What a disastrous experience, avoid at all costs! To be advertised as a 'relaxing' spa break is an absolute joke, there was nothing relaxing about it. On arrival we wanted a nice chill, cuppa, bite to eat prior to our spa treatments - we promptly ordered food, bar staff were pleasant but very very slow. An hour passed & I chased up our food order, which arrived that late we had to rush it down to attend our booked treatments. What a great start to our stay! The chips were stone cold. When I say stone cold, they were not even luke warm & certainly not edible. A refund took 35 minutes to process, this had to be done by the ‘top’ Manager - really, for the sake of £4.50! The hotel had supposedly suffered 2 power cuts prior to our arrival & was absolutely freezing cold. We were assured this would be corrected soon. We had a table booked in the restaurant at 19:30pm, it was still freezing at this time & none of us could get warm. We returned to our rooms which were absolutely freezing cold too & even altering the temperature did not help! We were sat in our rooms with jumpers/coats/duvets around us to keep warm! POOL AREA - What Spa experience allows children in the pool, how is this relaxing for the rest of the guests? The pool area was rammed with lots of young children screeching/screaming & dive-bombing in the pool - not one member of staff noticed or stopped this. Our worst nightmare, we had come away for a quiet/relaxing stay. There wasn't a seat/table or lounger anywhere to be found. We managed to get into the jacuzzi, but this was also not working & had no bubbles! The water in the pool/jacuzzi was freezing; we didn't stay in there for long! Children had access to the pool area practically the whole of our stay. We would not have booked Slaley if we knew kids would be present - fact! The massages/treatments in the Elemis Spa were fabulous, however cut short by 10 mins; again this shouldn’t happen! The following day we decided not to return to the pool area, as children would again be present. Therefore, we decided to go to the bar/lounge area for a chill, chat, relax & a cuppa before departing. There was one person serving on the bar; he had to keep leaving his post to deliver meals to guests & the amount of people complaining about the service was ridiculous. We waited 35 minutes to order coffees/drinks & ended up leaving without being served. Where were the so called management team assessing customer service/demand? We checked out. Reception staff were very miserable on arrival & departure. On arrival, outside our rooms were 2 empty dirty glasses & outside another a plate with leftover food. When we exited our rooms these were still there - disgusting! The drive upto the hotel was absolutely horrific with around 150-200 really bad potholes in the road; this desperately needs resurfacing, as it could potentially damage someone's car, there was no way of avoiding them. NOT the relaxing break we had all hoped for & we will definitely not be returning. A 'Spa' break should be a time to relax, wind down & enjoy the experience, it was the furthest from this! The biggest insult was being given a £50 refund for each room (equating to £25 per person). The Manager Steven needs a course in customer loyalty/customer retention. We will NEVER return. Avoid avoid avoid, we would definitely NOT recommend. Horrible experience!

