Great pub. Fantastic beers, and spot-on service. Engaging and friendly. It's not rocket science. Good beer, good service. 5 stars.

Avoid at all costs! We visited on a Sunday afternoon (4pm) as was staying in the area. We went as family of 5 adults and a 4 month old baby who was fast asleep in her pram. We sat down and one of our group had ordered drinks at the bar when another bar member approached him and asked "do you own the kid?". When he answered yes, we were told that kids were not welcome even though the first bar maid had started getting our drinks ready so we can only assume that the kids rule was a facade as they didn't want to serve non locals !! The rudeness of the staff was the worst we have experienced. We don't mind if kids are not allowed but the staff approached the situation in the most horrific and ignorant way! Avoid this bar as there are so many more fantastic establishments close by! Best of luck to the bar staff when they have their own "kid" !!

Such rude staff. So unwelcoming. Much nicer pubs along Broughton Street so don't waste your time or money in here! 1 star is doing it justice.

Great range of real ales and an old-fashioned pub full of regulars. Pubs like this seem to be a dying breed.

A superb environment for a drink. Been frequenting this establishment for many years, always a good crowd here, a proper pub. Highly recommended.

My family have been regulars for years and we attended to watch the rugby for my sister's hen/birthday. Staff a great laugh as always and great place to watch sport as multiple TVs. Seating outside is good on a warm day as it gets the sun into the evening. Make a cracking Bloody Mary. Great selections of pints and spirits comes in 35ml measures. An easy going place suitable for locals and tourists who want to experience a more traditional pub setting.

Es un pub que estaba al lado de nuestro Airbnb y nos llamó la atención desde el primer día. Fuimos un día a tomar unas pintas y el ambiente nos gustó mucho, tanto de las personas que estaban como clientes, como de los camareros. Los fines de semana hay gente viendo el futbol, gente que queda a tomar la primera con los amigos antes de ir a cenar, y gente que simplemente quiere tomar una pinta tranquilamente en solitario o acompañado. Es un bar grande con una buena distribución, que aprovecha todos los rincones para que podamos estar con la pinta apoñada. El bar en general estaba muy limpio, y a 15 minutos de la Royal Mile.

If you want to be somewhere you feel safe in these COVID times this is not the place for you. The manager seemed to think it was ok to walk about the Pub with his mask under his chin and nobody would bother - I was bothered and ignored by him when pointed out. Won't be returning anytime soon.

Called in whilst exploring near our hotel and recognised from seeing recommended for real ale. Wide choice of guest ales as well.as regulars. Barman very helpful pointing us in the right direction to match our tastes, offering samples too. Good spot for live football, 2 Champions League games shown as well as the evenings Championship match too. Nice mix of regulars and students. Will visit again when next in the city. Toilets modern and clean, seating available outside. Only a short distance from the new St James quarter and the Omni Centre.

Visited on a weekday night friendly staff made to feel valued unlike the place just up the road. Great variety of beers. Nice vibe. Good value for the locality

Nice Real Ale selection, friendly staff, slightly less expensive than other pubs. A regular selection of guest ales. Would definatly come again next time.

Great bar which has been very careful with its COVID restrictions. Prices are very reasonable for Edinburgh city centre. Staff are all great and very friendly and attentive. Highly recommended.

Two visits since the ‘ The Cask’ reopened on May 17th. Staff friendly and helpful and up to speed on Covid Protocols. Gail back in her domain at lunchtimes doing her always excellent home cooked menu with good craic too! Good to be back.

Really enjoyed a beer at this pub. Good pint sitting outside in the September sun. Staff are excellent and really have organised well for Covid.

Second time we have gone there since restrictions in lockdown have relaxed. The staff are amazing and hygiene levels are peak 100%. Every table and chair is wiped down before the next customer is shown to their seat. Table service only and staff keep a great eye on when next beer is due. Plenty of screens available to watch all sport.

