We went to the catchpenny on the 21st of July for my wife's 60th birthday altogether there was 20 of us we all had a different variety of meals including Sunday roast fish&chips pie and mash some had starters as well and I have to say we weren't disappointed the food was lovely and the staff bless them couldn't do enough for us all I had taken some banners and balloons in prior to us arriving and they had decorated the part of the room where we were all sat. Thank you for helping to make Julie's big day very pleasant. Clive and Julie Brewins

Came to the catchpenny for a festive bottomless brunch with 4 friends and the food was divine! So much better than any other bottomless brunch I've been to (which were up to twice the price, so superb value for money). There was a great selection of drinks available and the table was yours for 2 hours, so no rush to leave. Staff were friendly and the chef even came to talk us through the food. Will definitely be back.

Lovely meal for my mums birthday this evening in the bar area. Yes the decor is a bit dated and an update would improve the general atmosphere but we couldn’t fault the food and its very reasonable for the portions and quality!

One of my favourite places to go for lunch. The menu is varied and not too large, with something for everyone. The plated carvery is generously portioned, there is medium or large, however as the medium is so big we have never ordered the large! There is a choice of meats, beef, chicken, gammon, and this is a plate that is cooked with love right down to the home-made Yorkshire puddings, roasted root veg, stuffing ball, green veg and beautiful roast potatoes with a thick and rich gravy pot to help yourself to. I love a steak, and the evening restaurant, The Hide, specialises in steak. Such a shame that they have taken the steak off the lunch time menu due to lack of demand, but I asked if I could order steak and the chef was happy to cook one for me. I got a beautiful large sirloin cooked medium rare and gorgeously seasoned served with skin on thick steak chips, home-made enormous onion rings, beefsteak tomatoes, juicy mushrooms, roasted shallot and a portion of dressed green salad. It was absolutely fabulous, compliments to the chef for their exquisite cooking skills for each element of the dish. The bar staff are welcoming and friendly and can’t do enough for you. Can’t wait to go again. Bravo chef and The Catchpenny. Come on treat yourself, let’s get steak back on the lunch time menu, you won’t be disappointed folks.

Arranged to meet a couple of friends for drinks on 23rd September. Not been to this pub before but it looks really nice from the outside. This is where any pleasantries end. Went inside and approximately 8 travellers in being loud and messing about ordering drinks then saying they didn't want them to get them for free. They were dancing around and grabbing women customers as they came to the bar. They had used the toilets and they were left a disgrace. Must be the only establishment that let's them come in. We left as it was spoiling the evening, not just for us but everyone as it becomes an intimidating atmosphere the more they drink. 2 young ladies on the bar left alone to deal with them. The owner should be ashamed for allowing this. They have recently put a poll on Facebook asking for recommendations as to what people want from a local pub. No option for keeping travellers out though. Wouldn't recommend and would certainly not return. It won't be long before it has a reputation as a place to avoid. Would give no stars if I could. Spoilt my and my friends evening.

The food here is average at best. But what ruins the experience more than anything is the decor and the locals. The bench seats are absolutely filthy. Almost as filthy as the mouths of the locals who’s every other word begun with F. Kids play area needs the ground work doing. Left as quickly as possible. Won’t return.