I would not recommend Slaley for relaxing Spa getaway. Arrived for my first stay and was rather impressed with the grounds and hotel, it is a very picturesque location, despite the multitude of potholes on the road in. However, it went down hill very quickly from there. One person was on the reception so waited approximately 5 minutes to be seen to and then went to my room which was clean for the most part but definitely in need of some TLC. I realise the building is old but there has been some haphazard fix ups with paint and poor plastering. Then quickly got changed to go along to the spa - there was no robe given to me at reception or in the room so I assumed there would be one once arriving at the spa. I walk to the other side of the resort to then we told I need my slip from the key card as proof of my room. I walk all the way back to get it and then when I get back to the pool I get a single towel. I then need a pound coin for the lockers which I don’t have and am charged £1.50 for a token. I also tried to book spa treatments early in the week to which I was told they were fully booked, despite the fact I had spa treatments included in the voucher!! When I finally get through to the pool, it is filled with screaming kids and no seats or loungers at all. I tried to swim which failed miserably due to the children so I hid out in the sauna instead. Later tried the jacuzzi, which is approximately a meter and a half wide, and had no bubbles. Later went to dinner, and went to the bar for a drink where they are extremely understaffed, waiting 5-10 minutes to be served. Then when we finally got seat waited another 5-10 minutes for our drinks. The food was served quickly and starters were nice however the mains were very disappointing and bland. Again desserts were fine. The room was quiet however and I did sleep like a baby. Breakfast was also good and self service so much quicker. However back at the pool again after breakfast at 9am, no loungers AGAIN and already filling with children. We were also told that we had to be out by 11am even though we don’t check out until 1 as purposely got the late check out. The staff were not particularly helpful or friendly and most looked miserable. It has been the least relaxing spa stay I’ve ever had I would not recommend or come back. I would have been very upset had I paid full price but given it was still £200 for the night I would not say it is good value for money. There are much much better spas available with much more relaxing atmostphere. I would describe Slaley as a leisure centre pool with spa facilities. Very disappointing given it was a Xmas present as well. Edit: we also went for afternoon tea in the afternoon the next day which was £30pp for frozen dry scones. Bought in cakes. And basic sandwiches. Nothing was home made, the scones were extremely disappointing. The cakes were nice but not much to flash about given they were clearly bought in. What an absolute waste of money and time.

Booked a rare trip away for my birthday. So disappointed. This is not a spa experience when you cannot access the spa (there was a waiting list to get in) due to a crowd of drinking, vaping louts. Jacuzzi full of kids with arm bands. Couldn’t book meal in restaurant. Rooms cold due to boiler fault and absolutely no offer of any compensation or more appropriately, a refund . Don’t waste your time and money , go anywhere else but here

Slaley Hall....Worst spa hotel ever. A family members recent experience was terrible for her birthday! No heating in the room so had to move three times, no treatments available, spa too full to accommodate and restaurant the same. Had to travel outside of the hotel to eat dinner. Totally pointless trip. Safe to say they won't be returning and neither will any of our family and friends. Don't waste your cash here!

Spa day experience. Mostly really lovely. I did have to ask about food etc as my spa experience had lunch included but I hadn't been asked for my pre order or given a time for lunch etc. Spa staff really helpful and lovely but experience was really let down at lunch. I pre ordered lunch (chicken salad) when I asked about it at around 12pm. Sat down in the restaurant at my allotted time (1.30pm). When I sat down I noticed alot of other people sat with empty plates waiting to be cleared etc for quite some time, and alot of empty tables that hadn't been cleared either. 45 minutes go by and I finally pluck up the courage to ask where my food is. I notice there's alot of food coming out to tables and being sent back as those tables had already had the food that was obviously duplicated while I was waiting a very long time for mine. After just under an hour my salad came. It was OK, quite small, not much dressing etc. The lettuce was quite limp and a little brown as if it had waited as long as me for us to meet but at this point I was absolutely starving and due to leave. I definitely wouldn't have it again. The flatbreads looked better but the organisation in the restaurant was just an absolute shambles. When my main arrived I asked for my dessert straight away as I mentioned before I didn't want to wait again for a long time to have my salad cleared and my dessert brought out. I don't think I was the only one who waited a long time. The dessert (brownie and fruit) was really delicious. Overall I would return but maybe on a weekday hoping that the lunch part would maybe be a better experience.

So the place itself was pretty nice for a few days getaway, but I have to say when I stayed here, I was really let down by the service, especially from reception at the time we arrived around 4 to check in, and the room still wasn't clean, so we couldn't go to the room till around 5, so you would hope the least they could do is offer a late check-out. One of the machines in the bar ended up taking my money without giving credit to play, but the reception again didn't help with this; they just left it for me to sort out because they said they couldn't. Also, it was a pretty quiet few days when I was staying, but the bar service was generally always pretty slow. I will say though the spa definitely made up for the hotel, and I would 100% recommend that

