The Castle Inn in Waveney

Stayed here for one night, beautiful room with lots of nice little touches. Complimentary breakfast was super tasty and everybody was really friendly, would come again.

The staff member (I did not catch his name) was welcoming and friendly - but in a sincere way, it was not intense and trying too hard! FWe went for lunch and had a starter and main for £19 from the set menu - this was good value and tasted delicious. The spring rolls and cod goujons to start were excellent, as were the sausages and ribs for the main. The member of staff was busy, but still able to deliver a very good service. Often conversing with other customers as well. I would have left a tip, but we were in a rush the card machine did not prompt us to do so and we had no cash! I'm sorry about that, but we will definitely return and recommend you.

Great food and service, could not fault it! Had spicy beef, gren curry and sea bass the starter- spring rolls and prawn toast when fantastic!

We went here for a Sunday lunch and to see some live music care of the fabulous Steve Arlene Trio. I had a good feeling about The Castle Inn when I called for a reservation, it was all very easy and relaxed, super friendly lovely proper old pub. The Sunday roast was outstanding, I was very hungry, bordering on hangry, so I went for the 'trio' option which meant I got to sample roast duck (amazing) roast pork belly (also amazing) and roast lamb. The lamb was tasty but a tad dry. All the veg were fantastic, friendly locals, good beer and the band were great!

Huge choice of 3 menus by 3 chefs. We ordered food for 7…so took a while but when arrived was delicious. The roast could do with more gravy. We did ask but never arrived! Plates were hot. Wonderful afternoon at this lovely pub come restaurant, in the centre of Bungay. Had some beers and some food great service from Olivia throughout looking forward to return and highly recommend if visiting this area of Norfolk.

Visited The Castle Inn for lunch. Asked if we could come in with our small dog and received a very warm welcome and was allowed to sit in the bar area. Was surprised to see several Thai and Cambodian dishes on the menu. We ordered Som Thai with chicken wings and a Cambodian breakfast. Both dishes were delicious with an authentic amount of spice. We also noticed the toilets and the premises were spotlessly clean. We are looking forward to returning and enjoying some more delicious dishes.

Wonderful hospitality from the landlord and all the staff who were delightful and very welcoming. A very cosy pub on entering with the wood burner blazing away and my room upstairs for the night was also lovely with a comfortable bed. Breakfast was a good as it gets in hotels. I highly recommend this place to anyone wanting to dine out or book a room. A+++++

Not a good atmosphere or experience. Table booked for 7.15pm, food arrived around 8.30pm. No warning that it would take over an hour. Customers should really be given the option of whether they want to wait that long. Tom Yum soup was bland without seasoning. The piece of fish was tough and appeared over-cooked and microwaved. Same with the mussel. It would not detach from the shell. The tofu stsrter was OK, satay sauce OK. The table next door sent their pork back as the lady said it was so tough she couldn't chew it At the end of the meal we couldn't wait to leave...but were held up because of a problem with the til. A bit of a disaster all round really. I felt for the two waitresses who did their best. It was one of those meals where we were with family we are visiting and we didn't want to spoil the evening by complaining. A vast improvement is needed unfortunately.

My husband to be and I stayed at this lovely hotel for 2 nights. The rooms were very spacious and clean & the food was gorgeous. We had an evening meal the night before our wedding at St Peter's Hall which was lovely and the waitress service was very good even though the restaurant was very busy.. We also had a brilliant breakfast both mornings of our stay, the second morning there was eight of us and we wanted breakfast outside in the pretty garden as the weather was so nice . Nothing was too much for the two lovely ladies that cooked and served our breakfast which made our stay there perfect. We definitely recommend this hotel and will come back when we can.

Stayed one night to attend a show at the local theatre (also amazing) The staff are lovely, the food was lovely, the locals we met post show were lovely and the shops in Bungay sell fantastic local produce. We had a lovely room which was spotless and very comfy, some very nice biscuits too. Thank you. We will be back

I stayed over the Christmas period and had the most pleasant time! The room I stayed in (Mettingham) was spacious, comfortable and clean and I could not fault it in any way. Also worth noting the very comfortable bed that I was informed was a recent purchase, lush! The restaurant/bar downstairs is also great for socialising with the lovely staff and owners, I will definitely miss Chan, Stuart, Lindsay and Olivia and will make the greatest effort to pop in and say hello when I’m next in Bungay. The food is also delicious, especially the complimentary breakfast! However, the evening menu is also tasty and includes a wide variety of dishes, but I highly advise anybody to try the pork belly noodles. Overall 5 stars, would give it 6 if I could. Hope to see you again soon!

