Super spot opposite the station, rooms are clean and comfortable with ensuite amenities. Breakfast was super also. There doesn't seem to be any noise come through from the bar in my experience. Would recommend for short stay

Since the change of ownership about a year ago, The Howey has transformed dramatically. The owner (Dino) and management have spent so much time, money and effort transforming this place from ‘just a pub’ to a real community asset. The management in particular (Bruce, Lindsay) give the place such a positive, welcoming family feel. Food is fairly priced, ample portions and delicious. Highlights for us are the loaded fries from the pub snacks menu and we love our Saturday morning breakfasts every few weeks. I cannot recommend this place enough - a gem.

After a good night had an outstanding breakfast. I chose the small breakfast, it was enormous I added black pudding, it could barely fit in the plate along with egg, bacon, sausage tomatoes, beans, mushrooms, hash browns and toast. Delicious.

More than 40 years have I been visiting this establishment from the late 70s I have seen it at the height of popularity thru to the end of the eighties from then it tried but never made itself what it could have been until now that is its a huge improvement and has a good menu that caters for most. After meeting the landlord will be trying out the Sunday dinner very soon.

I thoroughly enjoyed our Sunday dinner experience at the Captain Howie pub in Littlestone, New Romney. The roast beef was cooked to perfection, accompanied by tender carrots, broccoli, and a delightful Yorkshire pudding. The gravy and roast potatoes added an extra layer of flavor that made the meal truly exceptional. Just as I thought this could not get any better, I was presented the most amazing homemade sticky toffee pudding that rounded off the afternoon on a sweet note. The attentive waitresses and Kayleigh, the landlady, provided excellent service, contributing to the overall positive dining experience. I would highly recommend Captain Howie for a delightful Sunday dinner outing especially after a long walk along the coastline.

The staff were lovely. The breakfast was great. Everything was clean. Beds comfortable. But the building and rooms look "tired". Urgent need of a facelift and/or refurb.

We booked a table in the restaurant at the end of a train journey to see Santa. It was booked for 2.30pm. The train journey actually ran late so I phoned to explain and was told no problem. We arrived at the restaurant and were shown to our seats. Our drinks order taken promptly and after a little wait our food order. We did have quite a wait for the food - the adults in our group were not fussed about this but for our young children having jacket potato and beans this surely could have been less. When the food arrived there was loads of it ! Obviously cooked fresh - each meal (we had 3 different ones) were delicious -and such generous amounts. We had no room for pudding ! All in all a very pleasant experience and we will certainly return soon. Thank you.

Booked earlier in the week to take the family for Sunday lunch, was offered the choice of a early or late sitting, the late sitting was best for us (2-30). Arrived in plenty of time and were seated. We were the last table to be called up to the carvery, only to find they had run out of Beef and had no roast potatoes left. Although we were not charged for the roast dinner, or lack of it, we didn't go there for a complimentary lunch, the last customer is as important as the first. This was most embarrassing for me taking my family for a Sunday roast to a place that mismanaged the amount of food required and then told us that other customers had taken too much. This was the worst Sunday lunch experience I have ever had. The one thing I have learned is never take a late sitting.

Nice sofas and a big screen TV, good Pool table downstairs and very classy clientele - Howey is the only place I have been recognised for being a Countdown Octochamp by a stranger at the bar. I wasn't even wearing a lairy shirt :)

Arrived without a booking, but got a table, even though we were initially told they couldn't fit us in until 14.30, which was odd as it was half empty. Staff were very pleasant, and had a good selection of meat, breed, pork, turkey, and gammon, plus a variety of veg. Food was very nice, and had good flavour, with a rich gravy. Would visit again, but to avoid any problems, would recommend pre-booking.

Just across the road from New Romney RHDR railway station. Somewhat put off by the external scruffiness, but inside the dining room was comfortable quiet and attractive. Menu was standard pub fare, very well presented, and very tasty and thoroughly enjoyable. Staff were absolutely first class, friendly and helpful. Beer was good and overall an excellent lunch. Would visit again for a meal. Recommended.

Popped in here around 1.30pm to see if we could get some lunch. The next serving was at 2.30pm so we decided to wait. The bar area is warm and welcoming and the staff were friendly. We were taken to our table on time for the carvery lunch. It's a very small restaurant but nice and clean and comfy. The food was fine, it was freshly cooked and nice and hot. I think it was £14.95 per person - it was Christmas lunch rather than regular Sunday lunch - which was pretty good value. I'd visit again.