Seriously needing addressed for what they charge for welcoming paying guests spending a lot of money, unless there is a new golfing sport and golfers are using pick axes to hit the golf ball. 2. Bar drinks are seriously over priced 1x bottle cider and 1x pint lager £12.60 3. Out dated rooms, 4. People using mobile phones chatting on them whilst paddling in the swimming pool (there are children about). Spa treatment was fantastic thank you Izzy and staff in bar and restaurant was good 👍

Very disappointed with our stay at Slaley hall. We stayed 2 nights. Once we managed to get to to our room we were surprised with the poor quality of our room, making it feel like a premier inn. The air-con was also a nuisance, on its lowest setting it created quite a breeze in the room, and even when we increased the temperature to 26deg it still came out cold. The fridge also made a racket so we ended up turning this off also. In the evening we went to dinner in their restaurant at 7:15pm and had to wait until 9:00pm for the food to arrive and it was terrible! Not hot, some parts cold and quality wise was on par with a fast food chain. The complex feels like it’s understaffed and the staff that is there is mainly incapable/unqualified to do their job properly, even simple things like getting a drink from the bar was painful. Won’t be going back.

My partner and I love coming to Slaley. The rooms are beautifully decorated and very clean, the beds are comfortable, and the soap and shampoo smells wonderful and is great quality. There also are great views in most of the rooms and the restaurants and meeting rooms are all beautiful. We also love the grounds around the hotel, my partner golfs and loves the golf course, I love the walking trails that are nearby. It’s a beautiful area. Overall the hotel staff are very friendly and accommodating. The pool is great, and the spa is also great. However, please get a new head chef in the restaurant as well a better kitchen manager. The food is always just subpar, and there’s often a really long wait time for food to arrive with food often arriving cold. The price that you pay for the food does not match the quality. For such a lovely place it’s a shame that the restaurant quality is so bad, breakfast however in the morning is very good.

Good staff, but the kitchens are inconsistent, slow and the food is too expensive It took just short of an hour to serve a panini, despite the rest of the tables food being served promptly within 10 mins of order I requested the food to come in a takeaway box as I had to leave, due to the time for the food to come. The panini arrived in a pizza box and I'd describe it as deconstructed and stone cold. The process to get a refund took a further 20 minutes. The staff were good but I'll never return to Slaley Hall again now. Terrible experience and this isn't the first time something similar has happened to our group.

Slaley Hall is a former hunting lodge for the Priestman family and is an impressive place, the old part of the hotel is lovely and the new part is clean and tidy and what you'd expect for a 4* hotel. Rooms were clean and fairly spacious, although a bit chilly for my liking - nothing a jumper or extra blanket couldn't fix. The spa is excellent boasting a 20m pool for swim exercise along with a handful of smaller spa pools and a hot-tub pool. Sauna and steam room both good and the gym is adequately equipped for a hotel chain. The bar and restaurant food was all good and reasonably priced and breakfast was a buffet feast if you had the appetite for it. Worthy of note is the Whisky Snug with it's own menu of specialist spirits, some very old and the price for a dram of some of their bottles was as much as £165! Other snugs are available for relaxing with family and friends. Nice atmosphere in the place, would highly recommend. fyi, better than the Dalmahoy in Edinburgh and the Forest in Arden in Warkwickshire.

I couldn't fault the massage, the lady knew her stuff and did a great job. However, the afternoon tea service was something else. We waited over half an hour for the afternoon tea, and that was only because my partner eventually had to get up to ask about it's whereabouts. We then had to get up to ask for a cup of tea as the service staff were not paying attention to the room to see if anyone needed anything and kept dismissing the visual queues given that we wanted their help. We ended up leaving 15mins later as we still were sitting there no further forward. No one ever came around to ask how anything was, and for it being as quiet as it was, I found that quite a neglectful service. There is definitely room for improvement for the spa package experience in this place I'm sorry to say. Again though, amazing masseuse, which is a credit to the place.

