The Caley Bar in Highland

Ci siamo capitati per caso, abbiamo chiesto se avevano posto e dopo poco ci siamo seduti. Il sevizio anche se mangi non prevede la tovaglietta. Servizio veloce e il cibo è nella media. Peccato che le birre ci sono arrivate in lattina..

Needed somewhere to rest and have a meal. Booked a table in the afternoon for 7.15pm but arrived an hour and a half earlier. Asked the manager if we could earlier. Very obliging hecsaidche would see what he could do. We sat in bar with a drink and very shortly after he came to take us to our table. The decor of the whole building is very clean and modern, the toilets are immaculate. We ordered our food and both courses were delicious. The Fish and chips were to die for and cheaper than other establishments in Ullapool! Service excellent and delicious food Recommend

¡Fue un salvavidas encontrar un lugar para desayunar en Portree! ! ¡Todos los hoteles solo atienden a sus propios huéspedes antes de las 10 am! ¡Encontramos algunas personas haciendo cola afuera del Caley Bar, así que nos unimos a las 8:47 am! ! ! ¡Me alegro de haberlo hecho porque el café se inundó de clientes en 5 minutos después de que nos sentamos! ! ! El desayuno preparado para 11 es bastante caro, pero el morcilla de Stronoway estaba delicioso. Mi rollo de huevo no presentaba demasiado atractivo. Supongo que era estilo de montaña. Haggis y tocino roll también era bueno.

Un des rares restaurants sur Portree qui acceptent que l'on attende au comptoir si le restaurant est plein et qu'on n'a pas réservé (oui c'est pas simple de se faire comprendre au téléphone). Carte classique. On a opté pour le filet de poulet, sauce aux champignons et chips de jambon cru. Et bien c'était très bon ! Seul petit bémol qui n'engage que moi, les desserts ne sont que des coupes glacées. Sinon service et accueil bons.

It’s a pain to get dinner in Portree in season. Next door to the bar is the Caley Cafe, no reservation needed, great and fast service, decent food all at a good price. What more do you want?

The cafe was packed when we stopped for a cup of coffee in the afternoon. However, the service was good as was the cake and coffee. Certainly we were fortunate to get a seat at such a busy time.

the young girls in the room are friendly but the service and especially the food are not adequate not only to the price but just to a minimum standard the burgers paid almost 15 pounds each had the quality and poor accuracy of mc donald the beer brought in the hot glass by dishwasher the salad where the mayonnaise was more than vegetables ..... in the end maybe it was the worst meal of a week in Scotland

Awww mate I would highly recommend the wraps purely so you can try their corn chips!!! They were absolutely packed in there but the service was still fairly prompt in all respects, and the food was quality! My friends loved their choices as well :)

Posticino semplice centralissimo nella tranquilla Portree. Abbiamo atteso un po' ma alla fine siamo riusciti a sederci. Buono il cibo, abbiamo preso un hamburger di Angus Aberdeen io, e un filetto sempre di Aberdeen alla griglia mia moglie. Direi niente male. Birre artigianali dell'isola di Skye e non, solo in bottiglia. Servizio abbastanza veloce e personale gentile. Mi sbilancio sul conto finale, secondo me un po' altino è più alto nella media rispetto agli altri posti dove abbiamo cenato.

I went with a friend and it was very late in the evening and we managed to get a table for something to eat. The food itself was absolutely beautiful and resonably priced compared to some of the neighbouring restaurants. The staff were welcoming and friendly and the service was great. One thing we wished was that we saved room for was dessert as the selection of cakes and treats on display looked amazing.

Posto molto semplice, ma personale gentile, disponibile, è carino perchè non prende prenotazioni e quindi sopratutto in alta stagione non devi peregrinare ed attendere ore per un tavolo. se c'è posto, mangi! consiglio per il cibo e birra locali

La comida nada destacable, parecia recalentada, quizas el dia no fue el mejor,demasiada gente y se acabaron algunos platos de la carta, precio eso si razonable servicio super amable y eficiente

Popped in to get some ice cream while wandering around Portree. Not a whole lot to choose from but good stuff. Service was quick too.

