The Bonnington in Edinburgh, City of

Went to watch the rugby with friends and have food. Staff were very attentive and helpful. As a vegan the menu was good with plenty of choice . Will be back for sure . Our waiter was rob and he couldn’t have been more helpful

I was pretty baffled at the experience I had here this week- I understand that this is a pub environment however, frankly, it's quite a nice pub, and I had been looking forward to coming here for food and some drinks. After a general bad attitude from one member of staff in particular, he decided to come over and rudely say 'there are coasters at the table you can use you know' whilst snatching our menus away. For context, at this moment, I scanned the room and not a single other person in there had a coaster under their drink. One of us had a corner of our glass on one of the menus without realising which, while I understand is irritating for the owners of said menu, I do not believe justifies rudeness to customers. I have worked in customer service and hospitality my whole life and have seen a lot worse be done to such items but still, I would never consider being outright rude. After we asked him if 'he would mind throwing a couple over', he again, rudely turned around and said 'what did your last slave die of?' before walking away. We left immediately and decided not to eat anything. Now, I really do have a personal belief that if you're going to take out your disdain towards life on the general public, customer service isn't really the career for you. It's very concerning when staff clearly get enjoyment out of being rude to people and putting a sour taste on their day. I will make sure to tell everyone I know to avoid this long haired, ponytailed, dark-haired, glasses-wearing man at all costs if they so happen to stumble into this establishment.

Website says kitchen open until 8.30. We arrived to have a drink and some food on a Thursday night at 7.10 to be told the kitchen has just closed. We’ve eaten here many times in the past but we won’t be back.

The food was mixed - steak pie was lovely but the roasts were disappointing.

Very disappointed. Went in for lunch, only to be told it was a "minimal menu" - only Christmas lunch menu, light bites (nachos etc) and the "special burgers". Special they were not. Two chicken burgers with mayo and chips. The chicken was as tough as old boots - so much so we didn't eat much of it. The french fry chips were hit and miss - some cold, some warm. And all for the pleasure of £28 for two. Won't be back

Lovely Sunday roast and decent cocktails - a few espresso martinis. Staff were friendly and place was clean with a good atmosphere. Overall very fairly priced. I'll be back for sure.

Was told I had to leave as I didn’t have ID (I am 32 and was trying to order a lemonade but it is what it is) In the three seconds after turning to enjoy the compliment/absurdity of the situation with my friends another barman SCREAMED at me “it’s the law!” and continued to be really emotional and shout at us. I never raised my voice or displayed anything other than bemusement at the situation but the barman was unhinged and escalated out of no where. I as the customer had to be the one to try to deescalate the situation and calm him down! Really volatile and aggressive way to treat (what he believe to be) a young woman.

I've not been in for a while since they changed owners. Possibly the best service I've ever experienced. Small problem and a delay with our food, which wasn't a big issue as we came in for a couple of drinks. Manager refused to let us pay for the food at all. The food was good and large portions and the cocktails nice as well.

I worked at the bonnington for several week. The general manager (mike) was running the kitchen at that time. I went through the fridges and found moldy product which i refused to use but it had appear as though it was off for weeks and he had been using it. His cheese sauce for the Mac & cheese was green. Absolutely disgusting.

So this was classed as our local as we always have supported local businesses and this included the Bonnington. We always had a good relationship with management and staff over the past few years. So we went in a few weeks ago with our Neice and her 2 children. We booked a table downstairs, away from the bar and near the disabled/baby changing toilet as our 3 year old great nephew was potty training. During the course of the next few hours the kids were in the toilet a few times and was always supervised by one of the adults, no problem. One going to pay our bill we were told several complaints were made about leaving the toilet door open, seriously!!! We spoke to the so called manager (she definitely needs a course in people skills) who then told us it was a few complaints. We asked why no one had spoken to us over the course of the evening to make us aware of this, no explanation given. She then backed away with her hands up, no need for this and told us ‘it was 2 against 1’ why would someone say this and she had customers waiting, I asked what we were….. We left the pub and after going over everything we were really annoyed no one had even raised this as an issue. Following day I received a text telling me that they felt uncomfortable serving me!!! Text was not signed and I wanted to know how they got my number??? No response from text or my email to management company. I found the whole experience unprofessional and lacking in customer service and by the way this bar is now run I am sure it will not last very long as if you don’t have locals spending in your pub then what do you have moving forward. Would not go near this pub folks if you have any sort of opinion that is not the Managers opinion

Faultless service , fantastic staff and good was delicious , will definitely return with my partner soon , nice atmosphere, TVs was showing the rugby such as nice relaxed environment loved it , dog friendly too added bonus :) will come back and order the Sunday dinner next time :)

Nice wee pub, very friendly staff and patrons, can generally get yourself a seat which is always nice.

