Lovely pub, not for disabled people, no lift, all rooms upstairs.

Straight across from the railway station, a good few pub's nearby. Staying here for the weekend, watching Berwick Rangers match tomorrow.

One of the worst Sunday dinners I've ever had to wait nearly an hour for. And the dining room was cold.

We decided to go out for early Xmas dinner with our neighbours, We had drinks in the bar waitress came and took our order while we sat beside the fire , We had soup turkey and dessert was lovely my personal choice We didn't get much mash potatoes but it was really worth it so pleased we went and tried the meals again , we will be back

Outstanding service and really good food and wine to go with it. Had dinner one night, and thought of going the next evening, but sadly they closed early as it was Sunday. Can highly recommend it.

More than expected. We stayed in the apartment at the top of the hotel, so there were two flights of steps to climb. The rooms were clean, bright, and spacious with a private "large" bathroom with a separate shower, bathtub, sink, and WC. The hotel staff were very pleasant and were quick to help out with a payment issue that arose. Food was typical or this grade of hotel, with full English breakfast, cereals juices, coffee, and tea. I would definitely recommend this hotel as a great choice if staying in Berwick Upon Tweed.

Perfect stay in this dog-friendly hotel. The room was really quiet despite being on the street. Lovely high ceilings and bay window in the room. The bathroom was cosy but that’s fine. Great location for the station, restaurants, pubs and walks I will definitely return, me and my dog were really well looked after

Enjoyed our 3 night stay for a double birthday weekend. Located approx 100 yards from train station. Staff warm and friendly. Hotel looked like it had been recently refurbished. Baggage storage available at reception. Rooms clean with tea and coffee making facilities. Complementary water. Large en-suite (room 4) with good sized walk in shower. Excellent breakfast. Disappointed that the restaurant is currently closed for evening meals. A second disappointment, on our final evening after returning from a meal, we found that the bar has a tendency to close early if no one in, so we had to venture out again for drinks. Despite this we would definitely recommend and would return.

Situated only a couple of hundred yards from the railway station, it's ideally located for a drink or meal before catching the train. We arrived a bit early for the start of service (1700 hours) in the restaurant, so went to the bar for a drink first. A good atmosphere and the bar staff were friendly and helpful. The bar was pretty full for a Wednesday late afternoon (1630). Prices were good (two and a half pints of beer for £8) when you are used to London prices! We went through to the restaurant at 1715 and again several tables were soon occupied. Everything was very clean and the tables sanitized between customers. The food was excellent as were the staff, friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and chatty.

Dropped in here for a beer before getting the train home. The hotel is about 200 yards from the railway station and was an ideal stopping point for our last beer of the day. The bar was quiet when we went in and the receptionist came to serve us as there didn’t appear to be any dedicated bar staff, but this didn’t take away from the good service. Another bonus was this was the least expensive drinks that we bought in town that day. The hotel is an old building, which looks as if it has had a recent refurbishment. It is in a great position for thirsty train travellers and we intend to revisit the next time we go to Berwick by train.

Typical pub food on a limited menu. Quality was OK and prices were reasonable. The place had very little atmosphere - somewhere you visit for a quick meal, not linger over an evening.

Had a lovely meal here last night. Restaurant was fairly busy, our food arrived in good time after ordering. Burger was amazing and when I commented that on menu it said sweet potato fries but it came with thin chips the waitress went and got some sweet potato fries which were lovely and I’m glad I mentioned it as it was one reason if ordered the burger. Hubby and daughter enjoyed their korma curry with 50/50 rice/chips. (Although skimped on the chicken) good value, very clean restaurant and staff very pleasant. Managed to get a table for 7:15 pm when I rang at mid day. A couple of tables were complaining about how long they were waiting(50 mins) but this wasn’t our experience just an observation on the night, we felt the time waited was fine for good hot quality food.

