Excellent tasty food, helpful staff, clean and not overpriced, glad there opening one closer to us in lichfield

We had a late lunch here after a morning of sightseeing. Pleasant surroundings and a fabulous deal - the 8.50 GBP lunch special. The original chicken was very good and the lamb kofta was good - underseasoned to my taste but that seems to be typical in the UK. Service was a bit slow, but very friendly.

The Botanist is really handy for the Symphony Hall, we called in without a booking pre-concert; we were accommodated without fuss and were given very attentive service by Bronson. We enjoyed Mezze to start and then sharing kebabs, all delicious and good portions too.

We had the 8.50 GBP lunch special, and it is a tremendous deal for a trendy restaurant in the Gas Street Basin. The food was very good, and with the salad, hummus and garlic bread, quite sufficient for two older folks. Service was a bit slow, but very friendly. We sat inside, but with a view of the canal.

First visit had heard great things. Stopped for a bite to eat on way to concert @ Sympony hall with our son. Lovely site next to the canal easy walking distance from the Mailbox & Symphony hall. Beautiful early evening sunshine we were able to sit upstairs on the outside terrace. The terrace bar had run out of draft lagers with only IPAs & Guinness on draft. Expecting the full menu we were told only pizzas & sides were available outside. Hey ho we ordered a side of Halumi fries triple cooked chunky chips - both were crispy hot & tasty then the pizza arrived deary me def not what we expected v small & thin frozen base (if it wasn't they've somehow perfected the art of making it look & taste frozen & bought in def factory made) I think maybe toppings had been added to make it look home made 😒 what a disappointment. Food was delivered with no serviettes/plates or condiments. Shame as the food being served inside looked appetising & delicious. Maybe I'm a fuss pot but I know my food & im not in the habit of chritising places but in a prime spot I was expecting much more. All in all won't be rushing back.

While strolling around Gas Street Basin, enjoying the atmosphere and sun, felt a drink was due. So I made my first visit to the Botanist, the atmosphere inside was oldy world but nice, seating outside, overlooking the canal and canal basin, sun out and warm, what better atmosphere could you ask for. I didn't have food, so I can't comment.

Just dropped by for a glass of beer and snacks. Good vibes,nice live music with self services menu. Lovely atmosphere.

One of the best spots for evening drinks in the sun in Birmingham. Decent drinks prices for the city and good bar staff. Tip, two tables along the side (151 and 152) get the sun the longest

Shiv- She is a legend! Best waitress ! Needs a pay rise ! Made my sister in laws hen do the absolute best ! Would defo come again and hope we get Shiv to grace our presence again !

Overall, it’s a really beautiful place—one that actually makes you happy to go there, even for work. Especially with such great weather, like we’re having now while I’m in the UK. I’ve eaten there once or twice, and the food is absolutely delicious. The atmosphere is excellent too. Just a really lovely place, all around.

My partner and I decided to pop into the botanist for a quick drink before carrying on with our day, and what a great choice it was. We would like to make a special acknowledgment to Layla who from the moment we stepped foot into the restaurant made us feel so welcomed and was so attentive throughout our visit. The atmosphere in the Botanist was perfect for a Saturday afternoon in the sun, with live music being played throughout. We will defiantly be returning

This has always been a go to, but sadly had a poor experience recently after paying the bill at the end of a lunch on a Saturday. Update. I did eventually, get an email response. It wasn't great however. I hope they improve their channels of team communication to avoid customers being embarrassed like I was with my family. I've emailed them twice since to ask about it, but no one has got back to me - which makes it all the worse in all honesty. A shame that after many successful visits there, I won't consider going back. Location is great, food delicious, but service was really lacking.

Great location especially sitting outside with the sun shining brightly. Visited yesterday, impressive decor but sadly the staff came across as apathetic and uninterested which was a stark contrast to the other places we visited in the area. Sat outside and noticed that empty glasses were just left on tables with customers ultimately taking upon themselves to clear up. Put off eating here by the staff apathy.

Very nice place. We were lucky to have a place on their terrace in the sun with a live singer. A wonder.

Is gorgeous and works are nice but mind their own business and are very quiet. Lots of plants.

We chose fish and chips and chicken kebabs. We like a lot. Quiet environment, the upper floor is more of a main dining area. And also you can only eat pizza and drink beer by the river. We don’t like this, we want to sit the riverside. But it is okey.

Nice place with attentive staff. Went for the happy hour cocktails, their speciality, the Botonist was lovely.

