We had such a lovely couple of pints at the Royal Oak just now. Lesley (Landlady) made us feel very welcome and served us delicious pints of Sam Smiths and two pie and mash dinners (I had the steak and ale - so tasty). My Dad is from Ulley (an Ulley-er) and he has lovely memories of the pub in its golden years. It's so nice to see the place under new management and on a new journey. Food was reasonably priced and the atmosphere was great. We will for sure be back - thanks Lesley!

A stain on the village of Ulley, if you're an idiot and liked to be told by countless signs what to do , this is the place for you, if like the rest of us you have your own mind then forget this place most people have we can relax knowing it'll be closing soon.

Nice friendly, efficient service. We had a cheese and pickle sandwich and a portion of chips between the two of us. We also had a coffee and half pint of beer. All of this for about £12. We were very impressed. There were lots of picnic tables outside the pub so good for eating outdoors and enjoying the sunshine.

I am so glad this pub is open again! 😃 Second time back. New staff running the venue are working really hard and care about ensuring the drink and food prepared onsite are top notch. We popped in today before the football, had their fish and chips and burger, Wow amazing food. What ever you do ask for "Pete's Chips" he's cracked how a chip should be cooked. 10/10 Also, there are many specialty meals evenings planned so check them out. We'll definitely be back. I know it's a Sam Smiths pub, and I know u can't take your phone. But the beer is good, and cheap. The crisps are great. Take a pack of playing cards with you or a boardgame. And enjoy talking and nattering. Oh before I forget this pub is a quintessential British country pub, beautiful with a lovely safe beer garden and pleasant surroundings. Thanks to you all at the Royal Oak you are doing an amazing job. Corrected mistake, sorry Pete. Your chips are better than Dave's

My partner and I went for a lunchtime pint today the 16th June. Really disappointed when it closed four years ago. We were pleased to see that it's still a Sam Smiths pub with reasonable beer prices. Didn't have a meal, which was good because it appears that it's necessary to book in advance. Had a peep into the restaurant, one table occupied! Lots of rules and regulations. Signs prohibiting dogs, muddy boots, electronic devices of any kind. No music. I hate loud music in pubs but gentle relaxing background music would always be welcome. Atmosphere was quite intimidating and we felt inclined to flee after the first pint. This was a Sunday and the pub was empty. Something is not quite right!!

This is a real traditional pub tucked away in the village of Ulley, we went on a beautiful Sunday afternoon with our dog although we couldn't take our dog inside the pub there is plenty of seating outside. I ordered Sunday dinner and,was politely informed that food couldn't be ordered for outside on a Sunday( wich is fair enough) so had a drink, then the chef came to our table and said he would make us a Sunday dinner, he did and I must say it was delicious, the pub is a great place to visit very friendly and the staff are really helpful we will try the fish and chips next time, as the landlady recommendeds it, bye the way the price's are very good too,see you soon.

WOW!!!! Don’t recall seeing such bad reviews ever! Please… just take a few minutes to read them. I have concluded that the rude landlord makes excuses each time a negative review is posted. I had just finished work, (NHS nurse, who turned up in uniform, and would stake my professional registration on the validity of the truth of this review), when I called to make polite enquiries about visiting for meals. I was somewhat struck at the list of “rules” outside on a placard, and made a comical comment about them to the two polite bar staff inside. In conversation with them, I did agree about people using mobile phones to cheat on quiz nights and asked about taking a photo of the bar placard bragging about being a “digital detox pub” to show my husband. The two bar staff were okay with this, but as I clicked my phone I heard a rather loud “no.” As I turned to my left, I saw another barman, (I now believe him to be the much maligned rude landlord referred to on many reviews). I turned cheerfully towards him thinking he was joking. I said “sorry” to which he barked rudely and aggressively “no!” Still believing this to be typical good hearted Yorkshire banter, I said “shut up… are you joking?”. He immediately replied “leave the pub!” I asked why, and he told me in a rude and aggressive tone “you’ve told me to shut up and used your phone.” As I turned (without further comment, as it had dawned upon me that he was totally unreasonable and intransigent), he barked at me “close the door on your way out.” As the two polite and reasonable bar staff will concur, I had a conversation with them about how lovely and traditional the pub was, and that I had been a regular many years ago; I enquired about sunday lunches, about which I was advised to book. Conversely, I was also on a scouting mission on behalf of 60-70 fellow NHS workers to enquire about Christmas bookings for December. Guess what my feedback and decision might be? Hmmm… reminds me of a previous reviewer = “run like a concentration camp.” Conclusion = AVOID! AVOID! AVOID! Read the reviews… they can’t all be wrong.

