A simply wonderful little pub, friendly and full of atmosphere. The Sunday roasts are huge portions — really generous! — and the desserts: wow! The staff were incredibly helpful; first class service. A real gem of a pub. (And no loud music; another plus). Make sure you say hello to the resident tortoise.

We have always had great food when visiting here in the past but this Sunday lunch wasn't so good. It gave us both diarrhoea when this was the only food we ate that day. The veg was well undercooked; roast parsnips and potatoes had been reheated in a deep fat fryer - my boyfriend is a chef so was quite sure this was how they were reheated. Such a shame as loads of them. The gravy was very watery and tasteless. Hardly any cheesy taste in the cauliflower cheese. The meat wasn't hot. The crackling was excellent though. Overall, very disappointed as this was a treat.

Came for Sunday lunch today after being recommended by my brother. Absolutely fantastic. My husband and I both ordered the big plates. One of the best roast dinners I've had. Everything was perfectly cooked and there was plenty of it. The waitress was very lovely, checking our food was ok, asking if we would like more of anything. We had pudding, again equally tasty and fresh. Such fantastic value and a wonderful experience all round.

The service here was amazing. We walked 30 mins in the rain to get to the pub. They kindly opened early for us so that we could get some cover from the down pour! We were only meant to stay for a drink but the hosts were so lovely that we decided to book for 14 people to eat lunch there the next day. The food, service and atmosphere was superb. Thank you for having us and for being so accommodating, we very much enjoyed. Oh and thanks again for lending us a couple of board games ;) Until next time! The Barnett’s, Morrisons and Howard x

Couldn't believe our luck when we arrived at such a lovely pub/restaurant especially that it's dog friendly! A gorgeous family Sunday lunch, so close to Swindon but you feel like you're in the middle of nowhere! The Calley arms has struck an excellent balance between filling the pub without overfilling, maintaining a warm and pleasant atmosphere, good atmosphere but a decent amount of space between the tables. We had a Pig Plates; generous portions of beef, pork and chicken, two Yorkshire puddings, 2 pigs in blankets and stuffing. The meat was delicious, flavourful and tender, with good gravy (and more supplied quickly when requested). The sides were equally plentiful; carrots, peas, broccoli, cheesy leeks, roast potatoes and parsnips. The vegetarian in the group was equally impressed with their vegetarian Wellington and had their own vegetarian gravy. The child with us certainly appreciated access to some lovely quiet, table top toys that kept them amused whilst the adults ate. Sadly we were all too full for a dessert! We will definitely return!

I don’t normally respond to these sort of reviews, .. however on this occasion I will . I am the said landlady having a bad day !!! It was explained to you we had two big bookings coming in . We had only one person in the kitchen and one floater. However that wasn’t good enough for you !!! You stated that you had frequented us , but somehow not managed to put anything positive about those occasions!!! If you think I’m going to except my waitress/ friend Returning go the kitchen in that state , think again . Our Waitress has worked here for four years , and is brilliant, polite and courteous, and I’ve never seen her in that upset !!!! Quite frankly I’m glad I told you to leave and that you weren’t welcome here again . My bad day started with you and ended with you .

Terrible service, cold food whole experience disappointing, Rude rude, rude small angry man serving who clearly hates his hob and his customers. Twice during the meal he brought the cutlery out after the food was placed on the table and the food was not served at the same time. There were only two of us and the pub was quiet! Sub standard food, sub standard service and zero onsideration given when given feedback (which I asked him if he wanted and he welcomed!) Instead of any genuine acknowledgement or a sincere apology, I was given a list of excuses and then told the meal would not be charged for! How to tell me you messed up without telling me you messed up! Apparently the chef has put his back out, the servers wife had stepped in to cook, they had been struggling there for four years yet normally get rave reviews! Funny then that the first three reviews I see on opening trip advisor were all bad ones! I had never stepped foot in this pub before and I wouldn't again if you paid me, absolutely disgusting customer service, the guy clearly hates his job and should probably consider a career change, avoid at all costs!