A bar with a very good location and view. Unfortunately the prices were a bit expensive but it makes sense considering the location. Regarding the service, things took us a long time, and the waiters were always very friendly. It's good for those who live in Birmingham but if you are just passing through I recommend another place where you can see the local culture more fully.

My partner and I visited the restaurant on a Tuesday evening. After checking online and seeing plenty of availability, we decided to walk in since we were already nearby. Upon arrival, we were told by the woman at the front that they weren’t accepting walk-ins due to being “super busy.” As someone who works in hospitality and has even worked for the company before, I respected her judgment and didn’t push back. However, after leaving and double-checking the website, we noticed the same availability still showing. Since we had specifically come to this part of town to eat here, we booked a table for four minutes later. Upon return, we were greeted by a different staff member who seated us at the bar while she quickly cleaned a clearly available table for us. It left us wondering if the first staff member simply didn’t want to clean a table or if there was something more personal behind the refusal to seat us. The restaurant was far from busy. we counted the same four empty tables for two at both the start and end of our meal. The original woman actively avoided serving us, waiting tables all around us while our drinks sat at the bar and our food,though delicious,waited at the pass long enough to cool down noticeably. That said, a young man eventually took over our table and he was absolutely fantastic, attentive, friendly, and genuinely made the best of a frustrating situation. While this experience won’t stop us from returning entirely, it has put a slight dent in what’s usually one of our go-to spots. I just hope this was a one-off and not reflective of a shift in service standards.

An interesting venue right on the canal. The bottomless brunch menu was a bit limited and unless your really into daytime drinking then not great value. That said, the staff were lovely but clearly still training.

Canal side bar and restaurant. Centered in the city centre Gas Basin, and bustling with life and people. Beautiful canal area with long boats and music too. Overlooks a tri-connection of canals with loads of bars and buildings all around. Peaky Blinders style vista in all directions. Well worth a visit. Loads of indoor and outdoor seating. Expect to wait for a table of you want to eat and haven't pre-booked.

Love this place for a drink on the canal side, great atmosphere and live music was a nice bonus. The pizza though was diabolical, for nearly £25 for two I was expecting fresh pizza but it was clearly just a supermarket base with tomato puree and little to no toppings, we were really disappointed and would avoid eating here again at all costs. Really lets the place down!

Went for brunch on a Saturday morning. They didn’t seem quite ready for customers but all was good once they got going. Lovely spot overlooking the canal basin. Looked like a great set up outside with an external kitchen.

Had a super tasty steak with yummy peppercorn sauce. Great cocktails. Definitely would recommend

We had a lovely time, the food was good even when the kitchen was under pressure and the drinks kept coming! The restaurant is decorated beautifully and the staff were all fabulous. I work in customer service so I like to recognise when I relieve great service. Daniel looked after us wonderfully. He provided excellent service with a smile and couldn’t have done more for us. We would come back again just to see him!

We didn't eat, so can't comment on food but there was live music on and they, and the atmosphere, were brilliant.

Can’t say I really enjoy the food here, they have a really good selection of dishes, but it’s too international, they tend to be a master of none. At least the baked cheese and bread was tasty. So was the crispy duck and wrap. Overall environment is really nice and relaxing. The staff are really nice and friendly. After dinner, we went downstairs for some drinks and listen to the live singing performance, which was really enjoyable.

Food was ok. Great service we had a large group and they catered for everyone. The beer was excellent.

La comida era deliciosa (3 de nosotros teníamos los kebabs colgantes) Yo tenía los langostinos tailandeses que eran fantásticos. Mi compañero tenía los platos pequeños que realmente disfrutó. Sin duda recomendaría y volveré. Yo diría que no volvería a tener el pan pitta, ya que costaba más de £ 3 y no era nada mejor que uno que se obtiene en un paquete de un supermercado por una fracción del costo.

Food and service decent but cocktails were load of rubbish. Over priced and under delivered just weak juice. Had to send one back as nothing like first one. Cocktail making is an art form if your gonna serve them then pay for skilled mixologists.

Yes they ran out of fish so I had to choose an alternative from the menu. And yes the service was very polite but a little slow. But if I wanted speedy service I'd have ordered a takeaway. What I got here can only be described as absolutely outstanding, both in taste and presentation. That together with the ambience of the atmosphere within the restaurant. Undeniably the best food experience I've ever had the pleasure of being witness to. Absolutely highly recommended.

The manager, John accommodated us without an advance booking on a concert night at the nearby arena. Had the sharing kebab which was really good 👍 lovely decor in the upper bar. Definitely worth a visit, will return when we are in Birmingham in future.