We visited as a party of six (three couples) and booked three suites. We had two in the old hall and one in the newer part and honestly they were all amazing! All were different and had their own character, if you want views book in the newer part, but who spends all of their time looking out of the window. We stayed in room 355, "muggleswick" and it was a beautiful room, which I'm sure boasts the highest clothes hook in the world. 😄 Staff were welcoming and friendly and couldn't do enough to make our stay as expected. Food was beautiful and well presented. We had drinks in all bars as well as food and all had a great atmosphere and the same level of service. The spa was nice and relaxing and even though there were children all were well behaved. Treatment rooms are separate to the spa and are lovely and relaxing, I would definitely recommend a treatment or two. Would I go again? I wish I hadn't left! Well done slaley!

We had an enjoyable overnight stay at Slaley Hall, opting in for the dinner and breakfast deal. We enjoyed the location, having a decent walk at the nearby Derwent reservoir. Slaley Hall is an impressive building in a breathtaking location. The service was good, with everyone keen to assist where they can. I appreciate it’s a real challenge at the moment for the hotel industry, and especially with a hotel the size of Slaley. It’s huge, and aims to cater for a variety of clientele, however because of this it can sometimes fall short. The towels in the rooms were thin… and no dressing gowns. If this is a spa hotel more can be done to cater for spa users. Whilst the staff were very willing and helpful, they were clearly very young and I didn’t get the impression they were supported much by more senior management. For example, we were keen to enjoy the Whisky Snug room we had heard about, hoping to try a variety of whiskys. However nobody was quite sure whether it was open, and we eventually found out no one knew where the keys to the drinks cabinet were. We opted then to try the cocktail menu, however were put off by the fact they were pre-mixed. Some feedback would be for staff to be trained up on cocktails and drinks they were serving. Again, no criticism on the staff as they were very keen to help. Another point was the swimming pool did not cater for swimmers. It looked impressive, however was very busy with kids (no criticism) and there was no area in the pool to have a few laps. Overall we had an enjoyable stay, but this felt a no-frills hotel (which is fair enough). With a hotel this size you are bound to lose a bit of its original character.

Booked Slayley hall for a milestone birthday celebration. The location is stunning and the staff great. That can’t be faulted but the rest is in need of massive improvements. The room we had was ok but needed a refresh. We wanted to have proper family time and to relax but none of us felt it was aimed at that kind of break. It felt more of a wedding venue. I was disappointed to see the Jacuzzi was out of order for the entire time we were there. It is advertised on your website that the jacuzzi was available to use. If it isn’t - then it should be stated it is out of order. My family and I had no space to sit as the spa was packed out. I would not say it was a relaxing experience. We had our children with us and went to the games room later in the evening but we had to leave as there were drunk rowdy men shouting, swearing and wanting to watch the Rugby. Empty glasses and bottles just left strewn. The driving range was also closed. We were told because it was wet. The afternoon tea in our opinion was over priced for what it was. We chose Slayley as its child friendly ( we have a 10 and a 15 year old) but I would have to say that it was disappointing experience and not worth over the £600 that it cost. I understand that the hotel will have major improvements made in the near future, but the fact that it was a milestone birthday and such an expensive non-experience is incredibly disappointing.

Absolutely terrible from start to finish (only thing that we enjoyed was the spa, but if it's a quiet spa day or couples treat away go between 12-3pm as it is so busy with young children outside these hours, I spoke to a few guests who weren't very impressed they weren't told beforehand. Also if you don't have a treatment booked take your own dressing gown for by the pool as they are £40 each!😳). Be prepared to get new tyres on way back as so many pot holes from entrance to hotel car park. You have to take pound coins with you even though it's 2024 and most things are contactless you need cash for spa lockers and for games room. (Be prepared as we had none and they were no help). Had an evening meal in the restaurant, my partner received a burnt pizza so had to send it back. A member of staff came back 20 minutes later with the menu saying to pick something else by this time i was finished my meal and my partner didn't like anything else on the menu, so he had nothing to eat! Ran out of the dessert we asked for (Sticky toffee pudding, this was 8:30pm) They were questioning weather to refund us for half the meal of our spa package deal where we paid towards an evening meal as apparently it was for "free" even though you pay in the package £150+ for the room, spa, evening meal and breakfast! Don't expect a lie in as doors constantly banging from 6am in the corridors, either from hotel guests or cleaners. Dirty cups with rings in them at breakfast, asked for a new one and was just as dirty. Won't be returning and want everyone to be prepared it's not as classy as it looks.

