I had the most amazing roast dinner ever, the food was 100%! The service was spot on, and atmosphere was lovely! If you ever want to go where the food is 100% authenticly cooked from fresh, great staff where you know you will be looked after, and a lovely atmosphere the bun penny is the place to go!

Great choice, excellent food and has an old world charm in the bar area. Terrific grill Monday. Food was excellent and the sides were generous. Shiraz on their new list was amazing...unless you're driving.

Excellent food Best chips ever cooked

Visited here after being given a recommendation for Sunday lunch. Definitely not disappointed. Food arrived piping hot. The chicken was lovely and moist, the roast potatoes were nice and crispy yet fluffy inside, and the accompanying vegetables were great. Will definitely be returning!!

The best pub around food was extra hot which is so important good prices no service charge we always leave a tip but it is nicer if you can leave what you think. We had the chicken and mushroom pie Omelette Steak and sea bass , four deserts and drinks .very good price .

We had lunch with 9 of us including 2 children. Food was all nice although as 4 of us had a roast the veg was in a separate dish and the serving of cauliflower cheese was far too small. But otherwise no complaints and the service was pretty good.

Group of 12. Booked at 3pm for a birthday but were late to sit down as we wanted a few beers in the bar. When we sat down I have never met such miserable staff. No cauliflower cheese at prime time Sunday sitting. The staff were rude, couldn’t give a toss, felt like we were unconvincing them that we were there. Told it would mess up their system that we were 30 mins late to sit down. No one else was there - no wonder why it’s crap. I have never met so many rude staff. Never again. The heninvetweeners character and the Gavin and Stacey lookalike staff were awful. Would never recommend. Woeful.

On attempting to discover a third location to enjoy a regular lunch. We sampled The Bun Penny, arriving a little before noon on a cold Friday in January. We ordered our drinks and requested a waitress to take our food order with the barman who explained the process and where we might sit with our small dog, which was the bar area only! So after more than a 20 minute wait, we abandoned the pub because the promised waitress had not appeared. The pub also suffered because it was cold and the pipped music was just too loud. Thus, a pub with a poor selection of beer’s and no service we left to find somewhere who wanted our custom. However, the menu looked reasonably. Not surprisingly, we are not planning a return visit.

Very disappointed with the Sunday roast. I would suggest you spend your money somewhere else.

What a great place to have a meal. Everything was first class.

Very disappointing visit - wish I had read the reviews before wasting our money. The pub was rowdy, and very very noisy. The staff were not interested. As no one came to our table we went to the bar to place our order, they said it was table service and someone would be over….. no one came so after another 10 minutes we stopped a member of staff and they said they would get someone to us. When the food came it was again disappointing the burgers were very under seasoned and only a few chips, the salmon fish cake was completely tasteless and the mushy peas with the scampi and chips were awful, this would of been bought to the staffs attention but no one asked us how the food was as no staff seemed interested - no engagement from staff at all…. Certainly won’t be going back

Lovely Christmas eve drink for the festivities

4 of us went for an evening meal booked for 7.15. We were seated in the bar area which was really noisy. We asked to move, but nothing else available. Portion size of all main courses was meagre to say the least, although very nice. One more mature member of staff was rude when we asked for more drinks. Asked for coffee around 9.15 to be told the machine had been turned off!! Last orders was rang at 9.50, on a Saturday evening!! Our bill was brought to us, without our request, with the comment 'we are closing at 10pm!!

What a perfect evening. Food was wonderful and plentiful, staff were amazing. Very understanding that we were 6 middle aged women (apart from Kerrie!) having total fun, Thank you so much.

Great food, service too. We had to wait about 20 mins as kitchen opened at 5pm, but that was fine. The food was worth the wait. Just found chairs at tables very uncomfortable.

I first visited here in the summer with my family after a dog walk along the beach. We only used the garden for drinks and after reading the menu said when I’m next back in the area again I’d definitely come back for a meal. I returned yesterday with a friend after a cold dog walk to a cosy warm inviting inside. We both ordered the pork belly with bubble & squeak it was really delicious and the waitress brought over a bowl of water and biscuits for my dog all happy customers! Will definitely return, thank you.