We were exploring the RH & DR stations when we decided to stop for lunch at New Romney and get away from the trains for a while by visiting a local pub.The Captain Howey hotel was literally opposite the New Romney railway station so we thought we would try it.Initially we thought we had got it wrong because the door we used gave access to a pub type bar with television going and fairly loud pop music competing with some rather noisy lads at the bar. However, I could see a genuine restaurant to our right and asked the barmaid if we could sit down there for something to eat rather than in the bar. Once we had sat down she brought menus and I explained we were happier with less noise and were suprised when she said she would have happily turned the volume down, a most unusual attitude in pubs I find. We were really only after a snack lunch rather than a full meal and the choice of sausage and fried onions in a baguette seemed good even if rather pricey. When it arrived I found I had not one, but two of these baguettes absolutely filled with sausages and onions, accompanied by chips and salad - a bargain. What was even nicer was the fact that the lady who brought our lunch asked if there was anything else we required. And, the local draught beer was good as well. One nice thing was that at no time we pestered for charity donation which seems to be the practice nowadays. It was well worth visiting and the hotel side of things seemed to be rather more traditional. We will have to try it some time.

We had a good sunday lunch at the Howey. There were four meats on offer all of which looked well cooked. Vegetables were excellent - not over cooked - just right. The restaurant was neat and clean with fresh linen. A good point was the absence of dreadful piped music so conversation was possible. On the con side, the plates could have been warmer and the puds were obviously not home made. All in all we were very happy and will return.

Visited this restaurant at short notice last night. We didn't particularly want to order a whole restaurant meal as our party consisted of 4 girls having a 'catch-up' and a gossip, so we asked the landlord if we could just have a mixture of items from the menu on a platter to share. The staff were incredibly accommodating, made us feel very welcome and not at all the 'pain in the backside' that some of us gossipy girls can sometimes be. The food we tried was high-standard pub food at a very reasonable price, and the restaurant was very clean, comfortable and looked inviting. We'll be back to try something 'proper' off the menu. Thanks guys x

There is something of the 40s about this pub named after the co-creator of the RHDR narrow gauge railway. Lunch was unspectacular but perfectly palatable and reasonably priced. Friendly chap behind the bar and the coffee was almost brilliant. Good quality, came in a cafetierre but served with (Aaaargh!) UHT cream in horrid little plastic pots. Eveyone knows that UHT cream is made by mixing plaster of Paris with white emusion paint and custard powder. Milk (preferably hot) in a little jug is the simpler and far superior option.

The Howey serves the freshest and best Sunday lunchtime carvery anywhere. Meats are locally sourced and there is always a great selection. Vegetables and accompaniments are served in relatively small dishes at the carvery and are constantly replenished with fresh servings - nothing is ever stale or kept on the warming servery for more than a few minutes. Superb!

Can't comment on the rooms as I only went last Saturday for a family lunch, but that was extremely enjoyable. The bar staff and waitresses welcomed us and the position of the dining area is good as it is a few steps down, away from the bar area and the tables are well spaced apart.First impressions were good: beautiful clean white tablecloths. The menu had a pretty good choice and when the food arrived it was very nicely presented and tasty.Nice bottle of Pinot grigio (OK the waitress didn't know that is a white wine, but I am no sommelier either) and it was chilled in an ice bucket. Reasonable prices when we paid the bill so we all went away happy. Will return another day.

Atmosphere and staff were great and was a lovely environment. Although, it's now the second time I've eaten there and the second time I was disappointed with the food. It may be my personal taste, but I just find the food to just be "OK". For an establishment with such a nice vibe - and price - I expected the food to be better. Perhaps it's just too fancy/hipster for my taste. Having said all that, I would certainly go back for a coffee or beer, just not food.

The ambience was good plus service excellent however the ox cheek was slightly off .Fresh cuts I would recommend if they are marinating in wine over knight .My partner enjoyed the bangers and mash .I did enjoy the cabbage and the gravy though and food presentation went well with the red wine .It’s a sad shame that they no longer serve ravioli .This is one of the places that had that good ravioli .

Our visit to Port Lympne today was excellent, until a deeply disappointing experience at the gift shop, which left us feeling frustrated and disrespected. Our group consisted of 10 disabled adults and 4 carers, all with concession tickets, and we tried to visit the shop around 4pm. When we arrived, the doors to the shop were abruptly closed in our faces by a staff member, who explained that it was “too dark” for us to enter so the shop was closing after three separate doors were closed on our faces. However, we noticed that one member of our group was allowed entry through a side door with the instruction to “be quick.” Confused, the rest of the group attempted to follow and were met with rude shouts that the shop was closed. A carer asked why only one person from our group was allowed in, while the rest were turned away. The staff member’s response was dismissive and rude, claiming that everyone could enter but needed to hurry. This response completely disregarded the fact that our group consists of adults with disabilities who require additional time and support—rushing them was simply not feasible. The overall tone was unhelpful and insensitive, leading us to decide to leave the shop entirely. We understand that there may be operational challenges, but treating disabled visitors with respect and understanding is essential, especially when they are paying customers. This experience was not only unpleasant but also alienating. We hope Port Lympne will consider how to better accommodate all visitors, particularly those who need extra time and support, in a more respectful and accessible manner in the future.
