Take all your tarts, oh Chefs, and bin them, fools: For None can match Dave’s Tart Tatin at all! Which my love and I did eat last Thursday night Which Chef Dave did bake so sweetly, and just so tight Twas apples tucked upon pastry, exquisite syrup, too Dave’s Tart Tatin celestial, visionary, and baked en croute. It sizzled at the table, steam whirled around like dreams And then polly brought perfect accompanying ice cream We bit the tart so fast, that my true love burnt her lips Which believe me are exquisite, as were the syrup drips We drank the fizzy Vouvray, then devoured the sacred tart and we took another breather, and talked about fine art. Dave’s tart tatin disappeared as we dived last time upon it And then we went home together - but that’s another sonnet. Written by Shakespeare when he was 18-and-a-half and working in the kitchens of the Globe, and already his potential was clearly clear.

Phenomenal food. Best fried eggs I've ever had. Best remoulade too. Yet the black pudding wontons were the highlight. The place was quiet on a January cold evening so I can't really comment on the normal atmosphere. Lovely.

Phenomenally overrated. We sat in a shabby room at the rear that was full of pointless furniture, the lighting and ambience was dreadful. Maybe I’m lucky to have an enthusiastic cook at chez nous but this meal was very average and vastly overpriced… the icing on the cake ? A 75ml glass of pineau at £9 (the price of 75cl in leclerc) and a glass of Sparkling vouvray £11.50 (6€ a BOTTLE in France). Avoid

It's nuts that TripAdvisor's algorithm ranks this as the 41st best restaurant in Folkestone (at the time of writing). I'd say it's one of the best restaurants in the south east of England - and far and away the best in Folkestone (miles better than Rocksalt!) The food is absolutely delicious - perfectly cooked, inventive and fresh. The wine is fantastic, the atmosphere is great and the service is friendly and attentive. It's perfect. The people on here writing reviews moaning about the crockery, prices or things running out on the menu ought to just go to Pizza Express - this is a brilliant independent restaurant that I'll come back to again and again.

I think this will end up being the very definition of a mixed review... I've now dined at the Folkestone Wine Company twice - both to mark special occasions. The first visit was fantastic. The food was excellent - I'm a fan of concise/well thought out smaller menus - but what really elevated the experience was the service. We were greeted warmly, the small team were very attentive throughout, and we were made to feel quite special. As a result I didn't mind splashing out. Fast forward to my second dining experience... Perhaps we visited on an off day but I couldn't help leaving feeling that some of the spark/magic had gone. The food was enjoyable and the wine was excellent, but everything else felt a little lacklustre. For example we weren't given side plates when we ordered bread, the same applied when ending with a cheese course (it would have been nice to be told what the cheeses were), we weren't given a wine cooler, we weren't asked how our meal was... Small details perhaps but all add up to the overall experience. At the price point (£60 per head which included wine but one starter and one cheese course was shared between three) it's a shame it didn't meet the same standards we received when first dining.

The Folkestone Wine Company is a delightfully intimate restaurant in the old town with a charming rustic interior. The tiny bar hosts an old style record player providing soothing background music and the front of house leads onto a small room at the back with views into the kitchen. The menu is small and select offering one meat and one fish dish, displayed on a blackboard and changes with the seasons depending on what is fresh and available with all ingredients sourced locally. With the renown David Hart at the helm we knew the food was going to be good but it surpassed both of our expectations. We had a glass of the sparkling Vouvray with the Caponata, buffalo mozzarella and pine nuts and the mussels, cider and leeks with cream. I had to ask for a soup spoon and some of the delicious homemade soda bread to mop up the delectable cream sauce which accompanied the mussels. For mains we had both of the meat and fish dishes on offer - the cod fillet, roast peppers, barlotti beans and aioli and lamb rump, flageolet beans, tomatoes and rosemary with charlotte potatoes. With just enough room for dessert we opted for the Basque gateaux which came with preserved strawberries and a generous serving of cream. The dishes were all cooked to perfection, beautifully presented and the portion sizes were equally perfect. In fact everything about our meal was perfect. The wine list is very extensive with a good by the glass selection and suggested wine pairings are posted on the blackboard. Polly, the owner and front of house, suggested the Reserve de Gassac 2022 which was an excellent accompaniment for both dishes and has an impressive mix of grapes - Viogner, Chardonnay, Chenin, Sauvignon Blanc and Grenache Blanc. The food was excellent and the service very personal. It felt as though we were dining in a countryside kitchen. Polly was charming, engaging and attentive and we happily went with her excellent recommendations for wine and dessert (off menu) which proved to be spot on. We really loved our meal here and the restaurant - it’s bijou, quirky, slightly eccentric, offers authentic French style cuisine served on mis-matched vintage crockery and an extensive selection of wines in the heart of Folkestone. It’s not short of awards and recommendations from top food critics and chefs and it’s not difficult to see why.

