Rainbow Fish Bar in Isle of Wight

We were staying in the area and looking for island fish and chips! Rainbows was in the local village, ideal located on the corner there is no immediate parking but can park nearby Fresh fish and chips reasonably priced, great curry sauce Only opened limited hours but not sure if that’s due to the time of year we were there Lovely friendly staff

Fast, proficient sevice. Plentiful portions of tasty cod at a decent price. Will definitely return.

The fish was not fresh at all, as it was mushy and not a firm texture like it should be. The batter was extremely thick and very soft and “wet” underneath the outer crispy surface. The chips were quite oily too.

Yesterday had steak and kidney pie and chips. The pastry was soft and the filling sparse. Chips were dry. Awful meal. Plus indifferent staff.

Not well today so my non cooking husband suggested fish and chips from rainbow our very local chippy!!! Been here many times and always good but was exceptional today. Rang at 12.30 for a 13.05 pickup. They were cooking the last bits as he arrived. Very large cod,fishcake,large chips and mushy peas. £16.30!!! We've been to "nice pubs" and paid more than that each and it's been no where near as good,absolute 10/10. Well done to all of you and Thank you so much. X

Orderd jumbo sausage and a medium chips and I got two small sausages one hot and one cold and as for the chips soggy greasy and the smallest portion iv ever seen just made me sick 😫 disgusting and expensive

Fantastic from start to finish - the ordering process is clear and the service from the smiley staff is always fab. The portions are generous and the fish and chips are top drawer. This place is consistently brilliant - thanks!

Having seen recent disappointing reviews, I was slightly hesitant. However, I was pleasantly surprised. The cod was fluffy and the batter crunchy. The chips were fresh and full. Service was a little slow but it’s what you can expect when it’s cooked fresh to order. It looked like they still take preorders over the phone. Would definitely recommend. Curry sauce was tasty too! They deserve more positive reviews if tonight was anything to go by.

Very good food, but you do have to wait as the food is cooked to order, I feel they they could open a hour our two more , as if you get back late from the beach you miss out

It was closed when it said it was open so we had to go to the other chippy which was awful!

We ordered fish and chips, battered sausage and chips and chicken nuggets and chips for 20 people just as the Fish Bar was closing and the team could not have been friendlier or served up better food. Every person in our party thought their meal was delicious. The fish was cooked freshly in front of us and the chips were perfect. We are a pretty fussy group and every was very happy! Big thanks to the Rainbow Fish Bar team for your great service and the best fish and chips!

Excellent take away food. Good value. Helpful if slightly stressed staff (they had just reopened apparently). We took our fish & chips to Totland Bay to eat them.

First night on the island ordered haddock and chips. chips tested old and refried fish was full of bones not pleasant. Didn’t have a nice taste.. worst fish and chips ever.. Don’t waste your money.

Wish I had read the reviews before purchasing one of the worst fish and chips I’ve ever had. Soggy fish. Think it was a frozen battered fish. Soggy chips orange in colour. Manager/owner surely you can see the meal is not right before you wrap it. Would have brought it back but was already on my journey. Won’t be visiting again and certainly wouldn’t recommend this experience.

We ordered over the phone as a treat as we were camping up the road. Ready when we arrived and our fish and chips were absolutely delicious and freshly cooked. Will definitely order again when we return in July. Friendly and helpful on phone as were due to be closed but took the order anyway.

Very strange seeing the precooked chips in buckets behind the counter on the floor and with no lids. Doesn’t seem hygienic in the slightest. Saveloy had been microwaved and had exploded when unwrapped. Clearly microwaved as the meat inside had dried and gone brown when they’re usually pink. I won’t be visiting again.

Very disappointed with my visit, service not very friendly, chips over 50% burn, re-fried, greasy. Door entry/exit system conflicting.

Went to the rainbow first time in ages. Placed order over the phone, there within ten minutes. Order already wrapped up. Bowls of precooked chips on the back shelf. Chips were awful, cod roe greasey and soggy batter, cod dry, think precooked and re cooked like the chips. Batter raw inside next to fish, Luke warm , tasted stale, I love saveloys, but the one I had from there was awful over cooked, microwaved . I do not recommend buying from there, as fish and chips are expensive. Go to Totties in Totland instead. 17:40 and the Rainbow was empty, speaks volumes.

