Lovely place to have a nice cuppa tea , but tbh leaves a lot to be desired , tables were all dirty , tables cleared but no one had a cloth , spray , in fact no cleaning done at all , food on floors outside and in too , attention to detail needed here in all aspects , we went both days of the weekend as the tea is always nice , one of the cups were stained so we changed it , scone very nice but over cooked and glad I had my teeth in lol The staff are all really pleasant but why do they not clean tables ready for the next guest it’s crazy , toilet tap great and dries hands good but the loo seat is wooden and chipped and tbh honest how much does a loo seat cost ? The price of two teas and a scone ! Winchester has huge amounts of guests each year from all over the world and this is portraying Winchester in a bad way , with better management keeping an eye on cleaning , getting rid of cobwebs which are in mass amounts outside of the building this place could be amazing , you have the venue , the location just 5/10 for the whole service

We never had this excellent facility when I grew up but if we did it would have been superb as locals would expect no different The prices are tourist rates the food is over priced for a cafe sausage roll £7.50 with 2 salad items It is not to bad I suppose for the ambience but this is where it changes tables uncleaned toilets are shocking as all use it customers or not The outside has been forgotten needs a bloody good clean windows full of old spiderweb and water stain gutters full of leaves and floor wants a steam clean Letting my home town Harvester would suit this place and be more professional and beneficial

Long wait for drinks because there's one queue for food and drinks. Prices too high. But biggest criticism is about the ladies toilets . Unfortunately I see the same criticism made by another post in February and nothing has seemingly changed. Filthy floor, loose toilet seat with a bit of the wood damaged on the front part of the seat. Small and dingy. I'm sure some of the money made today in the cafe, as it was very busy, could be used for a refit.

This used to be a favourite of ours for coffee or lunch. Not anymore. Tables are cleared without cleaning. The only gluten free option was one soup with bland untoasted gluten free bread. Salad on the side was unbelievably small portions yet charged per item. The loos - one of two was Out of Order. The other had a revolting floor & wooden style seat on loo that looked worse for the wear after waiting in the queue. There was no bin nor bench on the handbasin area - I needed to put in some eye drops but found I could not under the circumstances. Won’t be back sadly - will go elsewhere in Winchester now.

This was two Sundays before Christmas and the Cathedral Christmas Market was in full swing twenty yards away. Chaos. As previously mentioned, people continually jumping the queue to get to the drinks counter. The layout is illogical - the till is half way along the counter instead of at the end, poor girl on the drinks counter was constantly having to explain that she couldn't make anything because people had bypassed the queue and the till. Tables full of dirty crockery with again, one overworked girl trying to clear. To cap it all, our milk jug had a hole in the base and continually leaked over the table. Only one ladies toilet open - the other was out of order, and people just coming in to use it, and not buying anything. No light in the gent's WC cubicle - I had to use my phone torch to see. Never again.

Why do you have to change things for the worse?. For years we have been coming to the refectory whenever we are in Winchester. There has always been the choice of two delicious sausage rolls and salad, usually a tasty mixed salad of tomato, beetroot and a couple of other dishes. Today we found there was only one type of roll with coleslaw, leaves and tortilla chips. Two many leaves are a bit boring and there is enough stodge with the pastry so tortilla chips are unnecessary and I don't like them anyway. Bring back some different salads please. We had the soup which was OK but nothing special. A disappointing visit

It was very hot in Winchester when I was there. This place is full air conditioned, clean and spacious. The service in this lovely piece of architecture is friendly. The food is reasonably priced and delicious. It closes at 3.30pm or thereabouts. You can eat outside in the courtyard or in the spacious and beautiful garden. On the doorstep to the cathedral. A perfect place to sup and chat everyday if you want. a thoroughly enjoyable experience .

The counter set up is illogical. If you just want a drink and perhaps a cake you have to wait behind people all ordering meals hence the complaint already on here about queue jumping. So you wait and get to the point you where you put in your drink order. The same person then asks you if you want anything else and asks for payment. However as has happened to me the cakes etc. are ahead of this point and people queuing for their drinks hide that part of the counter and without pushing in you can't see anything. I had to give up as payment is being asked for and it is impossible to see anything you might want. Then you join the queue for your drink. At that point is another till which is never open. Badly organised when the refectory was revamped.

As long standing regulars at the Refectory we very much appreciate the improvements to the interior seating and exterior courtyard which make a pleasant ambience. The food is good and reasonably priced and most of the time there is space available. For drinks we would choose a cold drink or a tea although the management could source and promote better quality tea from e.g. Char or other local supplier instead of mediocre Twinings. The big disappointment now is the quality of the coffee drinks, dishwater is a harsh if honest description of the taste, whatever type is ordered. A flat white that is like a watery, weak latte does not compete with other independent coffee places in the area but the price is the same. Whether it's the machines, the making or the coffee used, we're not sure. There are local quality coffee suppliers available, also please have the choice of whole or skimmed milk and not semi. The coffee drinks really detract from the overall experience in our opinion.

