The Caley Sample Room in Edinburgh, City of

First day of our trip we came in this little gem. The blond curly lady(didn't get her name) was amazing. Very friendly and kind, very good service and awesome sence of humor. We left with a smile. Came in the 2nd day, she even remembered what we had for drinks before,(pointing me when i was going at the bar with the quote "Punk IPA") just amazing. If i have the option I will come again for sure.

Fuimos por una hamburguesa y cerveza antes del partido y quedé impresionado con todo, aparte de lo frío que estaba el lugar.

Cena de cumpleaños anoche temprano por la noche, cuatro de nosotros más mi perro (¡siempre su propio tazón de agua y tratado como cualquier cliente humano!) Todos los demás tenían una variación en las hamburguesas que recibieron mucho, y mi bistec se hizo muy bien y nuestro camarero pudo adaptar mi deseo de no tener papas fritas, ofreciendo papas hervidas y una salsa de pimienta de cortesía (para la espera adicional de las papas ) en su lugar. Como era temprano, éramos uno de los pocos comensales para empezar, pero al final se estaba recuperando un poco y el ambiente era agradable. El servicio fue estupendo, sin duda volveremos de nuevo.

Dado que acabamos de mudarnos por el camino, se esperaba que pasáramos algunas noches en este restaurante local, sin embargo, dada la calidad de las comidas en nuestra primera visita, creo que lo reconsideraremos. We had no reservation and received a warm welcome in this cosy friendly place. The service was good and we both had a fab vegetarian chilli and the house red. What's not to like.

Visité con un grupo de amigos en Edimburgo para el rugby. Excelente ubicación en camino a Murrayfield. Buen ambiente, baños limpios y nos encantaron los urinarios de barril de cerveza? Gran selección de cervezas y comida. La comida era de excelente calidad ya un precio razonable. El servicio fue rápido y bien educado. Definitivamente volveremos.

We recently moved to the area and decided on our first evening in the new flat to visit our new local - The Caley Sample Room. First impression was good. It's a well presented, clean and attractive establishment with a friendly welcome. It was also nice to be able to order a non alcoholic beer, a trend that hopefully endures and expands in UK pubs.

Vine aquí esta noche con mi novio y mi padre para una cena temprana. He estado una vez hace años y estaba bien, pero creo que la propiedad ha cambiado desde entonces. A nuestra llegada, éramos los únicos clientes que se esperaba debido a la hora temprana, sin embargo, la mayoría de las mesas se reservaron para la prueba del pub más tarde. Excellent local meal. Fish and chips were deliciós. They give us a taste of four local beers to choose. IT was a grat idea!

El personal del bar era muy eficiente y acogedor, el personal de la mesa era muy agradable y no nos apuró a pesar de que estaba muy ocupado después del Welsh Six Nations Match. El menú era extenso y la comida era fantástica. Este tiene que ser el lugar al que iremos en el futuro para nosotros sin ninguna duda.

Buena cerveza El personal es servicial. Realmente terrible experiencia con clientela no local. Fui a ver los partidos de las seis naciones el sábado. El lugar fue embestido y 2 grupos separados de personas sentadas en mesas se negaron a permitirnos dejar nuestras bebidas en su mesa. Luego se quejaron de que no podían ver la pantalla y esperaban que nos moviéramos. A propósito, tiraron un chorro de agua que mi esposa tenía y se negaron a pedir disculpas. Qué montón de campesinos.

A friend had recommended this restaurant for a great varied menu and being dog friendly.

The beer here is always great, but now you can get a wee steak pie and an tasty ale for £6! Absolutely brilliant, rescued me big time.

Bistro bar offers wide range of food and drinks, particularly if you fancy a burger with a difference as some unique combinations on offer. On our visit the staff were very friendly, helpful and efficient and let down slightly by the food and drink offering where despite having an extensive selection of both the quality was at best average; starter was over cooked and a normally reliable cask ale was served at the wrong temperature. Tip - can get busy at weekend particularly if football or rugby on nearby so booking ahead maybe best.

Excellent service, hearty home-made food and a good selection of beers. The best veggie burger I have ever had!

Poor breakfast. Waited nearly 1 hour. Black pudding and sausage under cooked. Chips that came with veggie burger over salted. We had been looking forward to visiting, disappointing.

Despite having a decent selection of beers and wines, and nice staff, I’ve now eaten here three times in the past year and the food, particularly at the price, has on each occasion been very disappointingly below par. I will not eat here again.