I’m scared writing this as the responses from the restaurant are pretty nasty, however, we feel rubbed the wrong way after lunch last weekend. The restaurant had run out of things we wanted that we fancied from the previous eve so we just went with wine and apps and we were pressured and confronted to buy additional food. The wine was fantastic and the food was delicious, however we will not be returning as attitude and service from the owner was unprofessional and outright rude. Edit after reading the restaurants response: We spent 45£ on cheese, ham, and olives and wine. There was only us and one other table occupied so certainly not full. That’s a lot. To run a profitable business, you need to have repeat customers and to be kind. There was a good chance we would have loved to come back as we live in Folkestone.

After reading some of the reviews I was beginning to regret booking but my worries were unfounded. We booked early evening on a Saturday and we’re given a table next to the window where we could watch the world go by.We had a lovely warm welcome and we’re soon offered a drink while we looked at the menu.It was a novel experience not knowing what to expect apart from being aware that the menu was small and changed daily.I started with juicy sweet mussels followed by turbot and my husband had mozzarella and then lamb and we shared a dish of potatoes. We sat very quietly, too absorbed in eating g the delicious food to talk much. All that was left on the plate was the pattern. We followed our mains with a plate of cheese which we shared, followed by an amazing chocolate pudding which we also shared. We drank wine by the glass as wanted different colours and were not disapointed by the suggestions of the waitress.A really lovely relaxing venue with amazing food and great service. Not cheap but well worth the money as a special treat. This was our first visit but it will not be our last.

The restaurant is small and welcoming, a reduced menu with a very good wine list and wines by the glass. Cocktails and local beer (Romney) is also available. The wild garlic soup had been freshly foraged & was deliciously vibrant. The lamb was one of the best lamb dishes I’ve ever had, cooked to perfection, succulent & tender; the salsa verde & turnips set it off wonderfully. It was outstanding. The staff were very attentive & friendly, it was a nice comfortable atmosphere. Having read some of the recent reviews, I was a little apprehensive about going here but I needn’t have worried. Wow, another exceptionally good lunch, thank you Dave & Polly! We are so lucky to have The Folkestone Wine Company in our neighbourhood, we have been countless times since it opened and the food and service continue to blow us away. We were warmly welcomed by Polly with a glass of St John Rosé before our lunch. Yes, it is a shortish menu - small but perfectly formed, like the restaurant. Always seasonal, it changes by the day and I am spoiled for choice. We shared the punchy wild garlic soup and a gorgonzola risotto with broccoli (creamy and dreamy), along with some molinari salami. For mains we opted for melt-in-the-mouth rump of lamb with turnips and salsa verde (I can't get enough of that sublime wild garlic) and halibut with mussels in a cider butter. Serious skills in the kitchen - and Dave's bread is perfect for mopping up those sauces. A zesty citrus posset with rhubarb and shortbread rounded everything off. Polly looked after us on the wine front with this deliciously crisp Bordeaux (see pic). I can't recommend this place highly enough, I'm with Grace all the way.