We have recently moved here and my wife bought a medium portion of chips yesterday lunch time and the chips were clearly reheated from the previous day. I would strongly avoid! We will not be returning again.

Absolutely the worst fish and chips we have ever had. 'Large' haddock was nothing of the kind for £8.20 and inedible with undercooked batter. Quarter of chicken dry and tasteless. My hungry teenager usually eats everything but left it. Chips ok but had been hanging around for a while so not fresh. Ended up cooking sausages at home as had to throw most of it out. Avoid.

Just moved to Freshwater and first Friday went for fish and chips. Fish and batter dried up and chips poor, seemed to have been re-heated from lunch, not fresh. Second Friday tried again a little later to hope for freshly cooked but so disappointed as batter was soggy and not at all crisp, more like a doughnut, chips very dried up and bitty, no good fresh food here. I was given the food roughly 20 seconds after paying so clearly not freshly cooked, I would rather wait a while and gave fresh food!

Brilliant, fresh fish, as usual. Good chips too. Friendly and efficient service. Great takeaway

Never seen a worse saveloy in my life

Well ,in there for sav and chips , the women Microwaved it so much it was like a stick of rock , probing it 13 or 14 times during the microwave , chips ok for the seagulls out side , sav went flying up the road , crap

Good old fashioned British Fish 'n Chips. Just turned up on spec and the friendly staff were already dealing with telephone orders - so busy! 10 mins wait for a tip-top Haddock, cod and chips. Was absolutely delicious! Recommended.

Do NOT order the chicken burger. Its a thin bit of chicken in a dry plane bun, no sauce, no lettuce, nothing!! My dog could make a better burger.... Chips were alright to be fair.

Ordered in advance was freshly cooked and ready for me on time. Tasty too

This place really shines if you order in advance - turning up without an order means you could wait up to 45 minutes at peak times. Really good fish and chips though. We will be back again.

Food is expensive, and it's not even anywhere near the best fish I have had before, seeing as it's near the coast, the fish should be better. The chips were nothing to brag about either for the cost it was really not worth it

I ordered cod and chips and I can say that it was the worst I had in a long time . The batter on the fish was soggy and oily and the chips brown, flaccid and oily . Thoroughly dissatisfying and disappointing

Would 100% recommend! The food is always absolutely fabulous and cooked in front of you so you know that it’s fresh. Staff are always lovely and happy to help. I Have been going to rainbows for many years and its never failed to impress! Good quality food and good prices!

I arrived on Isle of Wight Saturday and didn't have any food (as awaiting online shopping order). Decided to order fish and chips for tea. We were not disappointed, we ordered at 5.55pm and picked up our order at 6.30pm. Food was of very good quality and sufficient to satisfy our hunger. The scampi was delicious and so we're the chips, so would definitely recommend this place to anyone visiting the area.

Ordered Cod & Chips twice with 1 mushy peas. We live down the road. The chips were disgusting! They looked brown but we’re raw inside. The mushy peas fell out the pot tasteless and anaemic. I think it’s fair to say I will never order from them again and in the Winter it’s only the locals that keep them in business.

Have to say the customer service was very very good. Coming from a place that I consider the home of fish and chips. Great Yarmouth. It's no longer so great. I've spent many years cooking, fish and chips and so is my partner. Fish and chips from this place is very very good. I was not so keen on the chips however, not overken on blanched chips. Other than that the service was very good. Skinless fish. Which I find is a northern thing. Maybe it's just Norfolk that believe the skin on these days I don't know. Either way if you're going through the village and fancy fish and chips, well recommended.

Been coming here for a few years now when I come and stay for a few weeks. Normally very nice food. But when I ordered 2 cod and chips, the chips were very undercooked and hard, and the cod was stale and dry. Obviously re fried as we had the first order of the evening so probably re heated from lunch time. Not impressed, won’t be back.

Food is lovely cooked to order. We order in the shop but you can order over the phone to save you waiting.