Lovely atmosphere and fab service for a large party but the roast was nothing to write home about and overpriced at £14.50. Would have been really nice to have some steamed veggies as well as the small spoonful of roast veggies that were on the plate. Everything was tasty but it was a shame that the portion sizes didn't match the price.

The Caley Sample Room er en traditionel Skotsk pub med servering. Restauranten/pub ligner hvad man forventer af sådant et sted. Ikke meget overraskelse, dog bortset fra toiletterne, hvor piskummer er lavet som udskårne ølankre. Øllet er godt og varieret, maden er absolut gennemsnitlig, og meget af det har været en tur i ‘ønskebrønden’, som sjældent gør en større smagsoplevelse ud af maden. Dog vinder stedet ved serveringen. Hugo hed tjeneren, som ligner telegrafisten, der er taget ud af Lucky Luke. Han var et absolut plus for besøget, og for ham får stedet vores anmeldelsesroser.

Hyggelig personale og god mat til en grei pris. Holder det. Blå blå blå hundre ord mat blir ikke bedre med 100 ord.

Llamado para un té temprano ya que este es nuestro local. Mi marido tenía una hamburguesa, que estaba bien, pero las patatas fritas estaban muy pasada. Tuve costillas de cordero que eran sabrosas aunque un poco grasosas. El puré fue muy bueno, pero no puedo entender por qué tenía una enorme ensalada con puré y puré. Esta barra se usa para ofrecer una gran carrera a mitad de semana a un precio excelente. Simplemente parece haber perdido su camino con un menú aburrido y una lista de bocadillos de bar fritos. Visitamos el Caley muestra espacio para el brunch del domingo con un grupo de 4. Tres de nosotros fuimos para el desayuno escocés que era realmente encantadora, agradable y contundente con una buena variedad de comida en el plato. Otro miembro del grupo tenía pancakes con sirope de arce y bacon y dijo el tocino podría haber sido preparado un poco más, pero en general disfruté realmente. Todos teníamos café y zumo y la factura era de 50 libras, que nos pareció razonable para lo que teníamos. El pub en sí está bien decorado y tiene un ambiente agradable, acogedor. El miembro del personal que estaba trabajando era encantador y atento. Sin duda recomendaría para el desayuno/almuerzo.

Yo vine temprano en la tarde del sábado para el brunch para ponerse al día con una pal, lugar estaba muerto tranquilo! Ambos tuvimos la tostada avo con tocino y halloumi, oh mis días fue increíble! Nuestro camarero era muy bonito, no su nombre, pero ella era la única chica que sirve. Buena charla, relajado, sin duda lo recomendaría!

Encontré este lugar cerca de nuestra cama y desayuno de la Ciudad Vieja al oeste de Edimburgo. Realmente disfrutamos del ambiente, el servicio, la cerveza y la comida. Nuestro camarero se tomó el tiempo para discutir los grifos conmigo y llevar muestras hasta que encontré lo que quería. Él era muy atento pero también nos dio tiempo para disfrutar de nuestra noche, comprobando con nosotros cada vez antes de seguir con la comida.

Estaba caliente y tenía una buena cerveza que no era demasiado revestimiento pesado. Mi marido tenía la mejillones, que disfrutó. Tuvimos un par de cervezas. El camarero era maravilloso, permitiéndonos probar tres tipos diferentes de cervezas antes elegimos lo que queríamos una pinta de. Fue bien y lo recomiendo.

Cinco de nosotros fuimos a tomar algo después del trabajo. Hay un restaurante a la carta y un menú de bar. Yo tenía la principal que era servido con berenjenas cuscús y rocket, era delicioso y ligero. Desierto era mango y parfait de vainilla servidos con frutas en dados. Tranquilo en una noche de miércoles, pero suficiente gente para un buen ambiente. Este bar da perros. Muy buena y de precio razonable. Bien merece una visita.

The staff were more concerned with talking to each other than the customers and the ingredients tasted like they came from the local supermarket. Far better options in the area. Avoid.

The look looks pretty nice, was told the food wasn't the best that night, from a member of staff, no manager to be seen and wasn't even offered a discount on bill after sending my food back. 100% wont be back to this venue

Went to The Caley Sample Room before watching a game at Myreside Stadium great find staff were really friendly and both the food and drinks were superb , would thoroughly recommend a visit.

Dropping children off locally for the start of the new University term. We had a meal at the Caley Sample Room. Food was excellent, this being the dead period after Xmas & New Year, ther were only another tow tables in. Service was excellent and good value. I would recommend.

It was the annual Christmas night out for Edinburgh area Queen of the South supporters. We had been her either 2 or 3 years ago and it was excellent.