Booked to stay for 3 nights ; bar and restaurant closed for 2 days and we were not informed prior to stay so the only facility actually available was the bedroom. The bedroom was over the kitchen and was unbearably hot ; we had to shorten our stay because of this. However , the staff were lovely and the one meal we did have was excellent.

We have just had lunch at the Castle Inn in Bungay. The food was excellent. It was freshly prepared and piping hot. I had the best Pad Thai I have ever had!

Great place to stay. Comfortable rooms and really friendly staff. Right in the heart of Bungay with lots of independent shops. We were lucky enough to be staying here when it was curry night. Fantastic food!

Just spent a long weekend at this little Gem. The staff were friendly and attentive and the food was lovely. The bedroom was just what was required after a long day with a quiet room and comfortable bed. They have a strange but wonderful approach to the fruit basket in the room, being filled with various styles of chocolate, allowing a luxurious end to the day. Will be back in the autumn for round two.

Wonderful weekend spent here with friends. 8 in my party, stayed overnight in the accomodation, the staff were fabulous and couldn't do enough for you. I would highly recommend the restaurant the food was amazing and the chef made a special meal for one of our party who has food allergies. 10/10

Stayed here for b&b; as we were at a wedding locally. Friendly welcome. We were shown our room, pleasantly decorated, comfortable - could have done with a second chair; tea, coffee - and very impressed that soya milk was provided as well as normal, cow's, milk - as well as chocolate biscuits and a sweetie jar. As well as the room key we were given a key for the door into the building from the courtyard for later.

After reading other reviews on TripAdvisor decided to try the Castle Inn for Sunday lunch. I was a bit concerned as our table was sticky and that is a pet hate of mine.I had the Sunday Roast and my husband had the chicken with the dauphinois potatoes. The food was incredible all round. Our desserts were also very good. We actually returned a few days later for an evening meal as I wanted to try the fish, again food was very high standards and table was not as sticky! I highly recommend!

Although Mark and Tanya were away, the friendly staff gave 9 of us a great welcome on a Friday evening, and even prepared a fabulous meal for us all. The old fashioned rooms were spotless with coffee and tea making facilities (plus biscuits) on the table. The breakfasts were first class with everything freshly cooked, and at all times nothing was any trouble for the lovely staff.

Visited last Wednesday evening for dinner to one of our favourite restaurants. Made very welcome and after a little confusion sorted out drinks, the white wine was not particularly cold and, as it was in a wine container with no ice, got warmer as the evening progressed. The starters were excellent battered assorted fish and courgette and mint soup. The mains a bit more problematic. My wife had a nicely presented plaice, the other three of us had the duck. The menu promised duck breast with a shredded duck croquette, this was two piece off a duck breast with a large potato croquette in which all three of us struggled to find any duck, disappointing! The waitress, when taking the dessert order asked if we wanted coffee and we said that we would like it after the dessert. After the desserts we waited foe some time while the waiter and the waitress chatted but no one took the coffee order. In the meantime, and this was before 21.30 the chef came in and turned the lights off and the waiter sprayed and cleaned the tables around us so we asked for the bill, reluctantly left a tip and went home. I still give four stars because I put it down to a one off issue and will return but next time hope that things are back to normal

Fortunately, the only male member of bar staff was working, as no one else can pull a decent pint. We ate in the lovely garden, shielded from the sun by the beautiful bean tree. We shared a fish platter, which was delicious, ratatouille aside. Maybe use solid fencing to screen the kitchen and freezer, and ask the kitchen staff to lower their voices and reign in the swearing. Just a thought!

Nice pub, nice garden, nice service -- but there's so much more. The chef here really loves food and is a brilliant original cook. Veggies, go for the Cauliflower Steak! The Crab Au Gratin also sounds great, and my companions were delighted with their dishes which included a best-ever BLT with special trimmings. I should add that we ate very late for lunch, and the service remained extremely welcoming and friendly.