Camarera desde adentro a través de una ventana abierta "no puedes estar parado ahí"¡Absolutamente no hay necesidad de que 4 de nosotros en la compañía nos quedamos sorprendidos por decir lo menos!El gerente salió y se puso del lado de su personal. Todo lo que se requería era: lo siento, no puede pararse afuera, ¿puede tomar asiento? Echó a perder lo que habían sido un par de horas maravillosas.Tengo que añadir que todos los demás empleados del bar eran encantadores. Los chicos del bar son super amables.

My second pint in a pub after the lockdown. Good hygiene before and after the customers relax for a pint, nice location and very friendly and approachable staff. I strongly recommend to visit this place.

I popped in to try some local ales and watch the football. They had the Rugby and the Footy on so that was cool....get there early for a seat though.

You will not fiind a pint of beer in central edinburgh which is in such good condition and at a reasonable price. This is not a restaurant, it is a well run Scottish pub that does cheap and chearful food at lunchtimes.

Le pregunté a uno de los miembros del personal si podía cerrar la puerta porque tengo frío al usar una bufanda y ella se fue asando detrás de la barra. Sin disculpas, sin compromiso y simplemente grosero. Servicio pobre y egoísta detrás de la barra. Entiendo que podrías estar caliente detrás de la barra, pero la forma en que ella trató conmigo fue pobre y grosera. ¡Una chica morena con una cola de caballo necesita una lección de servicio al cliente! Visitar Edimburgo después de vivir aquí hace 6 años (mi pub favorito) y no habría recibido este comportamiento en ese entonces. Pobre espectáculo.

This was our first wetting of the whistle and great introduction to Edinburgh. Friendly bar staff, nice selection of beers. Also our first taste of traditionally pulled ales.

An excellent bar with excellent friendly staff. Never wait long for service even if the bar is packed. Offer of sports TV but not in your face if you choose not to watch. Would like an offer of a traditional snack. Keep recommending to friends.

He visitado este bar en varias ocasiones y siempre alcanza un estándar muy alto en cada visita. Muy tradicional por dentro, inmaculadamente conservado por dentro. El personal es muy amable y la gran selección de cervezas que conservan son de alta calidad. Si desea visitar un pub tradicional escocés, esto marcará todas las casillas

Puedes vivir en un área durante bastante tiempo y nunca entrar en un pub en particular. Sin embargo, esta noche rompimos nuestro pato en lo que respecta a Cask & Barrel. Nos gustó porque a) no tenía que ser muszak) tenía una variedad de cervezas interesantes, y bastante más baratas que el lugar más cercano a la cerveza auténtica más cercana c) una decoración y un ambiente agradable y tradicional. Bien podríamos estar volviendo.

Had already eaten so dropped in here for a quick drink in the run up to Christmas. Bar very busy but managed to get a seat. Staff very friendly. Good choice of beers and would recommend.

This place is open till 01.15 on Sat. Plenty of beer to choose from plenty of seats and a nice atmosphere. Bar staff friendly. Never eaten in here but always visit on my trip to Edinburgh.

We were staying locally and discovered this gem. It was cosy and warm. Great mix of old and young. Fine pints of Tennants though they do their own craft beer. I had a lovely hot toddy as I was suffering with a cold.

Had mince and potatoes in the cask and barrel today. Great, tasty food and lots of it for £4.00. Well done to the chef Gayle. Lovely welcoming lady and great in the kitchen.

We came here within our first hour of being in Edinburgh and was greeated by a lovely barman who ended up writing us a list of ideal places to visit as it was our first visit to Edinburgh. Could not be thankful enough for the help and we have never felt more welcome. Would recommend to anybody visiting Edinburgh! (It isn't to expensive too!)

Everyday there is a “special” dish and there are always soup, beef chilly, stovies, baked tatties and pies. The food is homemade, very tasty, substantial portions and very very reasonably priced.

Barman was really weird and unfriendly. Never felt so unwelcome to be in a pub. Think if you want a friendly local pub, this is not the one.

Nice bar, staff very helpful. friendly knowledgeable bar staff. Just nice place for a drink on way home after dinner. Great customer service.

Great pub but spoiled by the weird manager called Graham who took exception to us politely asking for 3 pints of beer however without adding the word 'please'. Very confrontational and unpleasant individual - beware of him spoiling your visit to this otherwise great pub.