My friend and I stopped off here for breakfast / lunch before heading home. I had link sausage, bacon, tattie scone roll and my friend had a link and bacon roll. Everything was perfect. The young Irish waiter was absolutely lovely as well cracking plenty of jokes and having a good laugh with us. Sorted some ice cream on the way out. 5* waiter deserves a raise!

Ate there on two successive nights, found the food to be good, pleasantly served by a young waitress staff, and the prices about the same as last year.

Nice, relaxed place, Food (fish and chips) was good but nothing special, service was prompt, maybe asked one or two too many times if everything was ok. Wouldn't rush back but wouldn't avoid either.

Estábamos en Portree y decidimos parar para un almuerzo rápido. Caminamos hacia este café. Pequeños y acogedores, buenos empleados, y una buena variedad en el menú. La comida era excelente, especialmente el pescado y patatas fritas. Mis compañeros tenían el Scampi y una envoltura. Les gustaban los suyos también. En nuestras 2 semanas en Gran Bretaña, este fue el mejor pescado de todos los tiempos. Si quieres un buen pescado y patatas fritas, definitivamente ve allí!

My friend and I went there to have dinner as I'd been before in 2010. It's the best fish and chips I've ever had in Scotland. We had to wait about 20 minutes as it was full tourist season in Portree in August. Great service, great fish and chips and good beer to go down with it! Would love to have some right now!! Lol!!

Strange decor, dull and gloomy.

Excellent place to eat, the taste of food was delicious. everything felt fresh. Angus Burger had a great taste.

It was very crowded so we had about a 15 minute wait. We had nachos to start. They were good, nothing fancy. We each had a burger and chips. Both were cooked perfect. My wife had a fiery fairy burger with chili sauce and jalapeños. It was not that spicy but very good. I had The Grand, a double burger dressed. It was very good as well. Peach ice cream afterwards was excellent. Good casual place. Service was great. Very nice young ladies working there.

Bien situé à côté de la place centrale, juste au dessus du port, on y trouve une carte classique de pub mais avec des prix plus proches d'un restaurant. Ce n'est pas mauvais mais du coup les prix sont un peu élevés pour ce qu'on y mange. Service un peu froid, le cadre est agréable, on est installé confortablement.

Called in for a takeaway coffee - the service was great and the coffee even better. I would recommend it!

Comí aquí las dos noches que estuve en Portree. La comida es buena comida, a un precio razonable. El servicio es eficiente, pero no te apresuran. Es un lugar muy agradable. Buen pescado y patatas fritas.

My friend and I were looking for just a pub not one where people were sitting eating Was just past Cafe and were about to walk on when I noticed a blackboard just inside the door saying Pub upstair open Walked up and hey presto there it was great friendly staff and reasonable prized drinks Would highly recommend

Hamburguesas para morirse, especialmente el uso de uno con la salsa. Gran servicio, buen cabinas cómodas, pasamos una noche fabulosa.

Nos detuvimos en para el almuerzo durante una excursión de un día a la isla, y mientras algunos de los elementos de menú aquí son un poco caras sus comidas especiales eran razonables. También ofrecen helados, una gran variedad de bebidas, y varias opciones de dulces. Mi jamón y queso con sopa de zanahoria al curry sandwichera era unos cinco libras y muy sabroso. Un buen lugar si estás buscando un servicio rápido y sencillo menú de artículos.

We stay in Camustianavaig and this is the place to come for a good buyer. Might be a bit overpriced especially during tourist seaon, but still good.

Spent some time here - loads of local characters and the whisky was good!Evenings were fun and folk were very friendly.

