Had a birthday celebration here for 8 and really enjoyed it. Food was lovely, not over priced and service was great. My only negative comment would be that some of the food was served with paper under the food which became soggy and was hard to separate from the wet food. Suggest removing before you start .

A surprisingly (in a good way) meal! Really good quality food, great portion size and a really good price as well, meal for two with drinks and desert for under 50 quid. Definitely has more of a pub then a restaurant feel so there wasnt really any table service. But it was still a pleasant atmosphere, would definitely eat here again

Return visit after a couple of years. The food has gone down hill significantly. We had a burger and it was clearly a very cheap burger. It took just over 3 hours for us to get our starter and main. The worst part is the place is absolutely filthy. We ate in the restaurant and the stairway up should have warned us as to what was to come. Our table was filthy, sticky, covered in food and hairs. The bar upstairs is filthy and covered in all kinds. I would dread seeing what the kitchen looked like!

Sat upstairs in the restaurant for dinner. The whole place was pretty dirty and needed a very good clean. Carpet, tables, and in some instances plates and glasses were dirty. Reviews had said the burgers were good, but it wasn’t. It was a store bought cheap burger. Very processed and not much flavour. The music from the downstairs bar was VERY loud. You could feel the whole restaurant vibrating from the noise. Combined with the cleanliness did not create a nice atmosphere. There were no other people upstairs on a Saturday night, so I assume they’ve let the restaurant go and just focus on cheap pub food for the downstairs bar.

Have been coming to the Carriage house for Sunday lunch once a month since it opened. I cannot believe that such a good restaurant does not cater for celiacs requiring a gluten free option. The prawn cocktail wax the only starter option for me today and they did not have any bread to go with it. Considering we had to wait a good half an hour for our starters I am not sure why one of the many young girls that seem to be not doing too much at all couldn’t have nipped over to the co op for some gluten free rolls or bread ? The roast wax fantastic as always but when it came to dessert there wasn’t one gluten free option on the menu. I asked if they had any gluten free options and was informed I could have raspberry sorbet. Come on the Carriage get up to date and start stepping up to the mark.

Visited for Mother’s Day. 6 adults and 2 children. Two courses £25. Three for £30. Child’s course £12.50. Portions were all good. Beef perfectly cooked. Vegetables come as dishes in table centre. Lots of lovely roast potatoes. Broccoli was a little crunchy. Carrots delicious. Staff were attentive and polite. All three mothers got a mini bottle of Prosecco for free. Nice idea. We were in the side room which was freezing on entry. A heater was then provided and all was fine. Decent selection of drinks. Perhaps more soft drinks needed for children. Our bill took three goes to get right. Started £90 too much so check your bill before paying. The Sunday lunch is good quality and three courses for £30 is very fair. The desserts are all very nice. New York cheesecake was enough for two! Would happily return.

Drinks and atmosphere are great however was a function on and service was slower than usual. Food was not as usually expected and about an hour wait. Ross one of the staff was amazing and refunded the meal and awarded some drinks for the inconvenience. Usually food and drinks are top notch in higham but service and food suffered this night but the staff turned it around with the after service and rectified any issues we had. If you reading this and wondering whether to eat ect here. You will not be disappointed. The staff are great and make the pub. Will see us back again👍

Cold! That was what first drew our attention as we entered. I’d booked in advance, ive always liked the look of this place and online the menu seemed ok for our requirements, my partner is a vegetarian and I eat fish. We stood at the bar thought we’d have a drink first as we were early but no staff to be seen, we did read tho that it was ‘a pizza and a pint night’ seemed doable….still no staff so we made our way upto the restaurant…Cold!..greeted by a friendly young girl and seated. Cold!..the menu on the table was not the one we’d seen online just a paper print out and no pizza and pint either that was bar only. Choice was poor veggie one choice Mediterranean tart (boring) and fish and chips for me. ..we decided to leave. This is becoming a regular thing, cold premises, poor expensive food choices and out dated websites. Get your act together, that is a beautiful building, with fresh paint, warm lighting and a clever menu full of clean fresh food you would have a niche market. Higham is up and coming, keep up!

