Had a great stay at The Castle. Enjoyed our lunch & dinner by the log fire. Thanks to the excellent staff, Sophie, Aaren & Dave the chef. Very friendly & welcoming. Will definitely go back.

Enjoyed a meal with friends - we had to send back the sea bass as it was rather dry and staff were very helpful - returned with another which was similar so we chose an alternative dish which was delicious. Sophie in particular was very helpful and polite. All staff lovely and friendly. Will return again soon.

Fantastic food and service. Nothing was too much trouble for Millie who looked after us very well. Looking forward to another visit soon - thank you!

Lovely old building in the heart of Castleton. Excellent, friendly service from Caitlin and Lola. Food arrived really quickly and was delicious. It was the first time we've eaten here but we'll happily visit again

3 of us visited today. Pretty busy inside so waited at the door a while in case we needed to be seated by member of staff but no one came over, no sign saying wait to be seated so wandered about and found an empty table. No reserved sign etc so sat down. After a little bit a waitress came over and asked if someone had seated us there. We said no and that we had waited at the door but no one came over so found an empty table. She asked how many would be eating and we said just us 3. She then said that as that section was table service and only one staff member on that section, they saved those seats for reservations. We said that there was no reservation on the table so we thought it was ok. She said again that this section was saved for call aheads and asked us if we would sit in the other section. We were confused but agreed (even though NO signs saying anything about not sitting there/wait to be seated etc) and asked if there was free tables in the other sections, she said yes so we left the table and followed her to the bar. Upon getting to the bar, she wandered off without showing us to a table.. we looked around and the section she had told us to go to was completely full and she had disappeared so we just left..? Really weird experience.. we went across the road to the Bulls Head where we were welcomed and served without issue. Strange and disappointing.

We had a lovely meal with a variety of choices on the menu. Everything was delicious. Service was very good despite the place being very busy. Staff were friendly and helpful. The kitchen spotted that one family member, who is gluten intolerant, had inadvertently ordered a dish with gluten. She was offered a variant on the chosen meal. Well done!

I popped in here with friends for a Sunday roast to split up a Mam Tor walk. The Roast Vegetable Wellington was a satisfying meal- I especially loved the cranberry sauce filling. However, broccoli was substituted for some rather bland spring greens.

Chose the Castle on the good reviews written. So I booked a table for 2pm Sunday lunch the starter was average at best. However the main course was only tepid at best we mentioned this to 2 staff members as we couldn't eat a nearly cold Sunday roast. This completely fell on deaf ears " we'll tell the chef" no offer to warm it up or any acknowledgement whatsoever very disappointed will not be eating there again. On the plus side my dogs had a Sunday roast all it was fit for really shame.

We stayed in Castleton for a week and ate in a different pub each evening. Our meal at the Castle was without doubt a highlight of the week; I had the lamb which was perfectly cooked. The pub/restaurant was pleasantly decorated, the staff were friendly and the food exceptional. We highly recommend visiting this delightful pub.

Lovely meal, great menu choices with a good range. Friendly staff with a pleasant service style. Food came out quickly, and was delicious. Lovely setting would definitely eat here again.

We stayed here for one night (Friday 3rd May) and it was a fantastic hotel. The staff on th bar/food were brilliant. The food itself was great quality including breakfast. The hotel room was comfortable, clean, we even had a little view of the castle. Perfect location for walking and there was parking!

Great pub in the heart of a gorgeous village! Their Signature Burger is one of the best I've had, I was in the area but wasn't feeling up to sitting in the pub so nipped in to see if they would do a takeaway meal, which they did no problem! I had an ice cold Estrella while I waited, no more than 15-20 minutes and voila! got my burger to eat in my van! It was soooo good, better than I remembered, and the pickle on the side just finished it off! Great service as usual, in a busy pub on a bank holiday, I'll be back soon!

Staying at the Castle Inn for 2 x evenings at just short of £400 b&b. Had evening meal first night with my issue being something small but nevertheless it's the principal. Having desert I asked for more custard which they obliged (not enough in the first instance) but then only to find that I was charged for this of which I find astounding given the cost of the b&b stay. It's like asking for extra toast at breakfast and being charged for it. Booked meal for 2nd evening initially but now cancelled it on the back of that. Appalling customer service if you ask me. Won't be staying there again.

Standard pub fayre done well and quickly. Caitlin looked after us well, will be visiting again when we have more time available

Popped in here for lunch, OH had calamari started followed by gammon and I had the steak sandwich. Good was excellent, my sandwich came with generous portion of chips which I couldn’t finish. The steak sandwich was perfect and so tasty. Calamari was in a delicious light batter, gammon was tasty. Pale ale hit the spot. Service was great.

