For me, this could be such a great pub. Dogs let it down for me. On a recent visit, as I walked in, one dog was sitting in a chair that, I suppose, was meant for people, another was on an extending lead, that must have been 3 metres from its owner and another was just wandering about the tables with no lead at alI. I don’t agree with having dogs in pubs/restaurants but I know that some places accept them. I did not see any dog code displayed. For me, personally I would like to see posts outside that dogs can be on their lead or, for me, at worst kept under the diner’s table. I get it that dog owners like to take their dogs with them but why can’t the Bun Penny have a specific area that is dog free, maybe they have but it wasn’t pointed out to me when I arrived. Went there again, and asked, when booking to be seated nowhere near any tables that had dogs allowed. To their credit they did exactly that and it all turned out well. Tim was really helpful. They seem, to me, to have dog and no dog areas mentioned and now it is so much easier for me to be away from any dogs. Based on this experience FIVE STARS. Thank you.

What can I say, one of my favourite places to eat has truly gone downhill. Incompetent bar staff advising people they can't order food as they need a reservation whilst others are happily taking orders for people without reservations. Plenty of tables available for walk ins so no real reason given for why we wouldn't be able to order food for at least 3 hours on a Saturday lunchtime. A real shame as this place has always been a great place to go for food.

We recently visited for a Sunday roast and while the roast itself was good, the kids’ bangers and mash; a blob of mash & 1 grey looking chipolata was especially unsatisfactory for the price—unappealing and lacked any real value. More importantly the service was a letdown; it was slow, unresponsive, and felt like non of the service staff really cared. It’s a shame because the food had potential, but the poor service really ruined the experience. Wouldn’t recommend unless they improve on customer service.

Lovely pub with a good choice menu for food and drink. Inside restaurant seating and a garden area. A large room that can be hired for special occasions or larger groups of people. All the staff are pleasant and helpful. The service is very good but not rushed. Recommend booking a table for food as this is a very popular pub and restaurant. There is plenty of parking on the pub site. Very close to the seafront on Lee-on-the-Solent. Family friendly and dogs are made welcome with the addition of doggy biscuits.

Visited for lunch this week, first time in ages. So glad my friends chose this as the food was very good, we chose from salads and fish. My sea bass was lovely, would have liked more of the mixed greens. One friend had the fish cakes which she said could have been tastier but she still enjoyed them. Salads looked very fresh and filled the bowl they were served in. Service was superb and friendly . Pub was busy, always a good sign. Look forward to going again.

I want to start with the Bun Penny used to be a lovely place to go....which we've been to many many times over the years... We arrived at the Bun Penny at about 2 minutes to 10 on a Saturday night for our Husbands to be frostily being told they were calling time at the bar at 10pm...they ordered 2 pints and a bottle of prosecco for us ladies...we were then told we needed to be out by 10.30...which was OK....the frosty lady behind the bar was making it very obvious she didn't really want us to be having the bottle of prosecco we had ordered! She then started walking round cleaning tables etc and telling everyone how many minutes they had left. She was like a Sargent Major ...I actually saluted her....we were done....granted in a rush by the given 10.30 and left. Now don't misunderstand me ...I know we all like finishing work who doesn't...but it was Saturday night at only 10.30. Was this a pleasant end to our evening....No!....will either couple be returning....No!....which is a shame. Also noticed whilst we were there all the notices stuck on things Do Not Do This...Switch the TV off as soon as the match has finished etc....almost felt like we were at school! So general sum up....if you want frosty service from a Sargent Major and to feel you are lucky to be able to enjoy your drink and just about breathe whilst you are doing so...then the Bun Pennys for you....if not....find somewhere else to enjoy your alcoholic beverage of choice ....sad times...🥲

At our recent meal in the Bun Penny with a group of friends my husband and I got steaks which we weren’t happy with. The waitress very politely offered an immediate replacement, which we were happy to wait for. When the new steaks arrived, mine was fine, but my husband’s was again tough and he could not eat it. So, a bit of a frustrating and embarrassing situation when it came to paying. But in the end, we were compensated very generously. We love the Bun Penny, and we go there regularly and are very happy to continue to do so. A big Thank You to all the great staff of this great pub!

