I’ve eaten the Sunday roast sometime ago and it was good . Decided late to go out for Sunday dinner so called in here . So pleased with the dinner I wanted to encourage others . We had scotch egg to start , runny yolk , perfect and tasty, as was gbd five spice pork dumplings , 🤩 to start. Then cans probably the best roast beef dinner ,well thought out , well presented , can not fault it , the wedge of beef beautifully pink , perfect 👌we finished with desserts , sticky toffee 👌 white chocolate Nutella cheesecake with a fantastic chocolate ice cream. So , get yer send here , it is Michelin star quality , and I eat regular at Michelin stars 👍👌😇. Well done team Carnelly Hellaby ..

Visited multiple times over a few nights stay in the adjoining hotel. The manager is quite new here however very polite, professional and welcoming. Unfortunately some of the other staff do not have the same ethos. Generally young waiters and waitresses, I presume relatively inexperienced from what I saw with inability to work the till and general interaction with customers. Some were quite rude to some customers, some rarely smiled, others did make the effort to have interaction and were more professional, but in the main the staff did not make for a welcoming experience. If the restaurant has more than a few tables booked, they are unable to cope with demand, often I waited for we’ll over an hour for a simple sandwich. When the food came however it was generally well presented, hot and tasted nice. Drinks are expensive it must be said. The decor was okay although the constant flickering of the lights got a bit annoying, im told its a ghost who doesn’t like the recent refurbishments and definitely not dodgy wiring. Generally I’d be happy for a hotel restaurant, but would be disappointed if I can here with my other half for a special meal.

The food and service here are absolutely outstanding. Other reviews knocking the food must be made up or these people don’t know good food. We eat out regularly and love good food and the meal here was fantastic, I couldn’t state a single fault. It’s fine dining and if you appreciate good food then you’ll agree how good it is. The staff were so lovely and our entire stay at Hellaby Hall was brilliant. Breakfast was lovely, a fab choice all well cooked, this place is lovely, 10 out of 10

Awful experience arrived at 6.25pm for dinner it was only us and one other couple in restaurant, bright lightning no atmosphere and looks like a canteen. We asked if we could sit at a different table to which the waitress had to go off and check, bizarre as it was sooo empty !!!! We are seated & already have our drinks purchased previously from the adjoining bar and having previously reviewed the menu beforehand know what we wish to order. All 3 waitresses are chatting in the corner and on 2 occasions I try to call her over whilst she’s at the next table but on both occasions she wants to get back to chatting with her work colleagues and continues to ignore me. When we do get her attention we order promptly, there are no prices on just ordering one course so she needs to check the prices of the steaks ! This should be on the menu as not everyone wants 2/3 courses. We are waiting and waiting for our food and others come in and getting food brought out almost immediately, when we ordered ours ages ago. At 7.17pm we leave the restaurant hungry and upset as we have given up hope of our steaks ever coming out, it doesn’t take that long to cook a steak !!! And they are prioritising guests that have preordered, and myself a paying guest staying at the hotel just doesn’t matter!!! Hotel doesn’t care about its guests whatsoever, as when we got back to the room that night, our phone rang from a very rude manager telling us we still have to pay for food we never received or eaten !!! And he just wanted to argue and thought waiting almost an hour was totally normal for food to come out ! Medium steak is 4 minutes each side ,what were you doing chasing the cow !( On a side note try w-Italian down the road they were fab) on check out the hotel charged us half the cost of the meal we HAD NOT eaten !!! I was not happy about this but as we were staying there and they have your card on file ( even thou it wasn’t authorised )they will just charge you anyway regarding of your complaint, this is the most awful hotel I have ever encountered and I’ve stayed in some fabulous 4/5 star hotels around the world and this one is scraping the bottom of the barrel. Avoid this place it’s the pits

Had a wonderful overnight stay at Hellaby Hall. Both the dinner and breakfast were faultless. We were served by professional, well-trained staff who were attentive and helpful without being intrusive. Would recommend wholeheartedly. Particularly pleased that all the hot food was served on plates that were so hot, they were brought to the table by staff wearing heat resistant gloves. So hate cold plates. I rarely write reviews but this place needs to be celebrated.

This restaurant situated in hellaby hall hotel is amazing value for the style and quality of food. The portions are generous and perfectly cooked and a lot of imagination has gone into creating and presenting the food. Try the grilled Pollock for main and barbecue pork for starters. Sadly we were too full from these to attempt a pudding. The service was a little slow, but they were busy and good food is worth the wait. Excellent Breakfast on the Saturday morning. It was easily the best I have eaten in a long while. Compliments to the chef/kitchen team. Cannot fault anything.

