I found this delightful pub by accident whilst looking for somewhere to eat. They happened to be doing an all you can eat curry buffet. It was delicious and good for money. The staff were lovely too.

Visiting friends on the Isle of Whyte and they took me to Caulkheads. There is an area for the kids to play while their elders enjoy themselves, a big area out back with tables and nice shrubbery. Everyone was friendly and I had an enjoyable time

A warm welcome from the owner and all the staff, and delicious food. In addition to the carvery there was a varied menu. I was very happy with my choice of the chilli, it was delicious. Good for families with younger kids but they were accommodating of my request to sit away from the play area. Highly recommended and we'll definitely be back.

I came here today with my girlfriend, along with 6 kids (not all mine, phew!!). We had a warm greeting as soon as we arrived from a young blonde waitress and was seated straight away on an 8 seater table, which was perfect. The kids made a beeline for the play areas inside and out. We gathered the food order from the kids and ordered our food from the bar. The barman with green hair was fantastic. He was friendly, knowledgeable and prompt. The food arrived pretty quick and all at once, which was perfect... Unfortunately that is where the good news kinda ends. All seemed OK at first, but that was until 2 of the kids (who had burger from the kids meal) tried their burger. They really didn't like it. Apon me trying their burger I found it incredibly dry and burnt. Not just overcooked burnt, it was also cooked on something that hasn't been cleaned and left blackened debris all over the burgers. My kids didn't want the burgers replaced for like or try anything else from the menu. I had ordered "The Spicy One" pizza, which consisted of IOW sausage and "signature" chilli con carne. I have never tried chilli con carne on pizza before, but this one wasn't for me. I don't know if it is just personal taste but the "signature" chilli had the texture, taste and consistency of tinned stuff you can get in the shops and too runny for a pizza. The sausage I found was over processed with no flavour. Sorry, not for me. The chicken nuggets, fish and chips, and scampi were all OK, but nothing grand. When the young looking waitress came to clear away the plates, I did mention about the burgers. She gave me a funny look and said: "Why didn't you tell me earlier when I asked?" In a not so nice tone. I explained that when she came and asked earlier, the kids hadn't tried the burgers at that point. She just said "oh" and quietly cleared the table without another word, not an apology, nor an attempt to see what she can do. The kids ice-cream was good enough and all the children liked that. It comes with a pot of marshmallows, pot of chocolate sauce and a pot of sprinkles which was nice. My girlfriend had the lotus biscuit sundae, which was delicious. Apon leaving, the young blonde waitress who seated us and who I mentioned the burgers to, looked up briefly then looked back down without a goodbye or even smile, which is a puzzling reaction to a customer who just mentions about a food quality issue on part of the order. More training is needed there. Luckily, a very pleasant waitress with glasses gave us a very nice and friendly goodbye as we left. I'm giving a 3 star as all but one of the staff were professional, friendly and a credit to your team. Both the indoor and outdoor play areas keep the kids entertained and the food came promptly. Unfortunately, quality control needs to be more rigorous on some food items and staff training is needed for one particular member. Overall, after spending £150 we feel it wasn't worth that money.

Wanted dinner on Sunday, but a lot of places close early in Sandown. Found Caulkheads on Google as reviews were good & gave them a call to ask if there was availability & there was, so table booked for 6pm, but carvery finishes at 6pm we were advised. No problem, we were on holiday & it didn't matter to us. Lovely staff for finding us availability at short notice. Food is really nice & there is a varied choice on the menu as well as the option of a smaller portion or a normal portion on most things you order. Order is taken at the bar along with your drinks order. Plenty of things to entertain the kids & there is a ball play area as well as an outside seating area. In all we came here three times during our stay & never disappointed with anything at all. Lively place & popular with locals as well as tourists, can highly recommend.