Ruined Christmas dinner :( my husband & I were unfortunate enough to have pre booked our Christmas dinner at the Carriage House yesterday. We have eaten here 3 times before & its always been good, so I was looking foward to being treated. I did find it odd they only had 3 serving staff to a full restaurant, they usually have 2 when its much less busy. I first ordered a bottle of bubbles which was dropped in its cooler on our table with a glass...so I opened it myself. We had a later sitting and when the main course veg came out we were very disappointed. Burnt sprouts, charred pigs in blankets, rock solid roast potatoes oozing fat & looked like they had been under hot lights for the day. The chef did agree it wasn't up to scratch & gave us a 50% discount off the bill, but you only get one Christmas day a year & to get this inedible board of veg was was very disappointing. The meat was okay, but that doesn't make Christmas dinner sadly.

Good afternoon, I just wanted to message you about our food we had last night in your restaurant. The table of 12 people we had to ask for another table to be put on the end as we was sat to close together. Also the food was a total let down The mash potatoes with hollandaise sauce with the salmon looked like mash potatoes like smash that’s made with water. We asked for the pate to be done as a main course which you provided four slices of toasted bread with pate that was warm and to make it a main meal you just duplicated the four pieces of bread and warm pate, we did ask for a salad but the waitress said this could not be done. The fish and chips was not worth the amount paid as the portion of chips was a very small portion of about 20 chips which is a disgrace. I really think you need to sort out your catering and prices as it was a total let down, I don’t normally complain but this made me feeling so disappointed

Well where do I begin on this.....the start seems appropriate. We booked for a 90th birthday Sunday lunch well in advance for my mum's birthday - a table of 10 plus our grandaughter who required a highchair. We got menus out to guests early so we could do a prebooked order to assist the kitchen. 2 of the guests are lactose intolerant one being our 14mth grandaughter the other an elderly woman. My husband and I took the preorders up well over a week before the booked lunch and sat down with Josh the Manager to discuss the dietrary requirements and he wrote everything down infront of us. Thanked us for being organised etc. We also chose here because there is a lift - as alot of the guests were elderly and the restaurant is up 2 flights of stairs - all good!!!! So the birthday is all set. Arrrggghhhhhh We arrived on said day 19th November - we booked for 12noon. No lift available!!!!! Apparently there was a big party upstairs the night before and kids were running amuck with lift - ahhhh what were the staff/parents doing about this. We were not contacted about this big problem - so it was left to us to help get some of the women upstairs (no assistance or apology offered) On going upstairs not only was no highchair set up there was one placing missing - so we sorted that. I guess alarm bells should have gone off when we were presented with the menus!!!! Remember we had PREORDERED over a week ago with the Manager. I explained this and yes sorry - we then asked if we could possibly get our grandaughters meal first as she was getting a bit grumpy...it arrived 20mins later with a YORKSHIRE Pudding on her plate...REMEMBER LACTOSE INTOLERANCE!!! We talked this out a week or so earlier. OK - so 50mins after arriving and having to ask way too many times where the starters were - they arrived for those who had PREORDERED - and low and behold the soup was given to the 2nd LACTOSE INTOLERANT woman with bread and cheese floating on the top!!!!!!!! OK breathe I am thinking!! rectifyed - so let's remember 12noon booking - major stuff ups thus far! Our son, wife and grandaughter had to leave by this stage as wee one was over tired. At 1.30pm mains nowhere in sight....PREORDERED OVER A WEEK AGO! But other tables that came in way after us were eating theirs!!! We all decided enough was enough and walked. Chef shouted at us as we were leaving "I guess you are taking that free bottle of wine with you" arrrrggghhh you bet - we didn't pay for any drinks, stuffed up starters either....then when I said about the lack of lift or being contacted about the lack of he said "can you hurry up getting down the stairs, I have others wanting to come up" - I then said well if the lift was working?? He came back....ready for this people.........saying "the lift is working".....swear to god I could have gone for him. In summary we had a miserable time - mum's 90th birthday was a complete disaster!!! We will also be contacting Council regarding your total lack of regard to dietary requirements.