The hotel had recently changed the menu and unfortunately it was not for us. I have to admit I am a fussy eater but could only find food suitable for me in the desert section. My friend who eats a wide variety of food could not find anything to her liking either. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful and explained that the menu had just been changed that week. They did offer us bar meals but they were obviously to be eaten in the bar and not the restaurant. We decided to choose meals from the bar menu which offered a better selection. The restaurant itself is cosy and clean and we did use the facility for breakfast on both days. The buffet breakfast csyeted gir all tastes from cold meats and cheese, cereal, full cooked breakfast, toast, juices and tea and coffee. You certainly left breakfast ready for the day ahead. The breakfast staff were helpful providing us with information on local walks and historic places to visit.A big thank you to the Manager and his wonderful team.

Stayed 2 nights whilst with a coach party. Really impressed with all meals we had. All food was of a good quality and was served piping hot (which was a feat in itself with 40 people in our coach party plus another coach party being served at same time) by friendly accommodating staff. In the morning we were greeted by Wendy and James kept the buffet breakfast well stocked. Again all the food was of a good quality and hide and hot. Would love to go back.

Dined here once again . Just wanted to say that we have always had a nice meal here in the past but this time it was way above expectations. Even though the place was packed we had a 5 star meal. The presentation was a big improvement as was also the food, we had the chicken terrine for starters [ please add some toast] very nice, followed by the slow cooked braised beef rib , that was amazing, will not forget that. A big thank you to all that were involved in making and serving this meal, and also for the great breakfast in the morning, and of course the lovely Wendy for my fresh eggs.

I met a friend who was staying here for an evening meal. Saturday is obviously not a good choice as there was a wedding, coach trips and spa days going on. They were obviously short of staff, a long wait for drinks and only one person serving. Dinner was ok , but prawn cocktail consisted of a few very cold prawns on a lettuce leaf and a smear of dressing, completely tasteless. The main was ok but then we waited half an hour for dessert. By this time it was almost 10 and we were going for another drink but when we saw the queue we gave up. Everyone was friendly and apologetic about the wait. It's a pity because it's a lovely old hall, but not shown at its best

Staying here on business so thought I would give The Carnelly a go. Chose from the Table d’hote menu as it seemed reasonable at £20 for two courses, £25 for three and had some dishes that caught my eye. First course, duck liver parfait was an unmitigated disaster although plated presentation was good. I honestly cannot really describe the taste of the parfait. It was so bland and insipid that I was moved to suggest to the waitress that it had been no where near a duck or a liver. A very slight ‘ week old tuna’ whiff only reinforced that opinion. If that wasn’t bad enough the texture can only be described as something akin to egg boxes soaked overnight in curdled milk.

Cannot actually comment on the food as we didn't get to try it. Menu was totally different to advertised (much much less choice) and only one vegetarian option which did not look or sound very appetising at all. More expensive than advertised too. Terrible ambience in a dreary looking room with only one other couple and another couple leaving for the same reason as us. We visited The Carnelly Restaurant on Easter Saturday whilst staying at Hellaby hall for the weekend. The menu was very appetising with enough choices to consider but not so extensive it felt like a book and you had too much to think about! Our staff on the night really deserve a special mention - Kat (right spelling?) and Becky, who both provided outstanding service throughout. It was very busy in the hotel as there was a large wedding going on and both ladies were periodically covering the bar I believe. Brilliant ladies! The restaurant proved to be an excellent dining experience - it really could not be faulted. We both had the pigs cheek with Asian salad to start, then the duck. Just delicious. Dessert was a mix & match with a chocolate mousse & cheeseboard. Superb service throughout & great food. Ask for one of the tables in the recessed window areas - it almost feels like private dining. Drinks are a reasonable price and the house white is a delicious Sauvignon Blanc, Highly recommended. It was a really relaxed, pleasurable evening and one I cant wait to repeat.

