The Wharncliffe in Rotherham

Went with friends on a Friday. The food is all prepared and cooked by culinary students and the price is an amazing £12.95 for three courses! For the lunchtime menu. The fish and chips was excellent, light beer batter and fresh fish that fell away in big flakes. Nice setting, good drinks selection and students trying hard to make your visit an enjoyable one. Absolute credit to them. I do think sadly though, that some people fail to remember that this is heavily discounted, quality food, in a lovely restaurant environment, so that the students can showcase their talents. Brilliant and highly recommended.

Fantastic food. The chicken was the best I have ever eaten. Dessert was also to die for. Students couldn't be more helpful. Excellent quality food and excellent value

Highly recommended, I wished they opened more nights. The 3 course meal I had for £15.95 was beautiful presented and the food was cooked to perfection. Staff attentive and is run like a well oiled machine. Deffaintly try this if you have never been.

I really want to keep this place to ourselves as it's so good but you struggle to get booked in. Please come, enjoy how much the wait staff want and do meet the expectations we have. Food great and please tip they deserve it

What am amazing concept, will definitely be back. I had the scallops to start and it's up there with one of the best starters I've ever had. Beef shin for main, absolutely delicious, fell apart, whole dish seasoned very well. My dessert was a peanut butter parfait and I'm so glad I went for that option. Everyone should be super proud.

Absolutely fantastic food, on par with any restaurant I eating in. Service was spot on.

Good effort from the lads. A few rough edges, but that's to be expected. One star off a perfect 5, as the food was a tad overseasoned to my taste (the roasted tomato soup sweetness overpowered the subtler flavours, paprika? and the chips with the burger were well cooked but floppy and were unnecessarily oversalted, as we have salt on the table to add our own). Having been to the Escoffier Room at Westminster College in London we know just how good an experience catering college dining can be. We'll try and get back again on our next visit to the area to try their evening service.

Fantastic dining in experience as part of the college. The food served is beautiful and the students get the full restaurant experience. Also fantastic value for money, one of our go to places before the theatre.

Me and my daughter came here last week and we was blown away by the service/decor/food and the professionalism of the students serving and making the food It was only our second time eating out this year due to the pandemic and we felt very safe here due to all the safety measures in place and it felt like a lovely treat for is both The food tasted beautiful too The offer for 3 courses for £12 is great value too Would highly recommend and we will be back again

Good place to eat, mediterranean food and good meat.

When booking i did not realize this was a college restaurant. Our experience from start to finish was first class. It was really nice to see young people learning a trade.All the staff were polite and coutious. Food was exceptional, only negative I can say was the food could have been a bit hotter. The menu i believe is changed weeklyFood was well presented and plentyful. The restaurant itself was clean and fresh looking. I would defiantly return

The food was great, especially the chips, they might be twice cooked or something, they're well done on the outside without being overcooked inside. You can definitely tell that they make there own chips, pastry, etc. from scratch as opposed to alot of places just microwaving frozen meals. The Mocha is also gorgeous.

Enjoyed a lovely meal served by a very attentive group if students 'learning the ropes' Open for lunch Tues - Friday,and Dinner on Wed and Thurs, I'd definitely recommend for a very reasonably priced meal, well presented and served.

My son who will be joining this college this year doing the same course treated me for afternoon lunch today to get a picture of the quality and service that he will have to do himself and it was an excellent lunch the service was excellent and the meal was outstanding presentation is also outstanding we had the 3 course meal and excellent value for money the wharmcliffe restaurant is extremely clean and welcoming we enjoyed it that much we have booked again in a few weeks when the menu has changed

A group of 20 were served all at the same time, a feat in itself. The food was delicious and hot. The dessert and coffee top notch - well done students wish other so-called classy restaurants were half as good.

Christmas menu mid week on Wednesday or Thursday..excellant food both choices and service.

Booked for 5:45 and promptly shown to our table, the restaurant is very modern with plenty of spacing between tables. Our drinks order was taken quickly followed shortly after by our order for the meal. We ordered eggs benedict for starters and pork and baked cod for the main. We had to ask for bread roles and were not offered water! After some confusion over table numbers we received the starter which was excellent perfectly cooked poached eggs in a delicious sauce. The pork and cod were also beautifully cooked with a nice selection of vegetables nicely presented on a side dish. Overall a lovely meal despite a few hiccups, but the trainees were obviously at the start of there training so can be forgiven

Me and a friend were booking to go to the civic theatre across the road when we saw we could book a pre theatre meal at the wharncliffe never having been before it’s run by students of Rotherham college we decided to make a night of it and I have to say it was wonderful the dining room was very classy and the food and staff was amazing we had 3 courses and every one was delicious for the price we paid tremendous value I’d urge the powers that be to promote this enterprise a lot more it’s a credit to Rotherham