Just been to The Castle Hotel for an early dinner. The staff were all very friendly and couldn’t do enough for us. We had a drink in the bar waiting on our table as we arrived early and asked for a window seat. My husband had Black pudding and goats cheese with salad leaves and balsamic vinegar and I had homemade pate with toast and a lovely jam. For our main course we both had Sunday roast. One had pork and the other had roast beef and turkey. The portion sizes were very generous but we both managed to finish it. It was delicious and with huge Yorkshire pudding. Prices very reasonable too. Will definitely return next time we are in Berwick.

Friendly staff. Good price on drinks, pub food nicely presented. Recent refurbishment and Covid awareness has left this fine old pub with a slightly clinical ambience, but I wouldn't mark them down for this; it's what we are being asked to do. The fish and chips were especially good. If you just want a "pint" you can get one for £3.00 😊😊

Popped in for a drink hoping to get a meal..... Not a chance... Nice looking place drinks reasonably priced... Staff.. . Let's say would like to be elsewhere. Tables like velcro quite sticky... Ask for service from the staff and it just seems to be an issue... Not allowed food in the bar even though other diners are eating in the bar. Either our faces don't fit or they aren't interested. Been here 1 hour only 1 table occupied in the restaurant but they still claiming its fully booked. Very rare somewhere I go has no positives but it's the last time I'll be here... Either too much custom or poor management...

Managed to book a table for 6 during a very bust time. We each ordered different starters and mains and all of us were delighted at the quality of the food and the brilliant service. We enjoyed it so much we re booked a few days later.

Superb lunch. Happy find! Having previously tried many other eateries, this is by far the nicest. Had a selection of dishes including the Parma Ham Brie parcels and the homemade lasagne and Sunday roast. Food quality is excellent for such pricing and portion sizes, presentation and taste strike of high standard and eagerness to do well. Simple decor, smart and elegant.

Had a very nice meal here .There is a good selection of beers and a wide selection of gins. Good service and good choice. Nice open fire.

Fantastic meal today for 13 people. Starters, mains and desserts were all well presented and tasted delicious. Great service and friendly atmosphere. The roast beef was so good, loved the roast potatoes... well done chef!

Turkey was tasty and succulent, pigs in blankets tasty, cranberry sauce luxurious, roasties perfect size and flavour and nice selection of veg all cooked to perfection. Staff were attentive and friendly. Enjoyed very much. Delicious, well-presented desserts also!

Ate here recently whilst staying in the hotel.I have eaten and stayed at the castle a few times and am never dissapointed. Food is really nice and service is great. Definitely go back

We took our Grandaughter for a meal here after being there several times before but not impressed with the food at all , my husband had a prawn cocktail starter which was rather tasteless and our Grandaughter had garlic mushrooms with a plate of salad , which she left , I had the scampi as a main course which tasted good but the chips were just insipid and undercooked and the salad on the plate boring .. no dressing .. my husband asked for the battered haddock he expected a large haddock but was served two fish fingers battered and chips with peas . My Grandaughter asked for a chicken burger which came battered ! No mention of this on the menu ! She spent most of her time trying to scrape the batter off the chicken and left this with the insipid chips and boring salad , I would think more care should be taken with all of the allergy problems now.. she can’t tolerate batter ! Anyway rather than make a fuss at the table I pointed this out when we paid the bill .. sorry to say but as locals we will not be returning.

Was sat down and given no menus, waitress came to take orders then suddenly realised there was no menus.2 starters forgotten about only got them when others had finished.Food was ok but not in a rush to go back as service was so poor.

Just left the restaurant. We didn’t have a good start as we waited 25 minutes for our starters only to be told that they had run out of one of the starters we had chosen. Main courses arrived and both the steak dishes didn’t look appetising. Steaks were not cooked very well and unfortunately were very tough, didn’t seem like sirloin at all. Onion rings were too greasy to eat. Didn’t get asked if we would like any other drinks during our meal even though our glasses were empty. It’s such a shame as The Castle had come highly recommended. Young waitress was lovely but the other member of staff on duty in the restaurant was rude. We wouldn’t go back

The food was amazing- we were so pleased with this restaurant. We actually happened on it while walking along the street. The visual appeal from the dinning windows led us inside. I would recommend it highly.