This is a lovely looking pub with great amenities but unfortunately the food and service let it down. The food was very average and took a long time to arrive. At the bar there is a sign stating that we should be patient as the food is freshly made to order (unlikely as we were having Sunday roast), but even so, the wait was ridiculous, especially given we had ordered a few days in advance, as requested by the kitchen. We all received our food at different times, with no explanation or apology given. Additionally when ordering a second glass of red wine, it took the rather miserable looking bar man, who had been standing around not doing very much at all, 45 minutes to come and tell me that all of the red wine had run out with only white or rose left. Rather disappointing given it was only about 2pm. Coffees also took ages to arrive. We won’t be going back.

I booked a table for Sunday lunch for my family - a group of 12. We were asked to preorder in advance, which we did and we hoped this would have a positive impact on the speed of service. Unfortunately, it did not. The pub itself is beautiful and the facilities were great. At the start of the meal, service was brilliant and we were all impressed and eagerly awaiting our food. We waited a long time for our starters, despite being the first sitting and table being served of the day - we did however remain optimistic and hoped this would improve. The starters, however, were tasty and well presented - this was the highlight of the meal, as it very quickly went downhill after this. We then waited a while for two children’s meals, followed by another wait for any adult meals to join. The adult meals came out with such long gaps in between that we each had to start eating before our food went cold. The ‘Calley Big Plate’ was advertised as having two Yorkshire puddings and pigs in blankets, however when these eventually arrived they only had one of each on. Although there was still plenty of food, it was not as advertised. Three of the group finally received their lamb roast dinners, and all commented on how chewy the meat was. I had pre-ordered a dairy free beef roast dinner as I am allergic to milk, and I had to wait at least 15 minutes more than the last meal to arrive to have mine. I was told that I could only have the peas and cabbage from the shared vegetables, despite having preordered and highlighting my allergy beforehand, and my husband asking if I could have some carrots and swede made for me. When my beef finally arrived (and most of my family had finished their own meals by this point), I had a children’s sized plate with some extremely gristly beef, a couple of parsnips, a stuffing ball and one roast potato. At this point I was quite frustrated by my lack of options so questioned why I only had one roast potato, to which the waitress looked very puzzled and laughed at me before walking off to the kitchen and eventually reappearing with some additional, overcooked potatoes. I like a joke and a laugh as much as the next person, but I think I missed the joke, maybe as I was so focused on the extremely disappointing food and service. Overall, the entire meal was completely underwhelming, which is such a shame as it was a celebration of my mother in law’s 80th birthday - one she certainly won’t forget, but unfortunately for all the wrong reasons. I read such positive reviews before booking this pub but certainly wouldn’t recommend it to anyone based on our experience. I am not one to leave negative reviews but felt I should so that other customers don’t have the same poor experience as we did. I really hope this review is taken on board and improvements are made as the pub itself has potential to be amazing.

We are local (Chiseldon), and had my wife's parents down so decided to book a table at the Calley....keeping it local! We have been to the Calley quite a few times and it's always been good. Unfortunately you let us down Calley arms.....very disappointed. First off, for a Friday night quite a few of the menu options were not available. We had starters and these were not cleared away, before the main courses arrived. When it was time for the main courses, one arrived, but the others were a good 5 minutes later. To make matters worse, the curry was only warm. This was taken back and came out hot. But it was not up to normal taste and standard to be honest. And the lasagne, even though tasted quite nice was not that hot either. Something didn't seem right at the Calley Arms, the excuse of 'We are short staffed' was said, but seeing as the pub was very quiet (only us 4 and another table of 2 eating!), bit of a lame excuse I'm afraid. We last ate in the Calley a few weeks ago for Sunday lunch and it was really good, but I'm hoping tonight was a one off. Calley Arms, hopefully this was a one off and when we come back things will be different. We decided to stay local as you have to support the local community, but we feel let down.

Despite making a booking, directed to a table then forgotten about. Asked a female who wasn't from behind the bar if we could have some menus, she snapped "have you made a booking" to which I replied we had and where we were sitting. Eventually one of the bar staff came and took our order, only ordered two starters and four main courses. The starters arrived and were enjoyed, their plates were cleared after a while and then we sat and waited for the main courses to arrive - a very long wait and they weren't busy, a table came in after us and were served their food, if it had been just us I would have said something but we were very patient and polite. Our food eventually arrived one and half hours after the starters!!! These were everyday items from their menu. WE WILL NOT BE BACK.