We had two days of breakfast in here whilst staying in this travelodge type establishment. Disappointed by the 2* hotel (definitely not 4*), we anticipated a pleasant breakfast. Not so. The first morning was like being greeted by feeding time at the zoo. There was a large group of footballers/ rugby(?) sitting across several tables dressed appallingly in their kit of shorts and t- shirts (really in a 4* hotel??!!) all piling plates high over several visits to the buffet bar (no table service or anything cooked to order) so there was very little left. Then they decided it was a great idea to start playing some kind of match on one of the many gadgets they all were incapable of putting away, so we were all treated to shouting, screaming and general mob mentality of a sports match. Staff did nothing about this but they should have been told to turn it off. They were all running round like headless chickens seemingly doing nothing. Second morning was just as bad. Nobody greeted us at the door so we stood several minutes before walking towards staff who then all disappeared into the kitchen. When one returned they directed us to a dirty table, which was badly cleaned and reset hurriedly when we returned from the buffet. This was very quick as there was hardly anything left. 3 pastries, practically empty cereal bowls and what was left of the hot food looked horribly picked over. Toast is a make yourself machine, which invariably under or over cooks it. No glasses for juice and 3 people were standing about waiting for them. Dreadful. On the reception deck we saw the list for Mothering Sunday lunches. One family of 4 adults would've been getting a shock when their bill for food (without drinks) was coming to just under £100: that's 3 weeks worth of shopping for us!! Hope their service is better as we were extremely surprised at this 4* (!!!) service. The only good thing was the view out of the window into the garden on our second morning.

Visited here for dinner on Saturday 20th June after reading about it in the AA Restaurant Guide and so had high expectations. After the experience I just wasn't feeling as if it had been a great meal or night out.A large part to play in the reasoning for this was the level of service, which just wasn't attentive at all. Due to the waitresses not walking the floor they did not come across to ask how the food was, or to take any drinks orders. The only chance that we had to get drinks was when they took our food order after a period of time and then when they delivered the food. They just didn't seem bothered at all, and this could play a large part in whether they retain their one AA rosette, especially as I would not be interested in coming back after this experience. Something should also be done about children from the hotel (who were not eating in the restaurant) to simply be allowed to run around within the restaurant itself. This made it look a bit chavvy. The quality of the food was extremely mixed with some very low points, but also with some very high points. As a starter I chose the oxtail ravioli with celeriac puree, capers and a tomato reduction. It sounded so great on the menu, but it was extremely disappointing to then just be presented with one piece of ravioli that was watery and lacked any flavour at all. All of the flavour from this starter came from the other components of the dish instead of the ravioli itself. Avoid this starter and choose something else. The main though of 16 hrs braised rump of beef with boulangere potatoes, fresh horseradish jus and baby vegetables was simply divine. Everything on the plate was cooked to perfection. The dessert of warm carrot cake with edible soil, sweet fennel sand, toffee baby carrots and a caramel sauce was nice, but did not provide a wow factor. On the whole this experience was a very mixed bag (and so resulting in an average rating). The beef dish was amazing and the desset was nice. However, the ravioli dish was extremely poor and the service was such a let down. As a result of this I would'nt go back and would advise potential customers to be wary if they are looking to book this restaurant for a special occasion.

Booked out Christmas party wth a take that tribute band. On the website and Facebook it advertised as pay bar to 8pm then free bar (certain drinks) after. We arrived at 7.45pm and bought drinks as at the bar. Food was served at 8pm prompt. This was when all the problems started. The food arrived stone cold. So cold that the mash potato was solid and could be sliced. Yorkshire pudding looked impressive, although when it tried to cut it, it was so dried out it shattered. I asked for some gravy as none was served with the meal, and I jest not it arrived in a sugar bowl with a spoon. Left most of the meal, so went back to bar for a drink. Ordered a pint of carlsberg only to be told I had to pay. after a discussion with the barman (who agreed it should be free), a manager arrived, with a brochure in hand and pointed out this particular night did not include free drinks. I showed him the website asking where it said that this particular night did not include free drinks. He accused is all of jumping on the band wagon, and demanding free drinks saying that we should have read the brochure. We booked it off the website not through a brochure. He the. Offered to give every table a bottle I wine. I refused as there were 10 people on our table and would only have had a dribble each. I discussed this problem with the rest of the table and decided we would leave as we were getting no nowhere. 4 of the other table left at the se time as us, most if the were younger than us and not brought enough money to stay and buy drinks ll night. The starter was cold goats cheese with brown wilted lettuce, the main course was fatty lamp, with one green bean and re heated potatoes and the dessert was creme brulee - raw custard (separated) and thick toffee that bent the spoon. Bought a voucher from Amazon for a Sparkling Tea for Two and was disappointed with the way the sandwiches and cakes were presented. I was expecting it to be served on a tiered serving tray (as you would) but it came on a slate board. Both my husband and I thought the sandwiches were a bit stingy and too many cakes were served (4 different ones and a scone). The tea cups and saucer were mismatched and the ladies next to our table have to change their cups from an empty table because the tea cup that was on their table was chipped. It was a shame, as we were really looking forward to having a "proper afternoon tea". The lady who served us was really nice though.

Evening meal was really nice. Staff were really nice at evening meal. Forget breakfast waste of time food atrocious, no organisation. Look after yourself, no staff to help.