A group of 14 had dinner here on a busy Saturday night. The service was excellent from not only the friendly bar staff but also the restaurant staff (i believe we were served by Hannah and Alex throughout). The food was a very good standard, although the calamari starter i had was a little bland, the steak main was fantastic. A very welcoming pub which i will go back to if this way again.

What a fab pub lunch! We only ordered a handful of starters & that was the best choice to make. Starters were so delicious, ranging from Calamari, honey hot camambert, beetroot & pumpkin seed arancing,

We’ve just stayed here for a couple nights and really enjoyed it. We received a very warm welcome from Katy and had great service throughout our stay. We ate in both nights and enjoyed our meals, a good selection of hot choices at breakfast too. Room was clean and comfortable. Lovely village and some fantastic walking from the door.

One of the worst meals I have had from a pub the prawn cocktail it looked like raw prawns with a smidgen of seafood sauce on it As for the pie of the day that looked gigantic until you popped the puff pastry on the top would definitely not recommend very over priced

Beautiful food, with lots of choice on the menu. A lovely cosy welcoming historic pub in a very pretty little village. Dog friendly too, if we visit again we shall definitely return 😊

A last-minute change of location had myself & my 3 sisters booking lunch at The Castle and what a treat it was. The setting was beautiful with the roaring fire, stone flag flooring, Christmas decoration adoring the whole pub, for someone returning to England from Australia it was very special. Okay now for the food, it was outstandingly good, we settled for a 2-course lunch menu, a great variety of choices as 2 sisters are vegetarian. The food was tasty, presented well, good portion size and it's a place that I will return.

Lovely warm welcome in a fantastic cosy pub. Bar area is really nice with plenty of seating and open fires. We also ate a fabulous meal in the restaurant. All the staff were lovely. Really great ambiance to the place. Will definitely be back.

Just got back from a two night stay and can highly recommend, we were in room 4 which was very comfortable with a beautiful shower room. Fantastic breakfast and evening meals and all the staff were amazing ( and a huge thanks to Emma ) we will definitely stay again.

Castleton is one of my favourite places I vist regularly 2/3 times a year. I don't live far so this is only the second time I have stayed the night. I Previously stayed in the YHA. (I wish I did again!) As it was the Christmas/NYE period I wanted to stay somewhere I thought would be a little more comfortable/less basic/more uppermarket (I dont know what eles to discribe it as haha) & in a room we could enjoy if the weather was pretty bad. So I booked the castle which looked decent online. Positives about the castle was the great location very convinant for exploring Castleton & less than 5mins away from the main carpark. The staff we booked in with was polite & welcoming. The first negative was that we couldn't park at the hotel the small carpark was full long before check in and for the whole stay I think it would be a good idea to give your number plate or something eles & the parking only be for guests staying in the hotel but it wasn't a big deal we stayed in the castleton main carpark and just took the extra costs & got a little wet bringing our bags etc back and forth. The thing that was the main negative and ruined our trip was the room itself. We stayed in room 10 across from the pub not in the main building. It was a very large room compared to normal hotels so that was a positive. But sadly ended there it was a cold wet miserable day so after walking we wanted to relax in our room a couple of hours before going back out in the eve for food. Sadly there was no arm chairs or somewhere comfy to sit and relax which is usually standard in any room and this one was so big and empty of furniture so we couldn't both sit and have a coffee without being on the bed. When we tried to put on the TV it wouldn't work saying cables need plugging in? we tried to cast to it and many things instead but that also didn't work. The room was dirty and run down not relaxing at all! We paid £160 (no breakfast) for 2 people one night & feel it was very overpriced. There was cobwebs all over, the carpet had ugly looking stains the paint chipped & clearly there was damp problems. The bathroom had a huge corner bath which seemed inviting but the shower curtain was discusting there was just one bottle screwed to the wall for shampoo/conditioner/soap in one which had a thick layer of scum from all the other users. When we came back to the room at night the bed was clean and comfy & was looking forward to a good night's sleep ready for a busy day. Sadly however it took a long time to get to sleep as the roof was very creaky and loud from the guests upstairs and old floorboards we could also hear them talking and wasn't very sound proof at all. The worst part of everything is after a night's sleep in the morning we both woke feeling rough with dry throats and coughs. I have mine still and feel very ill now I am home I have allergies and I am convinced the damp room likely had mould spores which has triggered me and made me quite ill 🤒 I then looked on trip advisor at other people's stays and saw photos from a guest a couple of weeks before and the bathroom was covered in mould so I am likely right and they just covered it with a lick of paint? I couldn't be certain so don't take my word for it! But I would not stay here again regardless I feel ripped off with the price & upset we had this experience instead of a much needed relaxing trip we hoped for 😭💔

Visited for lunch on Christmas Day. It was a lovely experience. We were greeted warmly with a bucks fizz and handwritten Christmas card to the family. There was no particular wait for each course and the food was ample and tasty, particularly the snow ball cheese cake. Given the number of people that were dining there that day, the venue did an excellent and very professional job. We went home feeling relaxed and stress free!