Great beer, fantastic food and a great ambience.

Had a beer mid afternoon, with an ex-Royal Navy veteran who was based at HMS Daedalus nearby and 'the Bun' was his old stomping ground. Excellent staff, prompt service, good selection of beers etc, AND the place was buzzing. So different to other pubs nearby, from my experience. Worth a visit again.

Visited for lunch and drinks. The service was great - my partner is coeliac, and the team were really knowledgeable, and checked the full menu for allergens, described the kitchen and measures they took to avoid cross contamination, and have a separate fryer. Nothing was too much trouble, and she had her first meal of fish and chips in a very long time! Dog friendly, with bowls and biscuits too.

The food was disappointing compared to previous visits. One of our dinners had steak, and it was not of good quality as it had lots of gristle in it, so very disappointing for the price charged. Twice, we mentioned this to staff when asked if everything was OK and nothing was done regarding our complaint. A bit of reduction in the bill or a complimentary drink or coffee would have been sufficient, but to do nothing was not good customer service as you just feel, why bothering asking if everything was OK, to then not acknowledge the problem.

We have been visiting The Bun Penny on a fairly regular basis since lockdown. The food is second to none, it’s my favourite place to eat especially on a Sunday for the roast dinners! I have many different meals on the menu and I can genuinely say I’ve never had a bad meal there! The portion sizes are decent (especially on the roast dinners), the service is great and the atmosphere is friendly. This is my first choice when asked where to eat in the area!

Thanks to the Bun Penny staff for a lovely birthday celebration meal, there’s a good selection of drinks, with my favourite neck oil on tap, the wine with dinner was a quality one too. We had a mixture of starters, pork belly bites and the garlic mushrooms off the specials menu are worth the belly space, delicious. The menu caters for all tastes and portion sizes are perfect, there are a few dishes that you can choose smaller or larger. The fillet steak was great, the birthday girl cleared the plate of the pork belly main, she loved it. The staff were attentive, friendly and made sure we had a relaxed, pleasant evening. It’s worth booking, we’ve been for a Sunday roast and had an equally enjoyable visit.

The smallest portions of food ever !! The lady behind us also complained about her 1 slice of lamb on her Sunday Roast . We ordered 2 mixed grills which were £25 each and the size of meat portions were small . One of our portions of chips had 5 chips !!!5 !! The staff were lovely and very sweet which is why we didn't complain.Everything else was perfect. Just stop over scrimping

Stayed for lunch, the service was satisfactory and the food was excellent. Improved massively from a few years ago. Well done all keep going!

UPDATE SEVEN MONTHS LATER AND THEIR MENU IS STILL SERIOUSLY BEHIND THE TIMES AND DISCRIMINATES AGAINST SEVERAL GROUPS OF PEOPLE. JUST RANG TO SEE IF THEY HAVE ROAST DINNERS FOR VEGANS AND GLUTEN FREE, BUT THEY ARE NOT ANSWERING THE PHONE. YET ANOTHER MAJOR REASON TO PROVIDED A BETTER MENU ONLINE. ALSO IF YOU EANT TO BOOK A TABLE YOU HAVE TO PUT IT IN WRITING 🙄 Only one vegan main and geuss what it's a curry. Only thing someone living a compassionate life can have is a curry or a burger with chilly mayo or no mayo. That's if the mayo is even vegan. Not much for people with allergies either. Both veganism and allergies have existed since the beginning of time.

OK but service not great, food just acceptable and atmosphere somewhat chilly. I don't think I could recommend.

The food here is the best and the most reasonably priced I've had in ages. It's now my go to for good food. I only have 2 requirements when I pay someone else to feed me. I expect it to be as good but preferably better than I would do it. And this place does it way better than I could . Bye bye Harvester, no more chances Old ship, forget you expensive steak places. Bun Penny clearly actually employs a chef .

Food was lovely, presented really well. We all enjoyed our food, we had mains and puddings. An issue for us was one of the waiting staff had black nail varnish. This should not happen when working in a restaurant. Before writing this review I wanted to check online to see if we were correct in our thoughts. The below extract is copied from food hygiene safety. Hand-washing should take about 30 seconds of continuous lathering and should include fingertips, nail beds and forearms. Anyone handling food must keep their fingernails short and clean as long nails collect bits of food and bacteria. You and your staff must not wear nail varnish.