The Cask and Barrel never disappoints, good Real Ale at prices that are a lot cheaper than most other city centre pub.

We were waiting for our wives to finish yarn shopping across the road when we hit this place. Very old school pub with local gents coming in for lunch to their “reserved table”. Old style pull draft and great selection of local area ales and beers. The food was very good and we all agreed we would short list this place the next visit to Edinburgh.

Myself and my team spent last Friday at the Cask & Barrel. It was busy but we managed to get seats and were served almost immediately. One of the team knocked over a glass and the guys from the bar were over and sorting it out in no time. Really friendly and concerned about people being injured. Well done all. We will be back :-)

Nice big U shaped bar in the middle of the room, with a good handful of regular drinks that were all interesting, and four or five rotating guests. TV screens if you want such things, and limited seating outside.

Really horrible staff in this place, a small group of us (middle aged couples) were out for a quiet drink and were literally verbally abused by one of the bar staff. Bizarre behaviour - the aggression came out of nowhere, it was really upsetting!! Watch out, they could pounce on you anytime it would seem!!

My google map was not functioning properly, and we got on the wrong street. It was a fortunate error, because we ended up here for lunch.

Great little pub in a very central location. Not many of them left, especially ones that aren't tourist traps and cost over the odds. This pub is great. Always a good selection of beers and a good variety of sport on the television. Outside also catches a nice dose of the sun, especially in the evening

Never had anything but a great pint in here. The place is always spotless which is a rare thing for a traditional pub. Not a food venue as think they only really do pies and snacks, however never tried them so they may be great!

I went there with my friend and have visited before, but it was my mates first visit and I just had to take him to show him how good it is! Superb choice of real ales and lagers and all well kept. Even down to the staff who are nice and friendly and very knowledgeable about the beers that they sell. Lovely traditional seating, immaculately clean inside and they also have several tv screens showing live sport, however its tastefully done with the sound not overly loud. If you're a visitor to Edinburgh, a must place to visit if you're looking for a traditional pub in town

First visit to this pub but we wasn't disappointed. Had a great Duddel Chocolate beer and it was gorgeous. Can't wait for our next visit.

We were served by a young and enthusiastic barman who was a bit of a showman. There was a choice of around a dozen cask beers and the one we chose from the Swannay brewery on Orkney was great. There are a number of screens around showing a variety of sports with no sound and the customers were a mix of young and old. Well worth a visit if you like your beer.

We were staying at the Holiday Inn nearby and were looking for a pub that may be showing the UEFA soccer games. We fortunately found the Cask & Barrel just a couple of blocks away and heard that the owners of this pub were soccer fans so that's where we went a couple of times to enjoy watching the games and a few pints with the friendly locals.

This is not a tourist pub. This is a local, unpretentious pub that caters to young and old alike. I found the bar staff to be very nice. I asked about a specific ale and one of the staff actually took the time to research it for me in a book! I ended up having a Deuchars IPA which was very good. The pub atmosphere is great - lots of dark wood, plenty of places to sit and an attractive bar.

Must have been pension day when we visited! Nothing against senior citizens per set but this was like God's waiting room! Clearly a local pub for local people, not the most welcoming reception and we decided not to hang around. One to skip, there are many better places in Broughton Street to go to!

We visited two nights in a row during a short stay in Edinburgh. We watched a variety of sporting events and enjoyed a chat with a local. The aggressive staff member referenced in other reviews was not in evidence. Ales were decent, prices OK. The place had a relaxed atmosphere which was enjoyable.

We have been to this pub on a number of occasions,the staff have always been helpful and polite, the selection of real ales is always fantastic and they are always well kept, we had a lovely afternoon sitting outside in the sunshine,people watching while enjoying a few drinks, fabulous pub, we will be back on our next visit to Edinburgh,Thank you.

Went in for a few drinks but after our first round, following huffy service from a young barman, who we asked to top up a pint left well down from the top of the glass, we were refused a second round. Absolutely astonished, terrible bar and staff, which we (6 of us all around 50 years of age) will never visit again and will pass on our very poor experience to as many people as we are able. Clearly being run by a very young team, who were lacking in manners and etiquette.