My husband and I were in Swindon for work and wanted to have a pub meal, but where to go? So many choices. We eventually opted for a place in the countryside that had great reviews. On a Tuesday evening, there weren’t many customers, but the atmosphere was warm and welcoming and the whole room had a cosy feeling to it.We sat near the fireplace as it was quite cold that night, and we couldn’t help but notice the sign which stated that all the food was prepared to order. Good sign. I ordered the lamb shank, my husband the hamburger. After a short wait, two amazing main dishes were delivered: the lamb shank had a generous serving of the creamiest mash potato, lots of fresh veggies, and minted gravy (a delicious accompaniment for the tender meat, falling off the bone). The cheese and bacon burger was served inside a toasted brioche bun, with tomatoes and lettuce, a freshly made, delicious coleslaw, beer batter onion rings and fries. My husband was very impressed with the quality and amazing flavour of each ingredient, everything was fresh and beautifully tasty. We followed with a rhubarb crumble with icecream, which was a very generous serving and left us very satisfied. After dinner the lovely landlord put more wood in the fireplace, and we could sit on the comfy sofa with our feet up, watching a football match on telly. We really felt at home and we could totally relax and unwind, after having had a delicious meal. This lovely country pub is highly recommended!

Bar staff were good and so was the wood burner......Although the lighting was far to bright and harsh, the table was sticky and really needed a good clean. The 6X wasn’t a good pint and was replaced when asked although I’ve had much better elsewhere. The 6X battered cod was good but the tartare sauce had far to much garlic in it. The burger and fries were average but the coleslaw was sloppy and swimming in mayonnaise.

I wouldn't recommend this place for a party or large booking. The main courses came out over almost a 2 hour window. Some people had left for the evening before others had even seen their dinner. I have visited The Calley Arms several times over the past few months; most recently a couple of weeks ago on a girly night out. I have visited with my daughter, with some friends, with my partner and on my own with my dog. The pub looks SO much better since its makeover; the new managers are very good and all the staff I have encountered have been friendly and helpful. The pub is extremely dog friendly, has a wide range of drinks available and the food is good and well priced. I will definitely be visiting again and am looking forward to sampling the Sunday roast soon.

I haven't been here for many years as the last visit was very disappointing. However, it has changed hands and they have made some much needed renovations which are a huge improvement! I had lamb shank with mashed potatoes and veg and it was absolutely delicious and reasonably priced too. Although it is off the beaten track, it is worth a visit and you will get a warm welcome as the staff are lovely.

A group of us decide to stop and have Sunday lunch after a run in the surrounding countryside, it's an idyllic country pub, with friendly staff. The Sunday dinners are reasonably priced and were very tasty (I had the lamb) the only shame o felt was the portion Size, plenty of meat and a fair amount of Veg but only 3 small roast potatoes and a small Yorkshire. That aside I couldn't fault it, managed a dessert after which was good, but unlike me after a Sunday roast, usually I can't move!

Heard that this pub was Dog Friendly so took a look and was not disappointed. Stayed and had couple of drinks and Dinner. Food was fine and not badly priced and staff made you feel welcome, including the Dog, with ample supply of biscuits. Nice views of surrounding countryside and outside seating .

At last the Calley has been brought into the 21st Century. New decor and new people. Compared to the past great service and a brand new EPOS system that makes service so much better and quicker.

Can't comment on the food. We had to give up after waiting pretty much an hour for some chips and leave without eating. We had asked after 40 mins and were told the food was coming which was evidently not the case. It was even more frustrating as we saw food taken to tables of people who had arrived after we had ordered. To add to the whole debacle I know have to wait for a refund for the food that we didn't receive. Very poor service.

Have never eaten here but personally but have never heard a bad word. Lovely atmosphere. Playing all sports, pool tables and dart boards available. Children and dogs welcome. Live music on occasion. Great time had with every visit.