Phoned the pub to ask about availability of the carvery on Sunday. Was told there was room for myself and my 4 friends. Got there about 10 mins later to a table which wasn’t set up. The staff were very interested in setting other tables up though. After a lifetime someone came n put menus on the table then asked about drinks. We ordered. A lifetime later a lady came to the table with a glass of disarrono n coke but did state to us that she didn’t know what was in it,she’d been ordered to bring it to our table. Doesn’t look good not knowing what drink you’re taking to a customer!! Ping-the kitchen bell had been rung and a huge Sunday dinner was put onto the serving hatch with a tureen of veg and a gravy boat. The other drinks were left on the bar while 2 workers wrapped cutlery. After talking amongst ourselves about the lack of drinks, they were brought over to us. After another lifetime,we were asked what we wanted to order. There’s no carvery so we ordered dinners, medium and large ones. The huge Sunday dinner is still on the hatch with the veg and gravy. The workers were wrapping cutlery and still setting tables while walking to and from the kitchen hatch. Sunday dinners still there. We got offered some starters which we hadn’t ordered. Lack of kitchen/worker communication. The dinners still on the kitchen hatch. Other workers are coming in and out of the room we were in. Customers were starting to gather. They were shown to their set tables. Ping-our dinners were on the kitchen hatch. The previous dinner had now been moved (back into the kitchen) after sitting there for 20 minutes. We received our dinners and for one medium dinner and 2 large,we were given one tureen of vegetables and a gravy boat half full of thin gravy. Yeah,we should’ve asked for more but shock and disgust stopped us as we thought we should’ve been offered more!! The food wasn’t too bad but the mash was instant, there wasn’t a great deal of food on my plate and the lack of vegetables was obvious. I phoned and asked about carvery. There wasn’t any carvery. This should be stated when potential customers call. The amount of workers to the amount of work being done was a bit daft. No tables set (should be set straight up after one lot of customers leave) but 2 lasses stood with their backs to their audience, wrapping cutlery in napkins. Doesn’t look good having no set tables and having your back to your audience. All in all,I have had better service in a local greasy spoon. I manage a bar what serves food and this place will be recommended if anyone ever moans about the service we give. They’d come straight back to my pub. I won’t visit here again and definitely wouldn’t recommend it.

Visited with my son. He had fish and chips and the fish was rock hard burnt as were all the chips. Like a cheap freezer fish and chips. And was £12!!! The wait was lengthy and no one else in. Just made a polite complaint and just knocked £6 off. Didn’t even offer to replace or refund his meal even though we all had burnt chips. Deffo avoid.

Having waited patiently one Wednesday afternoon for nearly an hour, we realised something was amiss when the party next to us were served their food despite ordering long after us. An oversight, it seems our grub, one Mixed Grill , one large Roast Beef dinner & one Beef n Guinness Pie, Chips & Mushy Peas, costing nearly £44 had been prepared but not served up. A young girl was sent to our table armed with a little fib 'there's been a mix up with the mixed grill, we are gonna redo it'. Shortly after, a little too soon in fact, the offerings arrived. Mixed grill, wrinkled sausages, hard egg, dried up bacon & chicken. Most certainly not redone. Roast beef, luke warm meat, soggy Yorkshire Puddings, reheated vegetables. Beef & Guinness pie, more supermarket than home made, impenetrable crust like an iron fortress alongside a handful of soggy dark brown chips. Oh dear.mistakes happen , but come on, don't treat your customers with contempt. To simply reheat the food and pretend otherwise does not bode well if repeated custom is desired. A full refund was made.

I recently took my 8 year old boy here as a treat . It went disastrously ......... we arrived at 5pm on a Saturday , the pub was busy, we had to take the worst seating within the pub , situated between the Ladies Toilet and the door to the smoking area , this provided toilet smells and cold smokey air in abundance........ not a suitable place to enjoy your much awaited tea with an 8 yr old ..... we had the cheek to decide to wait until a more suitable seat was available........ eventually a seat was available, we proceeded to the table , when we arrived the land lady was cleaning the table ...she abruptly asked if we were eating with them .......I replied yes and then went to the bar to order , I was told I had to hurry up as her staff had been working all day ........ it’s was 5:45 pm ................... what....? I politely declined ordering as it was clear her staff meant a lot more too her than the actual customer paying for the service they should of being providing. I’m sure I read a sign outside this establishment that stated food was served TIL 6 pm . This is a place to avoid ....... unless your in the click that is . I will not ever use this pub ever again.

If you like sitting in regimented rows of tables similar to a military canteen or an old folks home then this is the place for you. I don’t understand why clients will sit next to a window with dead flies on the sill, with food on the floor and dried on food on the chairs, hygiene is obviously not a priority here. This popular pub is well known for its carvery, but it nothing to write home about just the normal standard of pub food. Having had a power cut during the night which was not fixed until lunch time I do thank this establishment for booking us in at short notice and then accepting a change to the booking time as when the electricity was restored at home we had a problem with our home alarm which took some time to sort, so we were grateful that we were accommodated and I’d not go hungry.