Sensational fish and chips. Friendly service, well priced and delicious food. The chips have a glorious golden colour and there's plenty to choose from. Buy your lunch then drive up to the needles and enjoy with the view!

We made a day trip to the IOW, and decided to have fish & chips on the beach. Given we don't know the area we drove around locally where we were to see if there was something open, and found a different place that had a 4 hygiene rating. A chef friend has always taught me to steer clear, so we drove on and we found Rainbow Fish bar! Woot. The good news was they had a 5 hygiene rating! And, they were open. The bad news is they are apparently very popular, and you need to order in advance or wait. We arrived at 5.30pm and the gentleman at the till said they were taking orders for collection at 6.40pm. Yikes. I explained we weren't feeding an army, and just needed fish & chips so we took a risk and placed our order. He then advised he had availability for our order to be ready in 20 minutes. Great! There was a man next to me (local) who told me he had placed his order at lunchtime. Good to know! We ordered 2x portions of large chips, a large fish (battered), and a sausage. Chips: The portion size is small for £4.20. Two adults will still be hungry if they share it. Also, we asked for salt and vinegar and couldn't taste either. Fish: The fish was nice and the batter was crunchy. The size was good and we thought it was good value for money. Sausage: There isn't much to say about that. The staff were friendly, and we would certainly return and recommend it to others. Nothing there is GF-friendly, and I forgot to take photos. Also, we are not a family with teens, but that was the only family option Trip Advisor would give me which is irritating!

Lovely fish, could have done with an option of medium fish as small was very small and large was quite big! Food served lovely and hot and chips were great!

Honestly guys what in the beef jerky is this? Looks like it's been strung up for 120 days to mature! I'm pretty shocked that you served it. It was too late to take it back by the time I had driven to the needles. In all fairness the chips were half decent. But just look at that burger! Is that acceptable? Come on raise your standards a bit. 🙄

Thought we would pop in for some chips for us and the kids only to find out and be warned (at the time of writing this Dec 2022) that the chippy still has STRICT COVID SYSTEMS IN PLACE like a box screen inside the entrance etc... so its best to order over the phone before visiting. We didn't bother in the end as we didn't have much time and it seemed alot of faffing about ordering and given a time to collect. Though it looked a nice chippy

Absolutely delicious! We're visiting the island like we do most years and this place is the best fish and chip shop we've ever found. We're going to miss it when we leave but will most definitely be visiting again on our next trip to the island. Also lovely owner and very generous portions.

Very bad experience. The medium cod was very small, if it was cod at all. After taking off the uncooked batter, the amount of fish left was about the size of a folded handkerchief. The batter wasn't cooked, the chips were cooked, the portion was huge. Ruined my dinner, which in turn ruined my partner's dinner because of my complaints. Would not recommend to anyone. The saveloy and battered sausage were overcooked, neither tasted as they should have. We know about fish and chips because we live in Hastings and it has some of the best fish and chip shops in Sussex.

We have been here before when on holiday and we wasn't disappointed again!! They were really lovely and so tasty. Just remember that they are not open too long and you may have to order and wait a while so may be better to ring ahead first!! Worth a taste though!!👍🏻👍🏻.

Great fish and chips but opening times too short in peak season. They messed our order up and by the time we went back to sort it they had closed up shop for the evening on a Saturday.

They are still operating as they did during Covid so made my order and told to come back in 20 minutes. Think it's better to phone an order ahead and collect. I asked for a large cod and chips and the portion size would have fed two easily. Very tasty, definitely recommend.

Very friendly and accommodating as we turned up late on a Monday when they were hoping to close up, but happily took our order and cooked some delicious fish and chips for us all!! Many thanks 👍

I always make sure to come here when down in the West Wight and have been coming for years! Lovely large, crispy battered fish - sometimes we have to share - and a large portion chips usually enough for whole family! I always order in advance and never have to wait long. Really love this place. Authentic, friendly and great value!

Went here whilst holidaying on the Isle of Wight, we are always looking for a good fish and chips this one as got to be the worst I’ve eaten, .. or not eaten rather!! after reading the reviews the reviews seemed to be a mixed...