We were made welcome and the restaurant gave the impression of high standards, with nice features, well maintained decor and clean in appearance. Having made a visit on a recommendation, we were anticipating a reasonably enjoyable meal. The starters were enjoyable, the crispy prawns and soup of the day were delicious and served with warm bread and French butter. The pork belly was enjoyable and the presentation was very good. However the beer battered cod was a huge let down. It looked great, with crispy batter, and served with a huge portion of chips, but the fish had a weird heavy dense texture reminiscent of Spanish salted cod (it wasn't)- and was very disappointing. The chocolate brownie and the waffle dessert helped make up the disappointment.

We were visiting The Bun Penny after the lapse of many years. As this place keeps changing management frequently, from past experience, one was not sure what to expect The Bun Penny as a public house was in the distant past, called The Victoria Hotel. In evidence, there is a framed photograph in the pub showing the old building with its signage. It was interesting to note that when they changed its name they focused on the hairdo of the same monarch! We opted for the roast lamb. This was most exquisite, moist, soft and in other words, extremely mouth-wateringly delicious The roast lamb deserves high praise! We sat close to the fireplace and were tickled by the signs a the lintel above the fireplace and also beside it. (Clearly, someone is a punster in the house, blessed with a wicked sense of humour). A couple of these have been photographed and reproduced with this report

We really enjoyed this pub. We were five and a dog and we booked for 6pm as we knew the kitchen closed at 7 on a Sunday. We appreciated being seated in a booth where the dog could not cause a disturbance for others. Beer was well kept (otter and tribute) and the food was nice too. My mother in law said the chicken pie was the best pub meal she had had for years Good gluten free choices were available. It was also nice to see the staff still offering desserts after the kitchen closed. Will absolutely return next time we're down there.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the Bun, that couldn’t be fixed by competition in Lee on Solent. It hasn’t changed in years, the furniture, carpets etc continue to look tatty. My sister visited today. With her high food standards (a.k.a. she's fussy), I needed a pub that served nice food. She chose the Bun Penny, because we've not been there in years, and I'm really glad she did! The service was quick, the staff friendly and professional and the food was really good. My sister and I had different steaks and maybe they were both cooked a smudge under, but that was ok, 'within parameters', if you see what I mean. They tasted very nice; they were thick and juicy. The sides were good too and I asked for something they don't usually do on the menu but they accommodated my request and did it really well too! We were both just as pleased with the more modern take on the 2 traditional desserts we chose. We had lemon meringue and tiramisu (please see photos). The only thing was the place was a little dark (hence the darker light in the photos). Although we were sat the opposite side to the light behind a post, so it was darker anyway, the lights did seem a little dull but that's the only minor negative comment I have to make. Overall, we very much enjoyed our meal at The Bun Penny and we'll be coming back! We did find the food a little pricier than some pubs we've been to around the same area, so probably wouldn't bring the whole family there to eat, except maybe on a special occasion, but for that tiny fraction added on the bill, it was very much worth the money. It's a little 'nicer' there than where you'd typically go for your usual pub grub. I think The Bun Penny has got their demographic right. Thumbs up from me!

The Bun Penny is a good 'local'. The food is ok and service is good. However, in keeping with too many drinking establishments, they are unable to keep bitters/ales. True, they are more demanding than lager beers. Bitters require more flushing of tubing and the discard of the first pint or so each new day. The Bun Penny sometimes serves a decent pint, but it is very hit and miss. Please bar manager, raise your game.

First visit having passed by many times. Stopped for a few drinks and took advantage of the small plates/ nibbles from the menu. A fairly good range of options all at £5.95 or £20 for 4. Service was friendly if a little slow but to be fair it was a sunny afternoon and there were quite a few people in the bars and outdoor seated area. We ordered 2 of the small plates, bread & oils and the pork belly bites. If you like pork with crackling and a caramelised apple sauce then don’t miss out as these were some of the best we’ve ever tried! Sadly the food was let down by a very average bread & oils. Two half slices of bread and a couple of strips of flatbread were verging on ridiculous. Such a shame when the pork was so good. We may visit again but we’ll probably avoid the nibbles.