I would of given 5* only today 20/6/2018 i was very disappointed for my 1st try at the dining My son Andrew O'Brien took me as a treat which was lovely food Excellent service second to none upon ordering a afters we were told lemon tart was not avaible so we ordered a alternative However to our surprise the table opposite ordered lemon tart which was not pre booked as they was approached by a waitress and ask to choice they choice lemon tart and was served lemon tart so we was obviously singled out as the Man in Charge had told is staff that it was off the menu I would like a reason for this i will be taking it further i did wish to speak to who ever but my Son had to get back before he was late for a meeting Iv never racism before but this was very much racist i will take my actions further as if a explanation had been given when orders were taken maybe we would of understood

I knew this was a student training restaurant but that did not translate to a poor quality experience AT ALL, it was a lovely night out before the theatre. The menu was varied and had a good selection of vegetarian options. I think it offers more of a "fine dining" experience than I have had elsewhere in Rotherham, including the clean sophisticated decor and helpful wait staff and manager. My only complaint about the Wharncliffe is that it is not open every night! It has limited opening hours and does require booking in advance but planning ahead is worth it.

Fantastic night, amazing food really topped my birthday off. The students and the staff were so well mannered and smartly clothed I give it defiantly 10/10 and so proud that my daughter suggested going there :)

I love coming to this restaurant. The variety and quality of food is fantastic. The staff are positive and keen to learn. They are professional and it's lovely to see young people taking pride in their work. Tgd food is delicious, I have already booked for the November menu and will shortly be booking for Christmas. The venue and the students (staff) are a credit to Rotherham and the college.

We have been going to the Wharncliff for a couple of years (wish we had known about it earlier!) It's wonderful to see the students grow in confidence over the year. We went last night before going to the Civic Theatre and the service and food were Excellent. Yes, they did look like Rabbits caught in the headlights at times but don't forget they are Students. Cannot believe some of the negative comments on here. £12.50 for a three course meal or £10.50 if you are going to the Theatre ....come on please !!!! So give it a go you won't be disappointed .....and full marks to John (Teacher) who guides the students without embarrassing them towards a future in the Hospitality Business ..well done to you all. We look forward to next months Menu.

We asked the wharncliffe to cater for a wedding party of 35 people they put on an amazing spread it was all delicious and fresh finger food most went back for 2nds and 3rds I was extremely impressed great job

The Wharncliffe is attached to the local college and is staffed by students learning the hospitality ropes - you have to try it to appreciate how well they do. Great food, very competitively priced.

The food is very "collegey" and can tell its been written for a curriculum rather then for the experience but we all start somewhere- stude ts are azing FOH and BOH the actual teaching staff are pushy in your face and too teachery

Food not to my taste,not worth the price,what else can i say,i know its a reaching restaraunt but the food is a bit to ott,and not much of it,i like fine dining but this is neither here nor there

Where can I start, I attended the Wharncliffe restaurant due to a business meeting and in all truthiness what an experience considering it is a learning environment all the staff member in training are so professional at all times and was very welcoming and bright If you haven't been you need to Some established restaurants could learn a few things

Party of 4 served with a smile great fresh soup, pork Mel, chicken n veg option all lovely. Amazing puddings could die happy if there was a tasting platter . Good choice of wine and great lattes, one star taken off as emailed that we needed a gluten free option for my husband and phoned to confirm thus had not been passed onto the people on the night which caused some stress which the staff and our party will hopefully avoid next time as we will return again and again.

Went there for Christmas Dinner Special, and that it was, special.The starters were lovely as was the main, the desert was gorgeous, pretty as a picture. The cheese board was a good selection too.Drinks were a little slow but as its students that service the restuarant this can be expected when its busy and it was very busy, but well done, was a lovely night.

An excellent restaurant in beautiful (refurbished surroundings) the staff (who are all trainees) are wonderful and really try their best, the food is delicious, would recommend a visit!!!

Visited this restaurant for a Christmas Lunch in mid December. We were a group of 26. he food is cooked by students from Rotherham college and what can i say it was fantastic. beautifully presented and tasted fantasic and at £14.50 for a three course meal including mince pies and coffee this was great value. The Champaign Sorbet was fab and fresh tasting. Just go and support the kids you will not be disapointed.

When my sister invited us to this restaurant and explained that it was at the college I must admit that I was a bit skeptical as to its quality. Boy was I wrong! When you first walk in you feel that you are in the restaurant of a 3-4 star hotel.The whole ambience of the place oozes quality.Considering that we were just into the new academic year and it was only their third day of opening it was brilliant. OK the front of house staff were a little tentative and nervous which is understandable, but they were courteous and considerate of their customers as you would expect in any restaurant.The menu was a typical Table d'hôte with 4-5 choices for each course. We took the full 3 courses and were happy with everything. We also noted that the wine list was very reasonable priced with some excellent wines available.We'll be back later in the year to see how the students, both front of house and in the kitchen, have progressed. Well done everyone.

The Wharncliffe Summer Opening Hours are from 10:30 till 14:30, from Monday 7 July to Friday 29 August 2014, closed on Bank Holidays and Weekends. During the summer serving a selection of sandwiches, cakes, and drinks.