This place used to be good food & excellent value for money.The last 2 times I have visited, it has gone down hill for food quality, and have had to send food back.This is still a good value for money eatery but needs to take a look at the food going out to customers and bring it back to what it was.The bar is warm, welcoming and relaxed with comfortable seating and open fires.

This hotel serves good pub food. There's nothing fancy about it and it's not outstanding. But you get what you expect - good food at reasonable prices. The portions are very generous. The service is good. The bar and restaurant are very popular in the evenings so it's worth booking a table.

After phoning to reserve we were told it would be after 8.15 in the restaurant but to try in the bar area as if was the same menu. After an hour we decided to go with the restaurant at 8.15 but was told they were very busy and to try the bar after 7.30. Glad we did as the roast beef Sunday dinner was fantastic! Meat just melted in our mouths, great choice of before that come with the meal. Cabbage, peas, mashed Swede, roast potatoes and huge Yorkshire pudding to half fill the plate. Glad we waited and the lager washed it all down very well indeed.

Think the public bar may be overlooked as it is a hotel, but worth going in for a drink, not expensive and nice and bright, next to the station so handy if you are waiting to go somewhere or on your way back. The meal menu looks so good as well.

Our knit club were here meeting with friends , no knitting done just eat and there was plenty to eat . Thank You for the lovely evening

A family group had an evening meal here, sadly two of the dishes we had wanted from the menu were not available and we had to choose alternatives. The choices were unfortunately disappointing, however on a positive note the portions were good, the food hot and service was friendly. Most of the group were happy with their food but the lack of our first choice certainly coloured our opinion.

We were in a rush to go to an event and hadn't booked a table. The staff were very accommodating and put our order through quickly and efficiently while looking after the rest of the busy restaurant.

Well popped into have a quick lunch I was very disappointed we ordered fish when it came it wasn't fresh fish but frozen which with where we live I thought it would be fresh

On holiday in Berwick and have found that this is the pub for a decent pint. Lovely log fire and comfortable bar area. Had a meal here on the first night and definitely would have had a meal again on the second night if we didn’t have a prior engagement. Lovely burger which was cooked to perfection, and haddock and chips, again, very tasty. Decent value and dog friendly.

Well cooked home made food and an extensive menu. Reasonably priced. Friendly staff.yu can either eat in the dining room or the bars area.

We did not stay here but ate in the restaurant three times during a five night stay. Huge portions, beautiful haddock, chips to die for, possibly the best chips ever in the world, ever!!!!!!!!! Staff in the restaurant friendly but slightly cooler in the bar. They were not hostile, efficient rather than warm, if you get my drift.

Claims to have parking but in reality, only public on-street parking is available nothing to do with the hotel

cant comment on it as a hotel as i never stopped there, but....i was walking by with my partner looking for a place to eat, it looked nice and clean and was reasonably priced so we went in, from entering to leaving i cant fault the place. waitress service by a happy smileing waitress, ordered the steak and it was cooked to perfection, it was obviously a propper chief not a microwave king, i cant tell you how nice the food was. definatly a place to visit a+++++++ well done to all at the church that night

My partner and I popped in while passing by... I had the home made lasagne which was lovely and my partner had a steak that was cooked to perfection... Lovely place .. Lovely food ... Nice waitress... Defiantly recommend...

Myself and my partner (Now fiancee) had been eating at this place for the last year and a half, but now three big disappointments in the last four visits have reduced a prospective 5☆ review to 1☆.

I ordered the Sunday special, roast beef and Yorkshire pudding - it was fantastic! As well as well cooked and succulent beef and crispy Yorkshire pudding there were six vegetable - all fresh and beautifully prepared. Highly recommended!

We were staying at the Travelodge 20 mins walk up the hill. The food here was very tasty, large portions at a very reasonable price. There is a separate dining room and we ate both in there and in the bar area. It does get busy and you may need to wait. Very pleasant friendly staff.

Eat here on 2 Occasions whilst staying at the nearby Haggerston Castle.

You can eat in the bar or the restaurant here but we prefer the restaurant and the food and service is always good.