We have visited here a number of times for lunches and dinner. There is a good choice on the menu with gluten free options. The food and service has been consistently good.

Enjoyed our delicious supper in the pretty garden this evening. I think The Castle is my new favourite in Bungay! Nothing at all to complain about. Very happy.

Stopped in Bungay on Sunday 9 June and found the Castle Inn for lunch. It was a lovely establishment, we had the Cromer Crab with new potato, fine beans and salad with bread and butter, followed by chocolate taster and coffee it was awesome plus the gin and tonic umm. Would come back here again. Good service too.

The castle inn is an extremely well kept and run establishment. The staff are extremely good at their jobs. Never had any complaints about the food and the Sunday roast is the best we've eaten. Always made to feel welcome

Just back from an evening with a large party of painting friends. We had a great evening, food was plentiful, well presented and cooked. The staff were friendly and helpful. Decor was country modern, low key, not fancy. I would recommend it for friends and family outings.

What a fantastic evening meal. The food is to die for. We came to this area 5 years ago and had two brilliant meals and booked this time hoping it hadn’t changed; if anything it’s only got better. Thank you for such good quality food at realistic prices.

My wife, two of our sons and I enjoyed an excellent lunch here after completing a 5.5-mile circular walk starting at the nearby Bigod Castle ruins. We sat in the garden at the rear and thought the service was very good: all orders, drinks included, were taken at the table, and the staff were polite, helpful and efficient. The food was excellent. There was a good range of dishes, which were well-cooked and -presented and generous (without being over-facing). The beers we tried were enjoyable. We look forward to another visit.

I knew that our meal and visit was going to be lovely but our food was much tastier and prettier than what i was expecting and the service was really friendly.

Have eaten dinner here twice and whilst smaller compared to other restaurants, there are sufficient staff to give quiet attention to customers without going overboard. The menu is different and varied, so this is a plus.

The Castle remains Bungay's best. Food, atmosphere, service are all excellent. Booking would be a good idea.

Just a light lunch on Saturday. Had the mussels in a creamy wine sauce. It was absolutely amazing, much better than I was anticipating. Coffee was nice too. Would recommend for a light bite.

After several visits over the past year it was a pleasure yet again to visit The Castle Inn. After a modest but attractive refresh, the ambiance was just as good as our previous visits.

Probably the best place to eat in Bungay and has been serving great food for years now. It isn't cheap but the quality of the food is always top notch and the ingredients are locally sourced wherever possible. My only slight issue is the service has become patchy - it can be friendly but I've been in recently and found that the staff haven't got time for you.

Staff were really friendly and inviting. Nice quiet environment in a well decorated pub with some character. Didn't have to wait too long for our meals. The food was excellent and thee portions were a very good size and reasonably priced. Would definitely recommend coming here (suggest you book during busier periods).

A very pleasant stay and our second visit at this time of year. Our room, 'Wingfield', was warm and cosy with plenty of space and a nice en suite bathroom, and the bed was very comfortable. One thing, the hot water in the bathroom could have been a bit hotter: I forgot to ask about this so possibly could be adjusted. Nice cotton sheets and duvet, fluffy cotton towels and a robe to use if required. Breakfast on both days was very good and served by the chef - a different chef each of the two days we were there - both were very helpful. Gluten free toast was not a problem.

lovely little restaurant, great ambience, the right amount of space between cosy tables. Lovely to see six being seated comfortably with two on each long side and one on each of the ends which always allows for easy conversation. Food was slightly slow to appear but was well worth the wait. Would definitely visit again.

Service can be slow and disorganised. Garden is nice in summer, except they allow smokers so not only can that ruin your lunch outside, the smoke can blow indoors so be careful where you sit relative to the door.

We stayed here just one night whilst on a self guided walk in the area. Only 4 rooms and we plus friends took 3 of them. All rooms spacious, very clean and well equipped not to mention unique because of the age of the place. Our evening meal was excellent in all aspects. Breakfast was excellent, tailored to our requirements. Staff were very nice, friendly and helpful. Thoroughly recommend.