Had a fast dinner here, the menu is pretty standard for the area, fish and chips, lamb stew, etc.Accidentally ordered the wrong thing( my fault) server was very gracious, without my even asking, he said he saw my face and knew something was wrong.He quickly changed the meal to something else. I would not hesitate to say go there.

Excellent food lovely staff very happy to recommend have visited Skye for over 45 years and the Cally is well recommended by local people will return again and again

Ook recensie geschreven bij the café (caledonian) is nl hetzelde. Het was slecht: koude doperwten en koud deeg op pie wat ook niet knapperig meer was. Er staan veel mensen in de rij voor een tafel omdat ze niet aan reserveringen doen. Wij waren vroeg en hadden meteen een tafel maar het eten was niet goed.

It was a mistake, no place, no good food, no kind people. A trivial cofee bar with nothing special. Just in case you have very tired kids asking for a pause

As with rest of Portree, the cafe rather disappointing.. Tea and slither of cake x3 nearly £17.. Service terrible as staff too busy giggling to bother with customers.. Thank goodness for Skye they have such amazing scenery as the attitude of places like "The Caley Bar" made us pleased not to be staying locally..

Ce petit restaurant au coeur de Portree n'a rien d'exceptionnel mais on y mange correctement. Les prix sont un peu élevé mais pas plus qu'ailleurs dans la ville. Idéal pour manger un petit truc après une journée de balade sur l'île.

We asked a local were we could get a good fish supper and they recommended "The Cally"!! So glad they did!! Good service from local lassies, huge portion of fish and chips, tasty crispy batter!! Managed to squeeze in one of their home made ice creams, Nutella for me, pear for the hubby!! Again good sized ice creams, both delicious!! Be warned, the place is often busy and your fish supper is cooked to order.....be patient it's well worth the wait!!

We enjoyed our tea and scones here - good quality and nicely served with pleasant staff, However, the premises are on the gloomy side with rather cramped tables so we were not tempted to linger. Could do with a makeover!

Had a lovely lunch here on a passing visit to Portree, The soup and burgers were really nice and all served by really friendly staff. It was full when we arrived so we waited a few minutes for a table, once seated it never felt busy which it testament to the organisation and staff. Would definitely recommend

Most places shut in Portree so went here. No fuss & nonsense service but great food. Highly recommend the grommet burger!

Very busy when we were there, so we had to wait for a table, but the staff was friendly, and the food came quickly. Large selection on the menu, and all dinners were enjoyed!

Limited number of restaurant in Portree, we decided to try this little cosy place. Seating area was comfortable. Toilets clean.Food portion was generous. I would suggest three dishes to be shared among 4 people. Fish & Chips, their ice-cream and burger were all very nice.Staff friendly and attentive.Highly recommended.

La comida es muy buena, pero al ser el sitio pequeño hay que esperar bastante para una mesa. Eso sí, el servicio es muy rápido. Yo comí fish and chips y otro día la lasaña vegetariana, y las dos cosas fenomenal. Hay menú para niños

I came to get ice cream which was great and later had to return because everything else was fully booked for dinner. The staff were excellent, very polite, fast and professional despite the fact that they were all very young. The food itself was ok. Nothing exceptional but can't complain either.

The restaurants in Portree closed quite early so should be there before 8:30 pm if you want some food instead of only a drink. We had a seafood cocktail which turned out to be my favourite for that night, other dishes are ok. Friendly staff members and the restaurant atmosphere is small and cozy.

After seeing the reviews on here I took my partner and his parents here for dinner and was a little disappointed. I had a chicken burger with chips which although I enjoyed, it wasn't anything special considering I paid over £10 for it. The drinks were okay, the lager was a bit warm so I was told and I asked for a lime and lemonade and they didn't have lime but didn't offer me the chance to change my drink which was odd but that's not a big deal. I thought the place in general was a tad over priced, with the desserts being nearly £8! However everywhere in Portree seems to be similar price, something I'm not used to back in sunny Suffolk. Not a bad place, smaller than expected but we didn't have a problem getting a table and we were served very quickly.