We booked for a birthday treat away so was looking forward to it. Arriving at the hotel, the visual from the outside and the hotel lobby looked really nice. Unfortunately when we got to our room, it was very dated, bland and the heating didn't work. The temperature was around 14 degrees and it wouldn't get warmer. We left a second room card in the slot hoping that when we had finished in the pool it would have time to warm up. We headed to the pool only to be told they were at capacity and they would call us when it was our turn. Luckily we didn't have to wait too long, around 30 mins or so. We went down and the changing rooms were tiny, only one cubicle and not a lot of room to get undressed and changed. Once in the pool area, we struggled to find anywhere to sit and relax as all of the loungers and seats were taken up. The pool was very cold and the entire place was too busy for us. We had planned to spend an hour or more in there but after 30 mins we left and went back to the room. When we got back to the room, it hadn't warmed at all, if anything it got colder. We got ready to go to the restaurant and made our way down. The restaurant was nice, the menu has something for everyone but the food itself was very average. After our meal, we got back to the room to the same temperature when we left, cold. We called reception who said someone would come look at it but after 45 mins, no one had been. We called again and the receptionist apologised and came up to our room. He kindly moved us to a suite which was a nice touch. The suite was separated with a lounge and bedroom, both with individual thermostats. The lounge warmed up nicely but the bedroom remained at 14 degrees which wasn't ideal. Breakfast was nice, it was a buffet service with plenty of options and refreshed regularly too. To sum it up, the hotel is nice from the outside and the lobby but the rest of it is very dated and bland. For the price, I would have expected a lot better. Little touches were missing such as a menu in the room, more than one coffee sachet in a double room, wallpaper peeling, old curtain rails left up with no curtains on them, no toiletries in the bathroom plus a few others. Unless the hotel is refurbished or has some money spent on it, I don't think I'd be able to recommend it unfortunately.

I have stayed at Slaley Hall previously and liked it. Now under the QHotel brand it is extremely good with a particularly helpful and professional welcome from both Josh the Night Manager and Molly at Reception. I'm giving this 5 stars as overall it was really wonderful. We went away as a group of 3, it was meant to be 4 but one cancelled. We found the place itself really beautiful, chrismassy and calming inside. It was beautifully done up. We ate in both restaurants and both were great, good selection of food and very well done and tasty. The spa area was wonderful, we usually go to Stobo in Peebles and so far hadn't found anywhere that compares but I'd say this was up there. Really lovely, and loved the juice bar by the pool. The rooms were ok, not luxurious but comfortable. There was shampoo provided but no conditioner or body wash. A soap bar is provided. The treatments were ok, considering how expensive they were tbh I was disappointed. I had a back massage which was wonderful, but my facial and foot massage, if I had actually paid for those and not got them as part of a package I would have complained as they were not well done.my friends loved their treatments. Overall, would definitely go back.

Location is great for relaxing and getting away from the masses. Rooms are very good and the hotel appears to be very well maintained. Food was good and the service was okay... Staff were not that attentive, apart from those on reception who were both friendly and efficient. Onsite bar stopped serving at 10pm, which was both a surprise and a disappointment. Overall enjoyed the visit and may stay at Slaley Hall again at some point.

DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY! We stayed 1 night for a spa break. The room and spa experience were fine but the food was absolutely awful. On arrival we were told that the main dining room was full but we could eat in the Claret Jug restaurant. The Claret Jug was staffed solely by young inexperienced adults. We waited for over an hour for our main course only to be told the kitchen had lost our order! When we eventually got our food the batter on my wife's fish was soggy and inedible and my chips were stone cold. Breakfast was not much better - luke warm buffet food and coffee from a machine. I've had better food from well known chain hotels who charge less than half what we paid. This place is far from 4 star!

Last minute night away with the better half, very pleasant experience from start to finish! The staff from arriving couldn’t be more helpful. The room we had was lovely with all the amenities you would expect in a 4* resort. The Spa facilities were well appointed, jacuzzi, steam room, sauna and pool. You can have treatments ( surcharge ) like body massages etc. We had a wonderful meal in Mr Kennedy’s brassiere which was divine. We had complimentary breakfast next morning which was plentiful, full English plus continental options as well as tea and coffee in endless supply! All in all a very pleasant stay which we will repeat again someday.

A pleasant 2 night stay. Slaley Hall is a beautiful place to stay with stunning countryside views, a PGA golf course, and a spa. The large car park is a short steep walk to the main entrance, however, carts and butlers can help if needed. There are ample restaurants and bars, all of which are decorated beautifully. The restaurant menu had a good choice and plenty of availability. The rooms are also very pleasant with coffee machine, mini bar, large TV, and complimentary Elemis bathroom samples. The bed was rather hard, which made for an uncomfortable nights sleep, but nonetheless, we had a pleasant stay and would like to return.

Overall an OK stay, although our room which was supposed to be ready by 3pm was not ready until 4.30pm. We were offered a round of drinks but that kind of railroaded our stay a bit as we had planned to get changed an head straight to the spa. An offer of a late checkout would have been nice to compensate. Then we could hear next doors TV really loud through the adjoining door which I imagine is unlocked when in use as a family room. STAFF some staff were exceptional in particular Neville was fantastic, and Joyce dealing with our lost property. However whilst having the pre mentioned free drinks ours were brought to our table but one gent was carrying his familys drinks a couple at a time outside to a table where one member of his family was also disabled. There was no initiative from the bar staff to help this man or hold the door as he wrestled someones wheelchair in. I even got up to help. We decided to eat at this point and had to make 3 ammendments to our order as on 3 occasions a staff member approached to advise of something they didnt have on the already limited menu. SPA The pool is pretty cool and very interesting design wise. Nice hottub and Steam room. Sauna wasnt very hot. Staff here again a couple of members were really kind and attentive but one young lady who was overweight with glasses on was quite abrupt when we went to hand the towels back. Breakfast... A bit like organised chaos... I asked to be sat near a window and initially we were sat close to a window but facing a wall. We moved of our own accord to the next table which looked out of the window. No tea or coffee was brought to us or offered. There were coffee / tea machines situated in the corners of the dining room out of the way of everything else. To make this stranger... there was a toaster on the same place yet no milk. Making a cup of tea for the wife seemed like a trek around the room. The breakfast was ok pretty standard but lack of initiative here by the lady at the counter doing nothing when all the bacon was stuck together and when you went to select some bacon she held it with her tongs so you could use the other tongs in some weird team effort to obtain some bacon. Why not just seperate it as youre standing doing nothing. Dining room furniture is a little tired. We went for a child free romantic night. Paid £175 for a monday night and when we left we just felt short changed at every turn. We stayed a few years back before Covid and it was exceptional so such a shame its gone downhill a bit.