Sadly dining at The Castle Inn was a comedy of errors. We had booked for a party of eight and were squeezed onto a table for two and four pushed together so the seating was cosy.

Visited with friends for an evening meal. One of our friends is wheelchair bound and was quickly accommodated and the staff couldn't have been more helpful. The service was friendly, unobtrusive and attentive to detail, always good to see the water replaced as the jug empties. The menu suited our individual tastes, whitebait and calamari was perfect as was the melon and parma ham. For our mains two of us had the duck. I had a very large and nicely cooked plaice fillet { Nice to get away from seabass on restaurant menus) , whilst our other friend had an excellent tender, and cooked to his liking, steak. Prices are reasonable so all in all an evening to be repeated soon ! p.s. wine list reasonably priced and plenty of choice !

I stayed for four nights and had a lovely time. The staff were unfailingly welcoming, polite, friendly and charming. The food was wonderful. My room was spacious with a large en suite. It was very clean. The bed was comfortable and my room overlooked the pretty courtyard garden so was very quiet. I would certainly recommend this as an ideal place from which to explore the local area.

Came here a couple of weeks ago to celebrate my husband’s birthday with family and friends. We started with jugs of Pimms before dinner in the beautiful courtyard garden, surrounded by flowers and herbs. We all had dinner, I chose a delicious crab salad, perfect for a hot summer’s evening. Service was relaxed and friendly throughout. I highly recommend this lovely place - great food, great atmosphere and great Pimms!

Met some old friends for late supper, we had the table in the back bar and enjoyed a ridiculously good caesar salad and burgers, along with games of Yahtzee and Bananagrams. The food was beautifully presented, local, delightful and we didn't feel at all rushed, despite being total board gaming table hogs. We often have our working lunches here too and it's always remarkably good. They have some really interesting plates on the menu, but - good lord - they do the standard, classic items well!

Upon arrival, we weren't greeted and I was the one to greet, which received a response of a blank look. I had to guess and ask what to do ei will I be seated? So I order at the bar? Is there any space?! Staff didn't seem to be well trained or know what they were doing. We sat outside, no one approached us. We went in and ordered food and drink. We were not given any cutlery when the food arrived and no one checked to see how it was. So many wasps outside (I know not the pubs fault but they could have had a wasp deterrent). The bench table was wobbly and therefore my brother spilled his drink. We went in and told the staff and received two napkins to clean up a pint of coke... what?! We weren't offered a replacement drink either. Won't be returning

We were really impressed with this inn. The interior is really welcoming. There is a lovely outside space and the food was excellent as well as being a bit unusual. Best Fritto misto I’ve had for a long time and a really excellent burger. Beer and wine at reasonable prices and unusual. Superb front of house.

We chose the Castle Inn because it's about halfway between our house and that of the friends we wanted to lunch with. There were one or two other options but none sounded that tempting, and the good reviews of the Castle persuaded us. They turned out to be absolutely spot-on. We know Bungay well but as it was our school-run destination, we'd never been to that pub. More fool us. Parking was easy (just as well - Bungay isn't awash with free parking) and we entered to a charming welcome. The dining room looked inviting but it was a lovely day so we sat outside - very comfortable with a HUGE leafy tree for shade, and nice pots of herbs on each table. We were given instant drinks & menus plus sight of the specials board, and from there on in we simply couldn't have faulted it. If I was to list the delights in order, the most outstanding feature was definitely the staff. We encountered two young employees, both of whom looked after us brilliantly. They really were extraordinarily astute - service was absolutely top class and done with enormous charm while being unobtrusively efficient. We all noticed. And then there was the food - EVERY course was quite delicious - a chilli beef starter was a huge success, mackerel salad ditto and although I wondered if my husband's Caesar salad might have been a bit dull compared with everything else, he said the chicken was cooked to perfection, which in that dish is surprisingly rare. As for the belly pork or ribs or whatever they were - they were demolished in minutes and were, apparently, to die for. We hope he didn't - but if he did, he most certainly will have died happy.....This was such a lovely place to come and we'll most certainly be back. Our sincere thanks to all concerned.