Booked a table for two, got seated downstairs most likely due to a lack of room. Loved the food and live music, but a little too noisy. Would definitely recommend going though!

I had been wanting to visit for quite a while and when we did eventually come, I left disappointed. I was served the wrong drink 3 times. The meal itself was okay. Nothing special. Their “famous kebab skewer” really wasn’t worth the heavy price you pay for what little you get. And it was just a bit meh. Location is fantastic and the lights light up the canal really nice. It was a shame as we wanted to come and it was really nice scenic wise, to be let down by the food. Atmosphere was great too as they had a man & woman duo on at the time who we great

Be careful to check the invoice carefully. The drink that came by mistake, supposedly offered, was not. They charged us for the à la carte dishes instead of the menu! We checked too late.

Waited 45 mins for our table we had booked at 8:30. When our starters came the arancini were cold and we were told they would be removed from our bill but weren’t. Mains eventually came at 10:30pm. My burger was cold but my partners food was ok. The guy serving us and the host were friendly so is a shame to leave a bad review. We were given a free round of drinks to compensate the long wait for our table. Probably wouldn’t come back.

I don’t usually leave negative reviews, but unfortunately our Valentines date was completely ruined!! 🚫 Booked a table for a Valentines meal at 9:15, excited and incredibly hungry as it was already late! On arrival we were told they were running behind and so we would need to get a drink at the bar first, which was initially understandable as it was a busy night. Unfortunately, this ended up being about an hour wait, not being seated until 22:10! Throughout our wait, we hadn’t been updated or tended to at all and so the whole service felt cold and uncaring. Naturally, we were now starving but decided to stick it out because we didn’t have any other options. We had assumed that because it was now over an hour after our reservation, they would tend to us quickly. Unfortunately, we were wrong and didn’t receive any communication or service for the next 25 minutes. Realising that there was no way we were going to be eating, or even talking to a member of staff any time soon, we bailed home and ordered a Chinese 🤣 To be busy on Valentines is completely understandable, but to have no service for an hour and a half after arriving on time and offered nothing as courtesy, never mind any empathy from the staff, is unacceptable and poor management. We trusted the Botanist for a lovely evening and unfortunately had our plans ruined. £30 spent on 2 Ubers, 2 glasses of white wine and an incredibly disappointing evening 😕

I entered this restaurant at 20:20 (14.2.25). A woman wearing a grey cardigan and leather pants, was very rude and unwelcoming. I had a table booked for 20:30 . She told me to wait until 20:30. She didn't even tell me to enjoy a drink at the bar. I waited until 20:50 and I got zero service. I walked out. Terrible experience.... will never return

Unfortunately, and £300 lighter, it's NOT a good experience. Downstairs towards toilet area sewage smell, really bad that's before you get to the toilets by pool tables. The table we had we had to clean as there was food stuck to it and glass rings on the table top. Most came off when we cleaned, and the cutlery box checked your area first. They didn't have Coke Cola, what the heck, and quite few of the cocktails you couldn't have due to the fact they did not have the ingredients. My food had mention of the power of the heat from the species used on the bravas said spicy but not how hot spicy couldn't eat it. Staff tried their best, but owners manager sort it out and were beware they automatically put service charge one, they did mine £29.17 🤔 didn't mention they had. So won't be going g back lot of expense cocktails not cheap, food not cheap bit of a make over be nice, like the type of vibe they had but clean it up looks tired but don't loose the atmosphere of the decor.

Perfectly OK food, but too expensive compared to other places in the city. Poor acoustics. And rather a shame that the waiter himself tipped 10 percent into the tip.

Booked Work Christmas Party here for 12 people, booked well in advance with orders taken before, weren't seated for an hour after our booked time and so busy had to stand in the cold outside, when were were finally seated we had to lay our own table. Food was promised shortly afterwards, 2.5 hours later we walked out due to no food. Management hid away and we had to seek them out and chase constantly. What you did deliver for starters was cold and inedible and left I reached out by letter - no responce I reached out on social media (X) - no responce I would never go to this restaurant again or put my trust in the business to serve other local businesses as you ruined our Christmas party

Fantastic pub! We loved going to meet up with friends here. Service first class, food amazing and an amazing location tucked on the canal. The pictures don't do it justice. We will definitely be returning and highly recommend!

After a poor start with other servers Daniel saved our experience at The Botanist. Finding us a better table and giving us excellent service throughout. He deserves praise and a raise!