Went for food. Sadly we were asked if we had pre booked food, place was empty we were told that we had to pre-book our meals so they could buy it in fresh. When asked how to pre book ( eg do we phone) we was asked for our email and told they would email us instructions. We never got instructions. I suppose we are not their demographic...... Sad really Peter and wife ( landlord and landlady) seemed nice. Some of staff very unfriendly. So restaurant with no food a novelty idea just don't see it as a good business model. Good start for a recently re opened pub. Thanks for the reply I am amazed you remember us. Only the young girl was present on our arrival she being the one telling us we had to pre book our food. We then sat quietly in a corner to drink the drinks we had bought. Peter and wife only showed their faces to accept the sack of potatoes someone seemed to give in exchange for drinks and vanished as quick as they arrived. The older barmaid arrive just as we left she was the one we asked how we should pre order and after a disgusted look at us and the young girl asked for our e mail and said they would be in touch. Nothing else said. Our review was an honest one and the implications it was not just highlights the attitude to your customers ( none regulars or perhaps we need to bring a sack of potatoes if we visit the again) Thanks again for the welcome.

Second time at this pub which we had previously enjoyed. Took friends and my 12 year old daughter who apparently isn’t allowed in. Told this after we had bought a drink and sat in the far room. I have absolutely no problem in the rule and sat in the car with my daughter to finish our drinks and wait for our friends to finish. What I did have a problem with is the ignorant, rude landlord who simply said ‘’How old and not allowed in here, ok in the restaurant until 7’’ who the walked off. I took my daughter outside and we finished our drinks in the car whilst waiting for our friends. When my friends came out I took my glasses back in and spoke to the landlord stating I had no problem with the rule but I don’t like the way you spoke to us. His response was simply ‘’on your bike’’ I have never met a more ignorant or arrogant man . There is a saying you reap what you sow and I certainly hope that proves to be the case. Strange place. I went in on my own, spent about £20 quid, and then the new barman told me I couldn't use my mobile phone. I was only reading work emails. Apparently it's supposed to be one of their selling points to ban mobile phone usage. I should have challenged him, but I just walked out and won't be spending there again. Good luck with that policy. See how long it lasts. Stupid Yorkshire exceptionalism at its worst.

But oh my word...the landlord and land lady really stepped up to the plate! didn't bat an eyelid at the extra 40 odd people to feed and just got on with the job...marvs! because we all meet their before the service the landlord got extra help in knowing they were all coming back for food and drink...what a star. Trust me...nothing was to much trouble. Great beer. Lovely food. Lovely environment. I think they are stuck though by the owner of the pub. Being a cash only bar put a majority of the mourners in a tricky situation as they nearly all just arrived with credit cards...i think this is the big thing that should be changed. We gave this another visit and I have to say that it is much improved since our last visit. There are signs now at the door advising that there is a dress code (I can fully appreciate their viewpoint as it was a magnet for undesirables) the rules aren't strict and go a long way to improve the experience for all visitors. Sadly the food wasn't brilliant - we both had fish finger sandwiches but they were deep fried in old oil and the oil had gone into the fingers so you got the oil with every bite. This can be easily rectified and with a little bit more care in the kitchen this wouldn't happen. It is very good value for money and I'm sure in a few months it will be even more improved. We will be back soon.

We've been coming to the Royal Oak for years and it is heartbreaking to see this once beautiful place going down the pan. It is now a magnet for what you could term 'undesirables' who sit straight outside the entrance, swearing, spitting, chain smoking and having no regard at all for other customers. There was a time, not so long ago that locals in the village would frequent it daily, joining in with the banter at the bar, helping each other out with things and welcoming visitors to their local with a friendly nod or a simple 'hi' when you walked in. The staff now just don't seem interested, they seem to be more intent on sitting outside smoking at any opportunity with the chain smokers, swearing and just not doing their job, I've constantly seen them returning empty handed and not bringing any empty glasses back in and going back behind the bar without washing their hands and serving those who have been stood waiting for a while. The place needs a spruce up and a lot of tlc and it needs someone getting hold of it and giving it a good shake up to bring it back to life. Come on Sam Smiths, enough is enough, before it becomes terminal, sort it out.