I am a member of staff at the college (not part of the catering department) and we are proud to have this wonderful restaurant. Yes it is primarily a training restaurant for our students but in response to an earlier review they are being trained to produce high quality meals not 'fast food' all at an extremely reasonable price. Many students go on to work in the high end of the catering industry. The newly refurbished restaurant is light and airy, the place is spotless and the waiting staff are attentive. I have have had 3 course meals, lunches and cakes and have not been disappointed. Finally I can't rave about the coffee enough. The restaurant is open 10.30-2.30 throughout Summer 2014 with normal service resuming in September. Check opening times and book to avoid disappointment.

As an ex student of the college I came in for lunch in june with my partner. Service was excellent as always and food was top notch and fresh. Keep up all the good work , tutors and students we will visit again soon.

We've been dining here for many years and had some memorable meals for very little money. Recently, it has undergone a major refurb and the dining experiences it offers have changed too. Whereas it used to be formal dining, lunch and dinner, in very traditional surroundings, on a table d'hote basis, there are now more casual options. Coffee, tea and snacks are available throughout the day with more formal dining in the evening. The food is always good, the wine list is very moderately priced and of good quality and the ambience is now modern - a little minimalist so far, but there are plans to put art work on the walls when the college students have built up larger portfolios. Because this is a training restaurant, you have to be patient with the serving staff but they are always willing, friendly and courteous and are extremely well-managed by the senior tutors. If you want quality food at a very reasonable price then this is well worth a visit.

We called in for lunch today. There were very few diners in but we enjoyed our meals. One was not what I asked for(plated house salad) and the other was ploughmans lunch. They then came to say that there was no ham to go with the ploughmans lunch, so to cut a long story short we had two club sandwiches. The portions were huge and I had to bring one sandwich home in a doggy bag! (Hubby managed all his of course) As well as two double de cker sandwiches there was side salad all for £4.50 each. The amount and quality of ingredients were excellent. Staff were attentive without being overpowering and I will be returning, if only for the coffee cake (£1.00 bargain) and they gave us a box to take it home! All in all I would say support our local students in their learning.You cant really lose.

I love this restaurant. The food is amazing and the service is excellent. As it's a college training restaurant the service is a little slow at times so don't go if your in a hurry buts it's well worth it. The prices are low which means you get more than your monies worth.

Sometimes you have to grit your teeth in training restaurants, sit back and think of England - you're helping to train up the next generation of kitchen staff - but this is unexpectedly good. Not so the service: it was enthusiastic but hadn't really registered what the kitchen was doing. Luckily the kitchen was more clued up and dishes such as mushroom and lamb tortellini (a starter) and a particularly succeesful braised lamb impressed. Two of us had three courses for £24 before drinks and you wouldn't get that anywhere else in Rotherham now Jamie Oliver has departed. They're keeping up the good work.. Well worth keeping an eye on. Lunch is the same as early evening dinner

We at from the formal dinning menu, two unusual and perfectly cooked courses for £9. Top presentation and service. Recommend the oriental chicken.Good coffee at a very reasonable price.Nice ambiance and quick service,Only fault would be the amount of times that I was asked ' everything ok with your meal' became a little irritating.

The quality of food has always been of the highest standard, and in the past this has always been complimented by the extra niceties of:- table cloths; crumbing down service ; side plates of perfectly cooked vegetables; and an atmosphere of luxury, within a room where furnishings absorbed sound, so that you could have a quiet conversation.Modernity (and the accountants), dictate that all of the above are no longer offered.What additional goodies do you get for the price increase of over 25% ?Well modernity, for sure – mainly hard flooring – no soft furnishings – changing LED’s covering the bar area; and strip lights in each window to ensure that onlookers on the outside can see everything that’s on YOUR plate through the shop window.The philosophy for the new restaurant is to prepare students for work in the fast food industry, and to give them experience in a pressured environment. On our recent visit, staff outnumbered diners. Not pressured yet then.The new look also aims to attract casual customers to come in for a bacon bap from 7.30 in the morning. Maybe the College Staff will call in for a single course for £7 in their lunch break. The Jury is out. We went to the Wharncliffe for a 6 course meal and was extremely impressed. The standard of food was exceptional and the service by the students was superb. The venue isn't flashy but it didn't effect us having a great evening. I also value the fact that students are learning essential skills on the job and they paid great attention to making sure we were happy with the service. If you go make sure you tip, the students deserve it.

I have been here quite a few times now. The food is second to none. This is a training restaurant attached to Rotherham college. I went there with work colleagues not expecting much to be fair. I was ridiculously impressed by this place. The decor is not the most modern but is lovely and clean and there is a nice intimate atmosphere to it. Even though these students are learning the service is great. Yea occasionally they do get bits of the silver service for instance, the wine glass on the wrong side. However they are always smiling and enthusiastic. The food was tasty, plentiful and beautifully presented. Three courses and a warm mince pie for later on all for 12.95 absolute bargain. Will be going back.

This is fine dining on a budget. This restaurant is attached to the teaching college and it is the most fantastic value for money that I know of. The food is superb every time. Menus are changed on a regular basis and the students provide silver service. Where else can you get all this for for three courses at £8.50. I cannot praise this venue enough.