We went to this pub/restaurant looking for a good burger and we found it! The place is quite nice with its few decades ago style, beers selection is wide and we tried the Isle of Skye beer, good choice!We tried their beef burger and it was delicious! Sweet bread, great beef, good onion rings, sweet caramelized onion, lettuce and cheese. Perfect mix!if you look for a good burger, that's the place for you!

Siamo stati in questo locale quasi per caso, fondamentalmente perchè era l'unico in paese con un tavolo libero (e che accettasse bambini) ed ormai si era fatto tardi. Il locale non è molto bello, un po' antiquato, avrebbe decisamente bisogno di una rinfrescata. Il menu è quello classico da pub/ristorante scozzese, abbiamo preso il fish&chips che non era male anche se certamente nulla di indimenticabile. Buono invece il dessert, una torta al lime. Prezzi nella media.

Stopped in here with boyfriend on a visit to Skye during a weekend away. It didn't look like much from the outside, or the inside to be fair but you shouldn't judge a book by its cover. I decided to order a chicken toasted wrap and it was quite epic, I think my poor boyfriend had food envy but he enjoyed his homemade soup as well...and his toasted tea cake. The service was timely and efficient and exactly suited to this wee place. There was a lot of selection for cakes but unfortunately I was too full from my wrap to indulge- maybe next time.

Staying in Portree, we found this perfect Scottish Bar that we had hoped we would find! Nice local atmosphere and friendly bartender, Dot, made lots of memories and ended our busy days with some games of darts and relaxation before making our way to our B&B!

Because the other restaurants were full I took a bit of a walk and saw this Bar/Pub/Restaurant... Saw mainly locals inside so it's probably a good place to eat.I wasn't disappointed at all! The portions are quite large for an Asian frame like me so it's great value for money!!! The staff are very welcoming and helpful, making you feel at home right then and there...

Great little restaurant, we had a lovely dinner here during our camping trip, relaxed atmosphere with a really nice menu with good selection and very fair prices. Staff were helpful and quite efficient, clearly a busy place and we didn't wait long for anything. Xx

There was plenty of choice on the menu. The meals were reasonably priced, well presented and the staff friendly.

good reasonably priced food in a pub setting. Limited but adequate choice of meat & fish dishes. The Asian style noodles with salmon was a nice touch as was the sundae

I visited this restaurant with my friends. I ordered for roasted chicken take away(which comes with chips) . But when we went home and opened the pack Wallaa!!! The chips are gone ... We went went back and asked them for a refund and they said they were pretty sure that chips were included in it ... Very bad service..the chicken was good...

My partner and my 2 children visited Portree to visit my eldest son and I'm glad we popped into this cafe. Originally we were just going to get ice cream for the kids but decided to sit for lunch once we looked at the menu. Decent coffee, which can be hard to come by. I requested an extra shot in my latte but that's purely my taste. Both coffees were hot and of a good size. Lunch was good. Kids had sausage, beans and chips and a sandwich with crisps. Both really good. My partner had a burger which he enjoyed and although I was initially disappointed with my 'haggis stack' due to having expected a meal size portion of food but getting what seemed like a starter portion, it filled me up and was tasty (not hot enough though). Waitress was young but very pleasant. The only down side for us was the school kids in for lunch which was off putting. No offence to them as they need to eat, just a shame they were taking up tables in such a lovely place. From the outside , you would struggle to believe the food served inside would be of such good quality. Will be visiting again.

Above average Bar food, I arrived at 7;30 and the salmon and sea bass had already sold out, but the alternatives very good.Very nice dived scallops and large plate of Haddock chips and salad.

An enjoyable and good quality lunch available from a varied menu. Friendly and helpful staff with fast service despite it being a very busy Saturday lunchtime. Very reasonable prices. Recommended.

Friendly and fab food at a good price, the staff and management could not be more friendly, the food was the best in this town without being over expensive, one of the best places we found on skye.

