We visited today, we hadn’t booked and we turned up at lunchtime. A family of five, a couple of fussy eaters, and we can honestly say that the food was wonderful, all of the customisation was spot on, and very very good value for money. Staff were friendly and chatty, and the castle itself a really good visit.

After visiting the castle, we were in need of a latte and a piece of cake. There were a nice selection of cakes to choose from, and two of us went with raspberry ripple. My friend is gluten intolerant and went with the flapjack. Our cakes were delicious, rather large and a reasonable price. The staff were very friendly and helpful. I would recommend 🙂

Absolutely delucious Easter Sunday lunch for the four of us. 3 lamb roasts & a beef plus an extra bowl of roasties. Totally delicious. My sister is strictly free from diet, we took our own gravy granules for her & they did her some plain cauliflower, but I did phone them yesterday to request these changes. Puddings were huge. Apple crumble with custard, Eton mess & a vegan gf slab of flapjack. Staff are helpful, efficient & hard working. Thank you for a beautiful Easter Sunday lunch.

As a rule, I really like this place... But today, despite there being no warning or even sign on the main road, we were met with a sign saying it was closed due to a private function. Not a great experience for regular customers! A ten mile round trip wasted. Now I will need to think twice about going back. Disappointing as usually it is a good experience to have lunch at the castle.

Called in for a quick tea and cake before visiting the castle. There are a good range of cakes that all looked nice. We’d missed hot food as it is only served until 2.30 but there was still plenty to order and we only wanted a snack. The combination of cream teas and cake between us went down very well - very tasty. Service was pleasant too. Off the beaten track, but like the castle itself it’s well worth a visit.

Being a local to Totnes and enjoying a good full English breakfast. Its important to me that I try as many of the local cafes as possible. I have been very remiss in not going to Berry Pomeroy castle cafe for a long time. As it’s reputation has grown considerably recently. We had a big family gathering for birthday’s and i decided it would be good to finally have breakfast at the castle cafe. What a delight. The back drop of the famous haunted 15th century castle is pretty spectacular. The breakfast matched its surroundings. Hi Quality sausages & bacon. Nice egg. With toast and marmalade included in the reasonable price. The staff were pleasant and attentive. I would thoroughly recommend to locals or visitors. Next is to book in for one of their Sunday roasts.

We were refused hot food and we were told that they stop serving hot food at 2.30pm. It wasn't quite 2.30pm yet either. They could even be bothered to make us a cold sandwich...but they were serving tea and cake (it's nice and easy to slice s bit of cake...not too much effort involved). The place was half empty too, you'd have thought they could have done with the custom. The sign said they're open till 4pm...but it didn't say anything about hot food not being served from 2.30pm. Very disappointed. The last time we were here a few years ago it was a far better service with friendlier and more helpful staff.

We visited the cafe around 12.30 pm on 30/8 after a long walk around the castle grounds and we were hungry and thirsty. We chose an outside table and I went to order our food. At the counter I was informed. with no apology, that they had no chef so they could only offer cakes and drinks... not even a sandwich. We ordered two americanos and a mixed berry milk shake. The coffees were lukewarm and the millshake - which was also lukewarm due to the lack of any ice cream was too bitter for my grandson to drink. The table was completely sticky and had they taken the trouble to wipe it over between customers (they weren't busy), they would have realised that a bottle of mead purchased from the castle shop had been left behind by the previous customers!

I had family down this weekend and we decided to make our annual pilgrimage to The Castle Cafe. Every year it takes an age to get a menu, then again to order, get your food and pay your bill. If you arrive when it opens if you are lucky you will be able to leave by mid afternoon.Yesterday there appeared to be four staff members working and it still took 20 minutes to get a cup of tea. The food is lovely, as are the staff which is why we keep coming back. It’s complete chaos and the poor woman that runs it seems constantly on the verge of a nervous breakdown. I just don’t understand how after having the cafe for so long there still doesn’t seem to be any kind of order to anything. We’ll be back.