Had a table booked recently and was looking forward to a lovely meal as we had been before. Unfortunately it was ruined by a party taking place downstairs. The music was too loud and the pub staff refused to lower or contain the music, we did feel sorry for the staff having to work in that environment. We had our starter which was delicious but could not stay to eat the main course. The restaurant staff were brilliant and arraigned to put our food into containers so we could take our food somewhere quieter to eat. The food was just as nice, shame we couldn't enjoy it in the environment we were supposed to be in. The restaurant staff tried all they could and we were not the only party you complain of the noise. Despite our change in location, the food was just as nice and we did enjoy it.

Must admit The Carriage House was a third choice venue tonight. We'd tried The Queen's Head over the road for a brief drink but they had a pub quiz on, so decided to give this pub / restaurant another go for the Dad & Son Tuesday beer night. As I don't.drink & drive these days, I always go for the low alcohol offerings which are gradually getting better. In the tiny front bar three ladies had a knitting circle going, so we left them to it and walked through to the large back bar.... Yes! The one with all those large TV screens! As before, we struggled to have a chat without eyeing the TV. It's a conversation killer! So, beer OK.....choice was pretty good. Son had Camden Pale but I stuck with an alcohol free beer, Erdinger. Not many in but still noisy. Bit of a barn of a place that time of night with so few in. Didn't eat but had a quick look at the menu, which looks OK. Left fairly promptly. Ladies in the knitting circle had gone by then and we probably should have stopped in there anyway, if there was service. Still only 3-stars for me.

Sunday Roast: Starts: scotch egg- delicious! Mains. In my opinion a lot of it needed a bit longer in the oven; this coming from someone who loves their meat rare. My lamb was cold, a huge chunk of it was inedible bone/fat and there weren’t enough vegetables for our table (we noticed a table with half as many guests got the same offering of vegetables. Very odd). We had to ask specifically for a toddler portion; which they charged us £10 for. Good roast tatties were good and so was the cabbage. Overall though disappointing. Dessert:This was wonderful (sticky toffee pudding for me and bread and butter pudding for hubby). The bill: well it took 1hour from asking for the bill to being able to leave! There was a complete muck up; with the wrong number of meals, mix up with drinks, all sorts. The young waitresses were clearly trying their best but didn’t know how to sort it out. Everyone is so friendly and clearly wanted to do a good job; just disorganised. There seemed to be no system (we were bought another tables drinks twice). Like a good show, the finale makes it breaks a performance, and this was clearly under-rehearsed!

I sent a message, via their website, to book a table in their bar, a few weeks before our booking date. We had seen their advert in a booklet, posted through the door, advertising bar food, buy one meal get one free on a Thursday evening. The booking was confirmed by The Carriage House. On the evening we arrived and approached the bar. The serving staff ignored me until I asked the barman for assistance. I explained we had a table for 4 booked in the bar, he advised me our table was upstairs, we assumed this was down to it being quite busy downstairs with another function. Upstairs was empty and after confirming our booking with the waitress we were advised we could sit anywhere. The waitress then brought over the restaurant menus, 3 courses for a set price. We explained our booking was for the bar menu, she looked surprised and went off to check with the manager. She returned to advise they weren't serving bar food that evening. At this point we advised how disappointed we were and left. Very poor communication by the establishment completely spoilt our evening. Take away it was in the end from down the road.

We had a family dinner for 14 in the restaurant. To save time - Sal suggested we pre-order, which we did. A slight hiccup with the electricity delayed things but we were given drinks whilst we waited. The food was good and hot and well served. Everyone enjoyed their meals. It was our first visit - won’t be our last!

We visited as a table of 6 Thursday evening for their £20 for 3 course offerings. The restaurant is very comfortable and the staff very attentive 👍. The choice of food from the menu is very good. I chose a Scotch egg as a starter and a Mediterranean vegetable tart for a main, the starters are huge the mains are of a generous size, all the food is all freshly cooked, tastes great and was enjoyed by all. Apologies I couldn’t manage a desert, however there is a good selection from the menu. Thanks to the staff at the Carriage House, smashed it. Looking forward to our next visit.