We booked a golf weekend with 20 like minded players, it wasn't our first time here so our expectations were high, however due to torrential rain the golf course was unplayable, on both days, something that can't be planned for, the facilities are excellent in the spa, but sadly our meal on Sunday night was a disaster, a problem with the service we sat down for a 3 course meal at 2000, and finally received our dessert at 2230, when the food did arrive it was ok, the manage did compensate with a bottle of wine, but this still didn't make amends,

Slaley Hall Hotel, Spa & Golf resort. First of all the important bits. •GOLF The Hunting & Preistman courses are both very good. Excellent even. The consistency of the greens and fairways through 36 holes is absolute. Not a single green was better or worse. The greens are a great verity of slopes and undulations and elevations. They were quick and difficult to read a challenge. Fairways and rough are consistent and very good. Especially for this wet autumn. One downside to the golf side was the price of buggies. £45 per buggy per day is extremely expensive. Proshop was £8 for 2 drinks and a mars. Extortionate. Overall the courses are great. •HOTEL. The room was very adequate. Comfortable and clean. Overall the hotel is clean. Service of staff is excellent. Prices again are expensive. £13 for 2 pints. Taking the P**s. £5 for a warm, pie / pastie or sausage roll. Again Taking the P**s. £1 for a game of pool. We ate in the restaurant in the evening the food was very nice and again service was very good. Breakfast was buffet and had a very good variety was well presented and hot. Coffee machine was poor. Not strong enough for me personally. •Would I play either of the courses again? YES. I'd walk through and would love to play them in a dry month. Very good. •Would I stay in the hotel again? NO. Too expensive not justified. I've stayed in plenty of golf hotels / spa's that aren't this expensive equally as nice a hotel.

EDIT SINCE RESPONSE I was given an email to talk directly about our issue which was sent two weeks ago with NO reply, fantastic customer service again. We arrived for my husbands 40th birthday to be met with a dirty room stained, lampshades mould on the curtains and white sticky stuff on the dresser. After addressing this with reception they sent a man with a cloth. I then had to go back to reception and they eventually changed us rooms explaining they had cleaning staff call in sick. This was not a great start to a special birthday not to mention it wasted an hour of our spa time. We then arrived at the spa to a tiny jacuzzi that would be perfect for a couple but no more if it was not permanently occupied. We then went for a meal in the main restaurant, ordered champagne and steak to celebrate for the rare steak that was ordered to come served medium/well done. Unfortunately breakfast wasn't much better with huge ques for a coffee machine that kept needing time to cool down. I would not recommend and we were so disappointed that this is the memory we have to make this special occasion.

The majestic appearance and grandeur of the building and grounds are beautiful. The hotel is set in delightful grounds. There are boards explaining the different walks you can do. However, for me, the room and food let it down. The problem in the room was that there was a chemical clean smell throughout the room, and because the window only opened slightly, it meant the smell lingered and even hampered our sleep. We left a note on the second day to ask that no sprays or chemicals be used. My husband has COPD, a breathing disorder. The smell, unfortunately, was, however ingrained The bed was comfortable, and the room was a good size. The bathroom would benefit from a hook. The spa, particularly the pool, is very good it just lacks a shower in the pool area, particularly after using the steam and sauna. We ate only once, the first night in the Claret jug, because being vegetarian, the restaurant menu didn't have anything for me.. We have eaten before at a Q hotel, and I find the menu restrictive as a vegetarian. The food, red pepper hummus with flat bread and a side order of stir-fried Edame beans and spinach was very bland and the hummus was shop bought. The cost for what I had seemed expensive £6. £4.50 for the beans. The service overall is good, very smart waiters and waitresses. Breakfast is let down by minor irritations, not being serviced with tea and coffee when you arrive. Having to fathom out how to use the machine and obtain hot water. Milk is being put in a tea urn. I saw numerous people waste teabags because they had put milk onto the bag, believing it to be hot water. Interestly, the sign was buried deep on the table. I suggested it may be better to put a large sign on the side of the urn. There was no sign on the urn on the second day of breakfast. The cooked food isn't watched over, so lids were left off, resulting in luke warm food and spoons were left in. I ordered porridge from the kitchen, which was delicious 😋 the ordered food from the kitchen was good.

Smokey wet log was put into the open log burner/fire, causing the entire place to be filled with smoke.