The restaurant was booked so I ate in lounge bar off the same menu as in the restaurant the staff were polite and helpful and the food when it came was hot and of good quality and they used local produce where possible.

Another lovely meal at The Castle. Took my mam and her partner for the first time. All chose the chicken tikka masala, which is a huge portion and very very tasty. Will def return on next trip to Berwick.

We dined in the Castle restaurant and had a great meal. Menu has plenty of choice. Burgers are quite something.. if you go for 'hot one' it certainly lives up to its name! 😀. Great food, wine and service. Excellent value!

Great food, great service, great value! Huge portions didn't leave room for desert, so had to go back for lunch the next day just so we didn't miss out.

We went to a Gin tasting evening (I do not like gin but enjoyed 2 of the 16) and I just went along for beer and food. We were told they were serving canapes so my wife suggested I made a meal before we went out. We should have known better as there were about 7 courses served between gin shots including delicious lamb burgers, smoked salmon and cheese, goats cheese and beetroot tartlets, Parma ham, and cakes (gin, lemon etc.) All very tasty and filling when you are as greedy as me.

Popped in Sat 17th March for lunch, didn’t book but staff found us a table. Lovely food, relaxing atmosphere. Definitely return on our next visit to Berwick.

We enjoyed a lovely meal with some friends. Most of us had the steak (there is a good offer including wine/prosecco) very generous portions and nicely cooked. Staff were friendly and drinks very good prices! We were asked how are meal was a few times which was nice. Definitely be back! :)

We went three times for meals meals at The Castle whilst staying for 4 nights. Could not ask for better meals in Berwick and the staff were really obliging. You must book as it is usually very busy.

Works Christmas party, food was brilliant as always! Staff friendly and chatty and the games where a added bonus! Every time we go it is great! Be back soon 😊

The castle is a very busy hotel/pub/restaurant but the food was well worth the wait,cosy place to rest up for the night too,staff very good,the food was gorgeous,was not xpecting the size of the portion I got and was very filling.

Good pub grub in the bar, where dogs are welcome. Décor a little jaded but comfy settees and interesting fireplaces. Free parking after 6pm in the train station car park.

Not a place to miss a favourite of the locals, the food was value for money and also the drink, the staff were friendly and helpful.

The staff in the restaurant were so friendly. It was a nice atmosphere to be here as a family.The food portions are MASSIVE and everything was cooked perfectly. It's pub grub as it should be. We walked out stuffed & happy and will probably return sometime this week!Great value for money.My banoffee pie pudding was amazing, see photo!

We visited on the off chance to see if there was space to go into the restaurant however they were fully booked. However luckily a group were just leaving in the bar so we quickly took their table and had a meal in there. Food was excellent service was also excellent. Portions were generous and delicious. Would definitely recommend but you need to book if you want to go in the restaurant.

Day out in Berwick a welcome stop before catching train back home wanted to eat but had a function on in restaurant otherwise we would have stayed longer good atmosphere friendly staff

The food here was very good and plenty of it. It does get very busy and it is advisable to book. However when we went although the staff were very pleasant and friendly it took an hour to serve us with a starter and a main course. There seemed to be lots of staff dashing about, maybe the way things are organised needs looking at.

Found this place while in Berwick last year so visited twice this year,Large portions but no lack of quality. Prices very good and staff very friendly but not the 'In your face' sort.It is best to book if you want to eat in the restaurant, but you can also eat in the bar area if you like.

Wew hsd booked a room at the castle and a table in the resturaunt some months in advance, due to a mix up with booking.com our room was only single occupancy. Kirstie found us an alternative (more on that in another review) and i must say she was extremely helpful, polite e, apologetic and did tge best that could be done in the circumstances, by way of apology for the room issue, Kirstie had arranged for our meal to be on her, what a lovely touch, food was ok, resturaunt was lovely, staff were great, Kirstie and her team are trying very hard and it shows.