We were on our yearly stay in Totnes & did our usual walk from Totnes to Berry Pomeroy Castle on Sun 4 Nov. It was an exceedingly wet day, quite relentless with no let up but we decided to plod on & get to the castle & back before it was too dark. Rain soaked we arrived at the cafe which is always a pleasant sight. We always receive a great welcome from the staff who are helpful & polite. My wife has a gluten & dairy free diet so we had some chips, falafel & houmous & it was all very tasty. They do soya milk here for coffee which is great but they could maybe do with having a gluten & dairy free cake option- just a thought tho! It is always a pleasant place to be & despite the rain we enjoyed our visit & walk. Do recommend & will return on our next visit to Totnes- hopefully without the rain!

We really enjoyed our visit to Berry Pomeroy Castle. Our elderly aunt wanted to have a sit down and refreshments after all of her walking and went in the cafe an hour before they closed. She was told they were packing up as it it had been a quiet day. She asked for just a cup of tea as she was cold but was told that the staff 'had been there all day'. Not quite sure what that means but she was sent on her way quite upset. Very disappointing as surely a tea bag and hot water would not have caused too much trouble.

Freshly cooked and made (without a microwave) the food was lovely - especially the home made sweet potato and coconut soup! Very friendly staff and lovely clean and welcoming cafe. The tables weren't all squished in together either which was refreshing for somewhere like this although I suspect it may get very busy in the summer.

The cafe is a lovely place to visit as it's just like a cricket pavilion. We were made to feel very welcome and drinks were provided soon after ordering. We chose the galette and the burger from the menu. I was told the the burger would take about 20 minutes as the chef makes them from scratch, none of your frozen pap. It did arrive in about 20 minutes later and it was superb! The galette was great to.We spent about an hour and a half there as it was such a lovely place to be.

Yes the castle was great, lots for little people to runaround in and pretend to be knights but I have to say that the highlight was the cream tea. I've had quite a few (living in the West Country for most of my life) but this was the best. Every one I have in the future will, rightly or wrongly, be compared to this one. Huge fluffy scones, lashings of clotted cream and jam which was pretty much just whole strawberries. Didn't take a picture, I was too busy eating!

As a party of 16 we booked an evening meal here for September 19th over 2 months before our stay nearby. We were sent the menu so that we could inform the Anchor exactly what each person wanted for starter, mains and dessert and this was done promptly and the order sent back. Two days before we were due to eat there, the person who had organised the meal contacted the Anchor by phone to check everything was still O.K. She was assured it was. Our party turned up and ordered drinks in the bar beforehand. Ordering took ages and we were disappointed that the pub had run out of cabernet sauvignon. Not the end of the world ..... but it was a portent of what was to come. An hour later we were shown to our seats. Imagine our consternation when we were then told, despite the assurances only 2 days before, that none of the things that we had ordered months before were available and we would have to order from the totally different, and much poorer, menu that they were now using. It was too late to find somewhere else to eat so reluctantly we stayed and placed new orders. Soon after ordering, the waitress came out to say some of us would need to change our orders as they hadn't got sufficient prawn starters or fish and chips as a mains. We were less than impressed but felt sorry for the waitress being sent out repeatedly to give us bad news. The meal was edible, nothing out of the ordinary. Then we asked for the bills which we had asked to be done by couple. Every single one was incorrect. There was also a mysterious "extra dish" charged on each bill of varying amounts. When this was queried we were told they didn't know how else to put on a srvice charge!!!! It was absolutely unbelievable. One total mess up after another after another. Based on our experience this establishment should not be in business. Atrocious management that would have made Fawlty Towers look good. None of our group would ever consider returning. It was a memorable evening but for all the wrong reasons. I still can't quite believe it.

Traditional British pub offering reasonably priced food. Very welcoming and friendly staff. Don't forget to pay for the car park opposite if you are using it.