Visited recently with colleagues. Considering it was a pre booking they ran out of a few things on the day and appeared to mix up some orders. The table we were given was in a dark dingy corner not very accesible or inclusive for a big group of people, and despite other table options there appeared to be a massive reluctance from management or staff to try and help us . The food itself was very mediocore with the worst christmas roast ever. The pigs in blankets looked as though they had just left the pig and the overall food lacked taste or substance. Irrespective of the festive season, being busy and under pressure; I won't ever return, nor reccomend either

The Botanist has always been one of our favourite chains, and we’ve enjoyed visiting our local branch many times. Unfortunately, this location was an absolute letdown. When we arrived, the restaurant was nearly empty, with only 3 or 4 other tables occupied. Naturally, we expected quick service. However, this couldn’t have been further from reality. The staff were often seen standing by the kitchen window chatting, yet very little food was being brought out. After an excruciating wait of about 1 hour and 30 minutes, our main courses finally arrived. By then, we were left rushing through our meals as we had a show to catch at Symphony Hall, which, luckily, was just down the road. Had we checked the reviews here beforehand, we would have thought twice about dining at this branch. Such a disappointing experience compared to the excellent service and food we’ve come to expect from The Botanist elsewhere.

Had a lovely Sunday roast here today with my daughter before going to a concert at Symphony Hall. I had the belly pork, she had the chicken, and both were delicious and came with a selection of really fresh vegetables, roast potatoes, yorkshire pudding and a little jug of gravy. We ordered cauliflower cheese and pigs in blankets as additional sides which were also very tasty. Service was quick and friendly too.

Went here on Saturday night with a 7pm booking. Atmosphere was amazing quite busy but not rammed. Seated right away amazing food good drinks fair prices. Only reason I didn’t give it a full 5 stars is because we wanted to stay for a few hours after eating end enjoy the live music but the band that were on were awful so sadly we left straight after we finished eating. Definitely worth going to though will def be going back again in the new year

A lovely server called Benjamin went above and beyond and helped my mum who had a leg injury by walked her all the way to her car.

Our group of 4 slightly senior folk were very well served here. The speciality kebabs were especially tasty. In particular, our very charming server looked after us not only efficiently, but also with friendliness and beguiling humour. She made our pre Christmas reunion lunch a joy.

Terrible service. Two hours after lunch booking time and still no food. Staff unaware and uninterested. Do not go to the Botanist.

High praises to the gorgeous young lady (I didn’t get her name, but I think she was the manager) 😊 This is what happened: Group booking, festive menu, only one vegan main, which I couldn’t eat due to ingredients which are not compatible with my food intolerances… But! I was truly impressed by the patience and kindness of the manager! I tried to email the venue starting eight days before to avoid any food drama at the table in front of everybody, but the response was extremely poor to non-existent. Talking to them on the phone was impossible, as the automated service only makes you choose between making a booking or cancelling one - no chance to speak to a human being - and that’s why I then tried with the emails. Six emails later, nothing was resolved - and no one at the venue knew anything about my dietary requirements, which I tried to advise of starting on Dec 5th (dinner was yesterday on Dec 12th). The only half reply I got out of those emails was from another manager who couldn’t even spell his name correctly (apparently his name is Vlad but he signed himself as Vald at the end of his unhelpful email)… She was brilliant though, she sorted me out eventually and with a smile on her face - without making me feel uncomfortable - which was extremely appreciated! 🥰 I don’t know her name, but I would like to express my sincere gratitude to her and to the chefs as, against all odds, I actually managed to have an amazing dinner!!! 😍

Arrived for a work Christmas lunch at 12.45pm, ordered drinks at 1pm, ordered food at 1.10pm. After chasing and chasing for where are starters were, food arrived at 2.05pm. Starters on the Christmas set menu are a sharing platter (no other options) with the generous ‘one of each item’ on offer. So 1 hr 20 mins after arrival, we received one single pig in blanket, a single piece of chicken, a quarter of a tiny Camembert and a dollop of humous. Two of our guests had to cancel mains and leave because they had to get back to work. By 3pm, after chasing and chasing again, and 15 mins after the end of our booking, no sign of mains. We were told ‘kitchen said it’ll be a 5-10 min longer wait but I’d take that with a pinch of salt because it’ll probably be longer’. We said call a manager over and cancel the lot because we had to get back to work - I don’t think expecting to have received mains from a SET MENU after 2 hours is exactly an unreasonable request. Waitress was hardly apologetic with manager even less so, justifying the situation by saying ‘well other tables have had to wait 2 and a half hours’. Seems like they think this kind of wait time (with no previous warning of the wait time) is deemed acceptable. So take this as a warning - only bother booking if you’ve got 3-4 hours to wait for basic food and even less than basic customer service.