We bought our supper here on the last night of our holiday. Really generous portions and delicious chips! Very friendly staff too. We will definitely come here again next time we're over on the island. Be warned though, it's unsurprisingly very popular so get there in good time or phone ahead to order. We highly recommend this place!

Good potion size and great chips but the queuing and ordering system isn't great. Had to wait 30mins for scampi and chips. They are only open for two hours in the afternoon.

Drove to order in the shop and found you could not enter the shop in the usual fashion, as there are some strong social distancing measures still in place. However, this does not stop you placing an order at the shop although they normally take your order via telephone and agree a time for collection. I placed my order through a safety screen at the door and it was ready in about 10 minutes, as I was told it would at the time of order. The normal chip shop menu items are available including mushy peas, gherkins, pickled eggs, etc. Staff interaction was friendly and the food was excellent. 2 large chips, 2 large cod, 1 pot mushy peas and 2 gherkins came to about £28.

Lots of fish and brilliant chips. Book your slot! We didn't but could wait the 20 minutes to get ours. Great start to the holiday!

Overwhelmingly disappointing... Only had a large portion of chips, which cost a whopping £4.20 😱 the price was a complete shock due to the fact that the website price didn't match the shop,and quite frankly was a massive rip off for the size, myself and my family found the portion to be more of a medium portion, and not only that but after we had eaten the chips we all felt sick... It personally gave myself eggy burps after a short time of eating them, and an uncomfortable belly, my son in the evening ended up laying on the floor in the night and was giving off the impression he was gonna throw up. I woke up the following day with a painful feeling in my gut and unusual toilet habits... I personally won't be using rainbow fish and chips again, and would rather the slightly longer walk to totties fish and chip shop in Totland. It's a shame because rainbow used to be really good but it appears the quality has slipped. As a side note I have often wondered why they choose to have an empty unused restaurant area at the back? Could this not be turned into something more useful like perhaps renting it out to someone else to use as a shop? Then perhaps they could stop ripping people off with their prices as would be paying less rent. However I must say that the staff seemed extremely friendly, polite and happy.

We had fish and chips Friday 10/62022 and they were really nice so as we are on holiday back again for more. We are a little fussy with F&C so we wouldn’t go back unless they were good. Oh and lovely people.

We had lovely meal for 5 of us last night. Food was great, tasty. We didn't mind to wait 45min for the food to be made for us as it was made fresh to order and still very hot once arrived at out camp site. Staff very friendly. Place lovely and clean. I would definitely recommend that you pre book your order.

Found cum in my chicken burger when I specifically asked for no mayonnaise this is an atrocity and I will NOT BE coming back also found a pupic hair in my chips this i absolutely disgusting I would not advise anyone to come here

This is apparently a large portion Of fish and chips. Cost £11.00 per portion and this is as it came out of the wrapping. I sent a message and asked if there was a chip shortage.

Been hear a number of times and has been very good. However, went there on Saturday 16 April 2022 for dinner and fish was dry and bland. Was also very expensive. Not sure if this is under new management but standards seem to have dropped.

Lunch time arrived and my stomach was hungry so gave Rainbow Fish Bar a go and I was not disappointed at all! It was scrumptious. 😋 I ordered scampi and chips and I was not disappointed. The quantity and size of the meal was just right. Everyone was very friendly and helpful and the price was just right. Would I recommend? Hell yes! Picture doesn't give it justice especially as I had eaten half before I remembered to take a picture.

Granted it’s off season and they had literally just opened for the day but service was exceptionally fast from very friendly staff. Got a cone of chips and scampi; very impressed by the fact they seemed to evenly salt the chips and the scampi was cooked to perfection. Reasonably priced too with the portion size being perfect to share between 2 as a light bite whilst out exploring.

Visited in October 2021, got there as it opened and although we hadn’t pre ordered they were able to process an order for cod, chips and a battered sausage. All was good although not spectacular but definitely worth it if you are in the area

The Fish and chips were not that good. Lots of small bits and pieces with the fries.. The haddock was ok..but with fish bones.. We asked with salt and vinegar.. Sadly we didn't notice any of that either..