Nice spot to drink with friends. Especially the specials on Tuesday (Burger deal) and Thursday (Steak Deal with a bottle of wine).

I booked a table for six before the match at Murrayfield- a mixture of clients , family and friends. I’d heard that there have been a few reservations mix ups at the Caley so I double checked last week. They had me down as a two for some reason but then changed it to 6. I arrived early and my fears were realised- they hadn’t allocated a table for us but as I was first in, they put me on a tall table. Not ideal but not the end of the world. Scotland were at Murrayfield and Hearts were at Tynecastle so it was always going to be very busy. Initially there were simply not enough staff on but after midday, more arrived. All were pleasant but most were incredibly inexperienced. A reduced menu was put in operation (understandable but no one advised us) and the brunch offer was abandoned). Food service was generally shambolic and I had to go the bar on numerous occasions to prompt our order. They seemed to struggle big time. They struggled to get the balance with serving food in a packed bar.

First, unlike so many places in Scotland, this restaurant has some good beers and a good choice particularly if you are a traditional bitter drinker who doesn't just want a selection of blond beers. Secondly the food was very good but was probably not appreciated as much as it should have been because we had visited Tom Kitchin's restaurant the night before followed by a significant number of beers and whiskeys. Of course none of us were hungover as we sat down bleary eyed after a 6 mile walk but then we are wonderful liars. We chose a selection of foods which started with two sharing platters for 5 of us. We had two because we were advised that one would not be enough, one was cold meats and pickles and the other was cheese. They lied, there was too much but they were excellent. Fish and chips and lamb followed and again both were good but by now, food exhaustion was setting in and we crawled out of the restaurant into a waiting taxi to return us to the station. The service was a little slow but I think new staff were on duty but all were very pleasant. Wine was average but overall cost was reasonable. We would definitely return if we are in Edinburgh again but without the hangover from the night before!!

Absolute rubbish. Poor service and very ordinary food. Special board was a huge let down. Will not be back

A regular eating spot when visiting friends in Edinburgh. Always enjoy the food, drinks and the atmosphere here. Most recent visit proved no exception. Good quality pub foor and plenty of it. Good service and very good value.Recommended.

We visited the sample room in the late spring after just coming upon it later in the evening on our first night in town. I have to say, we were very pleasantly surprised and had a much needed home-cooked quality meal after traveling for almost 2 days. I loved the mint mushy peas to DEATH and my SO saw another table get a chocolate dessert pudding, looked at me and said "we're getting that". Needless to say, I wrestled about one bite away from him. I also had a wonderful cup of tea before leaving and the boyfriend had a nice pint for a nightcap. Overall I don't think we could have found a nicer place. It was off the beaten path, which is great if you're looking for something just a bit more restful, but it wasn't deserted either. Just a very relaxing, laid-back welcoming vibe with great, non-fussy food!

Went here for lunch as our original choice was unavailable due to kitchen refurbishment. Bar was quiet when we arrived so service was good. Food was typical bar food, burger, fish and chips. However really tasty and fair sized portions. Particularly enjoyed beetroot coleslaw. Drinks were also good with a great selection of wines and beers.

We got the impression that our server was new. She made quite a few mistakes with the order, but the barmen were really great and took up the slack. The food was quite good, and we were too stuffed to finish our desserts.The only real complaint was that it was so hot in the dining room that we had to step outside to cool off between courses.Very friendly, welcoming atmosphere.

Myself & 3 friends went here for Brunch today, and it really wasn't great. I had the full Scottish breakfast, poached egg was more like a hard boiled egg and I was missing the bacon. My friend had eggs florentine, her eggs were also hard boiled, she complained about this and it was taken away for some fresh eggs to be made, the 2nd lot came and this time her eggs were RAW. This really is not acceptable at all. We waited over 1 hour for her 3rd lot to come! I don't understand how difficult it was for the chef to make a poached egg, the place wasn't that busy so he had plenty time to perfect it. Staff didn't really seem concerned about the issues, must be a regular occurrence. Her meal was of course free but she didn't enjoy it as it was such a long wait. Don't think we will be brunching there again.. Also the lattes were freezing cold!

The four of us had a lovely meal here and would highly recommend it. Very reasonably priced too. Great atmosphere

Visited for a drink before the Saturday afternoon football a few months ago. Really great atmosphere, service was with a smile and pretty good despite it getting busy. Didn't eat this time although the fish stew I had previously was just a treat. Clean, contemporary surroundings and a happy clientele makes for a nice day out.