We're regular visitors to Winchester and thought we'd pop in for a change. We normally go to one of the independents, but... The main inside area by the servery was untidy with numerous tables uncleared. No trays at the 'Take trays from here' place. Outside, agai lots of tables uncleared. It was evident where all the trays were! We were deciding on which Panini to have when we were told that they were only serving cakes; hot service had finished (2.30pm). We had a cream tea each (the last of the cream, no strawberry jam) and tea. We found a sunny spot outside and enjoyed our food. The scones are large, fruity and quite nice. This could be really nice here, maybe they're short-staffed hence the embarrassing number of tables not cleared, but it's not a good impression. Sorry, but it's back to the independents for us!

As a local I use the Refectory frequently for meeting with friends over coffee. One of its great advantages is the amount of outside seating either in the garden behind or the courtyard in front. Outside seating is often a premium in other parts of the city. Here you can sit peacefully in beautiful surroundings and with a sensible space between tables. I cannot speak for the lunch menu but the coffee is acceptable and they have some lovely cakes. The best fruit scone in Winchester may also be found here! It is not very well signposted and many visitors probably miss out as a result - it is near to the Cathedral bookshop abd behind a very high wall.

Visited the refrectory in Winchester today, as previous visitors we decided to go for the soup as before the refurbishment it was superb. How wrong we were what greeted us was a pale green mush, it had zero flavour and was supposed to be vegetable leftovers ( would be nice to have known what type) My reason for the negative review is that my wife and I have had indigestion since consuming it. Four of us ordered coffee and bread pudding mid morning. Coffee was fine but the bread pudding was woeful. A couple of raisins in each slice and it tasted as bland as it looked. Quite the most miserable bread pudding I have ever tasted. If you love bread pudding avoid this one. If it is prepared in house, get a new cook otherwise change your supplier.

The Refectory has all the facilities located in one central area to support the Cathedral. It consists of a booking office for all the events held in the Cathedral, a gift shop which is well stocked with both local and national items of religious and historical intrest, male/female/disabled toilets and a cafe. The cafe has ample seating both internally and externally.

We were surprised at how good the food was here and how inexpensive. It is pretty much a self-service cafeteria sort of place, but the food is much better than you would expect in that environment. Very spacious with indoor and outdoor seating. Easy access with a wheelchair or pram.

We had travelled from Worthing for the Christmas Market and needed a lunch break, and Cathedral cafes are renowned for really good food. We both had the cottage pie and roasted vegetables. The vegetables were very different, 2 types of gourds I think, parsnip, artichoke and sprouts - very nice. The cottage pie was delicious. The only draw back was getting a table when we had our hot food. We did manage but had to put the old dirty plates on a seat by us. We later found out that 3 staff had not shown up so let’s let them off. I would definitely go back again all the food looked delicious. The Cathedral gift shop had some wonderful Christmas bits in it. Loving Winchester we will return and get to go in the Cathedral.

A pleasant & surprisingly spacious cafe, tucked away near the cathedral & offering a good selection of hot drinks, cakes, sandwiches & hot meals. As well as the plentiful indoor seating, it also has a pretty outdoor courtyard area with a number of tables & chairs.

It’s quite easy to miss the cafe/restaurant - I was meeting up with my daughter and family and she doesn’t live in Hampshire. She said to me “where exactly IS that, I can’t remember seeing it!!!”

I visited the Refectory on the day of the opening of the Cathedral Flower Festival. It is always a pleasant place to grab a coffee or cup of tea and cake or a a light lunch but on this day the staff deserve a particular accolade. We knew that wherever we went it would be busy and as it was almost 2pm by the time we sat down, that we would have to be content with whatever was left. Quite frankly to sit down and just have a cup of tea was a treat as the Cathedral had been so crowded and busy. The refectory had obviously been the same and it did look a little as if locusts had been through the building.

Last Sunday we called in for a drink and sandwich and had the worst sandwich we have had for years, it was supposed to be Coronation Chicken but it was horrible, cheap sliced basic bread with a few bits of chopped bland chicken, the Coronation bit was a yellow spread on one of the slices of bread, I dont think in recent years I have had such a horrible sandwich, we often visit Winchester but in future will give that restaurant a miss.

Lovely place but the person-volunteer- setting up the salad table was seriously not helpful regarding ingredients information.

We stopped off to take a break from walking round the city. A walled seating area with bistro seats, picnic benches and chunky wooden seats and tables. A bit of suntrap against the wall too. A good selection of drinks and snacks and lunch type meals available mid range prices. We had tea and sat and relaxed. It's large so l would imagine it could get manic at peak times.

We were here for late lunch - there was only a limited choice of food available - three choices of cold sandwich, three choices of hot sandwich and sausage rolls or quiche to have with a salad - though most of the salad choices had gone. My husband loved the sausage role but it seemed a bit dense to me. I had a cheese and onion quiche but it didn't have much cheese in it at all - tasted more of egg than cheese. It's not a cheap place and I think it just needs a few tweaks to make it really good.

We have been here several times and been quite pleased. This time was a complete and total disaster. We were not the only ones who fealt this. My wife had a lasagne. The top was burnt to a cinder and it was luke warm What salad there was loked as if it had been under a heating light. The plate fealt as if it had been in a fridge. I had gammon. It was like a lump of leather, lt was also cold on a stone cold plate. The pineapple was so shrivelled I did not recognise it and the vegetables were so over cooked they were undescribeable. Like so many places now days the staff were not English and were unable to understand us!!!!!!!!!!! This was at 12.00 midday. We definitely will not be going there again.
