The Castle in Islington

A few of us came in before a football game. Staff seemed offended we wanted to give them our money.

Rude staff. Don't seem to want to serve people to get their pay check

Had a lovely lunch in the castle yesterday Monday 7th April 2025. Everything was perfect especially Dane who was friendly, funny and attentive to our customer needs.

Solid choice of draughty and keg ales, traditional feel, clean and super friendly bar team - and good for a bit of early evening sun outside!

The server was amazing and the drinks were fantastic. Clean space with fun and welcoming atmosphere!

Nice huge red throne chair. Excellent pork sausage and mash. The gravy was soothing. However, i am used to a side of vegetables (usually green peas or sometimes broccoli) with my sausage and mash. They said that would be £4 extra! No thanks :(

Very busy pub on a Thursday night with great service. Prices reasonable for the City. Good choice of beers and shorts. Toilet downstairs. They do bar food. Loud evening may not be conducive to easy conversation.

Contraté a los de arriba del Castillo para un buen almuerzo familiar el domingo al día siguiente de la fiesta número 50 de mi hermana gemela y yo. El espacio era perfecto, el personal era tan atento y amable, la comida era perfecta. Una manera realmente perfecta de redondear un fin de semana encantador.

Great pub in a great location. I travel into Farringdon a lot and this is my first port of call before exploring London. Fast efficient service with a chatty vibe. Highly recommended

Food was not good, no one came to take our order for 30min. Atmosphere is good.

Not long popped in for my second visit and the atmosphere was good and friendly just like the last time I visited drinks were good still and food was yummy just like last time definitely going to make this my new spot cheers for a good time guys !!!!!!!!! 👍

The staff at this pub are incredibly rude . Most of them are disengaged with their job and treat it like a pesky chore, according to their facial expressions each time a customer approached the bar to order. The girl with long hair who also happens to be a manager has learnt to be passive aggressive before learning the ability to speak proper English, not being able to handle a situation without getting extremely emotional and defensive when misunderstanding my order. The other manager whose name I do not know was shouting swear words from behind the bar as the pub was closing and telling people to leave in a derogatory way. On the other hand there was an agency staff behind the bar who was extremely helpful and supportive throughout our visit.

Good boozer, bar menu was solid. Shame they were out of scotch eggs however the other items we had more than made up for it. Dark beers on offer were decent, service wasn't the most welcoming. Asked twice for pint to be topped up as 20% foam doesn't count. Pardon peppers were a highlight

Second visit to the Tuesday night quiz. Really enjoyed it again. Bar staff excellent, quiz host lovely, venue nice and food great!

El Castillo es un lugar encantador, vibrante y concurrido. Sin embargo, reservamos una mesa para siete personas, pero cuando llegamos a nuestra mesa, había una silla y una banqueta que permitiría acomodar a cuatro personas en la mesa. Cuando se lo planteaba al personal del bar, le decía que no había nada que pudieran hacer. Tuvimos que ir y encontrar dos asientos más de la habitación nosotros mismos.

Mi amigo reservó la zona de arriba para celebrar su cumpleaños. Desde el principio pudimos ver que iba a ser un éxito. El espacio de arriba estaba muy bien establecido, el personal no podría ser más amable y servicial. Quisiera destacar particularmente a William, Janet y Molly por su agradecimiento especial, ya que trabajaron tan duro para que fuera una tarde especial para todos. La comida era excelente - mucho mejor de lo que esperaba, especialmente dado el precio muy razonable. Muy recomendable

Poor beer selection and of those half are not available. No staff on today who have been trained how to change a keg. What a shame…

Very nice pub by Farringdon station

Held a private function at the Castle and had a really great time. The hot buffet food was excellent and service was friendly.

I stumbled into The Castle to avoid the blistering cold whilst waiting for a friend, and ended up staying here for an hour or two. A few rounds of Guiness helped to keep us warm which was decent but on the pricey side. We were a bit peckish and the menu caught our eye, with a wide selection of tasty sounding dishes. We settled on the olives (£4.50) and the fried chicken with chilli honey (£8). The olives were tasty and went down a treat. The chicken, however, was a let down. While the flavour was there, with a great crispy coating and a tasty dipping sauce that paired well with the chilli honey, it was a laughably small portion. Now I’m aware it’s classed as a ‘small plate’, but for £8 we were served just one piece of chicken, rather sadly positioned on an oversized plate which felt stingy, even for london. The service was perfectly fine and the pub itself is pleasant. With plenty of seating and a cosy atmosphere it’s a good place for a catch up with a friend or a spot of people watching. Would I recommend The Castle? If you’re in the area then sure, it’s a good albeit expensive pub that serves good drinks, however if you are going to go for food, just double-check the portion size before you order. Maybe if I’m ever back in the area I’ll give it another chance.

Our work group (around 40) booked the upstairs private room. It was a perfect size for our group, and the food was all delicious. Separate bar for us was perfect. The staff were all very friendly, and were kind enough to go downstairs to bring up cocktails for our party.

We had a lovely meal, and loved the crackers on the table! The staff were all excellent and very friendly. We came last year for the same Christmas meal (same group of friends) and will do the same next year. Thank you!