Booked a table for 3 people on Saturday 18th June. Bar area was good, clean and bright. Staff friendly. Went up to restaurant at booked time ( only about 6 others at another table. Waited around 30/35 minutes for starter (had only ordered 1). About 50/60 minutes after, out mains arrived!! Hubby had fillet steak and chips, ordered med to well done, steak was oozing blood it was so rare!! Chips look so dark and greasy must have been dregs of fryer from the day. Waitress took steak to be re cooked and said that was last portion of chips (not surprisingly). Steak came back still quite rare so not eaten. Did take price of that meal off bill but damage done then , evening spoilt. I had sea bass which was ok. Other meal was the cheese and chive waffle with burnt mushrooms and spinach on top and a hard poached egg. Very disappointed overall with restaurant Would not recommend

First visit to this restaurant and I'll definitely be coming back. Firstly, things to be aware of: it has a car park but only for 3 cars and really tight, but plenty of parking in the square opposite. Restaurant is on the first floor so don't be put off by the busy (and sometimes loud) pub below. For those less able, there is a small lift. This is a very good restaurant and well worth a visit if you are in the area. Between us we had the whitebait, scotch egg and baked camembert starters, and the cow pie, shepherd's pie, pork tenderloin and sea bass - all excellent. The shepherd's pie came with lamb steaks and 2 cutlets, and portions were a decent size. Not a massive choice of wine but something for everyone. Wide choice of gins. 5 stars all the way.

Visited for a wake, plenty of space for us all, but the food was out of this world!! I have never seen a spread like it!! Will definitely consider The Carriage House for any future functions.

The Menu was well balanced , the two starters we had were excellent , we had the Paté and toast and the Scotch egg on a cassoulet of mixed beans , my partner had the Gammon and chips with a crunchy poached egg , she thought it was really nice , on the other hand I had the big Jack burger , which I wasn't too impressed with , the burgers were tough and the brioche bun just wasn't up to it , the bottom half was thin and hence became soggy , my partner had the apple topped waffle with chocolate sauce and Vanilla ice cream , the apples were undercooked and still had the skin on , the service was excellent , very attentive , polite and on point , they have a good wine list and the draught beer and cider are second to none , all in all it was a nice meal and we will go there again .

Visited here on a Friday night and we were the only table all night. Food was lovely and service from the staff was great, both in the restaurant upstairs and the bar downstairs. Good menu and perfect portion sizes. I had the Cow Pie and my friend had the Chicken Kiev, both served with creamed potatoes and vegetables. Dessert options were good too. Our waitress suggested coming back on a Sunday for their Roast Dinners which we will certainly be booking for in future. Highly recommend.

A must for foodies! All freshly cooked, piping hot and cooked to literal perfection. Service was amazing, attentive and friendly ladies looking after us. Highly recommend the scotch eggs and the halloumi fries, compliments to the chef. Huge selection of gins too. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area, or even if you are prepared to travel. Will be back for a cheeky Sunday lunch!

First visit since the restaurant reopened. The menu is pretty much as I remembered but with understandably some price increases. Saturday night, not very busy at all. Whitebait was nice but portion size was small - good job you get some focaccia and dips with...

What an amazing local village pub. Zoe, the landlady was so attentive and nothing was too much trouble. She made my wife and my visit extremely enjoyable. To top it off England won the football and the atmosphere was absolutely electric. The many large screens meant you could see every moment of the game too. Totally recommend this venue for everyone.

Had a lovely meal there with my wife and son. Rob was very welcoming, and even arranged for the chef to whip up a vegetarian wellington for me which wasn't on the menu. Tasted great, and then I was stressed to an extra portion of garlic and herb toasties, which were also great. A jazz band were setting up which we couldn't stay for, but I'm sure it turned into a great evening. We'll definitely visit again. Food was great and staff were very attentive.

We have been to this cafe a good number of times and i couldn’t recommend enough for the majority or the times we have been. However, we went this morning and the lady who was serving us (we have never seen her before) was very rude. My partner ordered a coffee and she brought over the wrong coffee, he politely asked if this could be fixed and she told him he was wrong and didn’t know about coffee (he is a fully trained barista) and then just rudely said ‘so what do u want instead then?’ all the other staff members we have met are very polite and friendly except the one we were greeted by today.