We went to the Hellaby Hall Hotel restaurant as part of the Hi-Life scheme. The food was of an excellent standard if on the small side. The service was good but a little condescending. We were told what the soup of the day was, which was made with a sort of reduction. The waiter said the reductions proper name and said "and if you don't know what that is, please don't be embarrassed to shout me!". Luckily my fiance is a food teacher and we didn't need to! My dessert could just about fit on my spoon in one go! The starter and main were really well prepared and the veg was magnificent.

Despite a high number of staff and a low number of diners, service was poor with staff forgetting and confusing orders

The food was very nice, tasty, well presented. The staff very helpful and pleasant , always willing to 'ask chef'. Room was very nice, tables well laid. It is expensive as you would expect from a hotel and the drinks bill is high. Nevertheless if you can afford it, great.

We went to the Carnelly Restaurant at Hellaby Hall with a Groupon voucher, and we didn't have particularly high hopes, even though we have sometimes impossibly high standards. The meal was absolutely amazing, we had fish cakes which were beautifully fresh, followed by gnocchi for me and a beef roast for my husband; both superb. However the highlight of the meal for us were the puddings, we chose vanilla cheesecake and I've never tasted anything as delicious at a restaurant . We had a large glass of red (and by large I mean "bucket") included in the deal. The staff couldn't do enough for us and we had such a fab afternoon. We were told that Hellaby Hall had just hired a new Chef, so please near this review in mind when you read the older reviews below which may now be defunct due to this exciting change of staff.Well done Hellaby Hall, you're on again up there with Aston Hall and the Sheffield restaurants.

We have just had our work Xmas party at Hellaby Hall, and we had heard many good things about the place so were looking forward to a good night. This was short lived!I can honestly say that the food was quite possibly the worst I have ever had the misfortune of tasting. After the starter of Tesco value oxtail soup, came the most rediculous excuse for a Xmas dinner I have ever seen. It was a cross between hospital food and an inflight meal served by Ryan Air. The potatoes were practically raw, the gravy was lumpy, and I'm not sure what the turkey substitute was but it was very rubbery and fatty. Cheesecake was for desert, without a biscuit base, which I thought was very original, some may say it was a mousse, but I've had better tasting Angel Delights in my time so couldn't possibly class it as one. Overall we had a great night, but as you have guessed, the chef needs to go back to college sharpish.

We arranged a "half way meet" with family yesterday lunchtime in the Bar. The interior of the hotel was much better than the initial impression. We ordered from the bar menu and waited for about an hour ( maybe longer) only to be then told that they did not have 2 of the 3 things from the menu which we'd ordered. Although the staff were apologetic, we felt this should have been relayed to us earlier. We subsequently left and eat elsewhere feeling quite let down. We would not return.

Stayed here for a wedding. The hotel its self was fine. The staff let it down badly! Check in was fine. We then went to the bar for lunch. Ohh my lord. Slow young inexperienced staff. No tables cleared. Then at night in the main function again very slow young bar staff. Took forever to get served. Everyone was moaning. There was a man that may have been a manager floating about but hardly saw him. More experienced staff needed! Manager should have been behind the bar to see! Seems they charge over the odds for drinks and pay minimum wage for young staff. Management need to be present more and manage staff better.

Fantastic food served by very friendly staff. Surf and turf was amazing followed by honeycomb cheesecake which was presented lovely. Oh and the John Smiths on draught was very agreeable.

Went for Friday as its fish and chip day. As sign outside, showed it was their special for the day. The chips and Mushy peas were average, hard to get wrong really. However the fish not so good. The batter was crispy on outside then wet and slimy inside, looked horrible. It also contained the thinnest piece of fish. It cost £10.30 clearly not worth it. However the service and drinks were good. But as we mainly went for food 2* rating for me. Should have been a sign when only a handful of people were in pub.

Discovered this cafe a couple of months ago and was impressed by the food and friendliness of service - very obliging. Consequently I have lunch here at least twice a week apart from a Wetherspoons Pub (Bluecoats). I highly recommend this cafe for snacks and coffee ( to die for).

To the owner of the fairways, you do not deserve your staff. The fairways is MASSIVELY understaffed, the staff are rushing round like something demented, one person trying to do the work of 3. Sunday lunchtime - one bar staff serving drinks and doing orders for lunch. One young girl in the restaurant serving meals , clearing tables and wiping tables and setting them PLUS taking bookings. The chef, cooking meals, filling up the veg containers, serving lunch and carving meat. We have been going for Sunday lunch every week for over 2 years and as staff have left they have not been replaced. Something needs to be done before they start losing custom.