Exquisite venue. Very busy with Christmas diners when we went but the kitchen were very accommodating and were happy for us to order from the standard menu. Food was very nice and the service staff kept us fueled with booze while we waited.

Had a Christmas dinner at the Botanist when we had to deal with lots of cancellations and lateness, however the stuff has been brilliant and understandable. Everyone was lovely and always there to help. Thank you for a cosy night!

Food was cold (actually frozen in the middle!), and one colleagues food was so late everyone else had finished. Lovely setting but the food was a let down.

20 of us for a work Christmas party, supposedly for 7pm. Starters arrived at 8pm and were quite nice, but after a lot of chasing the mains didn't arrive till 9:30, by which time half the party had given up and left. They were the lucky ones. The "famous hanging turkey kebabs" were burnt but also cold, the veg was rock hard and also cold. Some people had the sea bass which looked like it had been pan-fried for half an hour. £40 a head for that. I hope we got a full refund.

I booked the Christmas 3 course dinner on October 3rd. The above booking was for yesterday (30th November) for 9 people at 8.30-10.45pm. On the evening of the meal, I received a call at 8.08pm saying that service was running late and to arrive 8.45-9pm. Upon arriving at the venue at 8.50pm we were told that our table still was not ready. I asked to speak to the duty manager. Amber, suggested waiting upstairs and arranged complimentary drinks.  She mentioned that she was going to see if it was possible to give us the private seating area.  After waiting again were finally seated approx an hour after booking time.We ordered drinks and asked for starters to be served immediately due to the time and how late it was. We then waited a further 50 minutes for starters to arrive.   At 22.50pm we still had not received our main ,which is totally unacceptable.  We made the decision to leave without receiving our 2 other courses.  This was our annual get together,  our party consisted of people travelling from London and other parts of the UK, it is unfathomable that a pre booked 20.30pm booking ,  we still did not have our mains by 22 50pm.  The manager (Amber)thought it was fit to give us complementary prosecco,  for the wait, which we declined. This was not a reasonable suggestion, to supply us with 'more alcohol ', what we needed was food. No attempt to offer/supply us with food, etc starter platters,  bowls of chips,  nothing. We ended up leaving hungry and extremely disappointed and dissastified . I emailed the venue three days ago to share my concerns but no acknowledgement as of yet.

Booked a table for 6 at 7pm, ordered food at 7:15pm and we had to leave after 2 hrs as food hadn’t arrived, at no point did any staff members tell us there was a delay with the food, it was an awful experience, I wouldn’t want to book a works christmas party here with the experience we had, we left hungry and frustrated. This is the worst experience i have ever had at a restaurant. The manager did say they were busy as had new staff but this isn’t acceptable after 2 hrs of no communication, the food looks nice if it ever gets served to you.

Went to the Botanist last night for a meal with some friends. It was a lovely atmosphere and the live singer was amazing. Customer service was great and I really enjoyed the food. It was my first time at the Botanist, but I will definitely be returning. The location on the canal is so pretty. Perfect place for a relaxing meal away from the Friday night chaos of Broad Street.

Went for my birthday as previously ate at another Botanist and great experience.......not this time! The place is beautiful but we were in the pergola, freezing cold and the noise was incredible the waitress couldnt hear us order. 90 minute time slot still waiting for food after 60 minutes which we had to chase. Sent the Sea Bass back half a piece looked like it been deep fried rock hard, kebab small and greasey, chips and onion tasted of chip oil. Wish we had taken photos. The waitresses were lovely and very apologetic, we did have the sea bass and drinks taken off our bill but to be honest i would have preferred and lovely quality meal and paid full price.

Despite the efforts of our waiting staff we were badly let down. We waited 90 minutes for the first food to arrive at our table. Tasty but waay too late. There appeared to be a meltdown between the kitchen and front of house staff. We weren't the only table affected. Cannot recommend this place. It was a shambles.

been here with work for meals and beers - very popular place with the close by offices. Beers brewed on premises (lager types) with two floors to drink in. Nice views over the canal marina from the outside balcony.

Absolutely loved it here, came on a work dinner and they managed to cater effectively for a huge group of us. The food was a good standard and the drink choices were decent but the atmosphere and service make it worth the visit, such a pretty spot all lit up tastefully at night.
