thoughtfully curated, presenting a well-balanced selection of small plates, large plates, and desserts. Each section offers a delightful array of flavours to suit every palate. The small plates menu features enticing dishes like Crispy Monkfish cheeks (£8) and Salt-baked parsnip with pear, Strathdon blue, and hazelnuts (£6). We decided to try the Coronation Fried Cauliflower (£5)—a generous serving of crispy cauliflower infused with a hint of spices and topped with a creamy, flavourful sauce. The large plates carry on this delightful trend, each dish thoughtfully prepared to showcase the best of hearty, simple ingredients. There are only three large plate dishes Hokkaido Squash (£13), Bacon Chop (£15) and The Bonnington Cheesesteak and chips (£15) We went for the Bacon Chop and the Cheesesteak. The Bacon Chop with cabbage and mash is a comforting culinary experience that wraps each bite in a warm, satisfying embrace. The bacon chop is irresistibly succulent, perfectly cooked to retain all its juicy goodness. The smoky cabbage adds a delicious depth, complementing the rich flavours of the dish. And then there's the mash—creamy and smooth, it just makes this entire meal extra! When it comes to indulgence, their cheesesteak sandwich sets the bar high. Imagine two substantial slices of perfectly toasted bread, generously filled with tender steak and melted cheese. It's the ultimate comfort food that promises to satisfy your cravings every single time. For Desserts we chose the Chocolate Fondant with creme fraiche (£7) and the Meyer Lemon crème brûlée and shortbread (£5) Their desserts are the perfect indulgence after a carb-heavy feast, perfectly sized to leave you satisfied yet craving more. Though petite, the flavours are anything but small—each dessert is a masterclass in culinary execution. When the beautifully crafted desserts arrived at our table, it was clear they were made with precision and passion. The sheer delight on my face as I cut into the chocolate fondant was rare; the rich, molten centre oozing out offered unparalleled foodie satisfaction. It was an entire experience in a single bite. Meanwhile, the crème brûlée was a little masterpiece of texture and taste. A gentle tap of the spoon broke through the perfectly caramelised top, revealing the creamiest, smoothest vanilla custard underneath. Each spoonful was a luxurious blend of crunchy and velvety, leaving me in a state of dessert bliss. The food and drink, much like the decor, embrace a minimalist yet sophisticated charm. There are no elaborate frills or quirky presentations here. Instead, it's all about celebrating the pure, unadulterated flavours. The Bonnington is quickly becoming a beloved neighbourhood favourite. Locals and visitors will be drawn to its unpretentious yet high-standard offerings, making it a go-to spot for anyone seeking a truly satisfying dining experience.

Great place for a pitstop on a busy day of sightseeing. Can recommend the gin and whiskey flights. I had a Sweet Tooth gin flight which was just over £20, beautifully presented with 3 fruity gins, paired tonics and gorgeous garnishes. A really lovely treat, can totally recommend

TOTAL RIP OFF! The price of a morning roll at this place is £3.20 and that's just the roll mind, no filling included!. With one filling (in my case some dried out lorne sausage) it costs £6. Lived in Edinburgh all my life and never experienced this level of cheeky price for a Scottish staple which you can get for <£1 in any corner shop. Cafes nearby don't charge like that. Standard practice is ~£3ish for a roll + 1 filling (e.g. bacon/lorne sausage), then additional fillings are charged at extra. This place is beyond cheeky - not worth wasting your money on! The menu reads like it is £3.20 for a morning roll and filling but oh no, only when you get to the counter to pay you find out it's £6... sneaky and cheeky!
