This pub is right by the Portsmouth ferry in Gosport, nipped in for a midweek roast, was really nice. Generous portions fresh vegetables cooked just right, didn’t have to wait long. Highly recommend.

We are staying in accommodation on the High Street, near a branch of a national pub chain. We expected to have dinner there but a local told us about the Castle Tavern, just a short walk away, so we went there instead. We are so pleased we did. It is peaceful and comfortable with a good value, extensive menu served by charming friendly staff. Oh, and the portions are enormous! It's a bit tricky to get to because of current (June 2024) roadworks, but it's definitely worth the (slight) effort. We'll be back soon.

This is not a pub ! We walked in for a drink and every table was empty but all were reserved . We were rudely told that if we wanted to sit down for drinks we were only allowed to be there for 15 minutes as the reservations would be arriving. I am disabled and was told to sit one of four stalls at the bar which I am unable to do . Very rude staff Very unwelcoming Will not return.

The food was wonderful.. its such a shame that you can hear the female manager berating & verbally abusing her staff in the kitchen who quite frankly are doing a wonderful job. Would have been a much higher review, had it not been for having to listen to such negative & bullying behaviour from a grown woman towards both bar & kitchen staff whilst trying to enjoy a lunch with friends, doesn't make a very enjoyable atmosphere.

I was waiting for the Gosport Ferry and needed to catch up on some work emails and, as it was a Friday and I'd just had fish & chips, decided to pop into the Castle Tavern to do catch up and have a pint whilst I worked on my laptop. The young lady who served me, Alesha, couldn't have been more helpful, professional and polite. After I'd been served and sat down, I noticed my battery was low, but also that all the plug sockets had been blocked up with plug-in child protectors. I asked if there were any sockets I could use and was informed that it was not permitted for customers to plug in their mobile phones or lap tops. I asked Alesha, bless her, if I could speak to the owner and was informed that she was abroad on holiday. In hindsight, I wish I'd insisted and asked for her number, nevertheless, as I felt the restriction on plug sockets was rather unreasonable, especially given the drink prices seemed to be quite high. So, my message to the Landlady of the Castle Tavern is this: If you are happy for customers to come to your pub and spend their hard earned cash on food and drinks etc., yet begrudge them the use of your plug sockets to charge laptops and phones, don't be surprised if your customers form the perception that you have allowed your avarice to cloud your judgement. Bizarrely, you provide free wifi, but not electricity? It very much appears that you have got your priorities the wrong way round and put your personal gain above the interests of your clientele. I'm afraid, this protrays you in a rather unsavoury light and highlights what appears to be an unfortunate and unpleasnat feature of your character, which I hope you will refllect on and adjust. Your staff are a credit to you - I only hope you will have the dignity and humility to reciprocate and be a credit to them and your customers. Thank you.

We called in for a drink and something to eat after a day out at the submarine museum, we ordered drinks but noticed all tables reserved, we did mention to the lady at the bar who said we could use one of the tables as there was still an hour and half before the booking. We both had a Sunday roast which was delicious, hot, fresh vegetable & plenty of it. Just amazing and glad we walked in.

Arrived at the castle inn which sadly is run by an extremely rude landlady. The pub is extremely full of strange locals that make you feel uncomfortable and with an abrasive person in charge I am baffled how this place gets any business I suppose it’s location to the ferry keeps it going as it’s literally the first pub you see as it certainly isn’t the atmosphere. Plenty of proper pubs on the island with a much welcoming feel

Very disappointed as been here quite a few times and been lovely staff and food. However today we arrived and felt very awkward and unwelcome from the moment we entered we could see they were very over run and stressed. As myself and partner went to the seating area out the front we had moved a table slightly forward into the sun and was approached by a memeber off staff asking us to move it back so we did not a problem! But then the land lady came out as we was very rudely dragging the table so I said politely sorry as they normally are there we didn’t think would be a problem. Her reply as she abruptly dragged the table was no they are but not now as I want them there until I say so. I apologised again and she slammed the table and stormed passed us for a cigarette so not an issue to be had but then when I went for the little girls room herself and all the staff were following me me with daggered eyes so we left our drinks and left straight away! Won’t be retuning as don’t get much free time child free and wouldn’t want this experience again. Felt very unwanted

Cannot sit in a quiet place for a beer as they have ALL tables marked as 'RESERVED'. We turned up at 1700 hrs, and were funnelled to a noisy corner, as every table was marked as reserved from 1800hrs. This is a p that serves food, not a restaurant. We sat where we we 'told' and all the 'reserved' tables were still empty an hour later when we left an hour later. This place, although they serve decent ale, is focussed on controlling their customers' actions to the benefit of the business. There is no reason why we could not have sat away from the noise other than they could not be bothered. Lazy and ignorant.

The owners / Landlords of this pub truly care about their customers , there is a friendly welcome on arrival and the menu is very good with a few specials for good measure , the food in fresh and the veg appears to be fresh and not frozen like you find in some places , there is a roast of the day plus home made puddings , there are good beers , and the red wine is excellent . Myself and friends have been able to relax and enjoy socialising again knowing that Covid 19 procedures are in place and being adhered to. We were disappointed to see people arriving for dinner at tables they had booked to then object and become abusive when politely asked to take a minute to fill in the book, sanitise their hands and walk 10 steps wearing a mask. I enjoyed a family meal on a Saturday lunchtime. Popular pub close to waterside park and ferry terminal. Plenty of tables. Friendly, helpful staff. Food arrived quickly and it was delicious. As per a previous review we had ham, egg and chips. Fresh, hot chips and a tender piece of ham with the egg. Good value and highly recommended. The toilets were spotlessly clean. The ladies toilet cubicle was tiny but better that than no toilet. I look forward to visiting again to try another dish.