This is the most fantastic bar/cafe with amazing ice creams - open on Sunday which is an advantage wonderful lunches fantastic service ate here twice for lunch would highly recommend

Great food in recently refurbished café.Almost missed it as the name and outside appearance belied the interior and the quality catering.

Although we have been to Portree previously we had never given this place a try. What have we missed? Bloody good food - haggis pakoras delicious, breaded Brie with Apple chutney mmmmmmm. Main courses just as tasty and was pleased to see a different variety of food to choose as compared to other places close by who all seem to serve the same. Polite and prompt service with a smile. Reasonably priced. Well worth a visit, we'll definitely be back next time.

Delicious pub food served with a smile then get the Craic at the bar after!! Would recommend the steak and ale pie

Firstly it is not all that easy to find but once you see the stairs up you go and then you are in ! It is actually very spacious inside. The choice of food was good with portions to match and service provide by the waitresses was polite and efficient.Beer was reasonably priced and you got a decent glass of wine for your money.We went twice and were very happy with our experience.

Die Caley-Bar können wir vom Essen her wirklich empfehlen. Als Vorspeise hatten es uns die Tempura-Shrimps sehr angetan. Die Hauptspeisen - wir haben hier 2 mal gegessen - waren alle sehr gut und die Steaks besonders schmackhaft. Was uns leider nicht so gefallen hat, war die Atmosphäre des Lokals. Wie im Hotel - würde etwas Farbe und vielleicht eine Mitteldecke am Tisch, sowie das eine oder andere Dekoelement dem Lokal sehr gut tun. Hervorheben möchte ich allerdings die Freundlichkeit des Personals!!! Die konnte sich wirklich sehen lassen. Das, und das wirklich gute Essen machen vieles wieder wett. Genossen haben wir auch, dass wir zum Essen das Haus nicht verlassen mussten, da es jeden Abend geregnet hat. Wir konnten auch mit den Kindern im Lokal sitzen bleiben, auch nach 21 Uhr!Fazit: Essen sehr gut, Weinkarte OK, Personal sehr freundlich, Preis- Leistungsverhältnis gut.

they are busy redecorating at the moment but don't let this put you off. the food and staff are really good. give it a try

I had a beef burger at the caley bar last night and am sorry to say it was awful... I asked for the beef medium rare and was told it could only be cooked well done... okay... When the meal came, I understood why: it was the worst beef patty you can imagine, very tough to chew on (even though it was ground beef!!!), dry, tasteless. I imagine it was frozen and not fresh, as were the fries and the onion rings. If you want decent food, look somewhere else. Also, the selection of beers on tap was quite limited. Staff was nice and helpful even though the place was busy with people having drinks.

Stayed in Portree recently and ended up eating here three out of our four nights..As other reviewers have mentioned the entrance is not obvious but find the menu on the wall and up the stairs you go.Staff were very friendly and helpful,not only in taking your order but checking everything was ok.I can recommend the steak and ale pie which was truly scrumptious.To sum up a great place to eat.

6 of us dropped in to have dinner, not knowing what to expect because we had just arrived in Portree. Everyone's meal was superb! The person who had the salmon couldn't stop talking (for the next week) about how fantastic it was. It's a "diamond in the rough" because from the outside you might expect average pub food - but this was much, much better. Be sure to stop in!

Prices are reasonable, and staff are always friendly.Restaurant and cafe are generally quite busy, which is always a good sign.

We had one evening meal at The Caley Bar whilst staying on the Isle of Skye. Good quality home made food from Steak & Ale Pies to homemade Lasagne. They seemed to be doing a roaring trade with the battered fish and chips too. It served the type of food needed when it was a dark, wet and windy night.

Good food for a large group - 13, great value! Friendly staff. Enjoyed the veggie options. We were in the dining room upstairs but had a drink in the bar before going up. Same friendly helpful staff! Worth a visit.

