The rooms are lovely, the location is brilliant and everything was exactly what we were after. The only disappointment was the breakfast experience. The fact that the breakfast was not a sit down but a take away, the only hot option was a reheated prepacked sausage or bacon cob. In effect the breakfast is a take out cafe that you get 1 item of food and a drink. Therefore we went elsewhere for breakfast.

Great stay at the Bulls Head. Rooms were great. Bed was great size and very comfy. Nice little touches in the room when you arrive. We were leaving early next morning so they provided us with breakfast the night before which was great. Would highly recommend a stay here and would stay again when in the area.

Called in after a long hike over the ridges hungry…. Had the chicken Caesar salad in the sun on a random September afternoon. It was DELICIOUS. After this we decided to go for an early pub tea… the fish and chips with their own beer batter was excellent. Good wine selection. Speaking to the friendly and engaging staff, there had been an upgrade. Usually stay away from Robinsons pubs, but this exceeded expectations.

Everything was excellent, reception, room, service, location. One tiny exception there was no Gluten free alternatives for breakfast, but we were able to go over the road and enjoy GF breakfast and get refund. Perhaps a selection in the annex would be good. Apart from that minor point everything was excellent.

The staff were helpful and friendly enough. We had a starter to share of nachos with chicken, which was okay. My partner had the steak and ale pie with veg and I had the chilli con carne. My partner’s food was close to inedible, steak in the pie was chewy, the broccoli was almost impossible to cut through it was so hard. The parsnips were burnt and the chips were cold. My chilli tasted like yesterday’s reheated in a microwave. Within 20 mins of leaving to drive home I was experiencing sore stomach and my partner was starting to feel nauseous. By the time we arrived home an hour later my partner was experiencing sickness and diarrhea and ended up in bed for the rest of the night. My stomach was painful and unsettled for most of the night too. I couldn’t contemplate ever visiting this restaurant again.

Called in initially for a pint after a walk in the local area and then decided to eat here after all. Food was a little disappointing. Seemed like everything apart from the battered fish came directly from the freezer. Wasn’t particularly hot either. The chilli beef on chips was absolutely swimming in sweet chilli sauce, I think a pot on the side for dipping would have been much better. The selection of drinks from the bar was reasonable. Unfortunately the staff serving behind the bar didn’t appear to be very friendly and certainly didn’t want to smile. I would have understood slightly had the pub and beer garden been busy but it wasn’t. I asked for a glass for my bottled drink and plenty of ice but it appears Ice was being rationed. The inside for dining is very pretty in the restaurant area. The beer garden is located alongside the car park but it is good for catching some sunshine.

There is nothing more unwelcoming than a member of staff looking at you and then looking at their watch as soon as you walk in. Then when having your drink have them walk past and eyeball you. Worst of all I’m presuming this was the manager with grey in his hair, chequered shirt and shorts. If you don’t want customers in the pub for the last hour of trade I suggest changing your opening hours to closing at 9pm. We got a much warmer welcome elsewhere in Castleton and will be avoiding in future visits

Food was pretty good, but we had to return to the bar *three* times to ask for things that were left off dishes. The loaded fries came with no salt and vinegar scraps, the toast and pate came without chutney and the chicken caesar salad had rather dry chicken and not enough dressing to make it palatable. Each time we had to go back to the (crowded) bar and wait to get someone's attention, the food got a little colder. The place itself is lovely. Sitting outside, the views are stunning and on a hot day, it's lovely. With the money they are making, surely they can afford to hire someone to expedite the food and make sure that the (very simple) dishes go out as advertised. To be fair, everything was fixed when we eventually found people to help, but these are simple mistakes on food that's not complicated to put together.

Sis and I were on a road trip from a much flatter part of the country and had been enjoying a wonderful trip over the ups and downs into Castleton. As we were pulling into the ample and well laid out car park at the rear of the venue a spectacular downpour started. We decided to wait it out in the car while enjoying the Bakewell tart we had resently purchased in Bakewell. Rain subsided and we ventured towards the front door, remarking the view of the castle ruins above us - which had appeared out of the rainy splodge we could see through the windscreen while we sat waiting. At the bar we were greeted by a very friendly host. Lots of people appeared to be enjoying themselves at the tables around us. Some with food and drink, most with dogs. It was a nice and cozy atmosphere. We got checked in and the host explained the breakfast menu and showed us up some stairs to our room. The stairs and halls were clean and tidy - recently refurbished as we understand - and they even had shoe-bags to use for any potentially muddy hiking boots. The room was a nice size and had a, erm, fun decor. Very busy flower patterns on the walls and lamps - but it worked and the feel of the room was nice. The host explained how the heating worked and any other things we would need to know and left us to settle in. The bathroom facilities were also in very good and very possibly brand new condition. Water pressure and temperature excellent! We selected our breakfast items as instructed and ventured out to explore a bit. We enjoyed beautiful views over the fells, babbling brooks, idyllic lanes and alleys and wonderful old cottages. Unfortunately it was late in the afternoon and both the castle and the cave were “closed”. It didn’t matter - a good time was certainly had! Upon our return to The Bull’s Head we tidied ourselves up and ventured down for some grub. Sadly, none was available due to circumstances which probably greatly annoyed the staff. Only “improve for next time”-comment we would make would be to communicate this to guests. We were passed by staff at least five times at our table - unable to make eye contact - and no one said anything. So we asked ;-) No matter - because the 1530, an Italian restaurant, was basically next door. After dinner we turned in and both enjoyed sleeping on comfortable mattresses with soft duvets. There were even extra blankets available for warmth and comfort. Zzz. All in all, The Bull’s Head in Castleton saw us off to a great start on our little road trip and we would definitely stay again! Ps: we did get a call after we left, presumably from the host who had greeted us on arrival, to apologise for not being able to serve us dinner. This was very kind and not at all necessary - it’s all good!

We always go here for lunch the Saturday before Xmas as its always been lovely. Have to say we were disappointed this time.. the pub was cosy and fires were lit but there was no festive menu as in previous years, no xmas music or anything different from visiting at any other time of year.. as it was the day before xmas eve it was all rather flat...

It was a nice and quiet place to get some good food and drinks after a long hike.

The burger tasted like it was off a greasy food van, in a white bread roll not even a burger bun with one rasher of bacon. 2 tiny onion rings and a handful of sub-par chips for £14. Absolute rip off.

We've been to Pico Lounge several times now after moving to Glossop and the service is always excellent. They staff are super friendly and attentive and are always so lovely with our Dog. She just loves going, especially as there is a whole section of treats just for Dogs! The food for humans is also excellent too! Great variety, in fact when we took my sister-in-law who is a celiac, she was blown away by the size of the gluten-free menu. Can't fault the place!

Decided to try out The Norfolk Arms whilst staying in the area and googling dog friendly venues - we definitely were not disappointed! Lovely friendly staff, very dog friendly and really good food at a decent price, what’s it to love?

It shut down early July 2024 without warning. Recent management/staffing was very dubious.

Had a great stay at The Castle. Enjoyed our lunch & dinner by the log fire. Thanks to the excellent staff, Sophie, Aaren & Dave the chef. Very friendly & welcoming. Will definitely go back.

We had room 7 for a night, it’s a little apartment, which is lovely and perfectly positioned. For those looking for en-suite facilities the loo is the other end of the apartment. More lighting is required at the back (before the gate) The bedroom is a lovely size and plenty blankets etc for extra warmth just felt a bigger bed would be nice as the room can take it. Guessing it’s small / standard double.