Stayed at The Castle December 23rd as we were going to the Carols in the Cavern in Castleton which was a very enjoyable evening. Very nice room no.2 which was great size with good bathroom. We were there with two friends and we had an early evening meal in the restaurant which we all thoroughly enjoyed - good food and drink reasonably priced. Had breakfast the next morning- brilliant full English. Would definitely stay again.

Very average experience. Obviously chronicly under staffed. Waited 15 minutes to be served at an almost empty bar. The food was overpriced and overcooked. Won't be eating there again.

Lovely stay in one of my favourite places it has excellent views and is a pretty location to visit/ stay ,extra special at christmas time the chrstmas lights.stayed for one night with a friend. Spent two nights at The Castle and found the staff very friendly and accommodating. The room was large, clean, warm and there was an excellent shower with plenty of hot water. There were tea/coffee making facilities in the room which was serviced daily. Decent towels...

Went here last night 13 th april to celebrate a friends retirement, nice atmosphere and pleasant staff , the meal was superb for all of us and the fish and chips was the best, well done all , pity the doom bar was off but that’s life ,!Cheers folks ,,,,,,,,,,,

The room was a reasonable price and was lovely. Really good bathroom facilities and a comfortable room. The staff were extremely accommodating and friendly and made recommendations for our stay. The only negative would be the noise in the room. With it being on the front of the pub the road was very noisy and it did make it hard to sleep. Overall would recommend but if possible request a room at the back of the building.

A lovely pub, clean, good settings with a nice vibe. Staff and service great, prices good with a smashing beer garden. We ate and food was good only negative was the chips! Was really excited about the “triple cooked chips” but what we got were clearly oven chips. I queried this and got told that the chat said that they were?I just really wanted triple cooked chips!!

Not as expected after visiting previously and reading good reviews. Our food was over cooked and took ages to arrive. The bar staff were good but when I complained about the food we were told that's how it always is, in fairness they did offer to do something else but we had already waiting 45 minutes so just ate it. The staff tried their best to rectify the poor food and we had one drink and one pudding instead of a refund but that's not the point, we just wanted a nice meal. Very disappointed with the experience.

We have visited the Castle for food and drinks on a few occasions, each time having a very nice meal. However on Saturday night the 26th Feb 2022 for my Birthday we had planned a small family meal, eventually the waitress came over to ask for our order with the exception of most of the menus as they had sold out. We had instead had below average pub grub, undercooked chips and very poorly presented burger and chips. Our starters came missing ingredients and they forgot to bring drinks which they blamed on a fill role problem, a bottle of Prosecco arrived and we were asked to leave it a while as it’s warm. I had a pint of a Ruby Porter which I love, but could drink it as it tasted awful. I really hope they start to get the place back into shape as we normally love it here. But right now it’s terrible, the service the food and the drink.

What an amazing establishment...! From the minute we walked in to the minute left we were treated with kindness. The rooms are very comfortable and spotlessly clean! Staff are super friendly and nothing is too much trouble! Even the cleaning staff go out of their way yo make you feel welcome. Highly recommended.We will be back in the very near future.

Polite service, seated with a menu and very prompt. Was ruined as my food wasn’t very hot then the table behind was seated with very wet dogs due to the weather. I had to move my coat from my chair as it wouldn’t have smelt very pleasant as one of the not so small dogs was walking back and forth near it. I think it’s great they welcome pets but when you haven’t got one it’s not nice to be seated next to somebody with 3. I wish I’d not ordered a sweet because the smell wasn’t very pleasant and ruined the meal.

Popped in without a reservation to escape the rain following a walk. The staff here were really welcoming and friendly. Dogs are welcome inside and we had a table for 2. We had fish and chips and a couple of drinks. Great service and well cooked food. Thank you very much

We stayed for 1 night with our 10 week old baby, the staff were really accommodating & helpful. The room was beautiful & surpassed our expectations with plenty of room & stunning views. We dined in the evening & had a lovely meal & wine. Would highly recommend & we will return!

We were a party of eight. We were staying for one night. Arrived at lunchtime on Saturday found a lovely table in the lounge by the fire. We had dinner in the evening. We loved the cosy atmosphere of the whole place. The rooms were very nice, comfortable beds, everything was perfect. We came here for our 10 years anniversary when we were exploring the Hope Valley area. Really lovely place and great service! Food was delicious and we'll priced! Only issue was even with the limited menu; both dishes my fiance picked weren't available which was a real shame. But we still has a lovely time and would recommend it to anyone looking for a nice dinner!

Really enjoyed our stay at the Castle. The rooms were very nicely decorated and where we were - in the garden - it was quiet and secluded.The staff were friendly and helpful and the service in the restaurant was good. The menu was limited due to staff shortages but as there is so much Covid around at the moment I still think they did really well in the circumstances.I would definitely visit again.