The food in this pub is shocking! In all my years on this earth, I have never been served boiled potatoes, described as roasted with a Sunday roast! The only half decent thing on my plate was the Yorkshire and nut roast! Crunchy cabbage, a few carrots and something that I believe was part of a parsnip, which all lacked any flavour! It was terrible! We requested the staff have a look at our plate and sent the food back! When it returned there was no difference! Please avoid this place for food.

Brilliant service, lovely pub, excellent staff. Molly and team looked after us all (35 adults and children) for a big Christmas lunch upstairs. It was perfect. Couldn’t recommend them highly enough.

From the moment we arrived, Molly was an incredible host, ensuring our every need was met with a warm smile. The afternoon was filled with mouthwatering a Christmas Fayre that the kitchen staff crafted with skill and creativity, showcasing the best of seasonal flavors. The enormous tree and decorations created an inviting, cozy atmosphere and made the Christmas celebration feel extra special. If you’re looking for the perfect place to host any kind of gathering, I can’t recommend The Castle enough!

We had a table upstairs booked for a Christmas work meal and it was fabulous. Even though downstairs was so busy, upstairs was magical with a lovely festive setting, music on but not too loud, and really attentive and friendly staff. Thanks so much for a really lovely evening.

Beyond disappointed. It was SO over crowded, we had to fight through walls of people to get through the bar area to go upstairs. Our table was being occupied when we arrived on time. It just wasn’t good so we didn’t bother staying, we ended up else where.

I just spent the last fifteen minutes trying to write a decent review about this place, when all that needs to be said is that the bar staff don't care, and the reason this pub still trades is because of how close it is to the station. I worked and lived here for three years in my twenties and I am really sad to say that it is now basically the alcohol version of a Costa. I so wanted for this pub to have evolved in the ten years I hadn't been there. I can confirm that it is the worst. Buy your gins in tins from the closest shop and give it an absolute swerve. However if you want booze, they serve it

This lovely boozer was a chance find on the way out of the tube station. Great atmosphere and a happy crowd filled the period saloon bar with a pleasant buzz. Staff were lovely and the beers were well curated and cared for. Could happily while away a few hours here, the ambience is very soothing.

Calm and beautiful atmosphere with plugs to charge your phone. Comfy seating with helpful and quick service. Big portions, good quality fish for a fair price and a great drinks menu, would recommend!

I was here at lunchtime, and it was a calm and nice atmosphere. And I eat the classic fish and chips and that was really nice 👍🏼 The beer menu was okay. Overall I’m very happy with this restaurant and I can recommend a visit here.

You might be tricked into going into this place since it’s right across the street from the Farringdon station - DON’T. Anywhere would be better than here.

Spend an afternoon in here waiting to go to a gig at Betsy Trotwood. The castle was great a relaxed atmosphere really friendly staff and the TEA beer was wonderful. A great afternoon.

The Castle in Farringdon is what every London pub ought to be but rarely is. Nestled conveniently near the tube station, it’s the kind of place that should make every other pub in the city hang its head in shame and quietly consider relocating to Milton Keynes. First off, the beer is good. Not "interesting" or "complex" or any of the other nonsense that beard-stroking hipsters use to describe the muck they pretend to enjoy. No, this is just proper beer—cold, crisp, and everything you want after a day spent navigating the sheer lunacy that is London. Now, let’s talk about the clientele. This place isn’t swarming with tourists or locals who’ve been there since the Thatcher era. No, the people here are good-looking—properly good-looking. You could almost believe you’ve accidentally wandered into a GQ photo shoot, except everyone’s holding pints instead of posing with a watch they can’t afford. The location? Bang on. Farringdon tube is a stone’s throw away, so even if you’ve had a few too many, you won’t need to embark on a cross-city trek that feels like a scene out of *Lord of the Rings*. And once inside, the seating options are spot on. You can choose from cozy corners, bar stools with just the right amount of wobble, or, if you’re feeling social, a communal table that doesn’t force you into awkward conversations about the weather. In short, The Castle is just good. Really, properly good. So stop reading this, go down there, and get yourself a pint. Because this is what a London pub should be—no frills, no fuss, just fantastic.

I had such a lovely experience at The Castle. From the atmosphere to being quickly greeted, seated and served. I was served by Alex who was smiling the whole time and stayed patient as I listed out my orders and also checked up on our table to make sure things were running smoothly which I really appreciated. Such a great pub will most definitely be coming again!!

Don’t trust these folks. I have been at this pub now for a few visits, always enjoying my experience. However, tonight, I left my sunglasses on a chair near the bar. Came back less than 10 minutes later, with very few people in the bar at the time we left, and glasses are gone. Stolen, I believe, by the people that work there. They were rude tonight from the start, showed disdain for my friends when we ordered our drinks late in the evening (but well before they closed) and never showed us any respect or care even though we were courteous, and not at all intoxicated. I am furious at one lady bartender in particular and I believe she knows what happened. However, I could be wrong and willing to accept that though I fundamentally believe, that since no one was inside the pub when we left, that they took my rather expensive sunglasses. Come on guys, I would rather tip you 100 quid each rather than losing the glasses, i suspect that arrangement would have been acceptable to you. So pissed you didn’t deliver these back to me. You know better.