I had dinner here with a group of friends. From the time we entered the premises the staff were very friendly with genuine smiles on their faces. We were a group of nine and it took twenty minutes for us all to arrive for our booked table but the staff were attentive whist we waited for our group to assemble. Very good service and all meals arrived on the table within minutes of each other, not always easy for staff when we were a larger than normal table. Very good well presented food at very good prices. Everyone in our group was very happy with their meals. Jugs of water and glasses on the table was not a problem. Would definitely recommend if you are in the area. We all lived a distance away but would happily travel back to The Castle again in the future. Thank you to the staff for such a warm and genuine welcome and service and the kitchen for lovely food.

Just called here for an impromptu drink and ended up staying for tea and what a surprise. Huge meal and very good price. Much better value than the local Wetherspoon. Would definitely recommend and will definitely be back. Lovely place with friendly atmosphere and staff. Next door to the train station so great location as well.

went here for a meal on a Wednesday night, i tried to book but was told that the restaurant was fully booked. We were told we could just come along and use the bar area and have our meal there. However when we arrived at 6.45 we were told as they were so busy they wouldn't be serving food until after 8pm. We were very disappointed after all i was told to come and use the bar area.I Explained to the waitress that i had tried to book, after this they were very accommodating and did make sure we got served straight away , however we didn't have the full choice of the menu as they were so busy. The food was absolutely delicious and the service was also excellent. We will defiantly be back ,( good menu when its available) , friendly and helpful staff

We had a lovely family dinner for my husbands 60th birthday food was its usual gorgeous ,waitresses was very friendly and very attentive

Had an evening meal here whilst visiting Berwick-upon-Tweed Very busy, bar area quite noisy but restaurant quieter, modern heavy wooden furniture very clean, Short reasonable wait for food, rather limited menu choice for each course however, food was very good and of ample portion and very reasonably priced. Staff were all friendly and chatty. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal. This restaurant is popular, it is, sometimes, possible to walk in and get a table but it is advisable to book especially in peak season

We were warned before we went to The Castle that food portions were good value. Wow. The food and service were excellent and the portions were huge and certainly not over priced.

We were here for a birthday party. There were 14 of us. The service and food was excellent. The cost of the meal including drinks was very good value .We will certainly come back.

We went here for lunch with good friends from Berwick as it was recommend , and we were certainly not let down, lovely restaurant, great surrounding and lovely staff, With a very good menu and certainly not over priced the girl came and took our drinks order left us with the menu and came back to take our order, on seeing the food that was coming from the kitchen we decided to go for the small portions and boy I am glad we did I had gorgeous battered fish with salad I could have had chips and the rest had the roast beef with five different veg and potatoes, If you are not a big eater go for it that is my tip.

I want to go back here - maybe next time we'll stay in their hotel, even if it is a bit noisy!We arrived early evening and settled into our B&B around the corner. This place was recommended for food and after a little walk around the town, we wondered in. It was very busy with large parties but we were greeted by passing staff as soon as we stepped in and given options. In the end, the bar being full, we were seated in the restaurant. Having had a big Sunday Roast earlier, we just wanted a snack and maybe share a dessert. The place is so delightfully traditional, I could almost guarantee some sort of sponge pudding with custard.In the end we didnt have dessert - because we were so FULL!I had soup, the bf had a sandwich and chips and we could barefully finish those generous portions. Had we had a little longer there, I would still have had dessert.

Joined a party here for a Christmas meal and will definitely be going back. Great food and lots of it. Service was really friendly and helped make it a memorable evening.

We had the whole main restaurant to have our Christmas meal which we had all pre-ordered. I had the pate which was very chunky and tasty served with a salad and lovely relish. The turkey dinner was huge (I did finish it but it took me over an hour, and most failed) The meat was chunky and the veg were nicely cooked and extremely plentiful with extra gravy and cranberry sauce. The cheeseboard was also large with a big selection. The wine by the glass is one of the biggest selection and cheapest in town for nice quality.All followed by games.Well done again Kirsty Jim and all your staff.