The Cask and Barrell may look like a traditional local bar from the outside but on entering the establishment you a greeted with the site of an excellent horseshoe bar displaying a collection of whiskeys, lager, ales and lagers. 5 guest ales on cask regularly allows the offering to change regularly.

Popped in a couple of times during a long weekend trip to Edinburgh, always served a nice pint of lager and looked like a good selection of beers and spirits were on offer. Special mention to Nick who was serving late Sunday evening doing a sterling job. The regulars we spoke to were also friendly.

In fact, far better than traditional: traditionally pubs like this would be thick with tobacco smoke and have nicotine-stained walls and ceiling!

My friends and I came here to have a few drinks after work and have to say the staff were very friendly and helpful, telling us what choice of drinks there were! We have been many times since.

Tja, denna pub är fantastisk! Många öl och hjälpsamma bartendere. Vi kom hit för att njuta av lite lokal fotboll och vi blev inte besvikna.

I visited the cask and barrel one evening to be met by friendly bar staff, who were attentive and eager to ensure I was seven promptly They presented as knowing their products and enjoying their work. The only one comment I would have is the female toilet could do with a makeover. But all in all this pub is very worth a visit.

Food here is pretty basic, but you're really not here for that. This is a working mans beer pub and it's something of an Edinburgh institution. Great place to watch live sport if there are a few of you and service is efficient and friendly.

Spent the best part of last Saturday evening with a crowd of friends in the Cask & Barrel, enjoying a few drinks and celebrating one member of the groups 30th Birthday.

When Edinburgh Beer Awards. Are Given Out. The Cask Comes Second. Though the Usual Winner is Excellent. Really Impressed with the Cask. Staff very attentive. Range of Beers Good. Served in Top Condition. Fine Bar Layout. Drank Really Good Orkney Best. If i give out Awards. The Cask would be Top of the Pile.

Personally I have never eaten in this establishment. Out and about this is always a stop on the way back to our friends home. Beers and wines are very good, particularly in Summer on a nice day. A nice sunny corner. Only having had drinks here I honestly couldn't say whether food is available . To much concentration on my wine!!!

First time at the Cask and Barrel and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Met friends here to watch the hearts v Hibs match. Had a fab atmosphere and the staff were very friendly.

Another place Ive been going with my mat to for years, quite like the atmosphere here, its a bit sporty, what with the 3 tv's showing football and the like but it does have a good selection of ales.

This used to be one of my favourite bars in Edinburgh, not now. I visited here last week with my friends and was disappointed on several levels, but mainly with the attitude of the staff. They spent the majority of their evening standing talking to each other behind the bar, not clearing tables etc. At the end of the night, one member of staff literally grabbed my glass out of my hand and was verbally aggressive to me and my friends. The overall atmosphere inside the bar was absent, too bright and cold. All you could hear were the extractor fans whirring away. Toilets were dirty and have vandalised posters on the wall.

The atmosphere in this pub is hostile, created entirely by an aggressive barman. It's a shame the other staff collude with this behaviour as it makes for a dreadful customer experience. This pub may be ok if you are a local but I would suggest visitors go to one of the many friendlier bars in the area. We enquired as to this persons behaviour the following day and was advised by the manager, "Yes, he does have anger issues".

My friends and I visited the Broughton Street Cask & Barrel last night. We have chosen this pub for a get-together over a number of years. We tend to be real ale drinkers and have always enjoyed beer well presented, there, served by knowledgeable staff. There has been a change...

As an infrequent visitor to Edinburgh, I was looking forward to catching up with some old friends and taking in an early afternoon football match. We chose to meet in the cask and barrel as it advertised itself as showing sports events and the location was convenient. We were met with what I can only describe as a "growling" member of staff who refused to put the game on the big screen - the pub was fairly empty apart from our group. He then proceeded to abuse one of my friends and ultimately lifted our drinks and told us to leave. I'm pretty disgusted with how we were treated and I'm pretty sure that it stems from the team we follow. As a group, we are professional people, and behave and are courteous wherever we are. I'm expect the same to be extended rather than have some caveman bartender fling abuse at us.