Stumbled across this pub today. Food was excellent. Prices and portions were very good. The quality of the ham, egg and chips was amazing - my husband orders this meal where ever he goes and this was definitely one of the best - if not the best! The staff were very welcoming too!

We booked a table for yesterday evening, inviting a couple of friends to join us. This pub was recommended to us so we gave it a try. We were not disappointed, we received a warm welcome, shown to our table. There were 2 menu boards hanging on the wall, one with fish dinners one with meat and veggie dinners plus a menu list on the table. My friend has the home made steak pie which when it arrived I wish I had ordered it in stead of my usual steak. I had a ribeye steak cooked to perfection, both of our wives had the roast pork with apple gravy I thought I had come out of our meals as a looser for plumping for the steak. The food was piping hot and beautifully cooked and presented. For desert we all had home made apple and caramel crumble with lashings of custard. So that was 4 main meals, 4 deserts plus a round of drinks, all for under £80 hows that for value, the staff were brilliant attentive but not over bearing. All in all we had a fantastic evening and will be returning again probably next week. I would thoroughly recommend the Castle Tavern

Called in here for some lunch , good value 2 meals for £14 mom had chilli and rice I had beef pie and chips. Lots of meat, good gravy but pastry was not good, I couldn’t eat it. Mother really enjoyed chilli, said it was one if the best she’d had. Decor and furnishings could do with a bit of attention but well worth a visit

After ringing the Cocked Hat 6 times to book a table for 4 Sunday and no one responding to the telephone, i telephoned the Castle Tavern and was immediately booked for Sunday. This turned out to be one of my better decisions, the meals were plentiful, excellent ,the staff helpful and delivered the meals without much delay considering how busy they were (in itself this speaks volumes) Would highly recommend

Wow, the reviews we saw before visiting were good, but I wasn’t expecting it to be this good. Ordered roast beef with trepidation, as it’s so often a bit tough when eating out. However this was succulent and delicious, obviously slow roasted and extremely generous portions. It literally melted in the mouth. The gravy was exceptional - clearly made from the meat juices - thick and delicious and plenty of it. The veg was properly cooked and not crunchy - absolutely perfect. Four enormous roast potatoes, crispy on the outside and fluffy inside. And as for the Yorkshire pudding - again large and perfect.

I had House pate & toast which came with salad leaves, tomato & cress for a started, nice, as the toast was thick, too much pate for the size. Husband went for the breaded mushrooms, 5/6 & garlic mayo with salad leaves, like my starter. Mains we both went for the sirloin steak, homemade chips, tinned garden peas, garlic friend mushrooms & a grilled tomato. Husband was bit disappointed as he felt the char grill was too much for him & was making the steak taste a bit bitter. I went for a pepper sauce, not as peppery as I would like, but it did calm the char grilled flavour down a bit. No dessert was absolutely stuffed. A few tables reserved & a 50th Birthday celebration also. Friendly staff.

discovered the castle tavern a year or so ago, now I hardly go anywhere else for a roast on a Sunday. Staff are always friendly and the roast are the best.

Had our office Christmas Dinner here and we were not disappointed. Lovely food and lots of it which was cooked just right and complete with plenty of gravy! Puddings (if you had room) came with lashings of cream, custard or ice-cream - or all 3 if you asked. Pre booked and happy with our choice of venue. Staff were friendly, extremely well prepared for our large party of 17 people. Well done to you all.

As ever the Castle was fantastic on Christmas Day, the food was fabulous and very reasonably priced for this day, the best thing about the whole lunch was the staff, they are all so welcoming even if they are working on Christmas Day.

Dropped into the Castle Tavern for lunch with friends. We ordered haddock, chips and peas, ham, egg and chips and cottage pie from the lunchtime specials menu, each priced at £4.95. The haddock was off, so we ordered the scampi. The food arrived promptly and was hot. You don’t get a lot for £4.95 in the U.K. today, but this was passable. This is probably one of the better (if not the best) pubs in Gosport, a town which doesn’t have a lot to offer the visitor.

I have been to this pub a couple of times for a partners Xmas do and always been impressed with the service and home cooked food. Today myself and my partner popped in for lunch after a long walk. Both ordered bacon sarnies. Well, we could not believe they make a profit from what we got. Massive doorstop lovely soft granary bread and 4 slices of superb bacon! Including chips and a generous salad garnish. £4.20!!! Ridiculously good value. Every time we in gosport now this is where we will get lunch. We just wish the prosecco was a reasonable price, 25 quid prices us out.

A nice pub in the traditional seafaring style located near the Gosport Bus Station and Ferry Terminal. Nice to walk around the area and near the High Street. Staff pleasant. Some nice fairly local beers. Pub already taking orders for Christmas. Local characters drink there.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the Bun, that couldn’t be fixed by competition in Lee on Solent. It hasn’t changed in years, the furniture, carpets etc continue to look tatty. The drink and bar staff are all really nice, as you would get in almost any other pub, anywhere - and there’s an open fire place too.

Such a wonderful place on the beach. Dog friendly. Lovely interior and beautiful design. I just wanted to have a hot chocolate on my walk. I went in and I was seated, but long minutes passed by and I had to chase an employee to give me the list of the drinks. I mean, come on! I told when I arrived that I would like to have a drink, why the lady couldn't give me the menu withouth chasing her up, when the place wasn't busy at all and there was enough staff on duty. I wasn't impressed how bored and not customer focused the ladies were there. I wasn't that welcomed and I felt like I could just stand up and leave, noone would notice. I wrote this review to give a honest feedback and a chance to improve. The employees should be way much more proactive and welcoming. I liked sitting inside, loved the place, but not the service. There is a kids corner too with books.