In Grace Dent's 2018 review, she says that she almost doesn't want to give a good review of this place to "protect it from idiots". If you, like me, don't like your restaurants to come with a side order of "you should be grateful to be here" then you are the type of idiot that should stay away. I have no issue with the simple, short menu, but, if you are only going to offer 3 options for each course, then please do your customers the courtesy (at 8pm on a Saturday evening) of having all of them available. On the night we visited one starter and one main were off, but not crossed off the blackboard which serves as a menu and this set the tone of "we can't really be bothered" that overhangs the establishment. We both went for the egg mayonnaise with avruga caviar for starters (over mulligatawny soup). I expected lush homemade mayonnaise, maybe piped into soft eggs in an ironic nod to this 70s party staple, maybe a well dressed side salad, a crouton...nope. We were presented with 3 boiled egg halves, covered in mayonnaise the consistency of salad cream, with a pungent vinegar tang and a scattering of caviar. My main of beef came without all the fat being rendered out properly, so where should have been wonderful crackling was chewy white gristle. The sauce was thin and watery. One thick slice of beef, some greens and grave for £28 (yes dear reader 28 pounds sterling), potatoes being an additional £4. My partner had the pollock which he described as fine...another pedestrian sauce, the same vegetable accompaniment as the beef and again, no carbs - 22quid to you guvnor. We drank an unusual bottle of white which was enjoyable, and I had two small glasses of good red with my beef. Why two you ask? Well I couldn't stretch the first I'd ordered the 45 minutes between starters being cleared and mains arriving, even taking the tiniest of sips. We didn't stick around for pudding. You pay at the front desk and the owner expectedly asked for me to add a tip....which was awkward. At £128 for 2 courses each and wine, I think I'd contributed enough to keeping the lights on at this establishment, which was obviously a local gem back in 2018. Why didn't I complain? Well we were never asked if everything was alright, or asked if there had been a problem when I declined to tip, and I was not minded to raise my concerns at the till in front of the Folkestone chattering classes (if such there be) who were maybe happy to pay through the nose for a sub par dinner party type experience. I felt sorry for the pleasant young man who was our occasional server. The takeaway is that 2018 is a long time ago, and post pandemic, when maybe eating out was a more throwaway experience for many of us. The past is a different country and they do things differently there. Maybe critics should revisit every few years like Ofsted inspectors...although if you are Grace Dent you will get a different experience to the rest of us I expect, as I am sure your celebrity would ensure the welcome that every customer deserves.

Really wanted to love it here, sadly it was a terrible let down. I rarely say anything if I’m unhappy, I just vote with my feet, however I don’t want someone else to feel the way I and our party felt at TFWC. The ambience was non existent, there was no warmth in the service and we felt we were a nuisance. The four of us had travelled from London separately and two of us had experienced delays, this meant we were reminded on two occasions that the table had to be given back at 8pm. On the twenty minute warning of the 8pm deadline we were asked for desert and told to hurry… so we declined! The food was average, the £60-£70 per head for 2 courses and bottle of wine was eye watering.. and then we were asked to leave a 20% tip! Vote with our feet we will! In reply… Well if we are doing a fact check.. 2 of the party were there at 6 2 arrived at 6.30 - due to travel issues Our two courses = £40 per person We were categorically asked for 20% by you. There were only two staff and I don’t think this is the 16 yr old?! Most people take constructive criticism with open arms and look at what could have gone wrong, you it seems rely on out of date reviews?! For an accurate representation of your food and service see above. I think your reply demonstrates what a patron will be up against should they have differing opinions to your own! For what it was, the food was VERY expensive, served lukewarm and of a quality lower than most home cooks can achieve. I appreciate the effort, but the execution didn't deliver. The waitress wore a dirty apron and had clearly unwashed hair, and no sign of hand washing during service. The 'niche' are we were seating in prior to dining had a tired old sofa in it, with a dirty fabric throw that clearly hadn't been in a washing machine in a long time. Shabby chic is bordering on unkempt and dirty. On a positive note, the wine was good, and so were the bread and olives. They would be the only reasons we'd consider going back. Unlikely though.

We've waited far too long for our first experience of FWC, but it was worth the wait. A simple menu with a handful of choices for each course, changing daily. The freshest of ingredients, perfectly prepared and elegantly presented and plenty on the plate!!! Their own-baked bread, an eclectic wine list with lots of wines by the glass. The secret of course lies in the fact that this is David and Polly's show -- he in the kitchen, Polly masterminding front of house. The other secret is that no one knows until the day what's going to appear on the menu. Yesterday;s meat course was a sirloin that my new neighbour raved over. Today was a confit of pork belly. Superb food and wine at Folkestone's Wine Company restaurant tonight. It was the eve of our wedding anniversary and this feels like a special occasion sort of place if you put emphasis on good cooking and well chosen wine. The front of house team this evening were also excellent creating a super relaxing atmosphere in this quiet restaurant which only has a few tables - you must book in advance. We both chose the partridge starter which added a few dimensions to what I think of bread sauce and its capabilities! I chose the Skate with capers, not my most favourite fish but it was cooked to perfection. My husband chose the Dover Sole which was also superb. We left room to share an excellent cheese board of a French Tomme, an excellent Gorgonzola and Lincolnshire Poacher - we loved the quince jelly too (apologies for the poor pic, we forgot to take the photo before we tucked in!). The food was good but I eat out a lot and I felt that it was very expensive for this sort of venue. Our bill was such a shock that we did not leave a tip so I hope that the prices included the service charge I would normally tip. The wine list was excellent but it could have offered a bit more choice at the bottom end of the list. We ordered the cheapest wine on offer which was very good and when we checked the mark up was reasonable. Why is the UK so expensive, we have just returned from Ireland and have had some amazing meals in fantastic venues for less and Ireland is comparatively expensive compared to other parts of Europe. I know that many businesses may feel they have to increase their prices to pay back Cover loans but it is a tactic that will backfire long term as they lose customers.