Really nice old pub (former coaching inn). Staff were welcoming and attentive. Food was nicely prepared and cooked. We made use of the BOGOF offer (Mondays). Would highly recommend.

An exceptionally busy evening put staff under pressure but meals were promptly brought to the table by attentive staff. Just a shame the floor manager's brusque attitude spoiled our enjoyment

No garnish on starters. Sausages in honey were floating about in honey just some mini pigs in blankets floating away looked poor Presentation. Main meal was nice but nothing amazing. Not much choice on deserts. Nice place nice staff food is over priced and lacks wow factor

Excellent service, very pleasant and accommodating to our clearly not sleepy grandchild! Food good, just more gravy needed for the pie and green veg could be added to the seasonal veg selection. Carrots, onions and parsnips were the selection given in early July, which whilst tasty, would have benefitted greatly from something like asparagus, green beans or broccoli.

The staff were very friendly and helpful; the difficulty is what to have, the food is amazing, and the choices on the menu are all local produce, very tasty. The service was faultless from the moment we arrived, everyone was helpful and attentive and we were not rushed. There is plenty of parking, and the ambience was fantastic.

Lovely pub in Lee. Love music on the evenings. Little pricey but good atmosphere, nice seats. In the winter they have a lot fire going which is lovely. Good outside garden as well.

An old place but not a period atmosphere.

We popped in here last week for a drink after we had been to the near by Alver Valley and had a drink outside and said we should definitely come back for something to eat. So today we drove here and sat outside the front of the pub and had some food and drinks. The menu has lots of choice and a reasonable price. Me and my partner both had a sandwich. I had the club sandwich and it was probably the freshest sandwich I’ve had in a pub in a long time. The bread was soft and normally I have to pick out the scabby brown lettuce that normally end up in sandwiches but it was so crunchy and fresh I was really surprised. This won’t be our last visit here as the food was very enjoyable. The staff behind the bar were also very friendly and cheery.

Monday November night was 2 meals for £17 I had salmon new potatoes and veg husband had rump steak tomato and mushroom and chips and extra for a peppercorn sauce we both enjoyed our meals only here for a few days but will be back

The Bun Penny is not far from Lee on the Solent seafront. Large pub/restaurant with plenty of seating inside and out. Off road parking available. Gets busy especially in the evenings and summer months, so best to book. Friendly and welcoming staff, decor is bright and airy. Good choice of reasonably priced food. Never had a bad meal here. Definitely worth a visit.

For me, this could be such a great pub. Dogs let it down for me. On a recent visit, as I walked in, one dog was sitting in a chair that, I suppose, was meant for people, another was on an extending lead, that must have been 3 metres from its owner and another was just wandering about the tables with no lead at alI. I don’t agree with having dogs in pubs/restaurants but I know that some places accept them. I did not see any dog code displayed. For me, personally I would like to see posts outside that dogs can be on their lead or, for me, at worst kept under the diner’s table. I get it that dog owners like to take their dogs with them but why can’t the Bun Penny have a specific area that is dog free, maybe they have but it wasn’t pointed out to me when I arrived

This was my first time at the Bun Penney and definitely won’t be our last! We were lucky enough to have some sunshine so we sat in their lovely clean spacious garden. I had a glass of wine and my husband had a pint which he said was really tasty and fresh. We then ordered food, he had the gammon and eggs (great size portion and really tasty) I ordered the crispy beef noodles (these were the main reason for my review) I think I’d go as far as saying this was the BEST PUB FOOD IVE EVER HAD! They could of been served at a great Thai restaurant! Can’t wait to return to order them again. Friendly helpful staff and all round 5* from me

First time at the bun penny, recommend so thought we’d give it a go and what a surprise, both had mixed grill and crème brûlée for pud. The mixed grill was delicious although huge portions everything on the plate was well cooked and had lots of taste, crème brûlée was slightly over done which wasn’t an issue but the raspberry sorbet was to die for very refreshing and cleansed the palate. Would we go back definitely would we recommend definitely