Came in for a last minute bite to eat and a few drinks with family which was great. But the evening was put off by a person that came in, he was not happy that the bar had shut, the manger on duty I believe from different interactions explained time had been called. The individual did not expect this, the manager explained and the person continued to not listen. I usually do not leave reviews, but considering the person claimed he would leave a bad review just because the pub was closing was ridiculous. The person continued to throw verious slurs that were not appropriate. I am happy the manager on duty I believe even gave his name to the individual and stood his ground. Thank you Tim for giving the most on shift, but not to allow that person to effect our evening. The family agree that you done a wonderful job, and thank you for allowing us to have a venue to go to that does not allow discrimination or allow individuals to cause distress to others. We really enjoyed and that is why we returned for the Monday night grill. We as a family highly recommend the Bun penny, and thank you for putting customers first and doing the up most. We will continue to help and support a local business, but more for a business that cares for thier custom. Thank you from the family and myself. Also the lemon meringue is a must.

Shown to our table but no one came to take a drinks order. 2 visits to the bar to get drinks later we did finally get someone come to see us. And that’s when it all got much better. Food was excellent, one steak and one liver and bacon and one of the most generous cheeseboards (thankfully we were sharing) with a really good Stilton and and great smoked cheese, and by then the service was spot on The place is a busy pub which you are insulated from in the dining room, unless of course you’re thirsty.

Please see edited review below this original one. It was my husband birthday today just had a family meal at the Bun Penny First class food Well recommended The only comment was the lady on the door who had a slightly aggressive manner about me not wearing my mask properly. I'm fully aware but didn't like her tone. This is a difficult time for all. Edited review:- Had family meal this afternoon 9.6.24 Although the staff were very helpful there were a couple of issues. Firstly my Yorkshire pudding with my roast beef was burnt and dry. I did however get a replacement. Secondly the wait having ordered desserts took absolutely ages to come out - my sister in law having to remind the staff (it wasnt busy at the time) and thirdly myself and my other sister in law's dessert the panacotta with rhubbab was awful - the panacotta was fine but the rhubbab itself was unedible this however was rectified on the bill. On the whole my family and i were disappointed today having eaten at the Bun Penny before when the food was of a good standard. I have deducted a star due to the above revised review from 4 to 3. With the increase in prices of eating out, the food served should be 1st class!!!!

On a Wednesday they do a free glass of house wine with any main. They didn't mention this when we ordered. Luckily we spotted it on the menu & then had to go and ask for our 2 glasses of wine. The meals were ok. Just frozen pub grub. Not home made or any thing. No one came back to check if our meals were OK. Also don't agree with the automatic service charge added onto the bill. We tip when & how much we feel the place deserves. This isn't right!

We waited a long time for someone to come and ask us what we would like to drink, then even longer for someone to come and take our food order. In the end, after waiting over twenty minutes, I went to look for someone to take our order. The food was excellent and we all enjoyed our meals but after we had finished, no-one came near us and again after twenty minutes I went to find someone. To make matters worse, 10% service charge is automatically added to the bill, when to be honest we wouldn't have chosen to pay anything due to the abysmal service. It's a shame as we have eaten here many times and enjoyed coming here, but it will be a while before we visit again.

Pleasant surroundings, professional staff, who are helpful, great food and reasonable prices. My sister and I have visited 5 or 6 times when on holiday here, and always look forward to our visit andfuture visits. I had a steak cooked perfectly, my sister had scampi which was succulent and piping hot. BUT the best bit ever is the Lemon Meringue desert, I am 66 and can honestly say the best desert I have ever had.

Staff friendly, polite and helpful. I had issues with the QR code pay but the staff were able to help. I took my mum and she enjoyed her lunch deal fish and chips. The portion size for her at 83 was just right. Certainly recommend The Sailmaker to family and friends.

Brilliant service and great food, lovely view of the sea from the decking out front, fish and chips were excellent as were desserts.

Overpriced food. Not a great choice of drinks. Definitely not "jolly". Very disappointed.

Great location overlooking the Solent, with the Isle of Wight as a backdrop. Had the Fish finger sandwich with chips, delicious although a Big sandwich. Others had the Ceasar salad with the Fishcake. All excellent.

My local kebab takeaway, love a good kebab with chippy chips! Goes down well with the kids too. Partner has fish and enjoys it