A very small but charming restaurant. Sadly, for me, but not my companion, I found the menu very limited and really struggled to find anything that appealed. In my opinion 2 mains was not enough choice and the roasties were new potatoes cooked in the oven. Tasty but not strictly roasties. Treacle tart was good with local unpasteurized cream.

Grace Dent (food critic of the Guardian) reviewed The Folkestone Wine Company (TFWC) in December 2018 and on the back of her review my wife and I took a day trip from London to Folkestone to try out TFWC and we had a very good experience On my dad's 94th birthday we thought it would be a good place to visit to take him out to dinner- oh dear what a mistake. The most annoying aspect of many restaurants of this kind is their lack of consistency- this isn't true of every restaurant we have eaten at as several have definitely warranted return visits. I'm afraid we won't be returning to TFWC which is a shame because one of favourite retail destinations is in Folkestone, which is Strode and Co. At last week TFWC it started off badly- we were shown to a cramped table at the back off the restaurant which could have been some kind of store room which had an excellent view of the toilet. My dad was hemmed in by scruffy looking sofa. Also our table was adjacent to the opened door kitchen and by the end of the evening our clothes were infused with the cooking smells from the kitchen which is not a pleasant aroma. We have eaten in many restaurants where the kitchen is open but we've never taken home the smell of the kitchen. A set of kitchen whites should come with the table were given. By far the worst aspect of the evening was the poor service which as as far we were concerned was largely absent. When we arrived we were given a glass of tap water and we waited 15 minutes for some to take our drinks and food order - we couldn't wait any longer so I had to go the front of house and ask her to ask someone to take order our order. I have to say the Negroni and Rose were very good but to to have to ask the owner for some one to take our order is not acceptable. We had only just started our Negroni and nibbles (green olives, saucisson, bread and butter ) when our sarters arrived which had to be pushed to the side as we were still eating our apertivo and the starters were pushed to the side. No-one bothered clearing the empty apertivo plates and when they did they left half of the empty plates behind. At no point during the 2 hours we spent at TFWC did anyone ask us if everything was ok or was there anything we wanted- I don't like fawning service but I do expect a business based on hospitality to take some level of interest in their customer's experience. As far as the food was concerned it was just so-so- I had beef carpaccio with beetroot and horseradish. All the horseradish I have ever eaten has a lovely mustardy heat but the stuff I was served may as well have been mayonnaise. I knew my chicken was going to be tough as it was an old boiler but it was tasty - what amazed me was how tough the wilted gem lettuce was - I could barely get a knife through and in the end I gave up- bizarre. My guests said their Brill was ok but nothing to write home about. By now we had enough and so we didn't bother with the desert, cheese or coffee. To cap it all when I went to pay the bill I told front of house that the food and service were disappointing give our experience at TFWC the year before- she said would I like to address my feedback to the chef and I said no and suggested she can pass on my comments to the chef. She did go to the chef with our comments but used words and language I hadn't used which I thought was unnecessary and somewhat immature.

Urm, well... it was a mixed disappointment.. we were recommended by a good friend. The olives to start were pickled out of a long life tub, main course was from a choice of two, my fish was beaut, but the sauce it was sitting in was cold, no vegetables Available, only roast potatoes, my husband's duck was good, but no veg again. The plates were saucers. Wine was over £30 for a house, which is abit odd. To sum up, we travel and eat out allot, this was, for me, a disappointment for a £90 bill.