Lovely girl brought out food. She did loot a little sad but on questioning her later she was fine but like me, cannot smile and concentrate at the same time. She and everyone else were extremely busy and I know how hard/difficult that job is. A couple of us had Lasagne which was edible but not what it said on the menu, ie. no layers of pasta except the one under the grilled cheese on top. Also quite tasteless sauce with little or no tomatoes or seasoning. Others also had Macaroni cheese and again only found cheese grilled on top little or no cheese in the sauce. In all disappointing. I think the kitchen could do with a recipe book.

The caulkheads has very much changed since our last visit. We loved this pub when we had our holiday in last august, however our opinion has very much changed! Me and my wife had heard from our friends that the caulkheads had been under new ownership and we expected good things however This was not the case. In the slightest. We were greeted by a young blonde girl who seemed very unprofessional. she spoke to us like we were her age and was not polite either, she took us to our table and explained how it was bar service and when we went up to order our food she looked like she did not know how to use the till. Our food came out within 15 minutes which made it seem as if it had been Microwaved. The food was practically inedible, and was not served how it was stated on the menu. When the girl came over to check on how our food was we explained that it was not how we wanted and she then went on to tell us there was nothing she could do and didn't even apologize. we continued to eat the food as we didn't want to waste our money!! Once we finished we then waited 10 minutes for our plates to be cleared and noticed how the blonde girl was stood over at the pool table talking to her friends rather than taking our plates, very unprofessional behavior and extremely inappropriate as we overheard her using foul language. The only member of staff we recognized was the tall lad behind the bar with the colorful hair, he was a pleasure to talk to and it seems sad to have not seen any of the staff we remembered on our visit.

We came here as we were not sure where to eat. We live here and picked this pub. We were not disappointed. The food service and beer were great. Thank you for a lovely lunch. We sat in the pub garden with the radio on low which was nice. Pleasant of seating with shade. Very clean. Shame the next door neighbours were having their tree cut down so it was a bit noisy at times but out of the pub’s control. It soon stopped and peace resumed. I’m so glad we went thank you we will be back There is an indoor play bit for kids. And a massive kids play area out side.

I had been here 2 years ago with my family and the food was OK. This time the quality of the food did not match their prices. The classic pizza , was stated as having mozzarella cheese on it but seemed more like some sort of cheddar which made it very oily to eat and turned my stomach. The lasagna usually has a bechemal sauce. I did not see evidence of that except more oily cheese on top. The curry was bland and too creamy and for the price at least expected a nann rather than a pompadom. Overall the food very disappointing and I wouldn't eat there again but the staff were very welcoming and lovely and I would go there to have drinks.

Well where to start the staff and management are definitely in the wrong job can barely clean a table properly never mind run an establishment. Rude and argumentative on the fact he and his staff had messed up not only the food orders but glasses were dirty covered in lipstick and clearly not cleaned properly. Kids meals came out cold, risotto was soggy, chewy and was lukewarm at best. 1 meal came out wrong and no servers were around to speak to as they were too busy talking in the back with each other. Then there’s the pizza that was forgotten about, told would be a couple of minutes when in reality it hadn’t even been started as they had forgotten about it. Manager Dan was aggressive and had to be pointed out he had not even apologised and instead argued the fact the food was not cold and reluctant to refund the meals. You’d be better going to McDonald’s drive through at least you would get fed not having to leave to then go buy dinner from a supermarket. Family meal definitely ruined. Cheers Dan, kids are crying.

We've gone a couple of times (with the dog) for the Sunday Carvery. The place is very busy, but the staff are extremely helpful and you don't have to wait long. The food is good: perhaps the roast potatoes are cooked more crispily than at the sister carvery at The Bugle in Brading, but everything is very tasty and lunch is very satisfying. The place is nicely atmospheric. I rember it from my youth 50 years ago when, under an earlier name, it was a bit of a dive. Not the case these days.