We have eaten here several times and have always been extremely impressed with value for money. The menu includes pub favourites as well as a good selection of meat dishes and specials. The menu at first glance does not look good for vegetarians but you only have to ask and it will be done. The staff are really helpful and service is good. Prices are fantastic and the whole is excellent value. It is a great place to call into for a casual meal. The restaurant is located right by the train station in Berwick.

Went out for a meal with all the family. The staff were all really friendly and chatted and joked with the kids. Food was amazing and great value! Will be back soon!

Varied menu straight forward classic food. Plentiful portion and efficient and friendly service. Good value for money busy restaurant advise booking in advance

We were sitting on very comfy high backed chairs in the very nicely set and decorated dining room. The staff were so efficient and kept very busy. Our starters were nice and we were pleased to see you could choose a small or large beef Sunday lunch. We got more than enough meat and loads on nicely cooked veg with a good large Yorkshire. Too full to have desert and very satisfied. The wine is very completively priced. I had the dearest red one which was lovely and not actually dear. The Malbec was also very nice.

We didn't stay here as it was fully booked. We were attending a function here for a friends birthday, think they took over the hotel , but we git a place close by. But we did arrive early to have a meal after a long journey, and it was great, ample portions, value for money and fab staff. Kirsty - my husband has not stopped talking about the tempura chicken goujons (I must get the receipe) Following a great night, and fabulous buffet. Jim very kindly drove us back to our B and B rather than us wait for a taxi with our son who has special needs. When we come to see our friends again, we will be checking in !!

Wow great Sunday Lunch and more than enough food. Almost every veg you can think of on the plate. The beef was fabulous and service was brilliant. The only fault I would have is the children's portions size was huge and to be honest if that was brought up to me as an adult I would not have battered an eyelid at the amount on the plate. Otherwise well done!

After a long walk I was looking forward to a evening meal and went to the Castle Hotel for dinner. The staff were prompt and helpful and I was shown into the dining room and handed the menu.The choice was mostly fried foods, I was hungry and decided to try scampi, not knowing what they were I asked the waitress. The meal was served, lots of fried food the tiny soft blobs inside the fried coating were tasteless and overcooked. The chips were ok but the salad again had an oily dressing. Didn't eat much.I was going to have a desert but after this actually didn't want to even order one.

Great place to eat and reasonable prices for both food and drinks ,it's great as they will do smaller portions for people who prefer that .Great tasty pub food excellent service and atmosphere,will definitely be back soon.

Visit Berwick every year and never though about here until I read the reviews.We booked the night before as advised as it gets very busy, even on a wet Thursday night. We were not disappointed. The food was of very good quality, portions enormous and very reasonably priced. Good quality beers on offer for less than I would have expected in a hotel.The two waitresses who served us were both very friendly and seemed genuinely interested which isn't always the case in other establishments.We will certainly be visiting again next year.

In at lunchtime, a group of 7. Service was excellent. Staff friendly and helpful. Food was delicious. Prices very reasonableOnly drawback - the portion size. They is enormous, the starters were the equivalent of a main course. We all left quite a bit of our main courses as there was too much. I would have given five stars if the portions had been smaller.

Driven past here every day of our holiday until the last evening when we popped in for dinner. Gutted! Wish we had tried it earlier. From outside it really doesn't look much. To be honest it looked like a typical gaunt of out of control alcoholics. But I was wrong. As soon as we walked through the door we were greeted by a friendly helpful member of staff who directed us to the restaurant and our waitress 'Kerry' who could not have been better. My wife had cheesy Garlic bread to start which was ok but not the best she'd had. I chose the Garlic Mushrooms which were fantastic. For a main course my wife chose the Scsmpi which was the largest portion she'd ever had and good quality 'whole tail'. My Gammon Steak was pretty good, and excellent value, but the portions of chips and salad that accompanied it was immense. I was surprised to find a choice of three real ales - not mentioned in good beer guide. Good quality was good and I would have rated a 4 star, but for the fact that the service was so good and the portion sizes do big and the price so reasonable.My only regret is that we didn't find this place till our last night, but we're back in may next year, so....One tip. Always call to book an evening table for dinner - it gets busy. Opens from 5pm.