My wife, mother-in-law and I called in here before going out for a pre-booked meal elsewhere. The wine selection was spot on, the beer was top notch and with a great choice and the atmosphere was warm, friendly and comfortable. The guys running the bar are cracking and are lovely to chat to. Times are tough at the minute, but you’re doing well - keep it up guys!

We called on a busy Saturday (5 couples with two dogs) for a table for lunch and drinks with no booking. They managed to find us a table and even though we had to wait eventually managed to get food as well. The food was delicious especially the gammon and beef with mash. They were obviously understaffed like many places at the moment but every member of staff had a smile and were genuinely welcoming. Loved the young guy behind the bar lots of personality. The bar and seating areas are well presented, also decorated for Christmas beautiful. We loved the mulled cider/wine. Would highly recommend for lunch/ drinks or to stay - a real gem with staff that are an asset to the place.

Visited for lunch with friends ,we felt the food and menu was poor and and expensive for what we had ,did not enjoy the lunch some items on the menu was not available, not good menu for lunch time, would not return ,need to up the standard of food and price very disappointed.

Fabulous 3 night stay here. Everyone is so lovely and friendly. Room was absolutely gorgeous we loved the decor. Also felt really fresh and clean. The location is perfect as it is central to everything. The pub has a warm, cosy ambience and roast dinners were lovely. Will definitely be back had a totally relaxing time.

I have passed this place every time I have come here (this is my 4th) and never been in so my husband booked our sunday lunch, for after our speedwell cavern trip. It is lovely inside. Lots to look at. We both had the roast which was nice though I do agree with another review that red peppers seem odd on a roast dinner! Quite expensive for amount but I suppose its expected in a tourist area. The desert was nice too...Baked cheesecake and blackcurrants. The staff were very nice.

Called here after walking mam tor and was unfortunately very disappointed. When we came to ordering our meals half of the items we ordered had “run out” which would have been helpful to know before we had bought drinks. We ordered two roast beef dinners and two burgers. When the burgers arrived my partner had to ask where the onion rings were which were supposed to be a side on the meal - they at this point told us they had run out of these as well, he then had to ask if they could be replaced by more chips for the inconvenience - the burgers were very plain not restaurant standard in my opinion. The beef dinners were both very dry to the point were it was even difficult to cut through the roast potatoes as they were “chewy”. I think the food was very over priced for what we got and I’m not sure if this was because we came later on in the day however this is no excuse for a restaurant. I told the waitress that I was not happy with the food, I cannot fault the waitress she was very lovely and offered us deserts on the house which were lovely, we had chocolate brownie and cheesecake - although they had also run out of cream for the cheesecake! Would be reluctant to return unfortunately however the gesture of free deserts was much appreciated, will try elsewhere on our next visit.

Al fresco decision to stop at Castleton and the Castle Hotel, walked in, very attentive service food and drinks delivered up in appropriate time, very enjoyable food, only reason why not a 5 star rating was that the non-meat Sunday Roast was just a Sunday Roast with no meat, previously (so i understand) there was a "nut roast" or similar offering, veggie options such as Veggie Wellington are not difficult and I think this was my only disappointment, will return, hopefully with a new Veggie Option on Sundays

Called in for an afternoon drink after a long walk across Mam Tor - Lose Hill. Lovely beer garden and very chatty, polite staff. We returned for an evening meal which was excellent all round, well priced and well presented. The service was also first class as again were the staff. Would have no hesitation in saying that having visited all the pubs in Castleton this perhaps was the best.

Popped in for drinks after a long day of walking. There is a large beer garden with lots of tables. We were told we had to order via the app as there were a lot of us & we wanted to pay separately. Some of us had difficulty downloading the app due to poor phone signal but it wasn’t a problem to order with the bar staff. Lovely friendly pub with efficient service. Nice place to relax with lovely views of Castleton & Peveril Castle.

Called here for a meal Thursday lunch time. My partner had Hunters Schnitzel Chicken which was dry, over cooked with no pancetta, 10 chips & was charged £13.50, a pint of landlord which can only be described as cloudy dish water £4.05. I had the 8oz gammon which was very salty & covered in chargrilled black bits, 2 small fried eggs covered in pepper (hate raw black pepper) wasnt even asked if I wanted them covering in it (must be a cheff thing) & 12 chips, was charged £11.50. I asked if it has a salad garnish to which I wad told no, so I asked for a side salad. I even had to pay for peas 50p. My side salad consisted of lots of chopped up gem lettuce 2 cherry tomatoes cut in half, 1 thin onion ring sliced up all squashed into a small ramekin for which I was charged £2.50 . WONT BE EATING HERE AGAIN. Don't waste your money. Go to the George topside for much better value for money. 5☆ for the waitress...she was lovely .