Since changing hands.. it's not the same.. the food prices are expensive for what you get and the food is substandard for a pub eatery.. For example. I had a £16 Gammon steak and the steak was thin and lacking in flavour.. my brother had a Macaroni Cheese he said the food was bland and mainly tasted of white sauce and no cheese flavour.. we then paid for a supposed "triple chocolate brownie" which where the pubs speciality. And then waited over 20mins for pudding when the pub wasn't busy.. it was about a quarter full. When brownies arrived they where very small and the side dish (custard, cream ect) was double the quantity of the brownie.. and my brownie didn't taste of chocolate.. in fact it tasted burnt. (I was expecting a soft moorish chocolate brownie) and I got a small burnt square of disappointment. I wouldn't recommend the pub for food now.

We’ve used The caulkheads for years and have always enjoyed our meals and functions using it for lots of different occasions, the managers Reece and Lizzee couldn’t have ever done enough to make sure every experience was enjoyable. Sadly since they’ve been taken over lots of things have gone down hill a bit, the roasts in particular. Before the carvery the roasts were fresh and always home made - disappointing to see things like the Yorkshire puddings are now frozen as opposed to the old massive freshly made ones. The staff are still as friendly and accommodating as ever and work really hard to make sure that everything works as smooth as possible despite the carvery being crowded and the queue in everyone’s way. Fingers crossed all Lizzee and Reece’s hard work isn’t undone under new ownership.

We went for my mum's birthday on Saturday night. The people who work there are very friendly. We was a large group ( 8 adults and a 1 year old ) and were squished around a table. When I asked if we could put 2 tables together, the young girl said sorry no, not her rule but management. That to me was just crazy but we didn't have much choice and it wasn't the young girl's fault so we got on with it. The food was amazing! All of us said that we have never had a pub meal like it. Whoever the chef is... wow.. big well done to you. Would we return, yes.

Had a lovely Birthday Meal at this great pub followed by delicious pudding. It was good to see the pub buzzing on what we thought would be a quiet tuesday night, it created a lovely atmoshere, will certainly visit again and can recommend.

Having eaten here for many years I was quite disgusted when just wanting something light and ordering chips to get 13 chips for my £3.45.

Food wasn’t great, steak was chewy and we waited nearly an hour. Wasn’t very very busy at time so no excuse really. Outside seating is pretty crap but lots of it. No good for disabled folks to sit on as all hard benches. On the plus it’s good for children as things to keep them entertained.

Looking through the reviews for this place and comparing it to the actual quality of food and service, I would suggest that all the ‘good’ and ‘excellent’ reviews are made by people that don’t understand good quality ingredients, cooked by a well trained and experienced chef/cook, served by engaging, and professional waiting staff. For those that understand good food for a good price I would suggest don’t go near this place. I have put a two star rating because ‘terrible’ seems a little harsh, but ‘poor’ is a good description. (Just to clarify I am not comparing to fine dining establishments, I am comparing to everyday run of the mill pubs… which this place is very sub par)

This is one of the best family friendly pubs/restaurants I’ve come across, including on the mainland. The food has always been lovely and the garden is made for families with plenty for kids to do. The indoor play area is small but perfect for keeping toddlers occupied. With the app the deals are fantastic also, just another reason why this is one of our favourite places to eat.

The place was hectic and noisy and the seats were uncomfortable. The food was ok. Our group of 19 had a few issues with orders being wrong. The meals were not coming out together as promised, Expected them to be staggered but not as 30 minutes apart. Couldn't talk to each other as our tables were spread out too far away from each other and we were told they would be closer. So we were all disappointed. However the staff did apologise for meal orders being wrong and the delay in which we had to wait. Unfortunately it actually ruined our night. But taking into consideration it was August and height of season, we think maybe it wouldn't be as bad any other time.

We stayed on the cottage next door. Pub was very friendly. Lovely friendly staff. Food was good. And was sensibly priced. Only thing that amazed us was it shut so early. We were all out by about 9. Which was a shame as we were putting quite a bit behind the bar. Hopefully it gets busy enough again to stay open till the end again.

Played dartys in this really friendly little pub in Ryde. Everyone was really friendly, you can tell the management know how to run a pub and they are very popular. We will be back for drinks and darts again real soon.