I live super close and decided to check the pub out after walking past it many times. The atmosphere is lovely and cosy, it’s honestly such a lovely little place to sit. The food is fairly nice, have had a couple of things from the menu. Only criticism is I feel it’s slightly overpriced for the area, almost £18 for a frozen fish and chips and £3 for a pint of soda and lime for the non drinker I feel is a bit steep. If the prices were marginally lower I would be in a lot more. Great staff and weekly events are good :)

Under New Management. Had a tidy up recently. Excellent dog friendly pub in Leith. Food was DELICIOUS & staff were very friendly and efficient. Not just ordinary pub grub. We had the Sunday roast (beef) with roast potatoes and yorkshire puddings with real gravy. My wife had the veg option with battered cauliflower. Very high standard of food with daily specials. Reasonably priced with water for the dog. There was live Jazz on Sunday afternoon which was a pleasant surprise.

Bardzo przyjemny lokal. Jedzenie pyszne i świeże. Baaardzo dobre chrupiące frytki, smakowały wszystkim. Smaczna ryba oraz panierowane halloumi jako wegetariańska wersja fish and chips. Bardzo sycące i duże porcje. Nie mieliśmy miejsca na deser. 😉 Dobre piwo. Obiad dla 4 osób z napojami i piwem kosztował £72. Bardzo miła kelnerka. Polecam! Na pewno tam wrócimy.

2 for 1 wings (Wednesdays) were well made. Veggie option is cauliflower, also well made (despite being cauliflower).

Just a great bar with delicious grub and huge portions. Had the wings and fries and the Mac and cheese. So often let down by these choices but genuinely fantastic delicious stuff with tasty salad and garlic bread too and surprisingly good fries. Top marks

This place has been recently taken over so when I heard they do Sunday roast I was in. Very hard to come by in Edinburgh. Have to say on the whole it was very tasty however the broccoli was so hard it had almost jumped from the garden to the table and missed the steamer completely. The Yorkshire puddings were tasty enough but we're having an identity crisis as you can see from the pics look more like baby pancakes. Not a huge dessert choice but ok. The cocktails were delicious and could not fault the service. Was also finished off with live jazz in the background. Would definitely return.

Don't get the wings. They used to do some amazing Korean wings and buffalo wings. Change of ownership and the wings are now so tiny, really dry and more expensive. My friend got them last week as well and they were the same.

Brilliant Cosy Pub 🍻 The place has been kept quite neat and tidy by the management and the service was amazing ! It's a very nice low profile cosy pub, although it does misses the sports for me personally, but a fine decent place to catch up with friends for a nice beer 👍🏼

Very restricted menu but food was good and service and staff were really good

The pub was taken over in mid/late-2022 and is worse for it. The staff are fine and so are the drinks, but the food has gone from excellent to very poor. Cheap, processed, and bland. The general pub atmosphere is also more sterile. Clearly run for profit margins now rather than enjoyment. Used to go regularly but won't again. A real shame.

Cosy vibes, clean and well decorated. Friendly staff who put up with a large group of us for Christmas lunch. Cheesecake was amazing!

One of the few good things to come out of the pandemic era for me was the rediscovery of this fantastic food pub. It opens for breakfast on the weekend, and always early enough for brunch. Pancakes, big veggie breakfasts or traditional grub. It's all good. Tip; the area downstairs is better for dining, perfect for 1 to 4 people but later groups should book. I'm trying to work my way through the menu but keep on getting distracted by the specials. Make sure you find out if they have any specials before ordering. Portions are good and the quality is top notch. I'm constantly impressed at how swiftly The Bonnington Leith gets good food out of the kitchen. It's absolutely an watery I'd consider if I was feeling time pressure. The pho and the burgers are my top recommendations, so far. It's also worth calling out the staff for being great. After all, they're one of the reasons the service is so slick. They're friendly and knowledgeable. I'd not be shy about asking them for help, thoughts or opinions. Furthermore, I've seen how well the team here makes sure COVID rules are followed. It makes me feel safe. Masks are worn and people sign in. Tip; not on the menu but worth knowing ise that there's often a stash of Gingerbeard Baking goodies to sample. Tables and toilets are clean. Doggos welcome. I've avoided busy times and the atmosphere has always been great. [May 2022 update - still great] [July 2022 update - great, more popular] [October 2022 update - new owners, new paint job and menu. It's a smaller food selection than before, I miss the outside fun paint but my first impressions are good! ]

Only had one real ale, but it was from Wye Vally, not something you see a lot of in Edinburgh. And it was good quality. Downside was they served it in a jug, I don't know why anyone thinks real ale drinkers prefer jugs, I certainly don't.