We had pre-booked a table for 12 of us for a family celebration on a Sunday lunchtime. The whole experience was great - making the arrangements ahead of the day included preordering our mains which was not a problem. The food was lovely, well presented, fresh and delicious and it all came out together. Desserts were equally delicious.

Staying near Bungay for the weekend we wanted a nice meal to round off a sunny Saturday tasting the local wines. The Castle Inn was a god choice, a very pleasant ambience, helpful and friendly staff and great food. As a main we had the night’s speciality pan fried skate, one of my favourite fish and it was very good. Well worth a visit.

Very friendly restaurant with rooms. Beer garden at the back of the Inn is a particular highlight. Food is precisely cooked, to a pretty high standard, and very tasty.

Stayed a couple of nights whille visiting family in the area. Excellent dinner with local ingredients. My husband was very impressed with his cooked breakfast the next day. The rooms were comfortable, the bathroom somewhat squashed into the room but as the building is extremely old this is to be expected. Its historic feel more than made up for this slight inconvenience. What really made the stay was the lovely, friendly young staff who were happy to stop and chat to the guests.

We visited on recommendation from our self catering accommodation when visiting from New Forest. One of the best meals we have had in a restaurant for a long time. The presentation, flavours & quality was exceptional. We had three courses and none disappointed. The attention to detail was exceptional & such friendly service. Would highly recommend & would certainly is it again.

What a wonderful experience to lunch here. The atmosphere is relaxing and the staff very helpful and the service excellent. Now the food, oh the food. So delicious and mouth watering. One diner however was quite rude in that her food didn't come to her quick enough. The owner explained that the food is cooked to order and cooked correctly. This was handled very professional. What a great place. Food was amazing. Everyone enjoyed themselves and the age range was 70 to 15. The steak was great and the merlot sauce was much enjoyed. Pork was lovely and the apple crumble was to die for. What topped it off were the two girls who looked after us so well. Nothing was too much for them. Top job. Thanks for making our evening so memorable.

Took my parents out for Good Friday dinner in their new home town. Chose the Castle as they allow dogs in the bar and they set us up a table as requested. They have a wide range of gins and a nice menu. The duck and the steak went down well as did the apple crumble and the rhubarb eton mess. Food was well cooked and nicely presented.

Last Sunday was Mothers Day and I treated Karin and her mum, Iris, to a perfect experience. This was our first time here and, as someone who has eaten in some of the best restaurants around the world, I was shocked by the sheer quality...

Don’t normally review places. But sadly on this occasion I feel I should. I took my family out for a nice evening meal. Starters great. Three of the four meals good the forth my daughters was found to have a rather large BUG in the kale. Not to make a fuse I politely called over the waitress to point it out to her. I will give credit they did not charge for her meal and But if I am honest it would have been nice to get a little more off the bill. Service was a bit slow. Over all acceptable

Last minute booking, could not have been happier. Friendly staff, great beer, not cheap, but quality was spot on.

I found myself dining on my own on Saturday night and was shown to a thoughtfully placed table. The service was friendly and efficient and the menu (as usual) was interesting and inviting.

We spent one night in this restaurant and small hotel having evening meal and breakfast. We were greeted with a friendly welcome by the young host and hostess and were shown to an extremely comfortable and clean room, one of the best we've had in Suffolk. Attention to detail like fresh milk with the upstairs tray added to the comfort we experienced.

What better way to spend a cold wet Sunday lunchtime than with traditional roast beef, all the trimmings and a pint of local beer? The roast was generous and delicious with all you could wish for. The apple crumble dessert was among the best I've ever had (sorry Mum). Service could have been faster, but didn't really need to be as we were in no hurry and the staff were friendly and efficient. Definitely likely to go back.

We visited this restaurant for Xmas eve lunch. I had fritto misto for starter and roast turkey for main. The staff were friendly and food was amazing. The whole party was very pleased and even had a kids meal to our delight. Always recommended and will be visiting more often. The only disappointment was no York puds with our meal.

We had our Christmas meal here last night. Food was lovely, staff were really friendly and left us to it so no rush to leave the table. The mulberry gin was delicious and the food was too. I had Christmas antipasti, cod and chocolate brownies. Perfect for a special evening with friends