Do love a bar who has Hop House on tap. Lots of other not too crafty beers on tap. Frat pre game place for a pint.

Bit of a gastro pub, in the 'bare floorboards' style.None of the menu was flashy, but it had some interesting dishes mixed in with more traditional ones.Real ale was mainly IPA's and light ales (it is Scotland), but they also have Guinness for those who like a firmer taste to their beer.

The food was very good, delicious, we had 28 days steak, wow, recommend and to not forget the goat cheese, was super!On what we was disappointed and we didn't see that coming: the girl with long and red hair, our waitress, in one moment she need it to change the menu (from the big black board from the wall) with the chef (I guess was him, looks like), and what she did? She step on one chair and then on the lovely table (the table that is for 6 persons and is exactly under the big black board) with her very nice shoes...We was f@@@ing shock! People they eat there!!! I ask kindly the manager, or the managing director to check the CCTV, was around 2:30 PM on 07.07.2017 (this if you don't believe).That was very ugly from her side, with us near the table really? We like the place, is close to us, we enjoy the food and drinks there.

Very noisy with piped music way too loud. Mediocre service and limited menu. Slightly better at the bar with a good variety of ales, but not really welcoming staff. It's probably best to go somewhere else to spend your money...

We visited for dinner early evening on Friday. I ordered 'traditional fish and chips' from the menu. Although it was pleasant enough I wouldn't have described it as 'traditional' there was two fish goujons on top of mushy pea purée along with a basket of skinny fries.

You are always worried when a place you like is bought and then refurbished and you think it will never be he same again, and it isn't but in this case in good way/ I can't remember what it used to be like.After my third visit I thought I should add a review - as he food quality is consistently good.Great beers - nearly always 6 real ales of different strengths a good standard menu and great specials. Dog friendly with water and snacks provided for them, there were two other dogs for Dougall to meet and they were all well behaved. The Sunday roast was excellent and there was enough to treat Dougall by adding to his food bowl.This place is well worth the extra time it takes to walk to and if you have a dog you have no excuse not to.

Went for a Sunday relaxed dinner around 6pm and it was a surprise for myself as it had been years since my last visit. Dogs, dog friendly which is amazing!!! Go have a wonderful dinner and take your pooch.Anyway... we were seated quickly with water straight away. Not hovered over by staff and pestered for an order. Menu is exciting and full of amazing food. It's not huge which in some places they are. Just enough I thought. I chose the Caley Burger with the red onion marmalade, when it arrived I honestly did not think I would finish it, but by heck I did. It honestly is one of the best burgers I have tasted and the red onion marmalade was awesome!!!!I even managed the salted caramel tart which was lovely. Not too sweet.My partner enjoyed a couple of glasses of wine, wine list excellent as well and there is a huge beer and spirits choice. I stuck to water as was on call and not fond of fizzy drinks, the staff kept this filled.All in all a wonderful experience, nice and relaxed if any complaint it would just be the music a tad loud for the time of the day but even this was decent choice lol... Go enjoy the Caley Sample Room.

We visited on a Thursday evening in May. It was a nice, chill environment. Had the haggis and the haddock. Very happy with both! Also, good beers on tap. Definitely can recommend!

We came here for an early dinner, and already it was quite crowded. The service was friendly, but not very fast. The menu is rather limited, with rather typical pub food as well as some more upscale choices. All the food we got was very nice, and the portions were large. One of us ordered 2 starters instead of a main, and they were brought with the main courses without problem. The only negative is that it does get rather noisy, making conversation more difficult.

Staff were very friendly. Food was very nice. Not much choice for very young kids.... But they did offer smaller potions on some of the main courses. We went at 8 on a Saturday so had the feel of a busy pub. Ok for older kids, but young ones.

Weekend away in Edinburgh. Visited here for my birthday. The atmosphere was great. The drinks and food very reasonable prices. The starters and the main courses ( there were 4 of us each having something different) were excellent. Service was first class, they even sang happy birthday to me and practically the whole place joined in......thank you. I had a great time

We tried to go for dinner yesterday at 21:10 and they said the kitchen was closed. Several months ago when they changed management we asked when were the opening times for the kitchen as we usually go late for dinner for UK, and they said until 10 pm, but if there's not many people they would close by 21:45. So we were extremely disappointed yesterday when they wouldn't serve food at 21:10. I think the service has gone down since the change of management, which is very upsetting for us as it used to be a great pub near home

Great place if looking for a delicious meal out with the family. Would suggest booking in advance as does get busy especially if football is on or playing at Hearts 5 mins away. Great range on the menu