Visited last Friday for lunch, very surprised. Food was very good, plenty of choice and plenty on the plate when it arrived, may I suggest if you have cottage pie ask them to leave the chips off the plate, there is more than enough with just the pie. No desserts that I could see but after a meal that big , who needs one? Staff very pleasant. My only criticism would be parents not supervising their children, steps, hot meals and racing children are not a good combination.

First visit to the Catchpenny but not the last, nice surroundings and very good food. All four of us had different meals and all enjoyed the food very much.

Having been regulars for Sunday lunch for a good while, we decided to give a weekday lunch a go. And we were very glad we did! While excellent value for money, the food is also tasty and well presented. I'm quite predictable and nearly always choose lasagna as my go to choice wherever I go- and I love the Catchpenny lasagna! A good portion served with chips, salad and garlic bread! My companions had steak pie served with lots of fresh vegetables and both said it was delicious. We also had a reasonably priced bottle of decent Aussie Shiraz. The bill came to slightly less than £30 in total - a bargain and certainly less than the nearby whetherspoons for much better food. We'll definitely return.

Ate here a few weeks ago, best to book if you want to go on a Sunday as the food is fantastic. Car park's not very big which is why it's better to go early. Highly recommended if you want lovely home cooked roast dinner.

We go most Sundays, it gets very busy with lots of repeat customers so it's worth booking in advance. Sunday lunch is excellent; it's a carvery with choice of four meats and a great choice of vegetables. All the food is wonderfully cooked and the staff are all very friendly and helpful however busy they get!

Were on our way to nostell priory and needed feeding! Saw this pub quite by chance and called in. The eating area isn't that big but it was full - a good indicator. After ordering a roast chicken dinner which was inexpensive, well cooked and tasty, we were ready to continue - we'd need no more food today!

Visited the Singing Chocker on a Friday night, In spite of being Busy Paula went to trouble of finding us a table that suited us. We ordered food and drink at bar and didn't have to wait too long before meals arrived. We were waited on by Kerry who got everything right ,made sure we had correct cutlery and sauces napkins etc. Food was good and Kerry called back to see if it was to our liking. The place is bright with good staff and Atmosphere. We visit quite often and have booked for Christmas day Thank you Paula and Kerry for good experience See you soon Mike Brown

A very dated place, but a great place if you like listening to the staff bitch about homeless people and how the police don’t do anything about them. “Go get a bloody job, and work like I’ve had to do all my life”. All whilst sitting in the customers dining area! Now don’t get me wrong, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but there is a time and place, and this wasn’t it. Go to jollies or the last bank over the road. Coffee was nice though.

Best caramel latte's in the area, food is very fresh and extremely tasty. My favourite thing about The Vie is the staff and the owner, they are excellent! 😍 Just returned home after the evening bistro, and everything was amazing! The food was delicious, the drinks were excellent but as always the staff were the best part of the experience. 💯 % 🔥 If you haven't been yet, you're missing out! 😁😊👍🍰☕

I am more than happy to sing the praises of this consumately professional Castleford venue. This place is old school and right up my street. I've only just become a regular but for me there is nowhere else when I'm in Castleford. The whole place is put together with love and it must have taken quite some time. It's a real homely 60's throwback and none the worse for that. No wifi and cash only and that is how it should be. Long may it continue. I never had a bad coffee/tea/grub there yet. The staff are perfectly ok. The staff are focused and professional so don't engage them in conversation when they are busy. Easy as that. This cafe has the air of an American diner about it and it's like being on route 66 (yes I have been there). I could easily imagine KC's with a lovely old Wurlitzer juke box in there and I promise when I win the lottery I will buy them one. They provide a good local service with CD/DVD sales for a local charity and deals for the bus crews in the station next door. 10/10 for community values. As the faceless corporates destroy more and more high streets places like KC's are gold dust and should be fully supported. One minor request please. A little more variety in the otherwise superb music. Maybe the Shadows? All the best then from Graham (The cockney in Aussie bush hat). Keep doing what you're doing ladies. Simply the best and happy birthday to schhh...you know who. Best Respects to all.