Popped in after a business trip. Fantastic and friendly service with a good pint. Had a snack of the truffle and parmesan chips, brill. Will be back.

We were in for Brunch today and we received a lovely welcome and excellent service ❤️ I had the Eggs Benny with Bacon & my friend had The Notorious BLT - both really yummy! I had a Bloody Mary which was spot on and our coffees were delicious 😊 We had a small chat with the friendly owner and it really is such a welcoming amd cosy place to be, with great food, drinks & atmosphere. Only downside was on my part - I stupidly forgot to leave a tip, too busy talking 🤣 I did call after to see if I could do this over the phone, but as I'll be back again, it will be added in then 🙏 Thanks so much guys for such a great brunch experience - you nailed the service, food & drinks 💯 I'll be back, tip in hand! Staying with friends close by, popped in for a bite to eat on a quiet Monday evening. Lovely “Fish n Chips” Noted a poster for a “session” I love live music and the night was one of THE best I’ve been to in a while. Great pud and made me feel very welcome. Cheers 🍻

Our son booked a table at this DOG FRIENDLY pub in Leith. Food was DELICIOUS , much better than pub grub with daily specials. Staff were very friendly and efficient. Spoiled our dog with treats & a bowl of water. Definitely be back to try the venison with haggis.

Really tasty food, well priced, lovely relaxed setting/atmosphere, and the staff were great. The manager even took time to have a chat with us after our meal and tell us about their approach to running the place which was really nice. Will be back :)

Stopped in for lunch with our dog and we were welcomed in. Started with a bowl of water and treats for our dog. Staff were very attentive. Food was delicious, especially the Parmesan fries. Had a chicken burger and Mac n cheese. A great experience overall, highly recommend. We will be back.

Started following Bonnington on Instagram after seeing so many people tag themselves having a great meal! We went along tonight with the kids and they definitely live up to there reputation. What a fantastic meal, my wife and I shared some delicious plates, along with the kids enjoying there’s too ( always a bonus when they eat what they’ve ordered) if you’re unsure what to go for, as like us you like the sound of the whole menu the staff are very welcoming on giving advice on all the options. we’ll be back for sure! If you haven’t been…go! Thoroughly enjoyed that today!

A welcoming and cozey bar on the corner of Bonnington Road and Pilrig Street. I like to visit this pub with freinds and always enjoy the experience, if you are in the area its worth dropping by for food and drink.

First time visitor. Nice pub. Clean friendly atmosphere. Staff attentive. Had two courses from a decent menu and was delicious and well presented. I would recommend a visit.

Fantastic pub with a great welcoming atmosphere, the staff are fantastic. We had a few drinks and ordered a few cocktails which were brilliant and reasonably priced. We haven’t tried the food but will definitely be back soon for a meal. Highly recommend.

My other half and I walked past this pub on the way to our accommodation and the decor drew us in. We booked a table for a late Sunday meal and the atmosphere was still going strong. The staff were really friendly and knowledgeable and the food was excellent. Would highly recommend.

We visited on a Friday night & the pub was full. We did have to wait a little while for our drinks but Joel spotted this & came over to explain it was a new food & cocktail menu that night so things were taking a bit longer. He apologised & got us some drinks. I’d had a stressful day so this was really appreciated. Great atmosphere, food was good & the menu was quirky. We really enjoyed our visit & would definitely go back . Joel’s customer service was exceptional & really made our night.

Really very good in every way - chilled local pub, the beer is well kept and a good selection, food hits the spot, cocktails are interesting and tasty, staff are super friendly, helpful and obviously care about what they are doing. They even lent us change for our stall at the flea market. I don’t leave reviews but this place is great.

Visited Bonnington Leith last night (1st Oct). Such a lovely atmosphere. Food was delicious. I had the duck and the others had fish and chips and burger. Service was excellent too. I will defo be back. X