The restaurant offers a good selection of wine and beer, the food is good to very good and prices are not so high, service is not as good as I would have expected

I used to visit the Caley 3 times a week and loved it but moved away from the area. I took a few friends in on Saturday afternoon. We were well dressed, not drunk and polite. As soon as we walked in I got the impression we were not the kind of clientele they wanted. Fair enough just say so and we would have left but the barman, I think the manager was just downright rude, looked down at us, no smile, no please or thank you and no customer service. This was definitely a case of don't judge a book by its cover as all 9 of us are company directors and we will all be letting our friends, staff and clients about the level of service. I'm not one for leaving reviews like this but I was disgusted. If I found out any of my staff treated a customer the way we were treated they wouldn't be working for me. If the Caley want me to come and discuss this I'll happily pop in.

Not to be beaten...like Vern's team at home. Great service, great food, nice selection, easy access to Murrayfeid and well suited for a post match ale. Wonderful atmosphere, good selection of ale, even the Duechars was tasty.

Had an itison voucher. The bottle of red wine was pleasant and the chefs sampler platter was really good. Saw a cheeseboard being served and it looked fantastic. Best thing is the dog could accompany us. Well done team.

It's taken a little bit of time to get back to its old self but delighted to say our last few visits have seen The Caley once again dishing up great food, great beer, great service and a buzzing atmosphere.

We visited the Caley Sample Room using an Itison voucher and were not disappointed in any way. We had a lovely mixed platter accompanied by a very nice bottle of red wine. Service was excellent - very sociable and attentive barman.Very enjoyable indeed and we will definitely return.

Dreadful experience at the Caley Sample Room on Saturday. Went out for a lunch with friends using vouchers we had bought and the customer service was awful. The Manager was rude, walked away from me while I was trying to reason with her to make our experience more palatable and then did not return to talk but went and sat at the bar, drinking with other customers. I have been to this bar for food and drink previously but have heard it has changed owners. I will not be going back.

Visited here on January 2nd for food. Restaurant was under staffed and food was average. It was absolutely freezing cold too.. nice for a drink but disappointing for food as had to ask for second drinks and when they arrived my meal was done.. shame as I really like the place.

Good to see the old gal get a cost of paint. Feels like a modern Edinburgh bar now.Only complaint is being charged £2 for a small portion of basil pesto on the side of a £10+ sampler board.It was good though. Maybe it contains crack. I understand this is an expensive ingredient.

Fabulous brunch here with family on Sunday January 8th 2017 - everyone was happy but one small complaint - no marmalade or jam for our toast, but other than that it was really good

Have eaten here a couple of times as in walking distance of my daughters flat - the brunch is superb, especially the items you wouldnt normally cook yourself. Sunday lunch lovely and burgers etc all good. Well priced and a nice atmosphere, looking forward to returning soon

Paid £60 for six entry tickets to their New Year's Eve party. Didn't need the tickets as anyone could wander in. The promised music turned out to be an Ed Sheeran wannabe who was more busker than entertainer. The agency bar staff brought in for the night didn't have a clue and we're obviously briefed to serve the owners' mates before anyone else. Felt like we'd gate crashed their private little 'do'. Disappointing because this used to be a great locals bar with friendly willing bar staff but us now just frustratingly not!

Great food, nice atmosphere, lovely decor. Service was a bit slow, had to go to the bar myself a couple of times to order drinks and had to ask at the end for our prosecco that was included otherwise we wouldn't have got it.

We love the decor, the relaxed atmosphere, the drinks selection. However we found the food to be disappointing. Average really, certainly nothing to get excited about. I had the turkey and it was really dry and looked like a readymeal. Just not great my my view. A real shame as we'd love to come regularly.

Firstly i would say is a 'Good' Review but TripAdvisor does not give this option. This was my first visit on a Saturday Afternoon for lunch. I liked the interior decor and there is plenty of space with tables not too close together . We sat at one of the booths near the window opposite the bar . The young male member of staff that served us was polite and helpful when required . We opted for 1 of the moules frites which is served with bread and fries which was plentiful and 1 caley burger with fries with a side of onion rings . There was a bit of a mix up with burger as i asked for any sauces which you could choose from to be served on the side but it was still served with mayonnaise and pickle on burger which had to be sent back.Slight communication but when my burger was returned the same bit of lettuce which was covered in mayonnaise was put back on burger which i had to remove . Overall food was tasty enough and stafff good, toilets were clean and tidy with nice decor. I would return if in the area as not in the city centre.