My wife and I are over on Skye once or twice a month for a mix of work and leisure and this is our regular eating place. Based on many visits, you will get good, honest, traditional fare at what we consider to be the best value in the area. We have never been disappointed with the food or the casual but attentive service and have certainly never left feeling hungry. There are many places on Skye that do fine dining but sometimes, especially after a busy day, the Caley menu is ideal.Although on Wentworth St, it can easily be missed as the entrance to the upstairs bar is quite narrow.

Having not booked anywhere to eat on Saturday night, and not looking for anything too fancy, the reviews of the Caley Bar made us give it a try although the menu outside looked like pretty standard pub fare and not that big a choice. The service was excellent and very friendly. When waiting for our meal a table by the window became free so we were asked if we'd prefer to sit there, rather than in the corner which was free when we arrived.We just had main courses - scampi & chips and chicken with haggis and a creamy sauce. Both meals were fine but came with frozen veg and were just a very basic pub standard. Nothing wrong with it if that's what you want but I've eaten in other pubs with just that little bit extra something, so I wouldn't rush to return.

It was our first night in Portree and we were looking for somewhere to eat and came across this place which is not obvious as it is on the 1st floor (menu is on the wall outside the entrance though). The staff are very welcoming and happy to amend the menu to suite your requirements. Service is excellent, food piping hot and represents excellent value for money. We had found the best so just kept going back here for the duration of our stay in Skye. They were even happy to serve food a little later if we telephoned beforehand to give them prior warning if we would be eating late (within reason, of course).Can't recommend this place enough. If they were on the ground floor and more obvious to the passing public I feel thay would be much busier (which they deserve to be)

Just had my staff night out at Kirk at the Caley...........Fantastic meal yet again. Couldnt fault it, Great atmosphere. We will be back again :)

On ne pouvait pas trouver un restaurant ouvert pour manger apres 15h et on est tombe par hasard sur le Caley Bar. Nous avons pris une soupe du jour, une salade de crevette, et des beefs burgers. On a ete tres bien servi et c'etait tres bon.

We went ro this restaurant as it had 5 points on the trip advisor scale. We went with 4 adults in August 2011 and had 4 different meals. All with very different results. Serving Maccaroni with French Fries is very unusual for a non scotsman, but taste was good. Salmon with noodles was uneadible, but the reaction of the personnell on our complaint was perfect. They immediately reacted very friendly and did not deduct anything from our bill. Haeggis with chicken tasted very good, Cajun chicken was also a good choice. All together we thought, that the price to value ratio was very good, well sized portions but no gourmet restaurant.

Kirk at the Caley is the restaurant bar within the Urquhart Caledonian Hotel in Portree's Wentworth St. This is my third visit here and I felt it was time to give praise where it's due. Meals are always served swiftly by the friendly, welcoming staff in one of the busier bars in town. Portions are extremely generous for the price, easily the best value available in Portree. I've sampled from a varied menu that has more than satisfied each time, and won't hesitate to return for more in the future. Keep it up!

Just been to "Kirk at the Caley" Had a fantastic meal, couldnt fault it. Had the best Macaroni ever. Yet again, couldnt fit in a pudding, very generous portions. Would recommend this restaurant to everyone, its great value for lovely food and a great selection on the menu, something for everyone. Well worth a visit!!!!!

I had the haggis neeps & tattie for a starter and it was super!!! then i had the venison burger with chips side saled & onion rings all well portion'd and i was well and truly stuffed. it was a crying shame that i couldent have try'd any of the puddings!! i would highley recommend kirk at the caley because of its fast service and great value as well as the great food!!!!

The food service at the Caledonian Hotel has now been taken over by Kirk Moir. We visited last week to try it out and were not disappointed; the menu is large and varied and has to be the best value in Portree. I had the chicken and haggis and my wife had the steak pie both were excellent; good sized portions and served quickly. I would recommend "Kirk at the Caley" to everyone, its well worth the trip up the stairs.