What is the world of Samuel Smith coming too the most strictest hostel you will ever enter no trainers to be worn no chip butties no baseball hats no other in the chain have these rules WHY? no workwear I can understand who wants to sit down & be covered in dirt/dust but remember where the pub is based people go walking in the surrounding area get a grip man snobbery will get you nowhere with all the rules

We last ate here sometime ago at which point everything had gone downhill. I met my husband there eleven years ago, the food was fabulous and we got on so well we married the following year. In the meantime the place has suffered from the brewery constantly changing the management teams and therefore the pub and restaurant have suffered. We went a few weeks ago for a drink and wre pleasantly surprised to hear new management were coming in shortly, a new menu and the restaurant reopening. We thought great! Then it all went sideways. On the grapevine we heard that there is a dress code, fine, loads of restaurants have dress codes. So, I rang the pub to find out exactly how the dress code was being implemented. No! The dress code was throughout the entire pub and even into the beer garden which no longer caters for children with all play equipment having been removed. I said I as surprised about the dress code extending into the car park. Explaining that my husband is disabled and only comfortable in trainers and jogging bottoms the lady did say there were exceptions being made for disabilities etc. Then I asked what had prompted the dress code in the first place assuming it was maybe a brewery mandate, first she told me yes it was and then did a u turn saying that the pub management were trying to discourage walk ins! This pub is historically a walkers pub, they're going to suffer quite badly because of this, they are also not allowing anyone to use the pub if they're on two wheels. I'm a pillion rider, in my 60s, have loads of friends with expensive luxury bikes, all of us know how to behave and have a good time whilst being on our best behaviour, I don't expect the pub will be long before it's locked up again.

This is the first time I have written a review but feel the need! The Royal Oak is a great place to sit outside with family and friends and enjoy a few drinks in the sun and is well used by local people from the village as well as people from further afield. All the recent rules, bans, early closures etc are down to Sam Smiths NOT the landlords who are new and undoubtably having a nightmare trying to run the pub with this craziness going on! Let’s hope the recent press articles make the brewery think and it gets back to normal. They clearly need to spend some money updating the pub and providing a better dining experience if they want to make it nicer, not banning the customers! We don’t want this pub to close please keep going!

Beyond bad... I have never ever been anywhere so unwelcoming and met such unnecessary judgmental people. I can't say one good word, just sad that such places are allowed to exist. That is all I can say, in fact, i am speechless, and yes, before you ask, I did wear shirt, trousers and nice shoes.

Just to put things straight... The management of this pub have not banned motorcycles, sitting on walls, high viz vests, all vests, trainers, and baseball caps, jogging bottoms.... The looney tune owner Humphrey Smith(Sam Smiths Brewery) has done all this. Humphrey Smith has never lived. Bully with a badge.......... I have given the pub itself 5 stars, because it is. I feel for the staff.

Would have given it more stars but for the fact the kids play area, that has been there for years has been removed! Used to be a lovely place to sit out in the sunshine and have a drink while the kids played.

A list of rules greet you as you walk in. No motorcyclists, no swearing,no children after 7pm, no sitting on the wall....... The pub used to do lovely home cooked food but now does a range of mainly frozen products supplied by the brewery. Cheap beer and nice people. Just needs a new brewery owner.

Called for a drink on a sunny afternoon. Lady ( I use this term loosely) behind the bar unfriendly and more interested in talking to another customer than serving and greeting us. Lots of notices up about things they don't allow...sitting on the wall one of them. Cheap beer made up for the grumpy short-haired woman who was serving.

What a diamond! Forget craft beers and real ale: THIS is real ale. Not a brand name in sight, even the coke is own brand! The pub is charming and has a real old school feel, oh and it’s cheap too!

We've been here twice and had lovely meals on both occasions. It was like mum's cooking! Service was good, friendly and welcoming staff. We've had the liver, chicken and steak - along with deserts and no complaints at all. Will definitely go again

The last time we ate at Royal Oak, Ulley the food was dreadful (over cooked battered fish). Got the impression it had lost all its appeal and custom. In past it had great food for its prices and fab Sam Smiths beer. Its extraordinary location, characterful building (with large carpark) always made it an enjoyable destination for all.

Went for Friday as its fish and chip day. As sign outside, showed it was their special for the day. The chips and Mushy peas were average, hard to get wrong really. However the fish not so good. The batter was crispy on outside then wet and slimy inside, looked horrible. It also contained the thinnest piece of fish. It cost £10.30 clearly not worth it. However the service and drinks were good. But as we mainly went for food 2* rating for me. Should have been a sign when only a handful of people were in pub.
